LEN N Y KR AV ITZ

Rock star. Actor. Photographer. Designer: Lenny Kravitz is the ultimate CREATIVE POLYMATH, transcending craft and defying categorisation, just like his music

T

here can’t be many global rock stars who are regarded just as highly in the exacting world of design, or who can so deftly turn their hand to acting or photography. But then Lenny Kravitz is not a conventional musician, always seeking to push the boundaries of his craft. As in uenced by Led Zeppelin as Al Green, Kravitz refused to be pigeonholed by record company executives who would only sign him as a 17-year-old if he changed his music. He steadfastly rejected their offers and today has sold more than 40 million records without ever compromising on his style. But as with all true creatives, there is always an itch to scratch. In 2003, having won four Grammy Awards, Kravitz was encouraged by the iconic French designer Philippe Starck to pursue another creative passion: design. He founded his eponymous company, Kravitz Design, that same year and has since designed interiors for luxury hotels, private residences as well as product design including cameras for Leica, a chandelier for Swarovski and a watch for Rolex. Kravitz even collaborated with Starck himself, who has described him as “a weapon of mass construction.” Kravitz’s refusal to be pigeonholed can even be seen in the way he lives, splitting his time between a beautiful apartment in Paris, a farm in Brazil (both of which he designed himself) and an Airstream trailer in the Bahamas, which he reaches by his Magnum 60 yacht. Named in 2018 as Creative Director at Dom Pérignon,

Kravitz has shot a campaign for the Champagne house featuring the likes of Susan Sarandon, Alexander Wang and his daughter, the actor Zoe Kravitz. He has also crafted three new designs for the house – limited edition 75cl bottles of Vintage 2008 and Rosé Vintage 2006, featuring hammered gold on the shield-shaped label and a case, a luxurious magnum case which becomes a candleholder and a sleek Champagne table. “I’ve designed objects, watches, furnishings, wallpapers, cameras, and interiors with a style that continuously evolves; in design, just like music, I try to follow an evolutionary course,” Kravitz says. “If you look at my projects, you’ll see that the farm in Brazil is much different from the apartment in Paris. But underneath, there’s a common sensibility that I can’t describe in words... I like to be eclectic, mixing diverse influences, just as I do with music.” The only son of Hollywood producer Sy Kravitz and television actor Roxie Roker, Kravitz acted in his youth and so when director Lee Daniels approached him to appear in his 2009 movie Precious, the big screen was an obvious next step. With critically acclaimed roles in The Hunger Games series and The Butler among others, acting is another platform for Kravitz’s talents. Currently touring with his eleventh studio album, Rise Vibration, Kravitz’s commitment to music remains undimmed. “Music and my relationship with music is quite deep, and it really is the nucleus of my creativity.”

ULTIMATE EXPRESSION The Netherlands has such a RICH HISTORY of yachting that the DUTCH invented the word itself. Discover the craftsmanship in BESPOKE commissions at Holland’s most STORIED SHIPYARDS

FEADSHIP

Regarded as the WORLD LEADER in pure custom superyachts, Feadship’s commitment to craftsmanship and the pursuit of PERFECTION sets it apart

F

ounded in 1949 but with roots stretching back a further century, Feadship has fostered the talents of generations of craftsmen. Priding itself on its “uncompromising pursuit of the impossible”, Feadship’s designers, they say “have the head of an engineer and the heart of an artist.” On average, a Feadship craftsman has 20 years of experience and has worked on 40 yachts, realising the seemingly impossible dreams of the yacht owners. “It takes an irrational, stubborn and unreasonable person… who understands that the route to impossible is the way to incredible. Someone who holds the beautiful conviction that good enough, is never ever good enough,” they say. When the experienced owners of superyacht Najiba ordered her, they were realising a long-held dream of commissioning a pure custom Feadship. Starting with a blank page “and the assumption that everything is possible,” Feadship worked seamlessly for four years with the owners, Philippe Briand and Vitruvius Yachts as designers and naval architects, Claudio Cicconetti on the general arrangement and interior designer Guillaume Rolland of Studio Christian Liaigre. The result is spectacular. With her slender lines and distinctive vertical bow, the 56m family superyacht more than lives up to her name, which means ‘noble’. The second largest Feadship to be built in aluminium to date, Najiba has proved herself exceptionally ef cient with an average fuel consumption up to 25% less than any equivalent motoryacht of this size. With a top speed of 17 knots, outstripping the original goal of 16 knots, and a range of over 6000 nm, Feadship’s exceptional engineering has surpassed all expectations. “The owners and their extended family could not believe their eyes when the nal result was revealed to them this morning,” revealed project manager Peter Wilson to the assembled Feadship craftsmen at her launch earlier this year. Once again, Feadship “made the impossible.”

