THOMAS INGENLATH
Polestar is quietly revolutionising the car industry. Originally founded in 1996 as Flash Engineering, Polestar was acquired by Volvo in 2015 and two years later was revealed as a new standalone electric performance brand. In just six years, the Swedish brand’s subtle styling, green technology and exceptional performance has gained cult status, with new models selling out before production even begins.
By 2026, Polestar’s range will include an SUV, crossover, luxury fastback, twoseater roadster, and a hydrofoil in collaboration with Candela, in addition to its multi-award-winning Polestar 2 saloon. If this weren’t enough, the company is currently developing the Polestar 0 – the world’s first car with no associated emissions, slated for launch by 2030.
Polestar is a company on a mission, and at its helm is Thomas Ingenlath. As the former Chief Design Officer at Volvo, Ingenlath has brought a designer’s sensibilities to lead this young brand to become one of the world’s most innovative and exciting automotive companies.
“Naturally, having somebody at the helm where design is in every part of their brain and body means that Polestar radiates a unified approach to the design aspect in each and every element of the brand, even the pieces the customer will never see,” says Ingenlath. His decades spent working as a designer was the very best training for leading such a dynamic company. “As a designer, you are trained to feel comfortable with making brave decisions and bearing that pressure and responsibility, and that is good education for what I have to do now,” he says.
Brave decisions include committing to creating the Polestar 0. “The reduction of CO2 is not just a Polestar task, it is really the task ahead of society for the next decade,” says Ingenlath. The project calls on likeminded companies to join Polestar in their research to develop the world’s first car with no associated emissions. “We should not be scared because we don’t yet know the answer – if you don’t start working on it today you will never know.”
While Polestar 0 is described as the company’s “moonshot” project, the groundbreaking research the company is doing is having a positive effect elsewhere. “An
important side effect is that year after year, the Polestar 2 has reduced its CO2 footprint, down to three tonnes within three years,” says Ingenlath. “As a CEO I have to defend this goal of reaching zero emissions; yes, we still have to grow as a company, but we should not forget about the long term direction.”
Surprisingly, given Polestar’s role as an entirely electric company, Ingenlath does not want Polestar to be defined by what it is best known for: electric vehicles. “Our brand is actually not centred around being electric; it is centred around design, innovation, and sustainability – these are the three core pillars of the brand,” he says.
While Ingenlath acknowledges the vital importance of electrification for the future of the automotive industry, Polestar will be ready for whatever means of propulsion the future holds. “In a hundred years I don’t think people will talk about Polestar being electric anymore. What is lasting is not the technology but what we created as a brand –the brand value is really the essence of the value creation.”
For Ingenlath, Polestar’s innovation is centred around the experience. “Every time you drive a Polestar it feels special and that comes through the senses,” he says. “Our cars are definitely not designed for the average crowd; they are rather something for the connoisseur. They do not shout “look at me!” They are a beautiful piece of design, tuned with great expertise like an instrument giving you the pleasure of knowing what a marvellous product you have. That is the experience we want to create.”
By producing beautiful, desirable, sustainable products for the luxury market, Ingenlath hopes to cause a ripple effect in wider society. “It is super important that we use our talent, our art, our craft to create these amazing products that really become icons and make people become naturally interested in buying, owning and loving sustainable products.”
Of all the cutting-edge technology that Polestar is pioneering, it is something comparatively simple of which Ingenlath is most proud: making the Polestar logo to the same colour as the body of the car. “I’m proud that we resisted the reflex of doing it in chrome just because it had always been done that way,” he says. “By questioning the status quo, sometimes you find that things can be done better.”
As CEO of Polestar, Thomas Ingenlath is leading a technological REVOLUTION . He talks to PURSUIT about why bold innovation is at the heart of creating the car company – and SOCIETY – of the future

SPARKLING IDEAS
From AGEING WINE UNDER THE SEA to creating the world’s LIGHTEST CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE, these producers are driving ambitious innovations to usher in the next generation of winemaking
6-7
TALAMO A MARI BACCI WINES
Marco Bacci was on board his yacht when he was first inspired to try a completely revolutionary way to age his wine. As the owner and CEO of the award-winning Bacci Wine Group, he noticed that the bottles of wine which had slipped to the bottom of the yacht had matured surprisingly well. “The quality was great, much better than at the cellar in the winery,” says Bacci.
