A Message from the Head of School Dear Out-of-Door Community, As Out-of-Door continues to evolve and grow, one of our top priorities needs to be recruiting, retaining and developing the best teaching talent to challenge and inspire our students to reach their full potential. To prepare for the arrival of our sixth graders to the Uihlein Campus, better meet the needs of a rapidly growing enrollment, and to staff new programs and electives such as Mandarin, we launched national searches last spring to staff eight new faculty positions for the coming school year. Identifying talent and matching it with our mission and educational priorities requires a thorough and thoughtful process. From the outset we were clear about the qualities of the teachers we were hoping to attract. First and foremost, we set out to attract educators that would promote academic excellence and provide an exceptional classroom experience for our students. In addition, we want to make sure that every teacher we hire is a “kid magnet.” The best teachers understand that they are always role models and that establishing healthy and meaningful relationships with their students is essential. The best teachers also understand that their responsibilities transcend the classroom and extend to the playground, the arts studio, the stage and the athletic field. They embrace opportunities to be involved in the life of our school and the lives of their students. You will find them at all school events and functions because they know that their attendance and support makes a difference in the lives of the young people they serve. Finally, we purposefully seek educators who are innovators and who will embrace change. As we begin to explore the future of education in the information age, we see immense challenges but even greater opportunities. As a faculty, we want to take full advantage of the exciting new learning opportunities that are available to our students via their connection to a world without walls and access to information that literally has no limits. This new reality has dramatic and far-reaching implications for teaching and learning. Over the next several years, we will be investing our professional time and resources to develop new and transformative ways to connect with our students and capitalize on the exciting new opportunities for research, collaboration, and learning that the technology age presents. As the creative work of reimagining the classroom of the future begins, we want to add diverse, talented educators from around the planet. We want to attract teachers who will make an immediate impact on our academic program and strengthen a faculty culture that embraces and celebrates change and innovation. These are exciting times at The Out-of-Door Academy. The 2011-12 school year was certainly a year to remember in the history of our school. We opened the doors with the largest enrollment ever in August of 2011 and in June we celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2012 whose many talents were recognized by colleges and universities across the nation in the form of over $7 million dollars in merit based scholarships, an all-time high for Out-of-Door. Our admissions office also set new high water marks for tours and applications. Thanks to the inspiring efforts of the entire ODA family, our school is thriving at a time when many non-profits find themselves simply struggling to survive. Our could argue, however, that Out-of-Door’s success both today, and throughout its storied existence, is grounded in the strong partnership that exists between families who believe that education is the key to their child’s future and a faculty and staff that is dedicated to making a difference in the life of every student they teach. For all of the right reasons, we will continue to do everything in our power to bring the best, and the brightest, educators to our school. A Letter from the Chairman of the Board

he 2011-2012 school year was another impressive chapter in the life of The Out-of-Door Academy. Our school year started with record enrollment and tremendous growth was seen in each core discipline: academics, arts and athletics. On the Siesta Key Campus, three major events occurred. First, our new Pavilion was opened thanks to the generosity of the Dart family. Our students, families and faculty will utilize this beautiful facility for years to come. Second, our faculty completed the final piloting for the Renzulli Enrichment Program, which will be fully adopted starting this fall. Lastly, the 6th grade migration to the Uihlein campus will enable Out-of-Door to offer a comprehensive Middle School experience for our students and their families.

On the Uihlein Campus, preparations were made for the 6th grade migration. Other exciting news for our middle school students is the addition of Mandarin and Latin for all 6th grade students. WODA, the traditional 6th grade program, will be enhanced and expanded to focus more on 21st century communication skills. Another very notable happening was Brittany Wenger (Class of 2013) winning the grand prize at the Google Science Fair. Our senior class achieved 100% college matriculation and were the recipients of a school record $7 million dollars in unsolicited scholarships! Out-of-Door athletics enjoyed many accomplishments across various sports and at the district and regional levels. We were also dazzled by all the stellar performances of our theater and music departments. The above highlights clearly demonstrate Out-of-Door Academyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission statement: As an independent college preparatory school, we provide an environment in which students strive to achieve their highest academic goals and to build character through a balanced program of academics, the arts and athletics. As the Out-of-Door family continues to grow, your commitment and generosity has been truly remarkable. The Annual Fund set another record with total contributions of $615,000. As you know, tuition only covers about 90% of the cost of educating our children. The remainder has to be made up through contributions. Our yearly fundraiser, the Banyan Ball, once again complemented the Annual Fund nicely, with excellent participation and resources. Our Parent Association also continued to grow. As soon as you commit to sending your child to ODA, you become a member of the parent association. Many events, including artistic performances, sporting events, Thunder Fun Day, Turkey Bowl, and so many more would not be possible without the countless volunteer hours from our parents. By volunteering, you not only enrich our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives, but you also make our community stronger, and I thank you. In closing, your commitment, both in time and resources, has allowed our school to flourish this past year. FCIS Board President David V. Mahler has been elected as the President of the Board of Directors for the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS). Founded in 1954, the Tampa-based FCIS “sets high standards for quality elementary and secondary non-public education,” assuring those standards throughout the accreditation process. When elected to the Board of Directors, Skardon C. Bliss, council Executive Director at the time said, “We are very happy to have him (on the Board). We will use his talents in multiple ways.” Charley Zimmer, retired Head of School of Episcopal High School of Jacksonville said his team’s members got to “see David in action” and were impressed by what they saw. “To my way of thinking, he is the consummate school man” said Zimmer, who now works in Episcopal’s advancement office. “He loves kids, he’s sensitive to their needs and he’s full of integrity.” Headmaster of Trinity Preparatory school, Craig Maughan, works closely with David. “David Mahler has been an active member of the FCIS Board of Directors for several years. He served as the first Chair of the Accreditation Commission and is largely responsible for setting in place procedures for the consistent review and processing of accreditation reports. In November, 2011 he was elected the Vice-President of FCIS with the expectation that he would serve in this office for 3 years before moving to the office of President. Due to the tragic death of President Dale Regan, former Head of Episcopal School of Jacksonville, David was asked to assume the Presidency in the spring of 2012. He did an outstanding job at a very challenging time for the Association. His leadership was significant in the establishment of the Dale Regan Leadership Fund that will focus on three programs: Prospective Heads Institute, New Heads Institute, and Experienced Heads Institute. David coordinated the solicitation of funds and provided a compassionate guiding hand at a time when all FCIS Schools were in mourning. In September, the FCIS Board of Directors will begin the process of developing a new Strategic Plan. David has been instrumental in this planning and as President, will play an important role in shaping and directing the future of FCIS.”

David received his BA in history from Wesleyan University and his M.Ed in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia. He has been a teacher, coach and administrator in both boarding and day school settings for his entire career. Prior to his appointment as the Head at Out-of-Door, David was the Academic Dean at the Collegiate School in Richmond, VA. He also served as the Director of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools New Teacher Institute and founded and led the JRPO Academic Deans Benchmarking Group, bringing independent school leaders from across the country together to analyze academic performance data and address curriculum issues, program development and organizational change. In 2007 David was elected to the Florida Council of Independent Schools Board of Directors. In 2008 he was appointed Chair of the Accreditation Commission for all Florida Independent Schools and in 2010 he became Secretary for the FCIS Board.

Board of Trustees 2012-2013 New Trustees Lisa Grain Lisa Grain, DDS, MS is a retired orthodontist who lives in Sarasota, Florida with her husband, David, and their son, David, Jr, a Junior at The Out- of- Door Academy. Their daughter, Chelsea, just graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA and attends Duke University. Lisa did her undergraduate work at The University of Virginia, her graduate work at Howard University College of Dentistry, and her postgraduate work in orthodontics at The Ohio State University. Lisa had two private practices, one in New York City and the other in Summit, New Jersey. She taught at Columbia University and was an attending at several hospitals in New York for many years, before retiring to Florida. While living in New Jersey, Lisa was on the board of Marylawn of the Oranges Academy where she focused on developing a Women of Power speaking series, for the all girls prep school, in which professional women with varied expertise would lecture and mentor the girls. At that time, her daughter attended Kent Place School in Summit, NJ. While David was on the board of Kent Place, Lisa was Chairman of the Annual Fund. When her family moved to West Newton, MA, both children attended The Chestnut Hill School. Once again, both Lisa and David were very active members of the school. Lisa was on the board of The Chestnut Hill School, until the Grains made their final move to Sarasota. Lisa and David continued to pursue their passion in education when they moved to Florida. They quickly discovered that there was a great need at Booker High School. They started the Grain Fellows Program in 2004, which gave multiple need students a dream, a chance, and the tools necessary to go to college. Since its inception, Grain Fellows have been accepted to Dartmouth College, Smith College, Brown University, Middlebury College, Vanderbilt University, University of Florida, and Miami University to name a few. There are now Grain Fellows in dental school, medical school, and graduate schools throughout the country. Education and the kids at Booker High school remain Lisa and David’s Sarasota passion.

