The Dalí Sculpture Collection “You Dalí, as a sculptor will be considered unique. You will reveal your great genius, your possibilities for transformation and creative capacity.” Dalí’s wife, Gala

Salvador Dalí was not only a painter, he was a multi faceted artist in every sense of the word. He was widely recognised as sculptor, writer, illustrator, filmmaker, jewellery designer and more. “Painting is an infinitely minute part of my personality.” One major aspect of Dalí’s complete lifework is the creation of a collection of bronze museum sculptures. The passion and overwhelming desire to express himself sculpturally lasted throughout his entire life span, dating from 1934 until 1987. Dalí was fascinated by this form of transformation and created original maquettes and designs to be made into sculptures and objects. In this way, Dalí’s creative genius manifests into three-dimensionality, bringing form to sculptures which are amongst the most famous and beloved iconographic images created by Dalí during his lifetime. The sculptures described in the following pages are rich in Dalinian symbolism. Dalí used certain items and events from his childhood which appear recurrently in his work as icons, which are in fact rich in emotional meaning. These items embody some of Dalí’s strongest beliefs; his obsession with time, as depicted in his notorious 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory, is also present in his sculptures Profile of Time and Nobility of Time; his fascination with beauty and the female form can be seen in the Space Venus and the Woman Aflame sculptures; the crutch, another familiar motif in Dalí’s work symbolising support and stability which features in Alice in Wonderland and Snail and the Angel. Over the past twenty five years, these sculptures have toured over eighty prestigious museums and locations |4

and have been seen by more than ten million people. This extraordinary collection brings to light a previously unknown aspect of Dalí’s work, allowing sculpture to take on a more important role. Inspired by his most famous paintings, his bronze sculptures represent a significant aspect of three dimensional surrealism and bear witness to the expressive force of his surrealistic iconographic images.

Dalí in the Third Dimension Presenting the Stratton Foundation Collection Over a forty-year period the Stratton Foundation has assembled the world’s foremost collection of Dalí sculpture, reflecting Dalí’s vision in three dimensions. At a very early age, when he was working on illustrations for Les Chants de Maldoror (1934), Salvador Dalí sculpted plaster figures (today nowhere to be found) and designed surrealist objects that were later exhibited and in the years to follow were produced in limited series. When Dalí became internationally recognized in the United States (1939-1948) during World War II, he fully understood that representing his work and ideas three dimensionally was a formidable propaganda tool. He developed sketches and models, which were then selected and made into sculptures to bring out their brilliance and ranged from small figures for showrooms to monumental sculptures in public squares. In 1931, Salvador Dalí made a painting that would become an icon, The Persistence of Memory (Moma, New York), and then about 10 years later The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1952-1954, The Salvador Dalí Museum, St Petersburg, Florida). The theme around malleable time, symbolised by the melting watch, was regularly implemented by Dalí, giving birth to several sculptures after 1939 during the second half of his artistic years, including The Persistence of Memory (1980) or The Persistence of Memory and the Profile of Time (1977-1984). The melting watches were also incorporated into various scenes, such as The Nobility of Time sculpture (1977-1984). It was Beniamino Levi, the renowned art collector from Milan, who inspired the development of Dalí’s sculptures, and who saw Dalí as “aesthetically” Italian. Levi originally met the Catalan artist for an exhibition project, which led to plans to develop sculptures in an effort to expose the work of this genius to a larger audience; many of these sculptures were produced in collaboration with Enrique Sabater, the artist’s secretary. The Stratton Foundation collection offers models of objects and sculptures linked to the surrealist period of the 1930s, produced by collectors and galleries that worked closely with the artist, such as Galerie André-