He realised that the ingredients required to create optimal wine ageing conditions could all be found in the Tyrrhenian Sea, right beside his Terre di Talamo vineyard in Tuscany. “16°C is the perfect temperature to age red wine, the stable temperature at 35 metres deep,” he says. The depth has the added benefit of applying the ideal amount of pressure and light, while storms do the job of gently rotating the bottles. “All those factors made a beautiful environment in which to mature red wine,” says Bacci.
It took four years battling with bureaucracy to get the relevant permissions from the government. “The main issue was having to explain something that had never been done before,” Bacci says. “I was so convinced about the quality that I never thought to give up.”
In 2022, Bacci Wines released the first 6,000 bottles from the 2018 harvest. Talamo a Mare is a certified organic Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, aged for 12 months under the Tuscan sea.
CHAMPAGNE TELMONT RÉMY COINTREAU
Champagne Telmont was founded on revolution. Established in 1912 near Épernay in northern France by local winegrower Henri Lhôpital in the wake of the Champagne Riots, today the Maison counts Rémy Cointreau as a majority stakeholder and the Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio as an investor.
This is thanks to Champagne Telmont’s uncompromising commitment to sustainability. Not only has the Maison pledged that by 2025, 100% of its vines will be certified organic, it is on a mission to become, by 2030, the first Climate Positive Champagne house, and to be Net Positive by 2050. Achieving these goals requires a reduction of their carbon footprint of at least 90%.
One of their first innovations has been to create the world’s lightest Champagne bottle, in partnership with French glassmaker, Verallia. Realising that the glass used in its bottles accounted for 24% of its total carbon emissions, Champagne Telmont began experimenting with creating lighter (and therefore less emission-heavy) bottles. At just 800 grams, it is 35 grams lighter than today’s standard Champagne bottle, with a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Despite their ultra-lightweight design, the bottles are able to withstand up to twice the pressure found in a car tyre. The first batch of the revolutionary Réserve de la Terre will be available to buy in 2026.
FASHIONING FUTURE
The LEGENDARY house GUCCI has always been a fashion pioneer. As two of its most innovative new launches show, its FUTURE is informed by its PAST
From becoming one of the first luxury fashion houses to accept cryptocurrency, to its pioneering partnership with Roblox, Gucci’s enthusiastic embrace of the metaverse has made this storied brand a Gen Z favourite.
While Gucci takes a visionary approach to 21st century luxury fashion, its success lies in its respect for its heritage, and two of its most innovative recent launches have been deeply rooted in its past. The 2021 launch of Gucci Vault, an online concept store and brainchild of the former Creative Director Alessandro Michele, is a modern celebration of Gucci’s legendary archive.
Featuring one-off pieces created by independent designers using Gucci materials, as well as restored archived pieces, Gucci describes its Vault as “a treasure trove of unique objects”. Vault’s first collective collections – Gucci Continuum – have seen the House collaborate with brands including Vans, Maison Michele, and Husbands.
In 2022, Gucci became the first major fashion brand to build its own space on The Sandbox, the digital platform where players can build, own, and monetise their gaming experiences in the Ethereum blockchain. Gucci Vault Land offered the House the perfect opportunity to educate the Web3 community on its heritage via gaming.
Gucci’s fusion of heritage and innovation continues with Gucci Cosmos, its immersive exhibition celebrating the 102-year-old brand’s most iconic designs. After its debut in Shanghai, the show moves to London from 11 October to 31 December before travelling to Paris and Kyoto.
Curated by the Italian fashion theorist and critic Maria Luisa Frisa, Gucci Cosmos’ state-of-the-art set was designed by the worldrenowned British artist Es Devlin, the creator of acclaimed displays for institutions including Tate Modern and The Royal Opera House, and global recording artists including Beyoncé and Adele.
Devlin fuses pioneering audio, visual and kinetic technology to take the viewer on a journey, experiencing how Gucci’s visionary designs have both reflected and defined the times over the past century. “This exhibition wants to try to show the origin story behind the myth that is Gucci,” she says.