Larry Thompson Dr. Larry R. Thompson is currently serving his 13th year as president of Ringling College of Art and Design. An energetic, innovative, and visionary community leader, Dr. Thompson is on a mission to transform arts and design higher education and to infuse business with creativity. He is passionate about shattering the myth of the starving artist! During his tenure as president of Ringling College, he has worked tirelessly to infuse his spirit of inclusion throughout the institution by celebrating diversity, encouraging freedom of expression, supporting new ways of teaching and learning, and taking risks to innovate and enhance the overall academic experience. Aside from his “full-time” job, Larry is involved in myriad volunteer endeavors. He is president for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) and is Secretary of the President’s Council of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF.) Locally, he is President of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County and is a board member of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, the Community Health Corporation for Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota Season of Sculpture, Science and Environment Council of Sarasota County (SEC), and YEA Arts!, as well as the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County Partners Council. He serves on the Advisory Board for the Circle of Community Partnership. Larry Thompson is a lawyer and an educator. He received his Juris Doctorate summa cum laude from The Ohio State University and practiced law for a number of years with a large firm in Columbus. He has a Master of Science in educational administration and counseling from California State University Los Angeles. He was an adjunct professor in the Honors department at the University of Michigan-Flint and taught as an adjunct professor in the College of Law at Ohio State for six years. Thompson has received, many honors and awards, including: In 2007, he received the Civic Achievement Award by the West Coast Florida Chapter of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), and the Arts Leadership Award from the Sarasota County Arts Council, and was one of three finalists in Tampa Bay CEO magazine’ s “Tampa Bay CEO of the Year.” In 2008, Creative Tampa Bay named him a “Creative Catalyst,” and The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida honored him with the Stephen H. Goldman, M.D., Keystone Award. In 2010 he was inducted into the Community Video Archives and received The Schoenbaum Humanitarian Award from the Salvation Army. Thompson was recognized as Arts Administrator of the Year for 1998 by Arts Management News for exemplary and distinguished work in the field of arts administration. He is a recipient of the Friend of Education award by Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for outstanding endeavors in support of education and the National Association of College and University Attorneys Fellow award for exemplary service on behalf of college and university clients.

Board of Trustees 2012-2013 Terri Vitale Terri Vitale is a graduate of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School and attended Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy throughout high school. She was named a High School Academic All American and attended the University of Notre Dame on a full athletic scholarship (tennis). Terri earned her Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA) with the Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame (magna cum laude) with a major in Marketing. She went on to earn her Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Notre Dame summa cum laude; ranking second in the class. Terri worked at the world headquarters of the Leo Burnett Company in Chicago, Illinois for four years where she worked on Reebok, Coca-Cola, Nature Made Vitamins and Northwestern Memorial Hospital accounts. She moved to Gainesville, Florida after marrying Chris Sforzo, MD for him to complete his residency and fellowship training at the University of Florida in the Department of Orthopaedics. She then served as Assistant Director of Public Relations and Corporate Development for Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida and the Children’s Miracle Network. Terri moved to Lakewood Ranch, FL in 2004 and began working in sports marketing for Tandem Enterprises and for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Terri currently serves on the Board of Directors for the University of Notre Dame Monogram Board (Athletics); the Community Foundation of Sarasota County; All Star Children’s Foundation and is a past member of the Board of Directors for Forty Carrots Family Center. Terri and Chris have two children at Out-of-Door, Ryan, a 3rd grader, and Sydney, a 5th grader.

Faculty Professional Development The Out-of-Door Academy fosters a learning environment not only for our students, but also for our faculty and staff. Professional development encompasses all types of facilitated learning opportunities, ranging from college degrees to formal coursework, conferences and informal learning opportunities situated in practice. Whether to foster an interest in lifelong learning, to maintain and improve professional competence, to enhance career progression, or to keep abreast of new technology and practice, faculty members take advantage of learning opportunities every day. Here are some examples from this past year: Kelly Rose, 2nd Grade, will graduate in December 2012 with a doctorate in Instructional Leadership and a minor in Brain-based Leadership. Her disseratation is on the definition of bullying. She is collecting results and writing chapters four and five this summer. Parents, teachers, and administrators were a part of the study. Next semester, she will take the last three classes and get her dissertation approved. Kelly recently participated in an article called Training the Mind’s Eye for Reading Teacher magazine. Dr. Donna Wilson, the author, is the cofounder and president of BrainSMART. Kelly helped her with the article by providing an example using her strategy. They have since met many times and chat often over email and phone about future projects. After graduation, she hopes to be teaching for BrainSMART. The Rose family moved in the summer of 2012 due to her husband relocating for work, and she will be deeply missed at Out-of-Door. Ken Sommers, MS/US History, spent a week during the summer of 2011 at the Gilder Lehrman Institute Global Cold War Seminar at Cambridge University in England. The seminar addressed Ken’s academic passion for the conflict, and featured a Russian speaker who spent over two years in the former Soviet Union. Over the course of an intensive week, Ken and his colleagues (teachers from around the world) heard lectures from pre-eminent Cold War researchers exploring the various Cold War battlefields across the globe and the implications the period has on the world today. Martha Gulácsy, 5th Grade, English Department Head, attended the 84th annual ERB conference in New York City last October. The annual conference was a great opportunity for people from around the world to get together to share, learn, and meet some amazing colleagues. The theme was “the academic journey,” which educators know is one that never truly ends. The tools used to guide educators are constantly evolving and changing. The conference featured hands-on, real-life application of tools, solutions, and information to help with individual and collective journeys through our academic worlds. The participants experienced the power of effective networking and collaboration, learned about innovative ways to enhance the classroom experience for our students, and were involved in tactical discussions to implement new ideas and technologies in schools. In November 2011, Martha Gulácsy taught “An Introduction to the Writer’s Workshop “ at the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) Conference in Weston, Florida, to a standing-room only crowd of elementary teachers. As Lucy Calkins says, “we are teaching writers, not writing.” Margarita Dooley and Yadira Gomez Kirschner, US/MS Spanish, attended the 2012 Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) in April in Baltimore, Maryland. The event focused on the teaching of language and culture through innovative approaches in order to engage students with interactive online resources and further stimulate learning. NECTFL is the oldest (since 1954) multi-language association of pre-kindergarten through university teachers (continued)

in the country. Margarita Dooley and Yadira Gomez Kirschner discussed how technology has enhanced the language and cultural learning experience for today’s students. Michael Salmon, Associate Director of College Counseling, attended the National Association of College Admission Counseling Conference in New Orleans. He was a presenter at the Southern Association of College Admission Counseling Conference in Arlington, VA with the topic “Managing Expectations: The Value of a Case Studies Program.” He is also the co-founder/creator of the Tampa Bay Case Studies Program. Linda Vasilaki, Music/Art Department Head, participated in some great music education seminars and workshops, including a drumming workshop called Get Groovin’ at Partin Settlement School in Kissimmee, FL. She studied under clinicians Nate Strawbridge and Zadda Bazzy and learned drumming techniques, improvisation and games, drum circle facilitation and ensemble pieces for students of all ages. In February, she attended a Florida Elementary Music Educators’ Conference at Bashaw Elementary School under clinician Shelby Fullerton, professor of music at USF. This workshop focused on how to reinforce math and reading through music concepts. In August, she attended a workshop with music educators around the state as they focus on strategies to how to “Teach Music Smarter”. For each of these, she earns credit toward re-certification and helps her stays current with best practices. She will also present music curriculum strategies, along with other music educators, at the statewide Music Educators’ Convention in January 2013. NoËl Dougherty, Upper School Head, attended the Stanley King Institute in the summer of 2011 in Colorado Springs, CO along with Shelley Stone. It was a wonderful professional experience devoted to counseling and counseling practices. They also attended a day seminar in Tampa on “Mean Girl Behavior” in schools. Patrick Miller, LS/US Music, was invited last December to be a guest conductor as a part of the University of Georgia Midfest. This three-day event invited approximately 1,000 middle school students from all around Georgia to participate in one of eight honor bands. He worked with 135 students for a total of 8 hours of rehearsals, performing a concert on the final afternoon. He was one of eight conductors brought in from all over the Eastern United States to participate. Last December he also took part in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music University Bands 21st Annual Middle School Band Festival. Audrey Gaffney, Math Department Head, attended the Advanced Placement Calculus Reading in Kansas City last June where she was a reader for the AP BC Calculus Exam where they read for 7 days/ 8 hours per day.

