INSIGHTS THE NEXT GENERATION

FAST & FUTURISTIC

A LEJA NDRO AG AG

One day every car will be ELECTRIC. So believes Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of FORMULA E, the world's first fully-electric racing championship. With legions of NEXT GENERATION FANS and top AUTOMOTIVE manufacturers clambering to join in, not only is the ABB FIA Formula E Championship reinventing racing, but it is driving serious, tangible INNOVATION in the electric REVOLUTION

"E

veryone thought we were absolutely crazy!" laughs Alejandro Agag. The founder and CEO of motorsport's newest, most exciting – and most surprising – series certainly didn't let the early scepticism from racing purists get in the way of his vision. The Spanish entrepreneur came to the table in late 2012 with a plan to revolutionise racing in the 21st century by creating the world’s first fully-electric international single-seater street racing series. And revolutionise it he did. "I was already in normal motorsports but I felt that there was something missing," he says. "Motorsport was losing relevance and I thought it was a great opportunity and a great time to create a new championship that would bring together sustainability and racing." Fast forward four seasons and the ABB FIA Formula E Championship has irrevocably changed the motorsport industry. "I was hoping Formula E would be as big as it is today, but I definitely didn't imagine it could happen so fast," says Agag. "I really didn't expect so many manufacturers, so many sponsors and all these cities to be on board by now; the progress in four seasons could not have been predicted. We are excitingly attracting a younger audience – Generation Z – with a 347% rise in the number of 13- to 17-year-olds engaging with our online content, something which is unparalleled in sport right now. [And] this highly desired audience is leading to renowned manufacturers and partners putting their name to the series, coming together to reinvent racing." Next season looks set to be Formula E's biggest yet, with 13 races in 12 cities across five continents starting in Riyadh's Ad Diriyah district on 15 December 2018. For the first time, 11 teams will be on track as

HWA, Nissan and BMW come on board. With the manufacturers – big hitters like Audi, Jaguar and Venturi, as well as next generation newcomers like NIO – all striving to reach new levels of e-mobility and showcase what they are capable of, the series has become a catalyst for progress. Companies are continuously refining the design of electric vehicles, ultimately improving the driving experience for everyday road car users all over the world. The rules of Formula E are strictly controlled. Manufacturers can produce (and innovate) their own powertrains – motor, gearbox, suspension etc. – but there is a spec chassis and battery, meaning spending is reduced and there is less chance of one team having a significant advantage. Earlier this year, they unveiled the Gen2 racing car, something Agag described as "a new era in electric racing". Designed to be used for the next three seasons, the car has almost double the energy storage capacity and the range of the current car, enabling teams and drivers to complete a full race at higher speeds, without making a mid-race car swap. The 'race to road' technology transfer that has resulted from this design evolution is already visible in cars like Aston Martin's RapidE concept car that integrates Formula E's battery technology, the NIO EP9 or, most recently, the Jaguar I-PACE. "Formula E is more than just a race, it is part of the electric revolution in the motor industry and that’s how we will have an impact on the world," says Agag. "We have a mission that will make our society cleaner and better for future generations. Our vision is that one day, every car in the world will be electric. But to achieve that, you need to provide a practical solution; that’s where we come in."

WE HAVE A MISSION THAT WILL MAKE OUR SOCIET Y CLEANER AND BET TER FOR FUTURE GENER ATIONS

THE FUTURE OF SUPERYACHTING

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE NEXT GENERATION? The next generation's PASSIONS will PUSH yachting in NEW DIRECTIONS

As the meaning of LUXURY and GENERATIONAL preferences shift, the yachting experience evolves. Superyacht THOUGHT LEADERS explore the technology, TRENDS and TRUTHS that are shaping the future

S T E WA R T C A M P B E L L B O AT I N T E R N AT I O N A L "I think the future will see more, larger semi-custom projects built on spec. These make up around 57% of the global fleet over 24m right now, but 66% of the order book. How have explorer yachts, expedition yachts and support vessels reshaped the yachting experience?