So, what innovation is next? With new Creative Director Sabato de Sarno debuting his first collection for Gucci at Milan Fashion Week in September, a new chapter in the Gucci story is about to begin. And as the House has demonstrated over the past century, anything could happen.

THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE
easy to think purely of EXTRAORDINARY
When we contemplate bold innovation, it
What makes an experience exceptional? At Ocean Independence, we believe it all comes down to fantastic levels of service, developed and refined through years of first-hand experience and knowledge.
“In today’s world where so much is automated, we want to continue focusing on the human element – it’s a sort of reverse innovation,” says Peter Hürzeler, CEO of Ocean Independence.
Whether assisting our Clients with chartering or buying a yacht, or expertly managing their investment for them, Ocean Independence’s core ambition is to provide the very best Client experience when it comes to yachting. This is the driving force behind every decision Ocean Independence makes as a Company.
Our Client-first approach puts experience and knowledge at the fore, and one cannot exist without the other. “Our focus is on empowering our Consultants on both the charter and sales sides to have as much knowledge and technology as possible at their disposal to enable them to give the best advice to our Clients,” says Stuart Isaacs, Marketing Director at Ocean Independence.
On the charter side, this means sending our Consultants on FAM (familiarisation) trips so they can experience the yachts, crews and destinations for themselves. From Belize and the Bahamas to Cuba and Costa Rica, Ocean Independence’s Consultants have visited every charter destination we operate in. One even joined a trip in Antarctica on the iconic 77m expedition yacht Legend
“They can step into our Clients’ shoes and see how it feels to be on board and be objective about the experience,” says Isaacs. “There are very few people in the world other than the Client themselves who will have experienced what it’s like on board one of these yachts, so that knowledge is hugely valuable and is shared among the Team.”
Hürzeler agrees. “You can find a lot of information on a website but the real difference between an internet search and what you get from an Ocean Independence charter Consultant is that our people have first-hand experience in the areas where the charters are taking place, with the yachts the charters are booked on, and with the crews that are manning these yachts,” he says. “This extra personal experience balanced with understanding the needs and expectations of our Clients means they can make informed, very specific recommendations to match the Client to their ideal charter. That’s the added value we deliver.”
As well as FAM trips, Consultants also benefit from visiting charter yacht shows across Europe, America and the Caribbean, enabling them to get to know the yachts available for charter. Having invested in our CRM system and intelligence platforms, the Ocean Independence Consultants are able to easily share their findings and observations with the wider global team, placing information at their
discoveries.
fingertips which in turn can be passed on to their Clients.
This spirit of collaboration is also applied to the sales division of the company, where the information gleaned from their regular visits to yacht shows and shipyards helps the wider company to stay informed. “These in-person visits are essential for our Consultants to learn what is available, the latest designs, the quality of the finishes in real life, as well as developing their networks,” says Hürzeler. “It’s crucial that our Consultants can speak about a product from experience.”
To further develop our Consultants’ knowledge, Ocean Independence has started a series of keynote speaker sessions with industry partners, held online and open for the entire company to attend. So far this year we have had the privilege of hosting five exceptional speakers showcasing a breadth of expertise.
Perry van Oossanen and Niels Moerke from Van Oossanen Navel Architects shared insights on yacht performance and hull innovations. Captain Matt Callaway from MY ANYA discussed the crucial relationship between Captains and Consultants. Nick Westwood, Executive Director and Villa Specialist at Red Savannah highlighted the top luxury travel hotspots for exclusive villa rentals in 2023, and most recently, Federico Rossi, the COO of Rossinavi, provided invaluable insights into innovative yacht concepts, new developments, and trends in buyer behaviour.
At the end of every talk there is a questionand-answer session which is open to all. “Being presented with the opportunity to ask industry leaders direct questions and have a proper conversation is a unique chance,” says Isaacs. “It means our Team can gain a deeper understanding which they wouldn’t necessarily have otherwise, which in turn will benefit our Clients.”
Our Company-wide innovations to develop our collective knowledge has resulted in us creating some spectacular Client experiences throughout the world. From arranging a heli skiing excursion from a yacht in Greenland to supervising the construction of a new build yacht in Taiwan, our Consultants are ideally positioned to cater to every requirement.