HAKVOORT With a CENTURY of shipbuilding experience, this FAMILY-RUN yard combines traditional values with the latest technology for EXQUISITE pure custom builds

F

ounded by entrepreneur Albert Klzn Hakvoort in 1919 when he purchased a shipyard in Monnickendam, Hakvoort has remained in the same family’s hands ever since. Passed down from father to son, Hakvoort employs around 90 highly skilled staff, including entire families of craftsmen who have worked for the yard for generations, giving it a unique sense of community. Crafting bespoke motor yachts and sailing yachts of up to 65m in length, Havkoort has established itself as one of the world’s leading yards whilst retaining its personal touch, making the commissioning process really special. Earlier this year, Hakvoort delivered its 64m agship explorer superyacht, Scout, the largest ever built by the yard following 2016’s Just J's. The experienced Owner envisioned a “vintage maritime aesthetic”, according to Havkoort, which the yard realised in collaboration with H2 Yacht Design and Diana Yacht Design. An explorer vessel, Scout's twin Caterpillar 3512C maritime diesel engines have a range of 4,800 nm, while an ice-classed hull means that her American owners and crew can con dently take her anywhere in the world. The helicopter landing pad on the foredeck adds to her expedition capabilities. Scout's distinctive exterior gives way to an interior aesthetic described as “Jules Verne meets Ian Fleming meets Fritz Lang” by Jonny Horse eld, Founder of H2 Yacht Design. “We were inspired by the underwater world, sea creatures, and this industrial, nautical design philosophy – with a hint of a Bond villain’s lair.” Sleeping up to 10 guests, Scout's exquisite craftsmanship and classic maritime design theme are visible throughout. “Throughout the corridors, we have pulsing, ashing lights in the ceiling which is a nod to the pulsing lights of the power source of the submarine in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” says Horse eld. Havkoort interpreted the owners’ passion and transformed it into a reality.

hen we think of craftsmanship, we often associate it with the past: time-honoured traditions handed down through the generations, steadfastly rejecting modern technology. Which is why Silverlining, the British museum-quality furniture company which creates bespoke pieces for superyachts, aircraft and private residences, is all the more extraordinary. Established in 1985 by Mark Boddington, Silverlining upholds and celebrates traditional skills and craftsmanship while enthusiastically greeting the future.“Traditionally, craftsmanship was seen as someone working away by hand,” says Mark.“However, technology is now driving new-age craftsmanship.” Specialising in rare and exotic materials, Silverlining has completed over 80 projects on yachts, worked on private residential projects in 24 countries and won two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise. Silverlining’s designers continually push the boundaries of possibility in bespoke craftsmanship and furniture design to create pieces of extraordinary skill and beauty. “A designer shows what is possible and the maker and engineer make it

possible,” says Mark. As well as using specialist traditional skills, Silverlining’s designers use digitisation and algorithms to conjure up micro-level detail and random patterns from which software can instruct 3D printers, lasers and CNC machines to create pieces which need to be seen to be believed. From the Art Nouveau carved English walnut and leather desk which took over 6,200 workshop hours to complete, to the Japanese-inspired ‘Kimono’ screen created for motor yacht Amaryllis which comprises almost 3,100 individual pieces of dyed sycamore veneer and splits at the touch of a button to reveal a 50-inch television, no request is too complex. As for the future, Silverlining is committed to creating a legacy of excellence, including collaborating with Bangor University’s Biocomposite’s Centre and investing in the next generation of designer craftspeople with a PhD level ‘skills academy’. “It is important that designer and crafts person collaborate, using their minds and hands to pursue excellence,” says Mark “It is the desire to reach perfection that drives us – although perfection is infinite and therefore never achieved.”