François Petit in Paris for the Javanese Mannequin (1969) directly from the eponymous artwork fashioned in 1934, or even Yin and Yang (1968) from the Ampurdanese Yin and Yang (1936). Max Clarac produced surrealist objects and sculptures for the Galerie du Dragon, the most famous being Venus with Drawers (1964), designed in 1936 with the help of Marcel Duchamp (today, the plaster mould is in the Chicago Art Institute). In 1964, Dalí designed two other Venuses of similar size as the famous marble sculpture in the Louvre Museum, one with drawers and the second, the very dynamic Topological Metamorphosis of the Venus of Milo with Drawers, exhibited on several occasions, the last time in 2006 at the entrance of the retrospective Dalí exhibition in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, as well as The Train Station at Perpignan or Pop, Op, Yes-yes, Pompier. Literature and major historical figures were also sources of inspiration, including Louis XIV; he painted the Sun King in gouache in 1971, which later became a sculpture, The Surrealist Knight (1971-1984). Other heroes, borrowed from literary fiction, such as Lady Godiva or Alice in Wonderland took on various forms in sculpture. The young heroine created in a book by Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) was used, along with her skipping rope, throughout all Dalí’s work. She appeared around 1934-1936 in the painting entitled Morphological Echo, metamorphosis into a church tower, used in other paintings and then made into a sculpture in 1984. The unicorn in Greek mythology - the narwhal of the marine world - was used by Dalí, and specifically the horn, in order to recreate a reproduction of the Lacemaker by Vermeer in May 1955 at the Vincennes Zoo in Paris for his film with Robert Descharnes The Amazing Adventure of the Lacemaker and the Rhinoceros. The tip of the rhino’s horn could purify water, an idea which developed into the sculpture The Unicorn (1977-1984), from the model The Agony of Love (c.1977-1978). “My battle […] against scepticism, in the name of faith […]” - Salvador Dalí Message-bearing angels - who in psychoanalysis may well represent manifestations of the subconscious

that guide us - appear throughout Dalí’s oeuvre. We find them in the sculptures entitled The Vision of the Angel (1977-1984) or The Triumphant Angel (1976-1984) or even The Snail and the Angel (19771984), originally three gouaches, then models and later adapted into three-dimensional forms. The snail, a hermaphrodite, lazy but also the symbol of knowledge, is in essence very Daliesque, in connection with the melting watch and the notion of time that flows softly, the guardian of memory. Saint George (d.303) - hero of Christendom, of the Western crusaders and immortalised by the legend of his battle against the Dragon - was also widely employed by Dalí. In 1977, he painted a gouache that was later converted into the sculpture Saint George and the Dragon (1977-1984), this sculpture can be found within the Vatican collection. With regards to Daliesque animals, other than flies, butterflies, grasshoppers, lions and horses, a pachyderm takes precedence: the elephant. First and foremost there is Surus, the elephant owned by Hannibal (247183 BC), the famous war animal that passed through Dalí’s childhood home, before crossing the Pyrenees on route to Rome. The elephant symbolises the four pillars of the world, as well as knowledge and memory. The artist worked with the dual image of the Swan and the Elephant in 1937 in his painting Swans Reflecting Elephants. This association endured many years and solidified into the form of sculpture in 1967. Dalí set up monumental masonry elephants in the garden of the Gala castle in Púbol. The Space Elephant (1980) contains a pyramid, which is a pure geometrical form symbolising a variety of elements, similar to Bernini’s elephant obelisk (1598-1680) in Rome. In addition to the permanent location where parts of the collection are on display - Espace Dalí in Paris (as well as having been exhibited at the Dali Universe London, 2000 – 2010) - the collection of the Stratton Foundation has also been shown throughout the world over the last 20 years, during which time the collection has expanded, with the introduction of newly acquired pieces. The collection has also been a part of exhibitions organised in collaboration with other lending organisations, such as the Mitsukoshi in Tokyo

in 1991 with the Gala-Salvador Dalí foundation and the Spanish Embassy. Monumental pieces have been put on display in Europe’s capital cities, such as in Place Vendôme in Paris in 1995. The collection has been presented in Asian locations, including Singapore, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Melbourne and Sydney. The collection thus fulfils Dalí’s desire to spread his Surrealist vision and to represent the symbols of his artwork in three dimensions, revealing his vision and ideas and offering the audience something to look at and to think about. In a world in which the population is constantly growing, the Master from Catalonia remains an icon of the twentieth century, even for the new generations.

In one exquisite artwork, Dalí deftly portrays the Garden of Eden: Adam, Eve, and the serpent, as well as the intricate tension between the three.

The artist captures the very moment Eve offers Adam the forbidden fruit. Astonished, Adam raises his hand in indecision, unsure of their fate

should he relinquish himself to the enticing temptation. In an attempt to comfort the doomed couple, aware of the heartache that lies ahead, the serpent coils himself in the shape of a heart, reminding Adam and Eve that love creates a whole, which is greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Like Alice in Wonderland, Dalí travelled a long and arduous road through the land of dreams, by means of his artistic expression. The artist was drawn to both the incredible story and the extravagant characters in this intoxicating fairytale. Alice is one of Dalí’s favorite images. She is

the eternal girl-child who responds to the confusion of the world behind the looking glass with the irrefutable naivety of childhood. After all her meetings with the inhabitants of this fantastic world, she returns to reality not only unharmed but unchanged by her surrealistic experience. Looking at Dalí’s sculpture we see that Alice’s skipping rope has become a twisted cord symbolising everyday life. Her hands and hair have blossomed into roses symbolising feminine beauty and eternal youth. The Grecian drapes of her dress symbolise antiquity and the beauty that is respected throughout the ages.