W hat does 'pushing the boundaries' mean to the next generation of sailing yacht owners?

You're talking about niche markets, but I think it adds to the diversity in terms of design and capability. I love seeing boat shows where there is a mix of explorers, support vessels and traditional yachts. As an industry I think we're appealing to a wider range of clients with different interests and passions.

Pushing the boundaries will mean visiting the remotest places with a profound curiosity and respect for nature and the environment. It will mean going to areas where the use of fossil fuels is discouraged and even not allowed, which will call for hybrid, electric power, and innovations in the realms of sustainability.

yacht designs will adapt accordingly. If I am cruising

home – entertainment systems, streaming services,

A new generation of owners want to experience the most spectacular places without limits, but still in matchless luxury. This is driving the development of tenders, submarines and aircraft. You can have so much more excitement and fun with the technology available today.

The sailing yacht of the future has all the luxury one can imagine, it is light, has ample space and is unrivalled in performance. On paper, the sailing yacht of the future is nothing different, but the new, exciting ways in which we reach these goals and create the ideal yacht, is certain to evolve.

How has the concept of the explorer yacht evolved?

How will new technology influence design?

There's recognition that a true explorer is not just about exterior design, it’s about capability. In the past, if you wanted real expedition capability, you were limited to refits of retired navy or commercial ships. Today, a new build crossover between a yacht and a ship is a better option, without compromising comfort, noise and vibrations, layout or looks.

Technology will give us the opportunity to combine the qualities of materials, such as titanium, carbon fibre, glass, anodised aluminium and more, to come closer to the ultimate client idea. Sailing yachts, for example, will become lighter weight and faster, while still maintaining the highest levels of comfort. Technology will enable us to come ever-closer to the perfect yacht.

How does Damen transfer its military and commercial expertise into the yachting realm?

Will the yacht's length and capacity matter as much to the next generation?

We emphasise sharing knowledge and experience, for example, through our centralised research department, but also by working in mixed teams. Our designers and engineers have a mix of yachting, naval and commercial shipbuilding backgrounds – that diversity breeds innovation. Hybrid power is an example of technology we transferred to our yachting portfolio.

Size will matter but not necessarily in a "bigger is better" way. Some of our clients come back for smaller yachts. Small can be beautiful, and small and beautiful is a perfect combination. There is a saying from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of Le Petit Prince: “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add but when there is nothing to take away!”

Have your clients changed in recent years?

W hich kind of yachts will stand the test of time?

FLORIAN EDER N E X T G E N E R AT I O N C H A R T E R C L I E N T "The next generation will drive change within the industry. They spend longer periods on board and for a long time, I want the same amenities I have at high speed internet. My generation primarily communicates via apps; in future, this kind of technology will play a larger role in charter booking."

JEREMY COMPORT OCEAN INDEPENDENCE "Many clients have been privileged to have had plenty of past yachting experience, but their idea of luxury is slightly different. They are focused on functionality, quality and longevity and not necessarily the prestige. They want the yacht to have

HOW HAS THE YACHTING EXPERIENCE EVOLVED? FAMILY FUN, the draw of NATURE and WELLNESS are changing the yachting experience

HOLGER KAHL N O B I S K R U G S H I P YA R D How is the industry evolving to meet the needs of the next generation? Clients are getting younger. They are tech-orientated and want sophisticated superyachts focused on functionality, quality and flexibility. It is becoming less about just outward appearances and more about a yacht's personal, experiential value. Can the superyacht industry learn from other industries? Certainly. Nobiskrug also builds military vessels so there is a lot of knowledge share in house between these two unique sectors. The beauty of our yacht projects is that every last element is custom-made so we are constantly developing and learning lessons. Are owners influencing innovation, or is innovation influencing Owners?