Nicole Porrello, LS/MS/US Music, attended the 14th annual Musikgarten Teacher Festival in April in Green Lake, Wisconsin. Teachers participated in three days of music-making and seminars, covering topics from group piano teaching techniques, to helping parents understand the importance of aural methods in music education. During the Festival, a select number of teachers were recognized for their outstanding dedication to continuing education. Nicole was awarded the 2012 Musikgarten Achievement Award. This award signifies that she attained certification in all Musikgarten levels for children ages birth to 9. Nicole is one of only sixteen teachers in North America to receive this prestigious award for 2012. She will be teaching a class through The Out-of-Door Academy’s Prime Time program beginning Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. The class is for babies through toddlers on the Uihlein campus. Jeff Horr, LS Physical Education, attended Southern District/ Florida Convention for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in Orlando in February 2012. Brett Timmons, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, interned with the Miami Dolphins this summer assisting the coaching staff. He will be attending staff meetings, learning how an NFL team operates and functions. In March, Coach Timmons also attended the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic in Orlando. The clinic allowed him to network and learn from a series of college football and high school coaches. It also helps Out-of-Door’s athletic program stay in front of the curve as far as new advancements in football are concerned. Monica Baldwin, Director of Financial Assistance, attended the SSS Leadership Forum in San Francisco (School & Student Services by NAIS) last June. Heads, Trustees, Business Officers, and Financial Aid & Admission Directors from across the country gathered to discuss financial aid strategies that support overall school mission and vision and meet enrollment and policy goals. She also attended the SAIS Spring Forum in Tampa this past March where colleagues discussed enrollment, demographic and financial aid trends and strategies. After attending this forum, she was approached by the National Outreach Director for SSS of NAIS requesting a professional referral of their financial aid software system. Christiane Zablit-Lorts, MS/US World Languages, will be attending the Advanced Placement (AP) annual conference in Orlando this summer. The AP Annual Conference is the largest professional development gathering of the AP Program community. This year’s conference will engage, inspire and promote innovation in our schools.

Traditions: Faculty Members An Interview with Jim Kennon Upper School teacher Jim Kennon retired at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. Jim was a favorite among students, parents, and faculty during his tenure at Out-of-Door. He taught physics, math, engineering, and issues in contemporary society. He was also been a part of student council, was head softball coach for six years, and assisted coaching track and cross country for five years. ODA: What brought you to Out-of-Door? JK: I had been teaching for 5 years at Genesis Prep School in New Port Richey. I was looking for a larger, better school for my kids. My wife, Kelly, has a sister who lives in Sarasota. We looked into independent schools and found ODA. I interviewed and got the job. ODA: What are your favorite memories of your time here, and what are you going to miss the most? JK: The kids - without a doubt. ODA: If there is one legacy you would like to leave behind, what do you hope it to be? JK: Several things - first of all, teachers need to genuinely care about the overall success of the kids - not just in their own class. If teachers are here for any other reason than that, they should find something else to do. Students also need to learn how to think, not just memorize. Their level of success in college and life will depend much more on their ability to critically analyze situations and arrive at solutions rather than just regurgitate memorized - and often not understood - information. We as teachers should reward kids for thinking and understanding - not for memorizing. Kids need to be independent thinkers - they should not adopt ideas or take action solely on the input from others - no matter how prestigious or knowledgeable. We need to help our students realize that they are more capable in this area than any other source. ODA: Describe your career before becoming a teacher. JK: I received my Engineering Degree from Case Western Reserve University. My major field was Fluid and Thermal Sciences, and my minor was Business Management. I worked for a defense contractor on Mark 48 Mod 1 Acoustic Homing Torpedo, and obtained a secret government security clearance. I was responsible for production of and Weapons Specifications testing for several sub-assemblies, and worked closely with the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington, D.C. I worked in the industry for 17 years as a Project Engineer, Engineering Manager, and Division General Manager for the same company. Our division was the most profitable in the company. I developed a $25 million bid package for robotics installation at Ford Plant, and negotiated a $20 million joint venture with a Swiss company.

While working in the industry, I traveled extensively. I went to Europe every other month, Japan twice a year, and all over the U.S. Every 4-5 years, I would do a 6-week trip to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1981, I attended law school, and was admitted to Mensa in 1983. I authored a technical paper called “Ignition Hazards in Electrostatic Painting” that was published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE.) I also served as member of the Board of Directors and Vice-President of a national museum in the early 1980’s. I semi-retired in 1990 and moved to Florida. I stayed home with my wife and raised our kids until they started at an independent school in New Port Richey before we started at Out-of-Door. During this time, I was the Lead Trainer for AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly program in Pasco County. In my personal life, I played and coached softball for over 35 years. I started running half-marathons at age 59, and have entered in four races since then, as well as the 200 mile Florida Keys Ragnar relay. I scuba dived the Great Barrier Reef on my Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti vacation. I also found time to hike Mt.Fuji. ODA: So what are these patents everyone keeps talking about? JK: While working in industry, I received seven U.S Patents:

PAM DAVIS: 35 Years at ODA Pam Davis has taught at the Lower School at The Out-of-Door Academy for 35 years. In the 2012-2013 school year, Pam moved to the Uihlein Campus at Lakewood Ranch along with the sixth grade. ODA: What brought you to Out-of-Door? PD: I worked at a bank on Siesta Key after graduating with my education degree. There was this cute little school I visited a few times, and I was hired as the third grade teacher. ODA: What are the different roles you have had while here? PD: I taught third grade for my first four years. At that same time, I was also a bus driver picking up and delivering kids door to door on St. Armands and Longboat Key. For a season, I drove the boys basketball team and coaches to their games, because you had to have a chauffeur’s license. Next, I taught fifth grade for a year, followed by fourth grade for about eight years, while helping develop a strong curriculum. After that, I was asked to design and implement a science program for grades 3, 4, 5. The last few years, I have been teaching science to grades 5 and 6, which I have loved. Some other responsibilities I’ve held have been department chair, team leader, task force leader, starting a retirement program with Mrs. Huene and Mr. Young, teaching summer camp, helping teachers obtain their certification, and curriculum development and integration. ODA: You have seen a lot of evolution in the school – what are some of the major things that you have seen make a difference at the school? PD: The curriculum strength and standards have improved dramatically over the years. It is strong, and allows a multitude of opportunities for the kids to develop their strengths and ideas. The faculty constantly works on improving the curriculum, and the school is very supportive. Facilities have also made a big change, along with enrollment, which was about 112 in Pre-K-8th grade when I started. ODA: What are you going to miss most about the Siesta Key Campus? What are you excited for at the Uihlein Campus? I will miss teaching fifth grade science and the people on this campus. I will also miss hearing the boats going by in Big Pass, seeing the water as I come and go, the feel of Siesta Key in itself, the serene, ambience of the Siesta Key campus and the laughter from the kids while they play and work. Teaching middle school will present new personal challenges and opportunities. I am looking forward to working with the middle school team and hope to be able to add a dimension to help make the program even better. This move will be like a completely new job with the different location, colleagues, environment and energy.

Highlights from the 2011-2012 e-Banyans Convocation Convocation was a great day of fun and excitement as The Out-of-Door Academy honored its seniors with special recognition. This school tradition has become a favorite of students, parents and faculty with yearly events such as the seniors and kindergarten buddies processional, gifts from each of the classes to the senior class, and the ringing of the bell by seniors and their kindergarten buddies. A new tradition was started this year with a leather-bound honor code book for the seniors, with a Class of 2012 page signed by the entire class. This book will remain at the school indefinitely, with each proceeding senior class receiving a page to sign in commemoration of their graduation year.

Homecoming The Out-of-Door Academy experienced a record-breaking attendance for Homecoming in October. Over 1,000 members of the Out-of-Door community, most dressed in white in support of our “white out”, came out to Thunder Stadium to enjoy great food, fun and games for the kids at the All-School Picnic, and to cheer on the Thunder. The Family Picnic featured an inflatable bounce house and giant slide, hearty meals from LeeRoy Selmon’s and The Guerilla Chef, a Middle School bake sale, the Thor Store, and more. Thanks to PNC Wealth Management’s sponsorship underwriting, The Out-of-Door Academy provided nearly 800 meals to students, family and alumni. The Homecoming Court was honored in the middle of the field at halftime.

