Relentless Pursuit

I am so excited to share my debut jazz album, Relentless Pursuit. I was inspired to do this project by my family, who have been there through all the late-night gigs, rehearsals, and day-long studio sessions. Their support inspired me to give my best musical efforts to this project. I owe a great debt to all my private instructors, my university educators, my friends, and fellow musicians, who have always pushed me to reach a higher level. Listening, studying, performing, and having the opportunity to talk to some of the jazz greats, gave me a sense of responsibility to keep this art form, called jazz, alive for generations to come. My thought process while writing, creating, and composing this music was to connect with the listening audience on a musical, spiritual, and inspirational level. My hope is that anyone listening will connect and relate to the music no matter what age, race, background, or musical preference.

My idea for the album was to write music that is interesting and enjoyable for both the hardcore jazz listener and the casual listener. The titles were inspired by what I was experiencing while writing the music. One night, while writing in the middle of the night, I was so tired, and I thought to myself that I must be relentless to complete this project. That is how I came up with the title, Relentless Pursuit. There are always hills and valleys as you pursue your goals, but you must remain relentless in your pursuit to reach them. You must never say never, listen to your inner thoughts to open your uncharted soul to allow that transformation that you feel as you seek a new horizon. Once you have climbed that mountain and feel that cool breeze of accomplishment, you can finally celebrate and enjoy some chicken ‘n’ hot sauce or whatever meal that makes you happy. We are all in the pursuit of love, joy, happiness, equality, a sense of peace and God’s grace. These compositions are arranged to take the listener along the journey through not only the music, but this thing called life.

Never Say Never

How many times have you heard someone say “I am never gonna reach my goal, I am never gonna …”? In this song, the horns start out blazing to capture your attention and it helps us realize: “I can do this, it can happen, if you don’t give up”. My hope is that it inspires you to keep reaching for the stars and never say never.

Inner Thoughts

My brother Frankie Addison sets the tone as he is featured on the soprano saxophone. This song was led by the spirit. It reflects what I felt at the time when I had no creative ideas and I realized I had to dig deep into myself to pull out things that would be musical and tell the story of how I was feeling at the time. I followed the spirit and it allowed me to enter my inner thoughts.

Uncharted Soul

Like a ship sails the seven seas, a rocket blasts off into space or a new territory is discovered, all of these lead to uncharted places, just as this song does. We all have parts of ourselves that we keep hidden. Release your fears and allow this song to reach that part of your soul that has never been touched.

Chicken ‘N’ Hot Sauce

This is a fun tune that gives you a little funk, a little New Orleans Street beat and some swing. Dave Marsh, bassist, sets it off up top. I am not sure what you like to do, but after a session, sometimes me and the fellas like to smack on some Chicken ‘N’ Hot Sauce. Some of us like to hum when we eat something good and I put that down on paper. So, whatever your go to food is, I hope you hum and enjoy some while you listen to this song, Chicken ‘N’ Hot Sauce.

Relentless Pursuit

One night while up in my studio, struggling to come up with ideas, I realized that in order to finish this project, I have to be relentless. At that moment the idea came to me to name this song and the album, Relentless Pursuit. This title track is very rhythmic with open, Latin ideas and a swing section that is topped off with Michael Fitzhugh’s trumpet solo to take us home.

New Horizon

So, when you think of a horizon, maybe you think of a sunrise or a sunset. In this particular song we are speaking of a new hope found in you. This bossa features trombonist Reginald Cyntje, who plays a very soulful, captivating solo followed by a very tasteful solo by pianist William Knowles. Always remember, you are the new horizon, the sunrise and the sunset!

The Journey

This is a funky, contemporary jazz tune that takes you on your own unique journey. It has its twists and turns and ups and downs, but it is driven, like we are when we are working to accomplish those goals in life. Take the ride with us and enjoy the journey.

Transformation

This is a high-powered tune that has various time signatures to take you on a path to unleash that new you. You feel more powerful, stronger, wiser, more focused and most of all unstoppable. Embrace your transformation as it takes you to a new level of empowerment.