TOBY MACLAURIN OCEAN INDEPENDENCE "Families have hugely influenced the superyacht experience over the past few years. An expanding family has often been the catalyst for buying or building a larger yacht but increasingly

familial

considerations

are

also

influencing

everything from yacht design to crew choice. Yachts are designed with flexible spaces that can be converted into playrooms, children's cabins have adjacent rooms for nannies, there are large garages with the latest toys, and sometimes school rooms. Even charter enquiries today regularly centre on the needs of the children rather than the principal guests – the exciting toys and family-friendly destinations."

INCREASINGLY, FAMILIAL CONSIDER ATIONS ARE ALSO INFLUENCING EVERY THING FROM YACHT DESIGN TO THE HIRING OF CREW

Owners frequently influence innovation. Our owners in particular are not afraid to break boundaries and challenge the status quo. Through taking risks and trying new things, we are able to bring the requests of an owner to life in ways that may not have seemed possible. Take Sailing Yacht A's ground-breaking underwater observation pod; it is entirely unique and pushes glass technology to new levels. W hat role will sustainability and the environment play in yacht design in the future? Sustainability and the protection of our planet will rightfully become a top priority. Future environmental restrictions, regulations and concerns will have to be addressed with our designs. Whether it is quiet and efficient systems that remove the need for an anchor that can potentially damage coral reefs, or alternative propulsion systems with improved exhaust and different fuel sources, this is something we are always investigating. How will the growing importance of privacy and security impact future yachts? From access to cabins via fingerprints and iris recognition, to high tech sensors under the decks and underwater, security technology will be at the heart of a yacht's engineering to keep owners secure. Here Nobiskrug can capitalise on our military expertise. Do you see refit and conversion projects becoming more desirable in future?

P E T E R VA N D E R Z A N D E N H E E S E N YA C H T S "Today's clients and guests want a connection with nature and

Yes. There are more yachts on the water but the number of shipyards is not increasing. staterooms, and expanses of glass let panoramas in. Health and wellness have also become more important over the last decade, with more requests for wellness areas, gyms and spas as well as bathrooms with therapy showers, horizontal showers and steam rooms."

Yachting is one of the only things that offers true privacy, luxury, individuality, flexibility and escape. This will become even more true in the future. That is exciting.

A FUTURE OF FIRSTS For four decades, Holland's HEESEN YACHTS has had its eyes firmly set on the future, NEVER WAVERING in its pursuit of innovation, next generation solutions and PIONEERING LEVELS OF LUXURY

I

nnovation, craftsmanship and pioneering design have been at the heart of everything that Heesen Yachts does since it was founded by Frans Heesen in 1978. Its insatiable quest to make its clients' dreams come to life has seen it relentlessly push the boundaries of what is deemed possible to reach new heights of luxury and efficiency. As a result, Heesen has always been a shipyard of firsts. From building the first yacht to reach 50 knots back in 1988 to becoming the first yard to implement the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) – arguably one of the most significant performance advances in superyacht design, to developing the Hull Vane, an underwater foil that harnesses the power of the waves and transforms it into kinetic energy, Heesen likes to rethink and revolutionise superyachts as we know them. Nothing drives this revolution quite like being challenged by visionary clients and Heesen like to say that there is 'no such thing as mission impossible'. If a client has the courage to think of radical design, the yard's specialist team of 850 – world-class engineers, designers, naval architects, welders and outfitters – will do their utmost to make it happen. While Heesen originally only built aluminium semi-displacement yachts, it has since created an extremely diverse hull portfolio, offering aluminium and steel hull constructions in a variety of designs that will