NICHOL A S DE A N From remote controlled FISH TANKS to bespoke WATER PARKS, Ocean Independence makes its clients’ WILDEST DREAMS for their yachts a REALITY

N

icholas Dean sold his first yacht 41 years ago. Today, his experience helps Ocean Independence to offer its clients an extraordinary level of insight and knowledge when it comes to commissioning a superyacht. From the initial concept meeting with the client about their aspirations for their yacht to appointing a team of designers, naval architects and a shipyard, Nicholas and his team ensure a seamless process. “You could say it’s like conducting an orchestra,” he says. “The shipyard is the lead violinist, but you need all the instruments to create a symphony. The goal is to make sure the Owner gets the yacht they want – nothing else matters.” Currently working on a 90 metre superyacht as well as a 35 metre ‘downsizing’ yacht, Nicholas adapts to his clients’ needs. “With long standing clients, I have built up extensive lists of their likes and dislikes over time,” he says. “Most of the clients we deal with are making lifestyle decisions about what they want for themselves and their families and it’s important that we know how to interpret them. Every client will want something different and a yacht to feel proud of.” Ocean Independence’s full customisation service goes far beyond bespoke craftsmanship, as the dramatic increase in size in yacht

building in recent years demands cutting edge engineering. “When I started my career, a 30 metre yacht was regarded as a big boat. Now some of the boats have tenders of up to 20 metres. Size brings huge engineering challenges for a shipyard and requires a great number of specialists and craftsmen who push the boundaries of their skills simply because shipyards weren’t building this sort of tonnage 20 years ago.” A recent commission saw Ocean Independence install a huge remotecontrolled fish tank. “The yacht can be anywhere in the world and a gentleman in London will be adding the perfect level of salt to the water,” says Nicholas. Another client has grandchildren who love water sports so Ocean Independence created a bespoke water park for them. “It’s just over 6.5 tonnes of equipment and can’t be put on the yacht, so it’s shipped to the next destination and the crew on the support vessel put it up and take it down. The whole family absolutely loves it.” Unsurprisingly, the most satisfying element for Nicholas is showing the Owner and their family the finished yacht for the first time. “One of my best clients sat on the first yacht he’d ever had built and said to me ‘I’ve dreamt about this since I was a teenager.’ Our job is to take our clients’ passion and turn it into a reality, and that’s what we do.”

THE FUTURE FUTU RE IN OFSIG HT S SUPERYACHTING

FUTURE INSIGHTS IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

As the meaning of LUXURY and GENERATIONAL preferences shift, the yachting experience evolves. Superyacht THOUGHT LEADERS explore the technology, TRENDS and TRUTHS that are shaping the future

NICHOLAS DEAN, Managing Partner at Ocean Independence, shares his PREDICTIONS on the trends shaping YACHT CONSTRUCTION What trends are you noticing in the size of new build commissions?

What are the current trends in project refits?

In recent years, tonnage has increased considerably, as yachts grow ever larger. In part, this is a natural evolution as owners tend to progress to bigger yachts over the years. Whereas a 50m superyacht was once seen as the pinnacle when it came to size, today 80m-120m megayachts now make way for the vast proportions of gigayachts. However, in slight contradiction to this, there are also clients who are increasingly interested in accessing cruising areas and marinas where a 40m to 60m yacht is the ideal option. More still are starting to take the environmental impact of their yacht into consideration.

