Lim Tze Peng, 99, one of the most respected Chinese calligraphy artists is set to have his rst solo art show in Mumbai, India. e exhibition, e Spirit of Ink, is on now until 15 September, 2019 at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and features ve large-scale pieces of abstract art calligraphy that have been painted over the past two years, and will be displayed in public for the very rst time. https://www.harpersbazaar.com.sg/life/singapore-oldest-living-artist-lim-tze-ping-first-solo-show/

As evident in his work, Mr. Lim once said, “In my earlier days of art, I drew what I saw. In my later years, I re ect, and I draw.” And drew he did—the self-taught painter’s most notable earlier works depict nostalgic scenes of Malay kampungs (villages), the Singapore River, and Chinatown.

Singapore’s Oldest Living Artist Lim Tze Ping Will Have His First Solo Show

e historical Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum will also showcase 20 other of Mr. Lim’s works to depict his evolution as one of Singapore’s pioneering artists, whose expertise in painting and calligraphy culminated in his own abstract artistic style that he calls hutuzi (“muddled calligraphy”). Ms. Jazz Chong, owner and director of Singaporean contemporary art gallery Ode To Art, has expressed the importance of Lim Tze Peng and of this exhibition, saying: “With this year being the 200th anniversary of the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Ra es, it is vital for us to re ect on what it means to be Singaporean, the values, the beliefs and the art that binds us. We are proud to bring Singapore’s oldest artist, Lim Tze Peng’s artworks to India and host his rst exhibition there to strengthen cultural exchange within the Southeast Asia regions.” Take a look at the o cial exhibition images below.