serve as platforms for an array of yachting lifestyles. Its latest delivery, M/ Y Omaha, for example, is the yard's first 50m Steel Class, its round bilge steel hull with bulbous bow designed for comfort and unparalleled seakeeping. With the next generation of Owner turning to Heesen to build their dreams, the yard has noted a change in priorities. The need for speed has made way for sustainability and conservation, and a desire to be closer and kinder to nature. "Efficiency is the new buzzword," says Peter van der Zander, Heesen's general manager of design and development. "In the words of the great Mahatma Ghandi, 'You have to become the change you want to see in the world'. We are fully embracing this philosophy, putting all our effort into building more efficient yachts that use less fuel to take you further." Heesen's 2017 launch, the 50m M/ Y Home is a poster child for this mentality, being the first hull to couple hybrid propulsion with the proven FDHF to combine efficiency, capability and comfort. "With every new yacht design comes the challenge to find new solutions – something that we pride ourselves on achieving – and new to the market innovations, from which every future Heesen yacht benefits," says Arthur Brouwer, CEO at Heesen. "From custom to semi-custom, displacement to fast-displacement, every Heesen is as different as its Owner." www.heesenyachts.com

IN CONVERSATION WITH BARBARA MÜLLER

BA RBA R A M ÜLLER Travel guru, yacht authority, EXPERIENCE CREATOR and much more, charter BROKER Barbara Müller has seen the yachting experience EVOLVE over the years

I

t is peak charter season in the Med and senior charter broker at Ocean Independence, Barbara Müller, is flat out planning itineraries, organising embarkations everywhere from St Tropez to Corfu and liaising with captains and guests. But with 12 years of experience as a charter manager, Müller relishes the hustle. No request is too difficult. "It is all about making the clients completely happy," she says. But what is it that makes clients happy today?" Today's charter experience comes down to so much more than the yacht," says Müller emphatically. "The whole package is important. Every detail. An outstanding, multi-talented crew, food prepared by a Michelin-worthy chef, an exciting selection of the best toys." While Müller admits that client priorities have evolved – they increasingly value things like authentic experiences, health and wellness, being close to the sea – she says that the most popular charter destinations have not changed for years. Glamorous hotspots like the French Riviera, Sardinia and Ibiza have been attracting discerning travellers for decades, and Müller doesn't see this changing any time soon. "They are eternal classics," she says. "They have something for everyone – the best restaurants, chic nightlife, great shopping and culture, excellent infrastructure, but also natural beauty and plenty of activities for all ages." That doesn't mean that more unusual destinations aren't in demand. As expedition yachts grow in popularity and owners take their vessels off the beaten track, charter requests for destinations like Greenland,

Norway and Antartica are becoming more common. "It is certainly no longer just about being seen," observes Müller. "More clients want to go on real adventures; to cross an ocean, to go diving in Raja Ampat, to cruise the fjords in Norway or discover Antarctica." The wider trend for experiential travel goes hand-in-hand with this. Superyachts are becoming platforms for extreme experiences and for enabling guests to make the most of their surroundings. From heliskiing to driving snowmobiles in Antarctica, Müller says that brokers are planning more charters further afield than ever before. Today, really adventurous travel can be further enhanced by the addition of a shadow vessel – a boat designed to cruise alongside the primary superyacht carrying larger and more unusual tenders like submersibles and aircrafts, as well as fuel and extra crew. "Chartering support vessels is a fairly new phenomenon that has come with clients wanting to go further afield with more tenders and toys," says Müller. "The possibilities that come from adding a support vessel – something like the 69m Game Changer – are very exciting." As the charter experience evolves, is the role of the charter broker changing? "We still need to be experts about the yachts and destinations, but now we also need to have detailed knowledge of unique experiences, adventures, and toys," says Müller. "Communication has also changed. Clients use WhatsApp more than ever during the charter process so everything is a lot faster moving. You really have to do your research and know what you are talking about."

