NEW PROJECT IN NEW ORLEANS On September 24, after a very long wait, the Odebrecht Team finally received the news we all had been waiting for: LPV 148.02 is ours! As part of the US Army Corps of Engineers’ 100-year Hurricane Protection Plan, this $278 million project is an essential part of the New Orleans Hurricane Storm Damage and Risk Reduction System (HSDSRS) in St. Bernard Parish. With the recent completion of LPV 148.01, Odebrecht’s Chalmette Loop Levee project, elevation has been brought up to 20 feet; this new project will construct a new T-wall to a final elevation that will vary between 27-32 feet. A SAFE

MOVE

Safety is a priority for Odebrecht. Recent initiatives demonstrate our commitment to changing the safety culture of the company in the United States.

BUSINESS

Odebrecht’s initiative also helps subcontractors develop their own safety culture.

A SAFE MOVE (CONT.)

Odebrecht USA is working to obtain OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) status - the recognition for premier safety and health management systems. “The VPP initiative is one of many efforts we have launched that have contributed to our enhanced safety culture,” explains Debbie Hampton, Odebrecht USA’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Officer, who is leading all trainings and campaigns. As part of the VPP program, the OSHA 30-Hour courses taking place at our jobsites and being offered at no cost have become extremely popular – since March 2009, 138 people have completed the course. In addition to Odebrecht Team members, the VPP program counts on the participation of our joint venture partners, Clients, and subs. Greg Mears, General Superintendent for the MIA Mover believes this integration “promotes teamwork and a safer environment with increased levels of awareness for all.” “The Odebrecht VPP OSHA 30-Hour was a riveting experience,” said Tony Wilcox, from the North Terminal’s safety team. “There were no big I's and little u's. Everyone was on a mission. They came with a purpose.”

“The people in our organization who want to change our safety culture are making the significant impact,” believes Mark Poropat, General Superintendent for the Metrorail MIC-Earlington Heights Connector. “If it were not for the individuals who continue to be part of our safety culture we would not change. We have taken our safety culture from a responsibility to a commitment.” Sergio Leão and Carlos Fernandez, from Odebrecht’s corporate safety in Brazil, recently visited the jobsites in Miami and New Orleans. They were interested in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs and believe several aspects of it can be utilized throughout the Organization. The Odebrecht USA VPP program continues to develop and its popularity continues to grow. “Our goal is to create an integrated, highly effective safety and health management system, wherein Clients, Partners and Subcontractors, are completely immersed in the programs. In order to create a world class program, we truly depend on everyone’s support and involvement.” says Debbie Hampton. O The OSHA 30-Hour class is open to all Odebrecht USA Team members who wish to participate. The next session begins in January but hurry up, they fill up quickly!

The MIA Mover, which will be Odebrecht USA’s first LEED certified project, is moving at a fast pace. Construction of the Mover is divided into three design units: the MIA Station, the guide way segment from the station to Le Jeune Road, and the guide way segment from Le Jeune Road to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) station. Construction of the MIA Station, located between the airport’s Dolphin and Flamingo garages, is proceeding on the Maintenance and Storage Facility Slab at elevation 29.6 above the ground. On September 26, the first half of the Maintenance Level Slab was placed using a 61 meter boom pump - the largest in North America. All underground utility relocations and Augercast piling have been completed in the guide way stretch from the MIA Station to Le Jeune Road. The first guide way beams will arrive and be placed in mid-October. Finally, exploratory excavation and installation of test piles are underway in the guide way from Le Jeune Road to the MIC Station, which was built by the Florida Department of Transportation and the Odebrecht joint venture will complete for MIA Mover use. CENTRAL BOULEVARD On September 11, we submitted a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) for the design and construction of the Miami International Airport Central Boulevard improvements. From the seven design-build firms that submitted SOQs, only three will be short listed to submit proposals. Central Blvd. will reduce congestion in the airport by introducing service roads to accommodate commercial traffic, separating it from passenger traffic. The project’s major components include new bridges, MSE walls, reconstruction of Perimeter Road, construction of a north and south service road, and reconfiguration of the existing Central Boulevard to go over Perimeter Road. Central Boulevard’s design will be integrated with the proposed Airport City, for which the Client has requested a presentation in November. O

Airport of the Year PHOTO: STEVEN BROOKE

Miami International Airport has been named “Commercial Service Airport of the Year” by the Florida Department of Transportation. Among other things, the airport was recognized for turning the Capital Improvement Program around, completing the new South Terminal and getting the delayed and financially troubled North Terminal back on track. Odebrecht is proud of having contributed to the airport’s success. O

LIFE

There are entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs

by EmĂlio Odebrecht

In my experience of over 40 years of work, I’ve learned there are entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs. I have worked with both and they fall into very different categories.