Yachting has a rich history and for some clients the challenge of a restoration project or a re-build of a piece of that history is very tempting. Bringing a classic yacht back to life, or re tting it to modern standards without losing any of its original charm, is an immensely enjoyable challenge. While more of a market constant than a trend, there are usually a good selection of potential yachts to choose from. A good starting point is to focus on either the original quality or pedigree of build or opt for a yacht with a real story to tell. Some have had famous owners, some have won prestigious races and others have a rich design heritage.

What developments are you noticing in new build commissions?

How do you envisage the future when it comes to design and craftsmanship of yacht commissions and refits?

Three areas have dominated new build commissions: custom, semi-custom/ limited editions and production yachts. All have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the client’s requirements. Full-custom yachts have a longer build time but are completely bespoke. Semi-custom yachts, meanwhile, benefit from economies of scale, yet can still challenge design boundaries and cater to individual requirements. Finally, production yachts give clients options on interiors, but no input on the fundamental construction process. While the market split remains quite consistent, several shipyards have enjoyed a good level of success with semi-custom yachts due to the level of f lexibility they offer.

One recent trend has been the explorer yacht concept. Many shipyards have followed this trend, but few have actually produced vessels with true explorer credentials. Designing a yacht that is capable of going anywhere in total comfort is a tough challenge and the resulting yachts have often been more on the ‘soft explorer’ side. Many other challenges face the yacht market, perhaps the most pressing for owners is sustainability and the potential green credentials that can be incorporated into a build. The huge advances emerging in engineering and technology mean that the industry has an opportunity to better balance the related environmental impact.

FLYING UNDER THE SEA For THRILLING RIDES both over and UNDER THE WATER, a sleek and speedy SEABOB might be just the ticket

I

t sounds too good to be true. Gliding across the ocean at speeds of up to 22km/h with the minimum of effort? The SEABOB, happily, is very real – and these achingly slick luxury water sports vehicles just keep on getting better, faster and lighter. Made in Germany by tech pros CAYAGO, the machines use a special E-Jet Power System, which works by sucking in water through a rotating impeller and forcing it out under high pressure. The process creates a powerful thrust and propels the SEABOB forward at thrilling speeds. All the pilot has to do is hold onto the control grips, jump on board and gently accelerate by pulling the trigger. The only downside? Swimming might feel like a drag after grabbing a ride on a SEABOB. As well as jetting across the surface of the water like a dolphin, the SEABOB can also dip beneath the surface – either way, the pilot simply steers the vehicle using bodyweight alone. Easy. The safety cut-off kicks in at 2.5 metres down, but these speed machines can be individually programmed to go much deeper for diehard divers. Meanwhile, a slick-looking control panel (that wouldn’t look out of place on a high performance sports car) keeps the pilot up to speed on depth, water temperature and battery power. Thanks to its cutting-edge, electro-technology, these speedy little water sleds are absolutely emission-free, too – and new innovations mean they generate less noise than ever. That makes it even easier to

fly alongside sea life, slowing down to take a closer look at anything that catches the eye. Handcrafted using carbon, precious metals and ceramic coatings, these stylish sea sleds look the part on a superyacht and can even be fully customized to match. Want to share your underwater adventures with your friends? Done. Two integrated camera systems are available as an upgrade on the F5 and the F5 S, and come as standard on the F5 SR (one in the nose and one in the console for action selfies) so that journeys can be filmed in HD, and transferred straight to mobile. Download the new SEABOB app to optimize your experience – and then start sharing your water-bound adventures far and wide as you explore corals beneath the surface in the Caribbean or jet across the Mediterranean. Take your pick from three speedy sea sled models, including the seriously charismatic SEABOB F5 SR, the most powerful of the trio, featuring two sleek rear fins for extra stability and sporty style. A chrome display console and tail will give this model serious panache on the water – plus, you can take your pick from the entire colour range (there are 12 to choose from) to ensure your ride is the hottest on the waves. With no driving licence required to power up one these sexy pieces of tech, what are you waiting for? There are oceans to be explored and waves to ride. Time to jump on board and pull that trigger. www.seabob.com