Cool Breeze

This song starts off with my rendition of what I call the Blakey shuffle, giving homage to one my favorite drummers, Art Blakey. You worked hard, you stayed steadfast in your goals and you didn’t let anything stop you, you were determined! All your sacrifices have finally paid off and you have reached the mountain top. Now you can let the sun shine down on you as you feel that cool breeze knowing that you can accomplish anything. Though this song features no one in particular, I wanted to give a shoutout to trumpet player, Mike Thomas aka Mr. GQ, whose solo was killin’. I hope you sincerely enjoy it and feel the breeze.

A native of Washington, D.C., Tony Addison grew up in a home where music was always prevalent. Although he was surrounded by music, Tony found that he was more interested in sports and had a special love for amateur boxing. He remembers running through the house as a kid and stopping in front of the TV. He noticed a man wearing a white suit playing drums that looked like him (a Black man) and he thought that looked so cool, but he went on playing and never gave it a second thought. Looking back, he realized that image had a profound impact on him, and he hopes that he has the same positive impact on young people as well.

Tony’s love of entertainment and music landed him dancing on a local television show for several years. He always enjoyed listening to hip hop, go-go, rap, funk, and R&B. Tony was introduced to jazz through Washington, D.C.’s summer job program called Lettum Play. This program not only taught teens to play an instrument but focused on learning and performing jazz music as well as the history of jazz. He went on to study at Washington Music Conservatory, the University of the District of Columbia and through private lessons. He has been very fortunate to have played with Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Webster Young, Freddie and Lionel Cole and a host of others. Over the years, he has also performed for various U.S. Presidents, many public and private events including Blues Alley, the Kennedy Center, Metro Stage, Studio Theatre and Anacostia Playhouse to name a few. Tony volunteers his service for local hospitals, senior centers, and nursing homes. He enjoys serving in the music ministry at his church and sharing his love of music as a private drum instructor.

Ich freue mich sehr, mein erstes Jazz-Album Relentless Pursuit vorstellen zu können. Zu diesem Projekt hat mich meine Familie inspiriert, die mich bei all den nächtlichen Auftritten, Proben und tagelangen Studiosessions begleitet hat. Ihre Unterstützung hat mich dazu angeregt, mein bestes musikalisches

Können für dieses Projekt aus mir herauszuholen. Ich schulde all meinen Privatlehrern, meinen Universitätsdozenten, meinen Freunden und Musikerkollegen, die mich immer dazu angetrieben haben, ein höheres Niveau anzustreben, große Dankbarkeit. Das Zuhören, Studieren, Auftreten und die Möglichkeit, mit einigen Jazz-Größen zu sprechen, haben in mir ein Gefühl der Verantwortung wachsen lassen, diese Kunstform, die sich Jazz nennt, für kommende Generationen am Leben zu erhalten. Mein Gedankengang beim Schreiben dieser Musik war es, die Zuhörer auf einer musikalischen, spirituellen und inspirierenden Ebene anzusprechen. Ich hoffe, dass jeder, der das Album hört, sich mit meiner Musik identifizieren kann, unabhängig von Alter, Hautfarbe, Herkunft oder musikalischen Vorlieben.