Over the years Dalí has made a number of drawings of this figure with slight variations. Significantly, in all versions, including the sculpture,

the face is concealed by long hair. Although the body derives from a human figure, essentially it is not human - this is not an individual, a human being with personality. For this reason the sculpture is rightly titled “anthropomorphic”, meaning “in the form of a human”. The drawers are empty, seemingly suggesting that the cabinet may be considered a place where we can store images that rise from our subconscious. The raised hand seems to warn us not to approach unless we are strong enough to accept the surreal.

Inspired by her own inner force, this vibrant dancer moves to the intense and passionate rhythms of the Spanish flamenco. Dalí was fascinated with the art and spirit of dance, especially that of the flamenco, emblematic of his homeland and known for exploring the full range of human emotions. The dancer’s skirts twirl around her in a spontaneous display of vitality and ecstasy.

The melted watch is the most well-known and beloved of Dalí’s iconoclastic images - the artist chose to portray this image consistently throughout

his lifetime, beginning in 1931. The ever-present fluidity of time is represented in this sculpture as time not only moving, but dancing in rhythm

to the beat of the universe. Universal time knows no limits; it must be remembered that time, as we understand it, is a human notion. Instead, Dalinian time is perpetual and ‘dances on’ stopping for no man, history or even the cosmos. The image depicts Dalí’s fantastical relationship with time, his perception of its constricting limitations and the importance he believed to be inherent in memory.

Instead, Dalinian time is perpetual and “dances on” stopping for no man, history or even the cosmos. The image depicts Dalí’s fantastical relationship with time, his perception of its constricting limitations and the importance he believed to be inherent in memory. This image is depicted in three different forms: Dance of Time I, Dance of Time II and Dance of Time III.

Dalí’s relationship with the world of haute couture began in the 1930s through his work with Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Vogue

magazine and lasted throughout his lifetime. This remarkable Venus, posing in the stance of a ‘supermodel’, has been created with a head of roses, the most exquisite of flowers. Her face lacks definition, allowing the admirer to imagine any face he desires. A dignified gentleman kneels, a ‘dandy’ paying homage to this twentieth-century muse.

Terpsichore is one of the famed nine mythological muses. In creating his version of the muse of dance, Terpsichore, Dalí uses a reflected image,

setting the soft, carnal muse against the hardened, statuesque one. The lack of definition in both faces clearly underlines the purely symbolic significance of these figures. The dancer with the smooth and classical form represents Grace and the unconscious, while the other angular, cubist figure represents the ever-growing and chaotic rhythm of modern life. Both figures dance side by side in everyone.

In La Vie Secrète, Dalí’s autobiography published in 1942, the artist stated: “The mechanical object was to become my worst enemy, and as for

watches, they would have to be soft, or not be at all!” Dalí believed that humans cannot rely on the non-dreaming or “real” world to show the absolute truth. This theme is evident in his sculpture Horse Saddled with Time. The horse, one of the most famous Dalinian images, is saddled with Dalinian time: it is time which controls all of man’s passage. Man believes he is in control of the voyage, but it is always “time” who is the ultimate rider. The typical Dalinian melted watch is used in place of a normal saddle. This surrealist horse can not be ridden or tamed by man, only admired for its beauty and perpetuity. The horse is portrayed as the representation of life weighed down and harnessed by time, symbolic of man’s fleeting voyage through life.

Dalí, the great Surrealist master, selected the image of Lady Godiva as one of his favourites and pays homage to her sensuous and shapely female

form through the conception of this sculpture. Announcing her arrival, butterflies not only hover around her and her noble steed, but also adorn her body as she plays her trumpet. Lady Godiva embodies earthly beauty, whereas the butterflies depict the ethereal otherworld.

This image of this elegant sculpture was originally designed as part of Dalí’s famous Tarot series, which was created specifically for his wife and

muse, Gala. The figure of Man with Butterfly leaves the banality of the everyday grounded world for that of the butterfly, which, being lighter will give the man wings and help him soar to a different physical plane - one where he can shed daily worries and habitual restraint.