Theatre Performance: “The Crucible” The Out-of-Door Academy Theatre Arts Department performed The Crucible, by American playwright Arthur Miller. The story of The Crucible is set in the Puritan New England town of Salem, Massachusetts. The play is a dramatization of the Salem witch trials from the late 1600s. A classic tale of affairs, accusations, and trials, this was a performance not to be missed. The performance was directed by L’Tanya Evans, with Technical Director Katie Dobosz ‘06.

Lower School Athletic Pavilion The Lower School Athletic Pavilion was completed on October 31, 2011! This permanent, covered structure features 5,000 square feet of covered athletic space, a regulation-sized basketball court, 2 regulation-sized volleyball courts, fans, lights, and more. Thank you very much to the Dart Family for your generous donation of this wonderful facility. It will be enjoyed by countless students for many years to come (more on page 48.)

Thunder Fun Day Thunder Fun Day, The Out-of-Door Academy’s annual all-school fun festival, was a great success. Featuring a rock climbing wall, video game truck, dozens of skill games, a chili cookoff, and more, this event is a favorite of Out-of-Door students, parents, and faculty. Thank you so much to the Parent Association, all of the volunteers, and all of our guests for making this year’s Thunder Fun Day outstanding! The event raised over $18,000 for the school.

Fall Athletics Fall sports at The Out-of-Door Academy were, once again, exciting and eventful. Every team and player had a chance to grow. Out-of-Door’s varsity football season was a good learning experience for everyone involved. The team looks forward to having a great year in 2012. The Out-of-Door Academy varsity volleyball team played well, and only graduate two seniors from the Class of 2012. As such, they will have the main core of players returning for next year. Both golf and swimming had good seasons. The swimmers were coached by Mike Salmon, and broke many of the school’s previous swim records. One of Out-of-Door’s most successful athletes this fall season was Cross Country runner, Peter Runge ‘14. He advanced all the way to the Class 1A State Cross Country Meet, and finished 30th out of 179 runners with the time of 17:18. Our junior varsity and middle school sports programs continue to be great “feeders” for our varsity sports. This year, there were two middle school and one junior varsity volleyball teams. The junior varsity football team had the largest turn out of boys it has ever had. It passed the forty-player mark, which is the first time that has happened in Out-of-Door football history. While no champions were crowned during the fall 2011 Out-of-Door season, there is much optimism going into next fall. Go Thunder!

Outstanding Academic Achievement Brittany Wenger ‘13 Wins Google International Science Fair

rittany Wenger learned about artificial intelligence during a seventhgrade school project. She was immediately enthralled, bought a book on programming and taught herself how to code. Now 17, Wenger won the grand prize at the second annual Google Science Fair on Monday for her project on improving breast cancer diagnosis accuracy using artificial neural networks. That combination of drive, passion for science and a desire to do something good was common at this year’s event. Organizers of the online science fair received thousands of entries from 100 countries, including India, Ukraine, Malta and Swaziland. Google picked 15 finalists and, at a final gala in an airplane hangar in Palo Alto, announced the winners in three age categories, along with a grand-prize winner. Before the winners were announced, the finalists presented their projects one last time on the Google campus Monday afternoon. Groups of young kids from summer camps filed through to meet the young scientists and watch their demonstrations. Some Google employees even brought their children to work for the day just to see the event. The contest was free to enter and open to all students around the world between 13 and 18 years of age. Google collected entries from January to April and announced the finalists in May. The grand prize winner receives a $50,000 scholarship, an internship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. For Wenger, one of the highlights of the experience was meeting famed computer scientist Vint Cerf, who talked with her at length about computer science and neural networks. For her winning project, Wenger wrote a program that improves diagnoses of malignant breast tumors by using a large amount of data stored online and looking for patterns. It’s an ambitious project that was made possible by that first spark of interest in programming five years ago “I decided that it was what I was going to do,” said the Florida native. “I’m very persistent, and I learned to code, and I started coding neural networks that played soccer -- I’m an avid soccer player as well.” - via CNN

From the College Counseling Office The Out-of-Door Academy’s Advocacy Program | Joe Runge, Director of College Counseling

or most of us, applying to our alma matter today with our previous high school achievement would prove to be an exercise in futility. The vast majority of us would get the “small” envelope in the mail indicating “our accomplishments were voluminous and impressive” but in the end, just not competitive enough to gain admission. The college admissions process is hyper competitive, maddening, rewarding, frustrating, and euphoric all at the same time. In lieu of The Out-of-Door Academy’s five-year developmental college counseling program, I want to introduce one aspect

of the process that necessitates deeper interpretation. This part of the process is referred to as “Strong Advocacy”. Simply stated, Strong Advocacy implies advocating for admission on behalf of our student constituency beyond the paper application and what the subjective and objective data reveals to an undergraduate admissions committee. As a former associate director of admission at Villanova University, I often reveled in the opportunity to read application files of those who I had recruited throughout the

United States. It was an excellent opportunity to match a “face with a file”. Unfortunately, my responsibility as an admissions counselor was to read over 1,400 applications, 700 “second” reads, and sit in on too many committee meetings (for those applicants who presented borderline files for admission) to recall…all in a six week period. With each file taking up to an hour for an initial review (and reviewing, on average, 30 pages of documentation for each file), it did not take long before all applicants began to look consistently similar…same essay topics, same activities, similar standardized test scores, same types of recommendations, and similar academic curriculums and grade achievement. I always believed the process to be overwhelming (applications to read verse number of available admissions counselors) and wondered what real service we were providing to applicants whose future we literally held in our collective hands? At best, it was an awesome responsibility and at worst, it could be an arbitrary decision based on non-academic variables (athletes, development cases, and alumni affiliation). I did not feel whole about what were we doing and promised myself if I were to ever work on the “other side of the desk” in college counseling, I would attempt to highlight the “human element” for each student in my charge. Adding the human context is invaluable in the admissions process. It allows me to defend, promote, and/or advocate for a student who otherwise would not have had additional support beyond the objective numerical data. I once had an esteemed Ivy League Director of Admissions say to me, “Joe, it is so competitive at my school that I could literally send out denial letters to all the freshmen I just admitted, and replace them with candidates from our denial pile and you could not find any significant difference.” As I maneuvered into college counseling from college admissions work, I determined one of my priorities would be to take one step beyond my final responsibility of mailing the application for admission. I would have my seniors apply early enough in the application cycle (often four months before traditional college admission deadlines), so I could travel to colleges and advocate in person. I believe two crucial actions take place during the strong advocacy process. First, it affords me an opportunity to sit down with the dean of admission and discuss my borderline students.

It allows me to articulate what each student’s strengths are beyond the application and the standard questions asked and answered. I am able to discuss a wide variety of issues I feel are important but often never captured within tradition application protocol. For example, some students have to overcome hardships or hurdles in life, others may have learning disabilities that need greater clarification, and still others may present as great kids in the middle of the class that are often over-looked in admissions, but are worthy and high character students who are just beginning to mature and find their academic stride. Second, the admissions climate changes dramatically from one year to the next, so the strong advocacy program allows me to get a clear vision of how competitive each given year may be in terms of admissions penetration. This benefits our students and parents as I return from my trips to inform them they may need to apply to another college for security purposes, or because I have uncovered a new college with opportunities that might be perfect for several of our students. Applying early has inordinate advantages when combined with the strong advocacy program. Ultimately, adding the human context is invaluable in the admissions process. It allows me to defend, promote, and/ or advocate for a student who otherwise would not have had additional support beyond the objective numerical data. College deans appreciate the effort and understand I am not over selling a candidate, but am just adding the rich textual flavor that often is unnoticed during the high volume review process. It doesn’t work for every student at every college, but it works enough that I believe it is worthwhile to make this investment in supporting The Out-of-Door Academy student body. -Joe Runge, Director of College Counseling

Each Wireless AP can allow up to 50 users and each user depending on signal strength can connect up to a rate of 300Mbps. Purchased and installed 5 new surveillance systems for the buses. Installed a new surveillance system for the Thunder Stadium concession and grandstand. Upgraded hard drive and software for the Ipitomy VOIP Phone Systems. Purchased and installed a new professional sound system was installed at both Taylor Emmons Field and Thunder Stadium. A new 12-Channel Lapel Wireless Microphone system has been installed in the Black Box Theater. We installed a new surveillance system on the Siesta Key Campus. Added two new televisions with NeoCast technology at the Uihlein Campus, providing Athletic, Admissions, Student Council, and other school-related information for students, parents, and visitors. This July, a new Professional Sound System and Video Projection System was installed in the Petrik Thunderdome.