ENDEAVOUR CHARLES E. NICHOLSON

Built in 1934, this beautiful yacht – an original J Class – has a long and fascinating history. Originally commissioned by aviation pioneer Tom Sopwith in an effort to win the America’s Cup, he transferred his know-how in craftsmanship and

technology from the aviation

industry and applied it to the 40m Endeavour. His efforts paid off. In her first season, she went on a winning streak and became a wellknown name on the racing circuit. In the years that followed, the boat was passed down through many owners and had many close shaves, once being bought just hours before her sched uled d emolition and another time being plucked from the Medina River in Cowes. Resilient to the end, Endeavour invariably pulled through and in 1984 was bought by American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer. With a passionate Owner behind her, she was lovingly restored at Royal Huisman before being raced across the world once again. A further refit in 2010 under a new Owner saw 100,000 man hours spent on her in New Zealand , with 14 d eck winches removed and a new d eck structure, rig, sails and

M I MC AIN T ILE RAE D E SL L EAM ARR CDH E I N E This elegant 33m explorer yacht, d elivered just last year, is the fifth in the Nauta Air series from Italian yard Cantiere delle Marche, famed for yachts such as Stella di Mare and Yolo. With a focus on comfort and informality, Mimi La Sard ine is a strikingly original boat, filled with natural light and incorporating beautifully crafted interiors, including materials such as weathered oakwood and Galizia granite. The yacht has four spacious guest staterooms and a stunning Owner’s apartment on the main deck forward – all kitted out with beautiful Italian furnishings from the likes of Flexform and B&B. Up to 12 guests can enjoy days spent lounging in the main saloon, chatting about the day’s adventures and planning itineraries at the timber table in the upper salon, or soaking up the sun on one of the inviting outdoor spaces. Further examples of craftsmanship can be seen in the huge windows throughout the boat, which lead out onto stern terraces, seamlessly blend ing interior and exterior spaces. Built to travel anywhere in the world, and with room for up to six crew members, Mimi La Sardine will keep you comfortable on even the longest journeys.

N Y M P H M AT T H E W S B O AT C O M PA N Y One glance at this beautiful 23m motor yacht and it’s clear that she is a shining example of masterful craftsmanship. Originally built in Ohio back in 1913, she has since been lovingly restored over seven years in Virginia without losing any of her unique charm and character. With original features, such as the double-planked mahogany hull, pine decking and striking black and white tiling in the galley, this is a yacht that wears her history on her sleeve, though many amenities have been restored to ensure that she remains a comfortable and luxurious yacht. The engine room, for example, has been completely updated and she now benefits from a new 6 cylinder John Deere Turbo-charged engine and a 17KW Cummins Gen Set. Meanwhile, a full beam master stateroom sits across from the guest head , complete with a seating area and an elegant clawfoot bath tub. With space for four guests in beautifully appointed and charming suites, this is a yacht that will turn head s and win hearts wherever she goes.

Meanwhile, fold -d own bulwarks either side of the cockpit create balconies and increase the size of the beach club – really magnifying the sense of space and helping to bring the spirit of the ocean inside. For the Owner, there are floor-to-ceiling wind ows in the master stateroom to take in sweeping views as well as direct access to the beach club. The tend er well, meanwhile, converts to a pool, where guests can cool off with rest and refreshments under a Bedouin canopy. In terms of performance, a lifting keel and a square top mainsail have been incorporated, and the downwind sails are stored on a self-stowing reel below deck, adding the finishing touches to this elegant cruising sloop. P O RLO AS S I NRAVII S I This is one masterful yacht, built by Italian yard Rossinavi as the second in their Prince Shark series. There are multiple show-stopping elements to this majestic aluminium yacht, many of which stem from d esign techniques borrowed from military vessels – but one of the most striking is the innovative flybridge, which gives guests uninterrupted views from nine metres up. Clever design and shrewd craftsmanship means that guests on this level are protected by smoked glass wind ows, allowing them to relax without interruption from heavy winds or scorching sun. Another highlight is the spa pool, lined with beautiful Murano glass tiles and complete with a decorative waterfall. These elegant touches extend to the rest of the boat where 19th century paintings, crystal chandeliers (one of which stretches across three decks) and precious materials including varnished ebony and marble set the tone for a superior vessel with bags of charm. This is one strikingly elegant yacht that benefits from both form and function.