As a result, I have learned lessons that enable me to point out some of the traits that set them apart from each other. There are entrepreneurs who are never satisfied, and entrepreneurs who are content with the results achieved. There are those who create new markets, and those who limit themselves to growing their share of the existing market. There are those who seek to astonish their clients with innovations that anticipate their needs, and those who are satisfied with meeting the client’s current needs. There are those with long-term thinking, like statespersons, and those who are short-sighted and mercenary. There are those who make gut decisions, and those who are strictly logical and rational. There are those who are creative and make things happen, and those who wait for things to happen. There are those who formulate and design the course they want to follow, and those who are simply reactive.

Some have more hits than misses – when they make a mistake, they move on and use that misstep as a learning opportunity – and those who prefer to dwell on their mistakes. There are those who do cost-benefit analyses, and those who focus on costs.

True Entrepreneurs: • Prioritize profits through decisions focused on satisfying their clients and growing productivity; • Always seek more profits, but use them primarily to strengthen their company and ensure its qualitative and quantitative growth;

• Recognize that talented partners are agents for the company’s development and encourage them by delegating responsibilities that are always greater than the individual can currently handle because they believe in other people’s potential;

• Have personal assets and future – life and career plans – “wedded” to those of their company;

• Are leaders/mentors and practice the pedagogy of presence, which means sharing their time, presence and experience, and setting an example;

• Steward the company on the course of survival, growth and perpetuity;

• Share their successes but not their mistakes;

• Are aware that the succession process is a responsibility they undertake to the next generations, their clients, shareholders and the future of the company;

• Are humane and flexible, without being weak;

• Can auto-evaluate to ensure their own development and can identify teams and partners that complement their strengths;

• Are fully aware of the social, cultural and environmental responsibilities of the company they lead. O

Miami International Airport

Health and Safety Fair In September, Odebrecht participated in the Miami International Airport’s annual Safety, Health and Environmental Fair, which is geared towards MIA’s employees. Odebrecht and MIA Mover Team volunteers informed MIA employees about how the MIA Mover project, combined with the Metrorail MIC-Earlington Heights Connector, will enable them to get to work using Miami’s rapid transit system, decongest the airport and contribute to the environment. Our Future

Superintendents Since February, a group of 13 Young Partners have been participating in the Superintendent Training Program. Led by General Superintendent Mark Poropat, the program is grooming the young talents who will become the next generation of superintendents. They meet every Saturday for four hours to go on field trips, watch presentations, receive training, and participate in group discussions, in addition to interacting with senior superintendents. In September, they visited the Metrorail MIC-Earlington Heights Connector jobsite, where they experienced the installation of a 36” drill shaft. Mark is very pleased with the outcome of the program and impressed with “the young entrepreneurs’ willingness to devote their time and energy to come every Saturday,” he said, “(they) want to learn and show aspirations of being future Odebrecht superintendents.” O

SUSTAINABILITY

LEEDERS WANTED Odebrecht USA has launched a second incentive program for Employees to get LEED certified. We encourage all of you to get involved and learn more about how you can contribute to Odebrecht’s initiative towards green building practices. As incentives, Odebrecht will cover all costs associated with the exam and will present you with a $100 gift card when you become accredited as a LEED Green Associate or a LEED Accredited Professional (AP). Apply now and take advantage of these great incentives.O

Which LEED am I? What is the LEED Green Associate (LGA)?

For professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice, the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) has created the LEED Green Associate credential, which denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction, and operations.

What is the LEED Accredited Professional (AP)?

The LEED AP credential will continue to signify an advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices; it also will reflect the ability to specialize in a particular LEED Rating System. The LEED AP exam is divided into two parts. The first part is the LEED Green Associate exam, which demonstrates general knowledge of green building practices. The second part is a specialty exam based on one of the LEED Rating Systems: Operations + Maintenance; Homes; Building Design + Construction; Interior Design + Construction; and Neighborhood Development (available in 2010).

LEED AP vs. Green Associate

To be eligible to take the new LEED AP exam, candidates must have at least three (3) years of experience in a LEED registered project within the past three (3) years. LEED Green Associates can take the specialty exam at a later date when they are able to fulfill the LEED AP requirements, as long as the LGA credential is up-todate with the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP).