In French classes, iPads have been used to record and film students as they prepared a French menu and filmed a commercial to invite people into their restaurant. In Spanish classes, students present speaking projects using an iPad, either talking about themselves or engaging in a conversation. New Elective Offering Mandarin Chinese

ut-of-Door is excited to announce the offering of a Mandarin Chinese elective in the Middle and Upper School, beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. Our new Mandarin Chinese Teacher, Shumin Yu (pictured to the right), came to America four years ago and married her husband who is from Sarasota. She decided to teach Chinese rather than English upon arrival in America, and comes to Out-of-Door from Pine View School. Shumin is excited to start the Mandarin Chinese program at Out-of-Door. She enjoys teaching students who are eager to learn, and watching them grasp the language to begin communicating in Mandarin Chinese with her. The course will not only expose students to the language, but also the many cultures that exist in China. “The Chinese population is the largest in the world. The language has a nearly 5,000 year history. There is a lot to learn - I learn more every time I visit different parts of China. There is different food, different culture. China is home to 56 nationalities with their own traditions and culture,” Shumin noted. “I think kids will have a lot of fun in the class, but it is also something very important to learn for the global economy we live in. There are many opportunities opened for students who learn to speak Mandarin; to go to China and be able to do business.”

In an effort to bring a nonwestern language and culture to our community, we are excited to offer Mandarin Chinese to our students in the fall. Students are excited about the new offering. Shumin says students who may be nervous about taking her class do not need to feel anxious. “Chinese characters and pronunciation may seem hard, but everything builds upon itself. I will try my best to make my classes fun and exciting for the children. I plan to introduce them to culture first, then start with the language, little by little. I teach a combination of traditional language, culture, art, games, calligraphy, songs, and more. I will teach them how to order in a Chinese restaurant. It’s really fun for the kids.”

Welcome to Middle School at The Out-of-Door Academy

Sixth grade moves to the Uihlein Campus for the 2012-2013 school year and beyond

he Middle School at The Out-of-Door Academy is now fully separate from the Upper School. Previously a 7th and 8th Grade only program, the Middle School has expanded to include 6th Grade, moving 6th Grade students from the Siesta Key Campus to the Uihlein Campus at Lakewood Ranch for the 2012-2013 school year and beyond. The Out-of-Door Academy is excited to introduce a new entrance to the Middle School (pictured above), located behind the Petrik Thunderdome. The new entrance signifies the new separation of the Middle School from the Upper School. Three teachers from the Siesta Key Campus (Pam Davis, Michele Corley, and Debbie Waterman) have moved to the Uihlein Campus to continue teaching 6th Graders at The Out-of-Door Academy. In addition, six new Middle School teachers have been brought into the Out-of-Door family to accommodate our record enrollment of 650 for the 2012-2013 school year. Head of Middle School, Bruce Latta noted on the first day of school, “I’m excited about the year. We have done a lot of work on the program - and we have much more to do - but we also must remember that the magic at Out-of-Door is the community, which shined throughout the day. It was great to see teachers and students happy to see each other and eager to start the school year.”

Letter from the Associate Head of School for Advancement

s I reflect on the 2011-2012 school year, I am drawn to two dramatic moments that I witnessed within larger events that captured the essence of Out-of-Door. On Halloween, we conducted the Ribbon Cutting ceremony of the Lower School Dart Pavilion. Mr. Mahler, dressed as Thor, welcomed the guests to our covered court area which was something envisioned since Coach Mike Young’s first days 30 years ago when he arrived on campus as the Lower School PE Coach. Thanks to a generous gift from the Dart Family, his dream became a reality. As Coach Young instructed all of the Lower School students to throw their commemorative basketballs in the air for the first time on the new court, I zeroed in on Coach Young (pictured left.) You could not wipe the smile off of his face as he observed the pure joy of each student celebrating this new facility together. It is a moment we will not soon forget. The second moment occurred during the celebration of the generous gift from the Dietrich Family, to construct the baseball Concession Stand/Locker Room and Scorer’s Booth for the Taylor Emmons Field. One of the most touching moments I had the pleasure to observe was when the Emmons family saw, for the first time, the locker that is dedicated to Taylor, ’09 by the Dietrich family. His #15 jersey (pictured below) will be permanently housed there watching over each Thunder Baseball team for years to come. This incredibly thoughtful gesture from one family to another and the outpouring of emotion was overwhelming. These are the type of moments that make this job rewarding. To have the opportunity to partner with you both in the generosity of your volunteer time and through your philanthropic giving is my privilege each and every year. Due to your generosity, Out-of-Door was able to raise over $2.5 million dollars though the Annual Fund, Banyan Ball, and restricted giving and gifts related to our campaign; an alltime record. Our efforts were led by many volunteers who gave countless hours of their time to ensure a successful year in fundraising for Out-of-Door. The Advancement Committee, once again led by Tally Harris, provided the support in all of our philanthropic efforts. The Annual Fund co-chairs, Mickey Davis, Linda Ross and Linda Ruschau, set an all-time mark by raising more than $615,000. This year’s Banyan Ball co-chairs, Tracee Bomberger and Michelle Lea, transformed the field at Thunder Stadium into “The Emerald Isle – A Claddagh Affair of Friendship, Love and Loyalty” on St. Patrick’s Day while raising $350,000 for the students at Out-of-Door. We also thank our Arts Guild chair Suzanne Munroe; our Thunder Athletic Club president Chris Hill and the Thunder Athletic Club for a record-setting year of fundraising for athletics. We are indebted to all of these volunteers and their wonderful committees for their service to the school. Finally, I would like to thank the Advancement Team – Julie Fineberg, Lauren Hersh, Shannon Drosky and Nicole Apostle, for their hard work behind the scenes to ensure a successful year in Advancement. This team has galvanized themselves into a well-oiled machine, while working tirelessly in their efforts to advance the mission of Out-of-Door. We are grateful for all that you do for the school. In conclusion, I want to thank each and every one of you who are listed in this report. Your commitment to make Out-of-Door a special place for all of our students provides me with touching moments each and every day in my interactions with you. Thank you to the many generous Annual Fund donors who helped The Out-ofDoor Academy reach a RECORD-BREAKING ANNUAL FUND raising over 100% Board of Trustees $615,000 in 2011-2012. The Out-of-Door Academy’s Annual Fund strengthens 100% Faculty an d Staff and sustains the extraordinary program that defines an Out-of-Door education. 80% Current Pa Each year, the school relies on contributions to provide critical support to our rents operating budget above and beyond tuition. These gifts have an immediate and direct benefit to each student and faculty member, as well as to the quality and range of all school programs. The Annual Fund is the single most important way that you can give to the school. Every year the Annual Fund makes transformational Out-of-Door moments possible for our students. Hundreds of loyal Out-of-Door parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, alumni, and friends contribute to the Annual Fund each year, helping meet the school’s ongoing need for flexible, unrestricted income to support our academic mission. As unrestricted gifts, these contributions are used by The Out-of-Door Academy on a daily basis where the needs and opportunities are greatest. Building our Endowment An endowment is a permanent fund from which only a percentage of earned income is spent and the principal is invested under the guidance of the Board of Trustees. Strong endowments enable schools to endure fluctuations in enrollment and market demand by diminishing dependence on tuition revenue. While the school’s annual operating expenses are primarily met through tuition and annual gifts, the school’s endowment provides long-term financial security, enabling mission-driven decisions to be made with visionary planning for academic excellence. During the 2011-2012 school year, The Out-of-Door Academy was very fortunate to have received restricted funding toward several projects, programs, and initiatives: The Robert P. True Endowment for the Dramatic Arts Established in 2007 by a group of Out-of-Door drama parents, this endowment recognizes Mr. Robert P. True’s 10 years of service as the founding director of the drama program at The Outof-Door Academy. It also funds The Robert P. True Drama Award, given to the senior who has made the most significant contribution to the Out-of-Door drama program during his/her tenure at the school. The 2011-2012 recipient was Timothy Olson. The Dr. & Mrs. Clarence A. Griffin Endowed Fund for the Arts Established in the spring of 2004, this fund continues to provide needed assistance in continuing to build excellence in the arts program, as well as to generate ongoing lifetime support for the arts program. This endowment also funds the Griffin Awards for Excellence in the Arts, given to three graduating seniors in the categories of performing arts, musical arts, and fine arts. The 2011-2012 award recipients were: Jonathan Greer and Sarah Eichenbaum (musical arts), Amanda Pierce (visual arts), and Cara Messina and Neil Sullivan (performing arts.) The Ronald G. Gelbman Leadership Fund Established in the spring of 2005 by Mrs. Jayne Gelbman, this fund recognizes the volunteer and philanthropic contributions of Mr. Ronald G. Gelbman and involves the promotion of Upper School student activities directed towards leadership, volunteerism, and academic pursuits. Providing financial support for the development of student activities in the Upper School, the Ronald G. Gelbman Leadership Fund also supports an annual award, the Ronald G. Gelbman Leadership Award, recognizing a student in the junior class who has demonstrated excellence in one or more student leadership activities, excluding arts and athletics, during his/her tenure in the Upper School. Kevin Moody was the 2011-2012 recipient of this award. The Pendery Fund for Educational Excellence Established in the summer of 2005 by Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Pendery, this fund supports the initiatives at The Out-of-Door Academy which are specifically designed to thrust the school forward to better execute its mission and to attain and maintain its position of educational leadership among independent schools. The Dobosz Family Spirit of ODA award Established in the spring of 2011 by Mark and Stephany Dobosz, this award is given annually to a graduating Senior who embodies the spirit of The Out-of-Door Academy. Through action and deed, he/she represents on a daily basis, the core values that we hold to be important at the Out-of-Door Academy. Characteristics of a student selected to receive this award would include: Excellence, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility and Service. The 2011-2012 recipient was Angela Donnelly. Restricted Giving Thunder Athletic Club The Thunder Athletic Club (TAC) is a group of volunteer parents and friends who support Out-of-Door athletics, physical education, and faculty/ staff wellness through volunteer and fundraising projects. Currently, The Out-of-Door Academy fields 35 Middle and Upper School teams in 13 sports. Since the varsity athletic program’s inception in 1996, Thunder teams have won an impressive 15 District and Regional championships, in addition to 51 district, 10 regional, and 8 state individual championships. The volunteer support of TAC has been instrumental in this success, and as participation increases so do financial and volunteer athletic needs. TAC raises funds through the sale of annual memberships, season passes, and Thunder merchandise, as well as hosting the annual Thunder Golf Tournament. In addition to financial assistance, TAC provides volunteer assistance for various athletic duties: helping with ticket sales, scorekeeping, game announcing, and more. TAC also sponsors the ‘Team Parent Program’ in which parents volunteer to assist the coaches with such duties as organizing ticket takers at games, planning pregame meals and snacks for the teams, sending weekly email updates to parents, and hosting the end-of-season team party.

