Foreword

Epoka University Architecture Department The department of Architecture at Epoka University is dedicated to providing an excellent educational experience for students intending to enter the profession of architecture. One of the primary missions is to provide an advanced curriculum that can offer to the students the possibility by which they can be responsive and active to human needs in creating the sustainable built environment, thinking on the needs, demands and problems of the society. The department program seeks to multiply insights and abilities of students, including sensitivity to the aesthetic and social responsibilities of environmental design, the cultivation of a broad, humanistic, world view, commitment to research, respect of innovation, an advanced understanding of the culture of practice, and sophisticated graphic skills and technical vocabulary. The education of students in sustainability is acting in a responsible manner in their future profession. One of our missions is to install in our students a strong social consciousness so they can be active in improving the quality of their communities. Its vision is to offer a leafingArchitecture program in Albania and Balkan region. It teaches sustained evaluation of principles, traditions and requirements of building in all its aspects. Its goal is to advance the profession of architecture by combining artistic talent, technical proficiency and social engagement in pursuit of excellence. In our department research and critical thinking is crucial so the students can be engaged to advance further their disciplines in different field of architecture. This is realized with an ultimate aim of making possible for each student to make a real contribution to the improvement of the built environment, to develop his or her intellectual growth. a major focus of the curriculum.

Our priority is to make the students explore new territories and break their own limitation, gathering new knowledge and training them to master new skills. As such they can act, make, construct and create via discussing possibilities, criticizing and shaping questions. Communication and dialogue is vital for them. The department of Architecture prepares students to be perceptive, skilled, creative and capable of acting in a responsible manner in their future profession. 00. Basic Design Studio

BASIC DESIGN STUDIO

In Basic Design Studio, students investigate form and the delineation of space within a two-dimensional and three-dimensional fileds, with an emphasis on hand skills and traditional design media. Students develop an understanding of basic design elements and principles and how these are used to formulate clear compositions. 9

01. 2D Composition

2D COMPOSITION

In 2D Composition, students learn fundamentals of the structure of two-dimensional design, practicing principles of composition - including pattern, rythm, shape, scale, hierarchy, repetition, variation, tecture and color, while learning to pose questions, solve problems and examine the role of design in society. Components of 2D Designs are shape, line, color, texture. In the design assignments, students were asked to design a 2D organization in a bounded area, a 2D repeat pattern, a 2D organization taking in consideration overlaping and juxtaposition concepts, and even a 2D organization using a complementary color scheme. 13

02. Texture

TEXTURE - WEAVING TECHNIQUE

Texture is the feel, apperance of a surface or of an element. Texture refers to the tactile qualities of forms. It is one of the components of 2-D surfaces, besides line and color. Two major ranges of values can be mentioned: “HARD to SOFT” and “ROUGH to SMOOTH”. Textures might be divided into two categories, namely, tactile and visual textures. Tactile textures refer to the immediate tangible feel of a surface. Visual textures refer to the visual impression that textures produce to human observer, which are related to local spatial variations of simple stimuli like colour, orientation and intensity in an image. In the design assignments, students were asked to design an organization of a square, a circle and a triangle, into a wooden framed loom by using means of different weaving techniques in order to exhibit different textures. 25

RELIEF COMPOSITION

Besides shape, line, color and texture, light and shape and surface plasticity-planar characteristics are the other components of the design. Objective was to understand and use the characteristics and potentials of the type of design which utilizes the intermediate medium between 2D and 3D compositions. In the design assignments, students were asked to design a continuous surface that is defined by copper wiring placed between metal mesh profiles. 29

3D COMPOSITION

The 3D designs introduce students to the fundamentals of object making in form and space. They learn to use a variety of materials to engage in projects that explore the relationships between line, spatial organization, surface, mass, volume, plane, shade and shadow. The design principles of hierarchy, rhythm and the formal-geometric identities would be considered. The aim is to create a void by subtracting from a solid, using the potentials of the three-dimensional development in space. Also to design a composition of three non-parallel, but mutually perpendicular, rectangular planes, in order to discover ideas that govern the composition and order the planes hierarchically. 33

05. An Observatory Tower

AN OBSERVATORY TOWER

The final project consist on designing a tower in a sloppy environment. The tower is wooden and it should be a site specific that illustrates the concept of balance-conceptually, physically and visually. IThe organisation should ensure multiple instances of spatial continuity. The tower should endure structural stability by taking construction principles into account. Such spatial continuities should demonstrate the transition of different spatial qualities, such as opaque to transparent, permeable to impermeable, light to dark and small to large. After reading the book “The Little Prince” by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, students were asked to materialize the story into a design. The design consists of observatory tower with a hierarchical sequence of 7 different observatory points with various spatial qualities. The main space would provide an exceptionally good view of the Little Prince’s Rose situated in the Asteroid B612. The 6 complimentary spaces should reflect different motives of the story. 39

06. Introduction to Architectural Design

INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

In Introduction to Architectural Design Studio, students investigate space organization, inner–outer space relation, the building-urban and natural environment relations, with an emphasis on human scale and environmental context. The main objective of this course is to enable the students to make spatial organizations with due concern for structural and functional requirements, human factor and environmental conditions (orientation, topography, neighboring build and natural elements, etc.) and formal qualities. Students employ the fundamental principles of design when making spatial organizations (architectural design). They enforce the sense of structure to ensure stability of the building and to achieve coherence between space and structure, defining space(s) considering the formal and topological attributes and attain the unity of spaces with different properties. And the last main awareness is to pay attention to environmental conditions, not only as design requirements but also with respect for cultural, natural and moral values. 61

07. Parasite Structure

PARASITE STRUCTURE

ParaSite Structure introduces students to three main keywords, structure, site and parasite. They learn to use a variety of folding techniques of paper material, exploring structural rigidity through folding and geometry. The design principles of order, rhythm, control and environmental context would be considered. The aim is to compose a structure by addressing the following qualities: coherence: the pieces all belong together, nothing extra, nothing missing; progression: articulating a beginning, middle, and end, as well as a bottom, middle, and top; formal issues such as balance, shape, alignment, fragmentation, stability, defining space. 65

BICYCLE SHED

Students are asked to collaborate with a partner to design, wood structure spanning between two supports that can cover a specific lot (5m span each) in between two buildings of Epoka campus that can serve as bicycle shed plus another function.* The emphasis should be on the inventive and elegant joining of multiple thin wood elements to achieve a stable span. The span will be judged for creative and tectonic expression, but also for efficiency, structural performance, and stability. 73

HOBBY GARDEN

Within the boundary of the Epoka University campus, the green sloppy area near the lake is proposed to be designed as a “hobby-garden”. Students will be given each a plot of land of 5 m² to cultivate and plant various species of flowering plants. The “hobby-garden” will be a place where students are going to be instructed in groups about botany, botanists of historic significance, endemic plants of Albania, etc. This will be achieved by lectures, permanent exhibits and various information media. The main aim is to make the students aware of the importance of the environmental conditions, such as orientation, topography, neighboring build and natural elements. 83

10. Sculpturing the Terrain

SCULPTURING THE TERRAIN

Students create an environment to accommodate a summer workshop for a group of students to make architectural survey on the natural terrain of the Epoka Campus, near lake space. It will mainly be an accommodation of open and semi-enclosed spaces for university students who will be preparing documents of their architectural survey. The program will accommodate open and semi-enclosed spaces for different activities, which will be used for supporting the sculpted ground along with a timber frame system. The steep terrain is conceived as a succession of open spaces defined by sculpting the ground surface and building few extensions where necessary. 91