AT H E N A R O YA L H U I S M A N Royal Huisman’s biggest ever yacht is a triumph of engineering, craftsmanship and style. At 90m, this award -winning, triple-masted schooner makes an instant impression, thanks to her graceful silhouette and unique profile. Launched in 2004 and now fresh out of an extensive refit, the yacht was originally inspired by Creole, an eye-catching 63m wood en schooner built in 1927 and owned by the Gucci family. Athena’s classic interiors by Rebecca Brad ley Design are a triumph befitting of such a stylish heritage – with lightly stained mahogany

Sleeping ten guests across five attractive staterooms, she makes an excellent choice for groups, with a charming library, inviting socializing areas and impressive entertainment facilities. She is a unique yacht too, with superior craftsmanship in her blood. One interesting example of this lies in an innovative, sound proofed passage which sweeps through the engine room, allowing guests to peak in on activity below d eck. With room for 19 crew, and all the latest amenities and mod ern comforts, guests are guaranteed a cool and comfortable stay on Athena. This is a yacht with world ly wow factor and in fact, she is the largest sailing yacht available for charter today.

PA R T N E R FEATURE

ROSÉ ALL DAY AIX Rosé might be complex enough to WIN AWARDS, but this dusky pink wine from the SOUTH OF FRANCE is easy-drinking enough to enjoy every day

"I

wanted to make a rosé that was easy to drink, but also complex and exclusive enough to win gold medals and be awarded good reviews around the world,” says Eric Kurver, the man behind the enormously popular AIX Rosé. In both respects, he has succeeded. And then some. The 130 year-old winery, which former advertising executive Kurver bought together with his wife back in 2009 and renamed Domaine Saint Aix, is situated an hour out of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. The location (and altitude, at 420m above sea level) is ideal for the craft of wine-making, with mineral-rich soils, warm days and cool nights. “The frequent mistral wind ensures the tendrils are blown dry,” says Kurver. “And then, of course, we have at least 300 days of sunshine.” There are worse places in the world to nd your calling. In addition to the convenient geography and dreamy weather conditions, AIX Rosé is also organicallyproduced, using a certi ed, nitrogen-based technique to avoid oxidation. “It is very important to avoid oxidation when making a top rosé,” explains Kurver. “In the past they used a lot of sulphate for this, but we took a different approach and use less than a quarter of the amount than is allowed by regulation.” Kurver is famously meticulous about production methods and the results speak for

themselves; the salmon-pink wine he helped bring to life now has cult status in countries all over the world. Fresh and elegant, AIX is a winning blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault; it’s the sort of wine that can be enjoyed all day long, just as Kurver always envisaged. To that end, he decided to make the wine available in large formats, from magnums and jeroboams to the mammoth 15-litre nebuchadnezzar. “The idea behind this is that people can share a bottle with the whole family or a group of friends, for example,” says Kurver. People seem only too happy to oblige – and from superyacht parties in Monaco and long lunches in London to birthdays and beach parties in the Caribbean, there are endless, large format bottles of AIX being opened, shared and enjoyed. The experts are also in agreement that AIX is a wine that deserves recognition and praise. Right from the very rst harvest, it was winning prestigious awards across the world, including the Mondial du Rosé 2016 in Cannes. For Kurver, it’s exactly as he envisioned when he took over the vineyard a decade ago, blind tasting endless varieties of Provence rosé and using the results to concoct the ultimate blend. “It’s our ambition to be make one of the best rosé wines in the world,” he says. Some might say he’s already succeeded. www.aixrose.com