In 2004, a small yet passionate group of parents organized the Arts Guild to formalize, broaden and strengthen the parent volunteer base for the arts and to raise funds for the “extras” that contribute to the excellence of Outof-Door’s arts programs. Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund In honor of Taylor Emmons, Class of 2009, The Out-of-Door Academy along with the Emmons family has established The Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund. Lower School Athletic Pavilion Donated by the Dart Family

n October 31st, festivities at The Out-of-Door Academy Lower School kicked off with the annual Halloween Parade. The original version and newer version of Thor (aka David and Elizabeth Mahler) lead the parade around the Siesta Key campus, followed by Lower School students and their families. The parade ended with the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the addition of the new Lower School Athletic Pavilion, donated by The Dart Family. This permanent, covered structure features 5,000 square feet of covered athletic space, a regulationsized basketball court, 2 regulation-sized volleyball courts, fans, lights, and more. Thank you very much to the Dart Family for your generous donation of this wonderful facility. It will be enjoyed by countless students for many years to come. A quote about the pavilion from Coach Young: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coach Horr and I are extremely excited about having this beautiful shaded top. Now our students can participate in P.E. without worrying about the heat. Everyday when Coach Horr and I come to school we have to pinch ourselves because our dream has come true. Several years ago, Mr. Mahler promised that someday we would have a shade structure. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donation and we know that the students of The Out-of-Door Academy will forever enjoy this athletic pavilion.â&#x20AC;?

Baseball Concession Stand and Scorer’s Booth

n February 21st, The Out-of-Door Academy held a grand opening ceremony of two new baseball facility buildings donated by the Dietrich family. The single-story building features a concession stand, restrooms, and a locker room. The two-story scorer’s booth includes a large storage area. From an article in the Bradenton Herald: “We firmly believe in paying it forward,” Sandy Dietrich said. “And it’s the idea that it is not just for Tyler’s class or until they graduate. This is going to be here for decades. And so it’s something that the community can come and enjoy.” Billy Dietrich said the motto displayed in the locker room, “Leave no doubt,” directly relates to Taylor Emmons. It was an important part of the renovations, he said. “His hat, his glove, his name, everything about him and what he stood for,” Dietrich said. “He gave 100 percent on the field, on and off the field, all the time... That was what he was about and that’s what we’re about.” The Out-of-Door Academy is grateful for the Dietrich family’s generous gift.

Banyan Ball 2012: The Emerald Isle The Banyan Ball - The Out-of-Door Academy’s annual gala - was held under a glamorous tent on the football field on the Uihlein Campus at Lakewood Ranch. Event chairs, Tracee Murphy Bomberger and Michelle Lea, along with over 400 guests, came together for this special event. The theme was “The Emerald Isle: A Claddaugh Affair of Friendship, Love, and Loyalty.” Over $350,000 was raised towards the school’s mission to provide an environment in which students strive to achieve high academic goals and to build character through a balanced program of academics, the arts, and athletics.

Parent Association The Parent Association is a purely volunteer organization comprised of all the families in our community. This past year, we were successful in fulfilling our mission to support, promote, strengthen and enhance our community by organizing and sponsoring many community building events and by assisting by volunteering in many school sponsored events as well. Participating in Parent Association events is a wonderful way to meet other families and become involved in our community. Back to School Coffees, held on all campuses in early September, provided an opportunity to welcome new families to our community, to welcome back existing families and share the exciting activities planned for the school year. Our annual Thunder Fun Day, held in November, was instituted four years ago by Elizabeth Mahler to provide a fun, family celebration at our Uihlein campus and Petrik Thunderdome. While fund raising is not the focus of the Parent Association, the success of this event has provided the Parent Association with an opportunity to support the school and faculty fiscally. Thanks to the continuing dedication of our corporate and family sponsors, many of whom have supported this event since its inception, as well as our parent, teacher, and student volunteers, this event has grown to become the “must do” event in the fall raising thousands of dollars and bringing hundreds of families together to, among other things, play games, challenge one another on the obstacle course, win a cake on the “cakewalk,” and listen to music performed by our students on the quad. The competition for the second annual Chili Cookoff was tough with former champion Michael France handing off his crown to Richard Karp. In December, the annual Holiday Luncheon, held at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club, broke last year’s attendance and fund raising records thanks to the efforts of Chair, Renee Preininger and her fabulous committee. Guests were greeted by the superb music of our Lower and Upper School Strings and Upper School Band, as well as the accomplished musical talents of Morgan, Victoria and Catherine Williams, under the direction of Dr. Lisa Rosser, Mrs. Nicole Porrello, and Dr. Linda Vasilaki. The annual Lower School Movie Night held under the stars on the Siesta Key campus could not have been more perfect. With ideal weather, more than 200 families attended to watch the movie “Dolphin Tale.” Thank you to Liz Bentley, Lesley France and their families for making the evening a resounding success! Our yearly events concluded with the annual Spring Luncheon held at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Thanks to the efforts of Chair, Julie Dooley and her fabulous committee, guests were treated to a fashion show hosted by L Boutique, fantastic vendors, and beautiful favors which included handwritten messages from their children. Each of you is personally responsible for the success of the Out-of-Door Academy Parent Association. ARTS DAY Our all-school Arts Day held on Sunday, April 19, provided a beautiful opportunity to showcase students' visual artwork and musical talent from the year. Special Events Grandfriends’ Day Grandparents and special friends were invited to the Siesta Key Campus for Out-of-Door’s Annual Grandfriends’ Day on February 10, 2012. Over 150 grandparents spent the morning with their grandchildren enjoying crafts and activities in the classrooms, art shows, and musical performances by the Lower School students. Grandfriends’ Day was a great event this year bringing families together. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Thunder Golf Outing 2012 Thanks to the leadership of Teena Humphrey and Chris Hill, the Thunder Golf Outing: Thunderstruck 2012 raised over $28,000 in support of the Thunder Athletics program. Held on April 21 on the Cypress Links Course at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club, this year’s Petrik Cup winners were Patrick Wright, Dee Dix, Roy Fullgrapp, and Chris Galvin from Bouchard Insurance.

The Thunder Athletic Club (TAC) is a group of volunteer parents and friends who support Out-of-Door athletics, physical education, and faculty/staff wellness through volunteer and fundraising projects. Currently, The Out-of-Door Academy fields 35 Middle and Upper School teams in 13 sports. Thunder varsity teams have won an impressive 15 district and regional championships since the program’s inception in 1996, in addition to 52 district, 11 regional, and 8 state individual championships. The volunteer support of TAC has been instrumental in this success, and as participation increases so do financial and volunteer athletic needs. TAC raises

Introducing Alumni Pavers

he pavers for all Lakewood Ranch graduates are here! We are excited to announce the installation of alumni pavers on the Uihlein Campus at Lakewood Ranch campus. Each graduate since 1999 has a paver with his/her name and graduation year. The inaugural class pavers form a circle under the victory bell in the quad and the remaining pavers are laid to the left and the right of the bell. Come visit and see your paver.