MUSE

BANNENBERG & ROWELL Effortless and free-flowing, there are few boundaries between indoor and outdoor living on the 90m concept, Muse. A partnership between Bannenberg & Rowell and Nobiskrug, Muse is an antidote to rugged, masculine superyachts of today; her lines are gently curvaceous and gracefully feminine. Lifestyle is at the heart of every inch of this concept, and spaces shift naturally for days that make the most of the surroundings and life al fresco. The flush deck pool is unquestionably a stand out feature, with the glass panels at its base cleverly diffusing natural light into the main salon. The open-sided beach club is made for the good life, complete with a hidden bar and a sunshade that rises hydraulically out of the deck. But, if a future client prefers, this area could also be converted into a peaceful, enclosed spa and wellness area. Seven guest suites are located forward on main deck while the striking owner’s suite spreads out over its own deck. The master cabin's location allows for the best viewing angles aft and breathtaking panoramic views from the suite’s rotating bed. Muse incorporates Bannenberg & Rowell's signature Infinity Decks; the teak on the aft decks glides in an almost liquid fashion over the aft and side edges, smoothing any distinction between the various levels and causing boundaries to disappear into the horizon.

BAGLIETTO 4 3 M FA S T H T

F R A N C E S C O PA S Z K O W S K I D E S I G N As you would expect from a Baglietto, the 43m Fast HT boasts an ultra-modern profile and presents the opportunity for clients to customise with a focus on innovation and technology. This platform has been a key design in the Italian yard's portfolio over the years, and in late 2017, Francesco Pasznowski reworked and updated it to give it even more appeal for the next generation. Streamlined and incredibly sleek, the upgraded 43m Fast HT features lowered bulwarks, vast windows and enhanced interior volumes. Inside, luxury designer and architect Margherita Casprini has created a calming, sophisticated scheme, that plays with classic neutrals and open, contemporary spaces. The yacht can accommodate up to ten guests split between five staterooms, including a master suite, VIP cabin and two twins with Pullman berths. The inclusion of a new hard top creates a pleasant shaded area on the flybridge, while on the sides two terraces open to the sea. Unsurprisingly, the 43M Fast is pretty speedy. Her high performance is delivered through a pair of MTU 12V4000 M93L engines that allow for a maximum speed of 28 knots and comfortable cruising at a still-nippy 25 knots.

KOTMH I ROT YCD O The latest concept from the ThirtyC design studio, 53m Komodo aims to rethink prescribed superyacht norms, creating onboard spaces and experiences unlike any other vessel of its size. With three expansive decks dedicated to guests, Komodo is designed for the good life: entertaining, socialising, relaxing, coming together over wine and great food. The double height main salon is as suited to parties as it is to cosy chats or relaxing with a book. The floor-to-ceiling glass of the main deck windows, as well as glass ceiling panels, fill the yacht with inspiring views and natural light. On the mezzanine upper deck, the atrium-style upper salon and dining area provide unbeatable spots for sun-drenched morning coffees and after-hours stargazing. On the lower deck there are four guest cabins, while the main deck owners' stateroom is situated forward, complete with its own private Jacuzzi. The yacht also features a spacious beach club and tender garage, capable of storing an eight-metre tender and larger toys such as submersibles or on board stowable aircraft.

FCLA NET I EXR EPD ELL LOE MRA R CEH ER Total flexibility in function; that is what the new superyacht concept from Italian yard CdM has been designed for. Featuring naval architecture by Hydro Tec, the 39m Flexplorer will be as at home in Monaco as it will be taking guests on experiential expeditions in remote seas. Built in steel and aluminium to RINA class, she blends an explorer's soul with the superyacht sophistication you would expect from a yard like CdM. Quiet and stable, her full displacement hull will also mean economical cruising, with twin Caterpillar C32 diesel engines enabling a maximum speed of 14 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles at her cruising speed of 10 knots. Inside, she is spacious and comfortable. The

current

accommodation for 10 guests in five en-suite cabins as well as crew quarters for up to six members of staff, and her future owner will be able to select an interior designer to craft the perfect scheme. Crucially for a yacht made for ocean adventures, she will boast an expansive aft deck that allows for easy access to the water for toys, tenders and guests. This is an exciting opportunity for an owner to come in and personalise a rather special project that will be ready to hit the water in 2021.