Meine Idee war es, Musik zu schreiben, die sowohl für den Hardcore-Jazzhörer als auch für den Gelegenheitshörer interessant und unterhaltsam ist. Die Titel wurden davon inspiriert, was ich beim Schreiben der Musik empfunden habe. Einmal fühlte ich mich mitten in der Nacht beim Komponieren ganz besonders müde, aber ich erkannte in diesem Moment, dass ich unermüdlich weiterarbeiten müsse, um dieses Projekt zu verwirklichen, und so kam ich auf den Titel Relentless Pursuit. Wenn man seine Ziele verfolgt, gibt es immer Aufs und Abs, aber man muss unbeirrt bei der Sache bleiben, um sie zu erreichen. Man darf niemals nie sagen; man muss auf seine inneren Gedanken hören, um seine unerforschte Seele zu öffnen und die Veränderung zuzulassen, die man spürt, wenn man nach neuen Horizonten sucht. Wenn man den Berg erst einmal erklommen hat und die kühle Brise des Erfolgs spürt, kann man endlich feiern und etwas Chicken ‘n’ Hot Sauce oder ein anderes Essen genießen, das einen glücklich macht. Wir sind alle auf der Suche nach Liebe, Freude, Glück, Harmonie, einem Gefühl des Friedens und Gottes Gnade. Die Kompositionen sind so arrangiert, dass sie den Hörer auf eine Reise nicht nur durch die Musik, sondern auch durch das Leben mitnehmen.

Never Say Never Sag niemals nie

Wie oft hat man schon jemanden sagen hören: „Ich werde nie mein Ziel erreichen, ich werde nie ….”. In diesem Lied fangen die Bläser an, deine Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen, und du erkennst: „Du kannst das schaffen, es kann dir gelingen, wenn du nicht aufgibst”. Ich hoffe, dass es auch dich dazu inspiriert, weiter nach den Sternen zu greifen und niemals aufzugeben.

Inner Thoughts Innere Gedanken

Mein Bruder Frankie Addison gibt den Ton an, denn er spielt das Sopransaxophon. Dieser Song wurde vom Geist geleitet. Er spiegelt wider, was ich zu der Zeit fühlte, als ich keine kreativen Ideen hatte und mir klar wurde, dass ich tief in mich gehen musste, um Dinge herauszuholen, die musikalisch umzusetzen wären und die Geschichte dessen erzählen, was ich zu jener Zeit fühlte. Ich folgte dem Geist, und er erlaubte mir, in meine inneren Gedanken einzudringen.

Uncharted Soul Unerforschte Seele

So wie ein Schiff über die sieben Weltmeere segelt, eine Rakete in den Weltraum schießt oder ein neues Gebiet entdeckt wird, so führt auch dieses Lied an unerforschte Orte. Wir alle haben Gefühle, die wir versteckt halten. Lass deine Ängste los und erlaube diesem Song, den Teil deiner Seele zu erreichen, der noch nie berührt wurde.

Chicken ‘N’ Hot Sauce Huhn und scharfe Sauce

Ein lustiges Stück, das ein wenig Funk, einen kleinen New Orleans Street Beat und etwas Swing bietet. Dave Marsh, der Bassist, macht den Anfang. Ich weiß nicht, was ihr gerne macht, aber nach einer Session schmeißen die Jungs und ich manchmal gern ein bisschen Chicken ‘N’ Hot Sauce drauf. Einige von uns summen gerne, wenn sie etwas Gutes essen, und das habe ich dann aufgeschrieben. Also, was auch immer euer Lieblingsessen ist, summt und genießt es ein wenig, während ihr den Song Chicken ‘N’ Hot Sauce hört.

Relentless Pursuit Rastloses Streben

Eines Nachts, als ich in meinem Studio nach Ideen suchte, wurde mir klar, dass ich rastlos arbeiten muss, um dieses Projekt zu vollenden. In diesem Moment kam mir die Idee, diesen Song und das Album Relentless Pursuit zu nennen. Der Titelsong ist sehr rhythmisch, mit offenem, Latin und einem Swing-Teil, der von Michael Fitzhughs’ Trompetensolo gekrönt wird, das uns am Ende wieder zurück bringt.

New Horizon Neue Horizonte

Wenn du dir einen Horizont vorstellst, denkst du vielleicht an einen Sonnenaufgang oder einen Sonnenuntergang. In diesem Song geht es um eine neue Hoffnung, die vielleicht in dir steckt. In dieser Bossa spielt der Posaunist Reginald Cyntje ein sehr gefühlvolles, fesselndes Solo, gefolgt von einem äußerst geschmackvollen Solo des Pianisten William Knowles. Denkt immer daran: Ihr seid der neue Horizont, der Sonnenaufgang und der Sonnenuntergang!