The pavers are in conjunction with the school’s oldest tradition. In 1929, the president of Rollins College began a celebrity walk, comprised of stones donated by famous people and Thomas Edison adapted the idea for his own estate. Friends engraved messages on stones and they were laid together to make a walkway. The Out-of-Door School students visited the Edison estate and with his friendship walk in mind ODS students made their own small stepping stone in 1933 to form a path to the Catherine Gavin Memorial Library, which is now referred to as the cabin and is the office of the Lower School Head. New stones are added every year on the Siesta Key campus by The Out-of Door Academy’s sixth grade class. Now that the sixth grade class has transitioned to the Uihlein campus at Lakewood Ranch, the fifth grade students will continue this tradition. Receiving a paver upon graduation is the latest gift from the Head of School, David Mahler. Mr. Mahler gives the graduating seniors a special gift each year. Some of those gifts include the victory bell, the senior quad, and the official ‘Headmaster’s Holiday’ as well as hosting seniors for dinner at their home. The Out-of-Door Academy is rich in tradition and Mr. Mahler has created new ways to honor our seniors and alumni.

Alumni: Lisa Gelbman ‘08 - Summer Experience

Lisa Gelbman spent a summer in New York City working with Ogilvy and Mather Advertising in the pharmaceutical department. With under a 10% acceptance rate, Lisa was one of only 40 interns who were selected for the coveted position. The 10 week internship kicked off with a hands-on project where grouped in teams, the interns tackled a new business problem and pitched a new idea. Her group focused on the millennial generation as a target audience and how that should affect the advertising strategies of the client. On a daily basis, Lisa shadowed an Account Executive and worked on the Novartis and Johnson & Johnson accounts and a few new business pitches. The workday was long and the job was full of responsibility and pressure, but Lisa describes the experience as “productive and rewarding, because I learned what I want to do for my career. “When researching to prepare for new business, there is a person dedicated to studying the disease itself. We need to know what it is like to live and breathe like the consumer to be able to know what they go through and know how to talk to them.” Lisa describes the long hours that go into research as the team needs to address every single need the potential client says they have as well every need they don’t necessarily mention in addition to factoring in a comprehensive competitive pipeline to be able to compile an effective pitch.

Lisa also enjoyed working with the creative side of the agency as well. She experienced the delicate balance of managing the clients needs and communicating them to the creative group to create a successful campaign. She not only gained experience from the internship and networking opportunities in New York City, she was also able to spend time with fellow Out-of-Door classmates, Mitchell Gilburne and Alex Salzberg. When asked if she felt prepared for college and life after high school, Lisa responded with an enthusiastic “definitely! Getting it all done is not hard at all because I went to ODA.” She remembers her teachers fondly especially her advisor, L’Tanya Evans, and tennis coach, Noel Dougherty, who both made a big impact on her life and always made an effort to get to know the students and create a comfortable environment to be able to discuss anything school related or otherwise. Lisa graduated from Bucknell University this Spring and accepted a job offer from Ogilvy and Mather as an Assistant Account Executive (AAE) in New York City.

Alumni: Alison Weiner ‘11 - Cheerleading at Villanova Alison chose to tryout for the cheerleading squad long before she ever attended a single class at Villanova. She knew from the moment she walked on Villanova’s campus that she was a die-hard Wildcat fan, but Alison was not simply satisfied being a “fan.” She attended the first Villanova football game as any other student would and sat in the stands to cheer on the team. While sitting there, Alison knew she had to continue to be a part of the action rather than sitting back and watching it take place. There was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to try out for the team.

Division I cheerleading squad. No matter what the sport may be, and no matter what your abilities are, just go to tryouts, and take the risk. You will walk away and feel like you accomplished something simply by having the confidence to show up and try out. If you want the opportunity to play a college sport, you have give yourself the opportunity to make it happen.

“The tryout process was nothing like I expected. I only knew of Outof-Door’s cheerleading tryouts and the amount of practice that was necessary to make the team. I was stressing about the tryout process and I was nervous to be watched one-on-one by college judges. I soon learned that the tryout process did not include judges, toe-touches, or any one on one interaction. It was run as a normal practice where they substituted in the girls trying out for the team,” Alison remembers.

“I can definitely say that after graduating from Out-of-Door, I was more than ready to take on the challenges of college life. Not only do I have the skills necessary to tackle my classes and easily handle my school work; I have a strong desire to learn something new each day and get the most out of every moment I spend on Villanova’s campus. Out-of-Door taught me exactly how to manage my time between a Varsity sport and five rigorous college classes,” Alison noted.

“My advice for any Out-of-Door student looking to pursue a college sport would be to just go for it. I NEVER would have thought I would come from an incredibly small cheerleading program and walk onto a

Alumni: Michael Calamaras ‘06 - MetLife Upon graduating at Out-of-Door in 2006, Michael Calamaras matriculated to the University of Miami graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering and a minor in Business Administration. He is also a Founding Father #49 on the roll of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Eta Beta Chapter at the University of Miami. “After graduating from Out-of-Door, I felt academically prepared for the academic challenges ahead. Although my academic trials in college were proportionately more rigorous, I was prepared to rise and meet my challenges just as I had done in my preparatory years at Outof-Door.” He describes his experience at the University of Miami as “phenomenal.” “College is an experience which comes to define you as a person via personal, social, and academic experiences.”

Michael stays in touch with many of his teachers from Out-of-Door. He feels those relationships are a great aspect of the Out-of-Door culture. His perspective on the Out-of-Door experience: “During your time at Out-of-Door, you can work very closely with your teachers, and they truly care about your success in the future.”

Alumni: Libby Pendery ‘06 - Service and Career After her experiences during her college study abroad semester in Ecuador, Libby Pendery was inspired to pursue a career in the public health field. Although she was not directly pursuing a job within the non-profit sector at first, she learned about AmeriCares through family friends and fellow ODA family, John and Kitty Cranor and it caught her interest. AmeriCares is a nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization which provides immediate response to emergency medical needs – and supports long-term humanitarian assistance programs – for all people around the world, irrespective of race, creed or political persuasion.* “It outlines a mission and system of operation that I identify with and am now proud to be a part of,” she shares. “It is an entirely privately funded organization, and I respect the caution and thought with which we approach our spending. I also value our operating principles and our system of delivering medical aid and desperately needed relief worldwide.” She is currently an associate in the Gift-in-Kind (GIK) Process Management Department. Her team spends the day reviewing offers and making acceptance decisions of medicines and medical supplies from pharmaceutical and medical supply donors. They also work directly with the AmeriCares in-country partners to fulfill their unique needs. Libby believes strongly in the mission of AmeriCares and in the two areas that really make a difference: targeted relief and continuity of support. “I think the reason AmeriCares is so successful as an organization is because we have the experience to respond quickly, and we communicate directly with partners on the ground so the aid and relief we send target their greatest needs. Partners review every single product we plan to send before the shipment leaves our warehouse, so they only receive what they need most.

I also think continuity of support is incredibly important. We work with a great number of partners, each with unique needs. The more we are able to support our partners’ initiatives— whether their focus is to improve maternal health in Tanzania or provide tuberculosis medicines in the Philippines—the more effective their programs will be. We don’t make it our job to decide what our partners need most, but rather let them decide and then provide the support to encourage their programs and promote success.” Her advice to current students: “Stay as open-minded as you can when going into college. I thought I would study English, but I ended up majoring in Biology. It was an unexpected twist, but ultimately a great decision because I feel like it opened me to many possibilities I had not previously considered.” Her favorite memory of Out-of-Door: “My favorite memory will always be Spirit Day, and especially the White Team winning the senior obstacle course in my last year. Teachers that really made an impact: My second grade teacher, Mrs. Keyser, comes to mind. She turned learning into a creative process, which was a very special and unique experience. The other is L’Tanya Evans. She was my English teacher and my homeroom advisor and such a valuable mentor.

Out-of-Door’s Annual Alumni Party More than 75 Out-of-Door alumni and faculty gathered at the L-Bar at Libby’s for the 3rd Annual “night before Thanksgiving” party. We were so excited to welcome back so many alumni, especially from the most recent graduating class who for most was the first time they had been home since heading to college. ODA Faculty were also excited to reunite with former students. A great time was had by all!