So, what does the future hold for Client innovation at Ocean Independence? “Our aspiration is always to make the yachting experience as much fun and as enjoyable as it can be,” says Hürzeler. “I believe we already do that very successfully today, but there is always more to do to polish and develop that experience.”
“We aim to leave the Client with as little to do as possible,” he adds. “They are time poor and by making the experience more technical, via an app for example, it would pass the work and responsibility back to them. Airlines have done this and it’s not really what we want to do; we want our Clients to simply have enjoyment. The human experience is at the heart of everything we do.”

PEAK PIONEERS
The fridge-freezer is the stalwart appliance of every kitchen, silently preserving food and chilling drinks without requiring much thought. Yet the technical innovation contained within them has transformed modern life. And the original pioneer? Sub-Zero & Wolf.
The family-owned American brand was founded in 1945 by Westye Bakke, an engineer from Madison, Wisconsin. He sought to find a means of preserving his son’s insulin to treat his juvenile diabetes, and invented ‘below zero’ refrigeration’ in the process. The first freestanding freezer – and Sub-Zero & Wolf – was born.
From introducing dual refrigeration – the original fridge-freezer –in 1955 to creating the first integrated fridge in partnership with celebrated architect Frank Lloyd-Wright, where Sub-Zero & Wolf has led, its competitors have followed.
The newly redesigned ‘Classic’ range is a case in point. Retaining the iconic stainless steel grille, the three models showcase a raft of innovative technological features. A NASA-inspired air purification system (a scaled-down version of the one on the International Space Station) which scrubs the air of Ethylene gas and odour every 20 minutes, slows food spoilage and reduces waste.
Other industry-leading features include dual refrigeration technology, keeping food fresher for 30% longer than other fridges. Clearsight™ LED lighting reduces shadows even when fully stocked, and a sensor reduces brightness by 90% in dim environments. Nanocoated glass shelves with hydrophobic properties stop spillages from
spreading, while the touch control panel enables full setting customisation – ‘party mode’ increases ice production by 40%.
For yacht Owners, the sleek new Undercounter range offers a suite of refrigerators and wine coolers which can be integrated everywhere from the galley to the deck, thanks to the marine grade stainless steel, UV protection glass and anti-vibration shelves. The new range of 60cm Wolf products – from ovens and microwaves to coffee machines – are also more galley-friendly.
The precision technology of the brand’s new outdoor range of grills, meanwhile, provides nuanced temperature control and 100% even heat distribution for the perfect barbecue, while the cleverly positioned low burner won’t be snuffed out by the windier conditions at sea.
Sub Zero & Wolf’s innovations have also made their appliances the most energy efficient in the industry. Over 30 of its appliances have been awarded the Energy Star rating for outstanding energy efficiency, while the average Sub-Zero and Wolf product uses less electricity than a 75-watt light bulb.
Handmade in the USA from the highest grade materials and rigorously tested, each Sub-Zero & Wolf product has an average lifespan of 22 years and is fully recyclable, while the brand’s worldwide warranty and global presence means a representative can offer support at any port in the world. Kitchen appliances have never been cooler.
SUB-ZERO & WOLF is built on innovation. Creating TRAILBLAZING luxury appliances since 1945, the brand has masterminded the products which are now MODERN LIFE essentials. As their latest launches show, they remain at the cutting-edge

The sailing catamaran will feature Sunreef’s proprietary solar panel system which can be set into any surface on board, from decks and topsides to masts, delivering an enormous 52 kWp of green power. An advanced hydro-generation system will enable emission-free cruising at 11 knots and ‘infinite range’, according to the shipyard. Offering a vast amount of space, the 43M Eco ’s highlights include a large 'ocean lounge' aft which ties the aft deck, swimming platform and fold-down balconies into a single space to relax and enjoy the views. The area can be fully customised with the addition of a massage room, a bar or a fitness area, while tenders and toys can be stored in the yacht's discreet aft garage.