The Journey Die Reise

Dies ist ein funkiger, zeitgenössischer Jazz-Titel, der dich auf deine eigene, einzigartige Reise mitnimmt. Er hat seine überraschenden Wechsel, Höhen und Tiefen, aber er hat Elan, so wie wir, wenn wir daran arbeiten, unsere Ziele im Leben zu erreichen. Nimm die Fahrt mit uns auf und genieße die Reise.

Dies ist ein kraftvolles Stück mit verschiedenen Taktangaben, das dich auf den Weg bringt, dein neues Ich zu entfalten. Du fühlst dich kraftvoller, stärker, weiser, konzentrierter und vor allem unbeirrbar. Nimm deine Verwandlung an, die dich auf eine neue Ebene bringt.

Cool Breeze Kühle Brise

Dieser Song beginnt mit meiner Interpretation des sogenannten Blakey Shuffle, einer Hommage an einen meiner Lieblingsschlagzeuger, Art Blakey. Du hast hart gearbeitet, hieltest unbeirrt an deinen Zielen fest und hast dich von nichts aufhalten lassen! All deine Opfer haben sich schließlich ausgezahlt, und du hast den Gipfel erreicht. Jetzt kannst du die Sonne auf dich scheinen lassen, während du die kühle Brise spürst und weißt, dass du alles erreichen kannst. Obwohl dieser Song niemanden besonders hervorhebt, möchte ich dem Trompeter Mike Thomas alias Mr. GQ ein Lob aussprechen, dessen Solo einfach umwerfend war. Ich hoffe, ihr genießt ihn aufrichtig und spürt den frischen Wind.

Tony Addison stammt aus Washington, D.C. und wuchs in einem Elternhaus auf, in dem Musik immer eine große Rolle spielte. Obwohl er stets von Musik umgeben war, interessierte sich Tony mehr für Sport und hatte eine besondere Vorliebe für Amateurboxen. Er erinnert sich aber, wie er als Kind durch das Haus rannte und vor dem Fernseher stehen blieb. Er bemerkte einen Mann in weißem Anzug, der Schlagzeug spielte und so aussah wie er (ein Schwarzer), und er dachte, das sähe sehr cool aus, aber er spielte einfach weiter, ohne länger darüber nachzudenken. Im Nachhinein stellte er jedoch fest, dass dieses Bild einen tiefgreifenden Eindruck auf ihn gemacht hatte, und er hofft, dass er heute einen ähnlich positiven Einfluss auf junge Menschen ausübt.

Tonys Liebe zur Unterhaltung und zur Musik führte dazu, dass er mehrere Jahre lang in einer lokalen Fernsehshow tanzte. Er hörte immer gerne Hip-Hop, Go-Go, Rap, Funk und R&B. Durch das SommerjobProgramm Lettum Play in Washington, D.C. wurde Tony mit Jazz bekannt gemacht. Bei diesem Programm lernten die Jugendlichen nicht nur ein Instrument zu spielen, sondern sie begannen auch, Jazzmusik zu verstehen und aufzuführen sowie auch etwas über die Geschichte dieser Musikrichtung. Anschließend studierte er am Washington Music Conservatory, an der University of the District of Columbia und nahm Privatunterricht. Er hatte das große Glück, zusammen mit Größen wie Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Webster Young, Freddie und Lionel Cole und vielen anderen zu spielen. Im Laufe der Jahre ist er auch für verschiedene US-Präsidenten, viele öffentliche und private Veranstaltungen wie Blues Alley, das Kennedy Center, Metro Stage, Studio Theatre und Anacostia Playhouse aufgetreten, um nur einige zu nennen. Tony engagiert sich ehrenamtlich in örtlichen Krankenhäusern, Seniorenzentren und Pflegeheimen. Er genießt es auch, in seiner Kirche mitzuwirken und seine Liebe zur Musik als privater Schlagzeuglehrer weiterzugeben.
