The University of the West Indies (UWI) is inviting applications for the prestigious UWI Open Scholarships 2010/2011. Each year the University awards scholarships to top performing students across the region to pursue undergraduate degrees at the regional institution. The UWI Open Scholarships will cover tuition, residence costs, both on and off campus, and contributions to books and meals. Pro Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies at the University, Professor Alvin Wint said, “The Open Scholarships programme is one of the ways that UWI is attracting and rewarding high achievers among the region’s students. The scholarships are particularly attractive to students from our contributing countries where, unlike Barbados and Trinidad, tertiary tuition is not government subsidised. We are very happy to offer the Open Scholarships in these financially trying times.” For the academic year 2009/2010, 41 students were awarded UWI Open Scholarships valued at US$ 1.1 million. Eligible persons are high school or state college graduates who are first-time applicants to a government-sponsored undergraduate degree programme offered at any of the University’s four campuses. Current first-year UWI students are also eligible to apply for the Open Scholarships and all applicants must be citizens of one of UWI’s contributing countries. In keeping with international best practices, the application process, which is in its second year as a completely online procedure, will require students to complete a 500 word personal essay outlining career aspirations and reasons for choice of degree programme at UWI. Applicants must also provide evidence of , community involvement and co-curricular activities. All applications for the UWI Open Scholarships 2010/2011 must be submitted at www.uwi.edu/openscholarship2011 by January 31, 2011.