Dalí’s soft watch is both draped against and supported by the remains of a tree whose trunks sprout new life and whose roots entwine a stone.

The terminology, “the crown of a watch” usually indicates a mechanical device which allows us to set the hands and wind the timepiece. Time, however, according to a Dalinian watch, is changeless and cannot be set and the watch itself has no internal power or motion. Given this absence of movement, the crown in this case is interpreted by the artist as a royal crown which adorns the watch, and identifies time’s mastery over human

beings rather than its utility to him. His majesty is attended by two reoccurring, fantastical Dalinian symbols: a contemplative angel and a woman draped in shawls look on. Time reigns supreme over both art and reality.

Dalí has isolated the central image of his best-known painting and given it the same title. It is a simple figure: a limp watch draped over the

branch of a dead tree. Dalinian time is not rigid; it is one with space… fluid. The unexpected softness of the watch also represents the psychological fact that the speed of time, while precise in scientific use, is widely variable in human perception. When we are involved in pleasant activities or in work that absorbs all our attention, “time flies”, but when we are mired in boredom or discomfort, it drags. The limp watch no longer “keeps” time; it does not measure its passage. Thus, the speed of our time depends only on us.

This sculpture echoes Dalí’s famous 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory in which the melted watch appeared for the first time. As the watch

liquifies over the tree, it forms into a human profile, underlining the interminable relationship between man and time. The unexpected softness of

the watch also represents the psychological aspect whereby time, whilst considered to be precise and fixed in its nature, can in fact, vary significantly in human perception. All men must bend to the passing of time. We see Dalí’s profile in the face of the clock. There is a tear falling from his eye, lamenting the path of life that all men must travel.

Dalí again transforms a traditional image by adding new and unexpected symbolic connotations. The classic interpretation of “Saint George and

the Dragon” is commonly seen as the saint’s battle against heresy and evil, Saint George being the guardian angel of Aragon and a celebrated saint of chivalry throughout medieval Europe. In this sculpture, we can see the artist himself, represented by Saint George, slaying the dragon, while his inspirational muse, Surrealist Art, exalts in the background. Metamorphic touches find their way into this sculpture too: the dragon’s wings turn into flames, and the monster’s tongue is a crutch, a favourite Dalinian image.

This sculpture occupies an important place in the Dalinian universe, as it is intimately connected with the artist’s encounter with Sigmund Freud,

who Dalí came to regard as his spiritual father. As part of the early Surrealist movement, Dalí was surrounded by psychoanalytical influences and

these ideas were strongly incorporated into his artwork. Dalí was captivated upon seeing a snail on a bicycle outside Freud’s house, and connected the snail with the image of a human head; the head of Freud. He was also fascinated by the natural geometry of the snail’s shell, and like the egg, the contrast of its soft interior with its hard exterior. Paradoxically then, the snail, the universal symbol of the idle passing of time, has been given wings and is riding fluidly moving waves. A winged messenger of the gods, capable of limitless speed, bestows the snail with the gift of motion by touching down on its back for the briefest of moments.

The Space Elephant embodies the Dalinian symbol that was born in 1946, when the artists painted one of his most famous pictures The

Temptation of St. Anthony. Dalí created the image of an elephant in the Egyptian desert carrying an obelisk, a symbol of power, domination and the progress of technology. Dalí painted these earthly temptations as a procession led by a rearing horse, a symbol of the mastery of one person over another. Four elephants stand on almost invisible spindle like legs of desire, and offer art, beauty, power, pleasure and knowledge. For this sculpture, based on the elephants in the painting, Dalí depicted it as having almost invisible spider legs, emphasising the contrast between robustness and fragility and contrasting the idea of weightlessness with structure. This fantastically surreal creature, moving through space towards the heavens, is typically Dalinian, symbolising a flight of fantasy to a mesmerising and surrealistic universe.

Venus is the goddess of beauty and Dalí pays homage to the female figure by adding his own special elements. The underlying form in this

sculpture is of a classic marble statue of a female torso, to which four Dalinian elements have been added: a soft watch, an egg, two ants and a separation of the body into two parts. The watch is draped over the neck to give us two opposing messages; that beauty of the flesh is temporary and will vanish, while beauty of art is timeless and eternal. The ants are reminders of human mortality and impermanence. The egg, like the ant, is a favourite Dalinian theme given the duality of its hard exterior and soft interior, and is a positive symbol. The egg represents life, renewal, continuation and the future.