MANTIS 70

D I X O N YA C H T D E S I G N A British studio with nearly three decades of yacht design to its name, Dixon Yacht Design is known for its forward-looking, innovative ideas and yachts that push the boundaries, particularly in the sailing sector. The 70m Mantis 70 concept is no exception. Wonderfully clean lines create a sleek, sophisticated and contemporary profile for a high performance sailing yacht that will be extremely comfortable to live on, complete with impressive environmental credentials. Constructed from aluminium, the Mantis 70’s hull with reverse bow profile offers an elegantly long waterline length and a relatively narrow beam. As a result, this will be an extremely easily-driven yacht propelled by a state-of-the-art twin DynaRig set up. No strangers to designing lifting keels for large superyachts, Dixon Yacht Design will ensure the one fitted to the Mantis 70 will completely optimise stability, weight and performance.

XVAL-3 0 0 N OOSSANEN With a clean, razor-sharp profile, the XL-300 is a lesson in innovation, proportion and performance. A collaboration between Van Oossanen Naval Architecture and exterior designer Federico Fiorentino, this 47.5m has been designed specifically for the US market. The unique hull design of the XL-300 will ultimately enable clients to build the longest yachts ever within the respective 200, 300 and 500 gross tonne boundaries. To put this into numerical perspective, the XL-300's 20% extra hull length will provide 10% more interior space, along with 30% to 40% more exterior deck space. The increase in volume allows for an unexpectedly large exterior lounge, a substantial pool and open sunbathing areas, as well a helipad on the foredeck and a sideloading garage with accommodation for two Jet Skis and a 6.25m tender. Interior design, including across the five staterooms, will be completed by Designer, Cristiano Gatto, known for creating refreshingly uncluttered and elegant spaces.

B L AM A CL C OKC AT 3 5 LM MCKEON Spacious, stable and blessed with a shallow draft ideal for exploring distant bays, catamarans may not be as common as monohull superyachts yet, but a new design series looks poised to change this. Designed by renowned British yacht designer Malcolm McKeon in association with BlackCat, a brand founded by Australian Olympic yachtsman Mitch Booth, the BlackCat is a new concept of catamaran that promises to set the standard in large luxury multihulls. Balancing state-of-the-art design and high-performance, BlackCat superyachts will be the largest single structure carbon-fibre yachts in the world. The series was initially revealed with a 50m design, and last year McKeon added the design for a 35m. Lightweight, low-drag and simple to sail, it will reach speeds up to 32 knots while still keeping fuel and crew costs down. With a beam of 14m, the 35m has a large internal volume and a deck space; significantly larger than that of a monohull with an equivalent length. In fact, a cost analysis of the BlackCat 35 indicates the metre-to-metre cost comes in below that of a carbon fibre monohull of the

same

volume,

making

this

catamaran

an

extremely attractive alternative for any Owner considering a 40m to 45m monohull.

PELORUS offer the NEXT-LEVEL in ADVENTURE TRAVEL, designing ground-breaking and exciting EXPERIENCES not usually associated with a traditional yachting itinerary

"O

wners and charterers are wanting to explore further afield,” says Jimmy Carroll, co-founder of superyacht expedition specialists, Pelorus. "They want more intimate encounters with wildlife, indigenous tribes and nature. Operating in lesser-known parts of the world, however, demands a huge amount of research and logistical preparation. This is where we come in." Specialising in designing and executing yacht expeditions to the less travelled, remote regions around the world, Pelorus works closely with yacht sales, charter and management teams as well as captains to make extraordinary yachting experiences a reality. From planning routes and taking care of the technical logistics, to drawing on the team’s extensive expertise in designing land and sea-based ST experiences to craft unique itineraries, Pelorus is the next step in experiential travel. The passion for exploring remote regions of the world was triggered in the foothills of the Hindu Kush in Asia, with founders and former British Army Officers Carroll and Geordie Mackay-Lewis leading reconnaissance units on long-range desert patrols and helicopter operations. The knowledge they forged and skills they acquired – meticulous attention to detail, matchless planning, ingenuity and determination – during these years lay the foundation upon which Pelorus is built. Both fellows of the Royal Geographical Society, their CVs would stand up against the hardiest adventurers – mountain leaders, advanced divers, paragliding pilots, skydiving – and they both have significant