PINK GIN VI
ADVANCED COMPOSITE MATERIALS
The world’s largest carbon fibre sloop, Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI ’s size is no barrier to her performance. Launched in 2017, the project epitomises Baltic Yachts’ ambitious build quality and advanced construction techniques. Sleeping 10, her 18-tonne carbon composite hull and deck were precision built in three parts. Baltic Yachts collaborated with Swiss specialist engineering company Esoro to develop their Force Feedback steering system especially for the project. Mimicking the side forces on the rudder, it gives a true sensation of the yacht’s behaviour – usually lost with hydraulic power. Pink Gin VI ’s predecessor Pink Gin V ’s naval architects judel/vrolijk & co. and interior design studio Design Unlimited reunited for the project. Cleverly engineered topside balconies lead guests directly into the port side lobby – no ladders required – while rare and precious finishes including salmon skin, 8,600-year-old bog wood and oxidised bronze create a unique backdrop for the Owner’s extraordinary art collection.
PROJECT SAPPHIRE HYBRID
PROPULSION
SYSTEMS
Designed by 7seas yacht design, this 43m fast planing hybrid motor yacht’s remarkable hybrid jet propulsion system will offer absolute versatility without compromising on performance or the environment. Planned for delivery in 2025, Project Sapphire will offer a range of over 5,500 nautical miles at 6 knots, a cruising speed of 25 knots and a top speed of 36 knots, with an option to cruise in near-silent full electric mode.
By combining traditional diesel engines with electric motors and advanced battery systems, this avant-garde yacht produces lower emissions, contributing to cleaner air and water at sea and in the harbour. The hybrid propulsion system also offers enhanced fuel efficiency. By intelligently managing power sources, Project Sapphire can operate at different speeds while optimising fuel consumption, reducing operating costs and extending the range of the vessel, allowing for longer journeys and exploration of more diverse destinations.
The electric motors offer precise control, allowing for seamless navigation and manoeuvrability in tight spaces or challenging conditions. This flexibility enables Project Sapphire to access unique destinations and provide up to 10 guests with unforgettable experiences.
MILELE SUBMERSIBLES & PERSONAL
SOEL SENSES 62
WATERCRAFT
Launched last year from Royal Hakvoort’s shipyard in the Netherlands, the 42.5m Milele boasts a cutting-edge toy box. While the lower deck houses a gym, the bow is home to a state-of-the-art U-Boat Worx NEMO submersible, enabling Milele’s eight guests to explore the waters beyond the yacht in absolute comfort and safety.
Held in a specially designed storage garage, the submersible is engineered to offer the clearest possible view, with the fully acrylic pressure hull positioned at the front with no obstructions from ballast tanks, batteries or other components. Air conditioning, optimal leg and headroom and surround sound music ensure that Milele’s comforts are seamlessly replicated on board.
The intuitive interface on board the submersible is easy for pilots to learn during their pilot’s training course. The unique control device – the MANTA Controller – can simply be handed over by the pilot to their guests for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to personally steer a submarine.
Milele’s exterior and interior design was carried out by Omega Architects, with naval architecture from Van Oossanen. Innovative design details requested by the Owner include scooped bulwarks to provide clear views to the sides from all decks. Van Oossanen’s patented Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) is combined with the Hull Vane®, an innovative patented ‘underwater-spoiler’ placed below in the stern, reducing, fuel consumption and ship motion by up to 25%.
Powered by two 2580 kW MTU (type12V 4000 M93L) diesel engines and two electric booster engines, Milele can reach speeds of up to 26.5 knots. At a steady cruising speed of 12 knots, she has transatlantic capability with a range of 3,800 nautical miles.
SUSTAINABLE POWER SYSTEMS
Dutch brand Soel Yachts' 18.8 metre solar-powered electric yacht is set to redefine responsible luxury yachting, offering freedom and comfort with the lowest environmental impact.
With a design brief which demanded stellar performance and supreme comfort with zero emissions, Soel set about creating a highly innovative solar-powered catamaran with a sustainable and responsible approach to power generation and consumption.
42 state-of-the-art solar panels integrated on Soel Sense 62’s solar roof will generate 18.5 kWp, equivalent to up to 50 kWh, enabling her Owner to cruise off the grid at a speed of up to 14 knots. Soel Yachts’ unique active cooling system for solar panels will increase the energy harvest by up to 20%, an industry-leading innovation.