This sculpture was born out of Dalí’s respect for Sir Isaac Newton and his discovery of the law of gravity, represented by the famed falling apple.

Dalí has pierced the figure with two large spaces: the artist implies that the living being, Newton himself, has become a mere name, stripped of his individuality as his incredible and revolutionary laws of motion obscure all personal details relative to the great scientist.

The Surrealist Piano is one of Dalí’s major iconoclastic symbols. The artist has chosen to transform the banal wooden legs of a piano, replacing

them with dancing female legs, thus creating an animate, joyous instrument that can dance as well as play. Dalí often blurred the lines between the real and surreal worlds, taking an inert and lifeless object and, with a wave of his magic surrealist wand, created an entirely new fantasmagorical happening.

The image of this Roman warrior as created by Dalí, represents all victories, real and ethereal, spiritual and physical. Dalí’s surrealistic interpretation

of the warrior includes the addition of a window of light, portrayed through a “hole” in the warrior’s chest. This window inspires us to attempt to see that which is not evident, as well as that which encompasses the dream world beyond everyday reality.

So light as to transcend the earth’s gravity, angels are a lyrical expression of Dalí’s world of dreams and fantasy - in fact, Dalí once said: “Nothing

is more stimulating than the idea of an angel! ” From the end of the 1940s, when the artist began weaving strong religious themes into his artworks, angels appear frequently in his oeuvre. In this beautiful sculpture, the Dalinian angel trumpets his divine music, wings spread, head thrown back, sending his jubilant message to all who will listen.

The elephant, Dalí’s iconoclastic symbol of the future is often depicted on mosquito-spindly legs, emphasising the contrast between robustness

and fragility, much like the contrast between the past and modernity. The animal’s jewelled saddle symbolises wealth and the dawn of a new era is announced by a flying angel, trumpeting success and prosperity. Dalí’s elephant exemplifies every individual’s hope for abundance and good fortune in the future.

The unicorn is a mythical creature prominent in legends as an intricately linked symbol of purity. The horn of a unicorn is believed capable of

neutralizing any poison. This animal also has connotations of chastity and virginity, both male and female and was adopted as the sign or ideal

representation of the “perfect” knight. In some legends it was also a symbol of virility. Dalí chose to portray the unicorn as a phallic figure whose horn penetrates a stone wall through a heart-shaped opening, from which a drop of blood seems to be slowly falling. The nude, reposing female stretched out in the foreground at the hooves of the animal underlines the sensual nature of this sculpture.

Vénus à la Girafe

Material:

bronze

Technique:

lost wax process

Year:

1973 this cast at a later date

Height:

240 cm / 94.5 in

Edition size: 8 plus 1 EA, 3 HC

The serene and delicate head of the classic and armless statue of Venus has been placed atop the long upright neck of a giraffe. The spotted and elegantly clad Venus is surprisingly ornamented with an opened drawer which protrudes disproportionately from her body, supported by a crutch

of irregularly elongated prongs. The giraffe-like neck and lengthy extension of the drawer, paradoxically, give the sculpture a classical equilibrium which creates an air of balance and harmony. Dalí has thus succeeded in the recreation and revision of a classical art form and has produced a startlingly new version of beauty.

Salvador Dalí reinvents a classic religious depiction through an unusual surrealistic interpretation. As symbolised in this sculpture, the strength

and supremacy of God is represented by a thumb from which all life emerges (as represented by the branches). To the left of this divine being stands humanity: a man bursting with life’s vitality. On the right, the presence of an angel, representative of the meditative spirit, can be found with his wing resting on and supported by a crutch. Although man is united with God, God’s knowledge is supreme.

This sculpture unites two of Dalí’s obsessions: fire and a female figure with drawers. The flames seem to have a life of their own and represent

the hidden intensity of unconscious desire, while the drawers represent the mystery of hidden secrets. This beautiful faceless woman symbolizes all women. For Dalí, a woman’s mystery is her true beauty.

Holding a perfectly formed flower and dressed in gently flowing robes, this radiant young woman bears Dalí’s most famous symbol…the melting

watch, which hints at the human construction of the nature of time. The artist allows the watch to pose the question - is beauty dependent on time, or is it eternal? The watch alludes to the woman’s awareness that beauty can be independent of time, whether it is corporeal grace or an ethereal rose.