experience within the luxury and yachting sphere. Their unique fusion of credentials made them well-placed to envision yachts as the ultimate platforms for extraordinary experiences. “By using the yacht as a platform, we create experiences that allow guests to go further than ever before,” says Mackay-Lewis. “Paraglide from the top of a snow covered glacier directly to your yacht in the Norwegian Fjords, helicopter from your yacht deep into the highlands in Papua New Guinea to explore native tribes or work alongside marine biologists in an exclusive shark tagging conservation project in the Galapagos.” Pelorus is able to gain exclusive access to sites across the world – many considered out of bounds or completely inaccessible – through their enviable black book of contacts, helping captains and brokers take itineraries to new heights. Deep rooted and far reaching their contact list includes marine biologists, conservationists, TV producers, world-famous photographers, ice pilots, scientists, archaeologists, military experts and dive guides; all of whom possesses an intricate knowledge of their respective fields. For clients looking to be surprised again – to be pioneers of discovery – Pelorus make it possible to explore and enjoy the world’s most exclusive and untouched regions in total privacy and safety. “This is genuine 21st-century exploration,” says Carroll.” But with levels of luxury and comfort equally as suited to St Tropez or St Barths. The potential is huge.” www.pelorusx.com

SUPER-STYLE With its strikingly ELEGANT profile and SOPHISTICATED, MINIMALIST interior, the 49.9m ENDEAVOUR 2 is an explorer worthy of Italy’s stylish AEOLIAN ISLANDS

L

aunched by world-class Italian shipyard Rossinavi in 2017, Endeavour 2 is a beautifully balanced superyacht. Designed by Enrico Gobbi and Team For Design for reliability and long range cruising, her chic interior by Achille Salvagni is an ode to the ocean; contemporary and restrained, like an urban loft. Accommodation for 10 guests is spread across five staterooms including a stunning full-beam owner’s cabin and a convertible VIP suite. Spaces are bright and airy, bathed in sunlight streaming through the yacht’s oversized windows. It is rather fitting that this Italian beauty is typically found cruising the Italian coastline, tracing Sicilly’s curves and weaving around the Aeolian Islands. Scattered across the Tyrrhenian Sea, these seven volcanic islands and several uninhabited islets north of Sicily are a UNESCO world heritage site and offer visitors a feast for the senses. Seas of the bluest blue, sandy inlets, fragrant lemon groves, exquisite cuisine and tiny white-washed towns combine with a quintessentially Italian languor in one of the Western Med’s most captivating yachting destinations. Named after Aeolus, the ancient demigod of the winds, the Aeolian Islands are cinematically pretty. There is Lipari, the largest island, where you can tuck into Pumice Stone Bay for a day of snorkelling and watersports. The pocket-sized paradise of Panarea is a haven for the fashionable, its elegant towns embodying la dolce vita. Nature lovers will fall for charismatic Stromboli, the Aeolian’s most active volcano, which still broods and splutters menacingly. For a lush, blooming landscape at odds with the volcanic terrain of her sister islands, visit Salina. A charter here would feel incomplete without a visit to Capri and Amalfi. As beautiful as they are glamorous, they have been attracting artists and stars for centuries. Amalfi’s landscape rolls with citrus gardens making the local limoncello a must-try. Venture off the beaten track on Capri, and visit tiny Anacapri for the views or take the chair lift to Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island. Anyone who has spent time hidden among the bays and beaches of this volcanic coastline will know that scent of lemons and romance of the white washed towns will stay with you long after you disembark. Weekly charter rates for Endeavour 2 from EUR 275,000. Please contact an Ocean Independence charter broker for more information.