With a CFD-optimised hull shape specifically designed for efficient electric propulsion, every element of Soel Senses 62 is aligned for exceptional performance. Throughout Soel’s engineering process, special attention was paid to the integration of the electric system to ensure the yacht’s speed, range, and manoeuvrability could operate at their peak. The two propulsion systems – Cruise and Power – both provide efficient long-range cruising without high fuel bills. The absence of noisy generators and the reliance on clean energy sources significantly reduces noise and vibration, creating a serene ambiance on board for a more peaceful cruising experience.
Soel Senses 62 sleeps up to ten guests across a capacious Owner’s cabin, two VIP guest cabins, and a children’s cabin with three beds. The yacht is supported by three crew who have their own separate access, respecting the Owner’s privacy.
SCENIC ECLIPSE
DYNAMIC POSITIONING SYSTEMS
The six-star luxury mega-yacht Scenic Eclipse sets a new standard for the future of luxury travel at sea, thanks to her dynamic positioning system. Developed and owned by Australian river cruise operator, Scenic, and launched in 2019, the yacht is the first cruise ship for the brand and showcases their commitment to innovation and passenger comfort.
Designed by Foreship and built by the Uljanik Group in Croatia, Scenic Eclipse has an Ice Class 1A Super rating, enabling her to cruise through Arctic and Antarctic waters in the summer months. Her Polar Class 6 rating – the highest ice-class rating available to a passenger ship – also means she can navigate challenging seas safely.
As a yacht designed and built for the most extreme environments, it was vital that the comfort of Scenic Eclipse ’s 228 guests on board (restricted to 200 in Polar regions) was not compromised, which is where the dynamic positioning system comes in.
By utilising a combination of GPS, thrusters, and sophisticated algorithms, Scenic Eclipse can maintain a precise position without the need for traditional anchors, even in adverse weather conditions. The system minimises the effects of waves and therefore the risk of seasickness for passengers, while reducing noise and vibration for a tranquil and comfortable journey.
The dynamic positioning system allows Scenic Eclipse to access remote and sensitive areas that are otherwise off-limits. With no anchors which could damage delicate marine ecosystems, the yacht can explore pristine locations without leaving a negative impact.
The system also enhances safety and manoeuvrability, minimising the risk of collisions and ensuring safe navigation, providing peace of mind for both passengers and crew.
NORTHERN SUN
LONG RANGE CRUISING
Adventure is in Northern Sun ’s DNA. Delivered in 1976 under the name Hokko Maru (“Northern Light”) at 50.8m she was the largest yacht built by the Narasaki Shipbuilding yard at the time, and originally worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing the marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. Northern Sun ’s new Owners instigated an extensive rebuild between 2006 and 2008, carried out by HYS Yachts in the Philippines, which transformed her into a luxury cruising yacht and saw her cruising range increase to a staggering 10,000nm from her 170,000 litre fuel tanks. The owners then spent ten years cruising through Southeast Asia, using Northern Sun as their base for scuba-diving in the Andaman Sea, kayaking in the mangrove swamps of Phang Nga Bay and exploring remote Indonesian fishing islands. A further refit in 2019 retained her nostalgic and handsome profile and embraced her past with characterful teak interiors, while ensuring she offers every modern comfort. Permanently based in Phuket in Thailand and available for charter, Northern Sun ’s long-range cruising capability makes her perfectly suited to explore the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. She sleeps up to 12 guests across a full beam Master stateroom and five further staterooms, along with 12 crew.
COMO
ADVANCED GLASS TECHNOLOGY
When Feadship was approached to build Como, their client requested unprecedentedly large windows in the hull as well as an expanse of glass within her superstructure. They met the request with gusto, building on their years of experience researching and developing glass structures which could also support structural loads from the upper decks.
Glass covers the structure on Como in a continuous glass band, creating a sinuous look and bathing the interior in natural light. Glazed side panels in the superstructure are placed on top of the metal rather than being set into it, creating a continuous surface and offering uninterrupted views from the Owner’s stateroom.