Alumni Association Holiday Party In addition to the night before Thanksgiving party, Out-of-Door hosts a party before the holidays. On December 23rd, around 30 alumni gathered for an Alumni Association Holiday Party. Many alumni had just arrived in Sarasota to spend the holidays with their families. The event was held at the L-Bar at Libby’s Café + Bar with tons of great food. Out-of-Door staff were thrilled to see so many recent alumni at the event. Two alumni even came dressed as Santa! A great time was had by all and put everyone in a festive spirit! Alumni Class Notes David Mather Siesta Key Alum 1959 David attended ODA, which at that time was ODS, from 5th through 8th grade before moving on to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. He graduated and attended the Bowdoin College in Maine. He joined the Peace Corps in Chile after college and finally settled down in Lyme, New Hampshire where he started a specialty lumber business. Now he and his wife split their time between New Hampshire and Horseshoe Beach on the gulf coast about 4 hours north of Sarasota. David is still friends with Jeanne (Steele) Stevenson who also attended ODS. David recently published a novel, One For The Road, through Peace Corps Writers. He had a book signing in Sarasota at Circle Books on St. Armands, and also one in Boca Grande in the spring of 2012. The book contains old photos that are 44 years old of South America. Bernie Gerstein Siesta Key Alum

Mr. Gerstein lives in Sarasota between January and May. We hope he will visit the ODA campuses and share with our students his wonderful life experiences.

Brett Wallin - 1993 Brett Wallin, whose family’s seafood business in Sarasota dates back to 1918, has completely renovated local seafood landmark Walts’s Fish Market and Restaurant, and taken in a partner, Chip White, who has an extensive background in the restaurant field. The market, which was transformed by the Wallins from a Burger Chef eatery in 1974, has maintained the adage, “the fresher the product, the fewer the ingredients.” Chip is running the day-to-day operations, while Brett, a commercial fisherman, provides the fresh-caught seafood straight off the boat. “We decided to take the building back to much of its original state,” said Brett, who had the windows, exposed beams and tables restored, completely reworked the kitchen, showcases and bathrooms and added an outdoor tiki bar.

Meg Abbott - 1994 SK Meg graduated from ODA in 8th grade in 1994. She is the daughter of Mrs. Huene, our infamous librarian. Meg married Eric Abbott and they reside in Sarasota. She has a new baby boy, Connor Robert Abbott, born March 14, 2012, weighing in at 6 lbs. and 14 oz. His big brother, Brennan, and grandparents Glendy and Skip Huene are delighted.

Bernie attended the Out-of-Door School for a short time, at ages 10 and 11. He completed high school and college as a swimmer, and he still swims and jogs to this day. Bernie has completed six marathons. He has been married to Mary Clarice Gerstein (nee Coffey) for 55 years, and they have produced 5 children, who have produced seven grandchildren, all of whom are intelligent, athletic, beautiful and handsome. Bernie has been retired for 18 years, but is still very active. He was invited to be a speaker in Japan and Germany on nuclear magnetic resonance. He is presently working on a second edition of his book, “Transient Techniques in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of Solids” (Academic Press, (1985)). Also, he has published 166 papers in the refereed scientific literature. Bernie was the first person to report high resolution NMR of protons in solids. The first people to report NMR in liquids were Bloch at Stanford, and Purcell at Harvard, who received Nobel Prizes for that accomplishment. As a young Assistant Professor, he was the 2nd awardee of the Wilkinson Award for excellence in teaching.Presently, Bernie and his wife live in a home on a ravine, with a deck loaded with tomato plants that produce

Chelsea Veeneman - 1997 SK Chelsea Veeneman graduated from ODA in the 8th grade class of ‘97. She announces her engagement to Albert Stickley III of Engelwood, FL. They were engaged in March of this year while on a ski trip in Breckenridge Colorado. The wedding is planned for April of 2013 in Sarasota.

Class Notes Victoria Mann May Gabriel Huntting - 2006 Gabe, also with a degree in history, he decided to try his hand in the - 1998 world of hospitality. He started below the bottom rung of the ladder at a Victoria Mann May was recently married. She is currently living in London. She is happy to be contacted by any alumni or staff planning to visit London or Europe, whether they just want to say hello or if they’re after some travel tips. She is a member of the ODA alumni LinkedIn group.

Nicole Pitts Smith 2002 Nicole completed a combat tour in Afghanistan as a marine officer of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force first female Engagement Team.

Rachael Morris - 2003 Rachel is the Director of Product at Pose, a global network for style available on iPhone, iPad, android, and web. Her role is to design and manage development, but since Pose is a startup, she gets to wear many hats in her work environment. Rachel lives in sunny Santa Monica where she frequents the farmers market and enjoys biking, tennis, and cooking.

Lisa Gelbman VonBlohn - 2008 Lisa graduated with a B.A. in International Relations on May 20, 2012 from Bucknell. She accepted a job offer from Ogilvy & Mather as an Assistant Account Executive (AAE) in NYC. Lisa moved to Weehakwen, NJ with her husband Jeremiah VonBlohn and their two cats, Bo and Daisy.

Amanda Armbruster 2008 Amanda graduated from Hofstra University in May 2012, received BA in Journalism and minor in Psychology. She now lives in Manhattan, and is working as a personal assistant to Regis Philbin and his wife, Joy.

Jamie Basilone - 2008 Jamie graduated from Flagler College on April 21, 2012. She is currently working with the Bradenton Marauders, a minor league baseball team based in Bradenton, Florida that plays in the Florida State League and a Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Brittany 2003, just received her Master’s Degree in Folklore from George Mason University. This fall she will be studying for her PhD in English and Folklore at The Ohio State University. Brittany’s MA thesis won the “Best Thesis” award from her department and she was also given an Academic Excellence Award for Highest GPA in the program.

Joe Meszaros - 2005 At 25, Joe Meszaros is probably the youngest owner of a realty company in town. A graduate of the Out-of-Door Academy, he got his degree in business management from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. When he returned to Sarasota in 2009, he worked as a real estate agent for two years under an established broker before getting his own license and starting his own company, M&M Property Management Group.

Chelsea graduated from James Madison University on May 5 with a BA in Art History. She has moved to DC in August, and has an internship at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Germany studying the German language, and a semester in Stellenbosh, South Africa studying African politics. In the fall, Lauren will relocate to the Washington, DC area to intern with the Institute for Multi-track Diplomacy. She has plans to apply to graduate school and study conflict mediation.

Kimberly Goldberg -2008 Kim graduated from Ursinus College on May 11, 2012 with a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Anthropology and Sociology. Kim was the captain of Ursinus NCAA Division III volleyball team. The team had a great season and attained the school’s best record since 1999.

Becca graduated cum laude at Tulane University in New Orleans in May of 2012 with a major in history and a minor in political science. She will be attending Bank Street College Graduate School for Education in New York City in Spring 2013 where she will begin working on her M.S. in Museum Education.

Natalie Kutat - 2008 Natalie graduated in May 2012 from Washington University in St. Louis with a major in history and Russian Language and Literature. She graduated with Latin honors, summa cum laude, and with high distinction in the history department, where she wrote a thesis called “Education is a Weapon:” Portrayals of Stalin in Soviet and Post-Soviet Textbooks.

Alison Weiner - 2011 Ali had a great freshman year at Villanova. She made straight A’s and joined a sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Ryan Kaminski - 2011 Ryan Kaminski made the Dean’s list the Spring Semester 2012 at Tulane University. He also made the Tulane football post spring depth chart as a long snapper. Ryan is listed under specialists as Deep Safety.

Meredith Vollmer - 2011 Meredith attends FSU and enjoys the school and all their sporting events. Attached is a photo that was taken of Meredith at a FSU football game (FSU vs. Oklahoma). It was a huge game and she was in the front row painted up. The photo was on the cover of an Orlando newspaper. Meredith is on the left in the red sunglasses.

James Crosby - 2011 James has worked hard at St. Leo this pass year. He made a 4.0 his last semester and has a cumulative 3.9 G.P.A. He is studying law and will continue on to achieve a Masters degree. James also passed his initial interview with Homeland Security and The Joint Terrorism Task Force. He wanted to let us know that the teachers making him work hard at ODA has paid off.

Emilie Laperriere- 2008 Emille graduated from (FIT ) Fashion Institute of Technology in 2012 with Bachelor of Science in communication. She received a job offer from major model management working as the president’s assistant and junior booker in the women’s division.

Kyle Pack - 2008 Kyle graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in December of 2011 with cum laude honors. Since then he has started a Master’s degree in Business at Stetson University, and will graduate from Stetson in the Fall of 2013.
