IV. Intermezzo. Allegretto grazioso

ENG

Perhaps it is a little out of place to comment on the interpretation I give to Brahms’s music on this recording, but I would like to make it clear that the two cardinal points from which I start are a brighter sound than one usually hears, and the movements, deliberately tranquil as a direct consequence of the choice of sound, in the hope that sound and movements will direct the listener towards the aurea mediocritas (golden moderation) of Horatian memory, and towards meditation. I thus seemed to approach, as far as possible, the calmness and reserve of a man who never liked to raise his voice too much.