The vast windows in Como ’s hull far exceed what was once permissible from a regulation point of view and were rigorously tested to prove their safety to Lloyds. Launched in 2015, the 46.22 metre yacht’s pioneering use of glass set new standards for the industry.
EXCELERATE Z
SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS
The only known Sunseeker with an interior specially designed and supervised by Jon Bannenberg, Excelerate Z is a fully stabilised fast planing yacht which has been transformed into a cuttingedge communication hub. As a leading provider of fast-response data, video and voice services utilising their own satellite and 4G networks for global Emergency Services and UK Government, Excelerate was well-placed to launch their maritime division. David Savage, the company’s founder and CEO, chose to use his company’s yacht to showcase Excelerate’s capabilities, and make her ‘the yacht of the possible.’
In 2017, the 28.1m yacht, first launched in 2006, received not only a full mechanical overhaul and interior upgrade, but was kitted out to become one of the most impressively connected and technologically advanced yachts on the charter market for her size. Excelerate Z proves Savage’s point that VSAT and Wi-Fi connectivity on board superyachts can be as standard and costeffective as providing electricity.
Utilising a hybrid network of satellite and cellular connectivity to create a resilient onboard internet connection, Excelerate Z ’s connectivity is second to none. The company installed KU and KA band satellite antennas to generate broadband connectivity capable of speeds of 30Mb down X 6Mb up, complemented by dual 4G capability, ensuring constant connectivity, even in the most remote locations.
ECO REVOLUTION
It’s an uncomfortable TRUTH that superyachts generate tonnes of emissions. To counter this, the progressive Polish shipyard SUNREEF is launching the world’s most ECO-FRIENDLY superyacht, revolutionising the yachting industry and heralding a GREENER FUTURE
If you want to move forward and change the world around you, you have to be able to reinvent yourself.” So says Nicholas Lapp, Vice President of Sunreef, the shipyard built on challenging the status quo.
Having revolutionised multihull design for the past 20 years with its luxury customised catamarans, Sunreef is now at the vanguard of eco-yachting innovation. Spanning sailing and power yachts, the Sunreef Yachts Eco range deploys cutting-edge technology to offer a fully customisable, responsible yachting experience which doesn’t compromise on luxury.
Developing the Eco range gave Sunreef the opportunity to go back to the drawing board and reassess every aspect of their yachts. “Green yachting is about so much more than clean propulsion,” says Lapp. “It’s about air conditioning, water and waste management, the woods and fabrics you use for the interiors. It is a very broad subject and we love to explore it.”
As a result of this 360° vision, the Eco yachts harness multiple sources of renewable energy giving the Owner total autonomy and peace of mind. The range showcases the world’s first and only composite-integrated solar panel system, which can be mounted anywhere on its surfaces. A hydro generation system creates power while the yacht is sailing, while wind turbines deliver 24-hour power generation whether at sail or in dock.
The fully optimised hull, carbon masts, booms and structural reinforcements, and ultra-light lithium batteries make the yacht’s
weight as efficient as possible. Energy consumption on board is significantly reduced with sustainable insulation materials and ultra-efficient air-conditioning, while advanced water maker and purification systems keep the requirement for bottled water to an absolute minimum. The Eco yachts are finished with sustainable materials such as linen and basalt, with reclaimed hardwood floors and recyclable sails.
Sunreef’s Eco range of catamarans is now its most in-demand category of yacht and has garnered the support of Formula 1 World Champions Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso, and adventurer Mike Horn as global brand ambassadors.
There has been an uptick in enquiries on the superyacht side too, and nowhere is Sunreef’s green technology showcased more spectacularly than on Sunreef 43M. A build project six years in the making, it has been pronounced as the world’s most eco-friendly superyacht in build. Sold by Ocean Independence’s Tim Quinlan to a longstanding charter Client who wanted to blaze a trail in the eco-yachting space, the project is due for completion in 2025.“The role that yacht Owners play in developing the technologies of the future is crucial,” says Lapp. “As a shipyard, we make all the efforts possible to push things forward and come up with sustainable concepts, but we need forwardthinking Owners to turn them into reality. The superyacht world needs a change; the Sunreef 43M Eco proves that luxury and responsibility should go together.”
