In 1990, in South Asia, only 74 girls were enrolled in elementary school for every 100 boys. By 2012, enrollment rates were the same for girls and boys.

Women may suffer different types of oppression and discrimination depending on their position in the social structure. This is the case for migrant women.

Many women still suffer from gender-based violence, violence for being a woman, and inequality in the labor market.

End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere;

Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other types of exploitation;

Eliminate all harmful practices, such as early, forced child marriages and female genital mutilation.
