2013-14 OHIO DOMINICAN BASEBALL

2014 SEASON PREVIEW A bitterly cold and snowy winter hasn’t stopped Ohio Dominican’s baseball team from looking forward to the start of its season. Last year, the Panthers had their most successful season in the GLIAC since joining the conference back in 2011, and with all but two starters returning for ODU, expectations are high for the boys of spring this season. “We played at a high level the last few weeks of the season, and that will only be a benefit to us,” said head coach Paul Page, who enters his 27th year directing the baseball program. “We have our core group, and we have the talent and depth to compete for a championship.” ODU shrugged off an eight game losing skid on its spring break trip – with six of those losses coming by one or two runs – to finish with a 25-28 overall record last season, including a 17-16 mark in the GLIAC. The Panthers finished fourth overall in the GLIAC regular season and was one of the final three teams left standing in the tournament after scoring victories over Grand Valley State and Lake Erie. The Panthers lose all-conference second baseman Ryan Rovnak, who batted .303 and drove in 34 last spring, along with four-year workhorse Nick Venditti on the mound (6-4, 4.68 ERA, team-high 75.0 innings). But ODU returns eight everyday starters to its lineup, along with the bulk of its pitching staff, and the addition of several high-level transfers and freshmen who can compete for immediate playing time will only strengthen the team entering 2014. “We feel we have the physical talent this year to compete for the conference title and a chance to play in the regionals,” Page said. “With the continuity we have with all of our returners, we’ve been able to focus on more of the fundamentals and placing an emphasis on not allowing free bases defensively and solidifying that area.”

INFIELD The Panthers return both players who started all 53 games at first base last season in the form of senior First Team All-GLIAC selection Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) and sophomore Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio). Raschilla batted .320 with two homers and 22 RBI, along with seven doubles, while Parcher batted .323 in his rookie campaign with a homer and 31 RBI. Also in the mix at first base is junior college transfer Ronn Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.). At second base, Urbana transfer Drew Ryan (Newark, Ohio), a senior, is expected to step in and fill Rovnak’s shoes. Ryan earned all-region honors last season with the Blue Knights, batting .401 with a .514 on-base percentage for Urbana. He hit four homers, led the GMAC with 25 steals, and drove in 34 runs. Freshmen Jimmy Gravett (Grove City, Ohio) and Bobby Paola (Mason, Ohio) provide depth up the middle for ODU. A pair of freshmen are competing for the shortstop position in Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) and Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio). Burson has been rock solid defensively for the Panthers during the fall season and in the early spring, while Evans has shown steady improvement and has plenty of upside. Sophomore Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) has slid over from shortstop to third base and will compete with junior Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) for playing time at the hot corner. Horsley earned All-GLIAC Tournament honors and batted .276 with a homer and 17 RBI last spring, while Jaskot batted 4

.268 with 13 RBI. Other infielders include freshmen Trent Borgardt (Pewaukee, Wisc.) and CJ Griffin (North Royalton, Ohio), while sophomore transfer Ian Huss (Springboro, Ohio) has potential to earn at bats as well. The Panthers have loads of depth behind the dish, led by junior all-conference pick Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio). Tisdale batted .310 with two homers and a team-high 39 RBI and has also improved defensively over his career, throwing out 14 basestealers last season. Junior Kevin Lydic (Dublin, Ohio) had an impressive season, hitting .311 in 28 starts behind the plate, while Bidwell and freshman Nate Davis (DeGraff, Ohio) can also see time at catcher as well. “Last year, we were a poor defensive team, especially early, and that cost us some games,” Page said. “We feel like we’ve really upgraded on that side, especially up the middle, and that will make a difference.”

OUTFIELD ODU also returns all three starting outfielders from last season, led by senior all-conference honoree Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela). Delgado started 43 games in center field, leading the team with a .325 batting average and 14 steals. He also drove in 29 and tallied a .418 on-base percentage. Senior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) is back in left field for the Panthers after hitting two homers and driving in 19 a season ago, while junior Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) remains in right field. Schluessler batted .296 and had a .425 on-base percentage, drawing 24 walks and being hit by 19 pitches. “We really feel strongly about the improvements this group has made from last year, in particular just making the routine plays,” Page said. “Jossue is as physically gifted as anyone, and Rudolph has all the tools to be a significant contributor. Schluessler plays hard and has really improved.” Supplying depth in the outfield are juniors Kyle Suminski (Fraser, Mich.) and Matt Jurevicius (Broadview Heights, Mich.), along with sophomores Austin Greene (Dublin, Ohio) and Dylan West (Westerville, Ohio), who has moved from the infield last season. Freshmen Nick Mazzone (Clarkston, Mich.), Dylan Reichley (Richmond, Ind.), Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) and Cam Willms (Dublin, Ohio) can also earn at bats during the season.

PITCHING Even with the loss of Venditti, the Panthers have plenty of experienced arms at the top of their rotation. “This has the potential to be one of the best staffs in the conference and one of the best we’ve ever had,” Page said. “We should be in every game with the talent we have on the pitching staff.” Junior Daniel Mooney (Wauconda, Ill.) earned All-GLIAC accolades last spring after winning six games and striking out 62 hitters in 68.1 innings. He completed four games and tallied a 3.69 ERA, while opponents hit just .238 against him. Earlier this month, he was named the No. 3 prospect in Division II by Perfect Game. Seniors Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio) also return to the staff this season. Blackburn won his last four deci-

2014 SEASON PREVIEW sions of 2013 and finished with a 3.88 ERA in 60.1 innings. Borgan has experience both as a starter and a reliever, leading the team with 17 appearances last season. He struck out 42 batters while issuing just 21 walks, and both pitched well in the GLIAC Tournament. Also returning is redshirt sophomore Austin Bueter (Wauseon, Ohio), who missed last season but was still ranked as the No. 23 prospect in Division II by Perfect Game. In 2012, he finished with a 3.80 ERA and struck out 37 batters in 42.2 innings, tossing a pair of complete games. Sophomore Ryan Colegate (Centerville, Ohio) impressed in his debut season, going 3-2 with two saves and a 4.15 ERA while notching 27 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. Juniors Alberto Canales (West Park, Fla.) and Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) also return. Canales has experience as both a starter and reliever, while Bartolone has yet to allow an earned run in 31.0 innings of relief at ODU. Transfer Ryan Bidwell (Syracuse, N.Y.) will contribute innings, and returners in juniors Sam Bohon (Worthington, Ohio) and Austin Monnin (Napoleon, Ohio) will also earn opportunities in relief. They’ll be joined by a freshmen class with flashes of potential, including Seth Bowles (Mason, Ohio), Ryan Davis (North Lewisburg, Ohio), Patrick Higley (Grafton, Ohio), Mitch Kern (Parma, Ohio) and Jaycen Newsome (Fairborn, Ohio).

HEAD COACH paul page

HEAD COACH Paul Page enters his 27th year as the head baseball coach at Ohio Dominican University. Page is the winningest coach in school history and was ranked amongst the winningest NAIA coaches before ODU transitioned into the NCAA. With over 30 years of coaching experience, Page developed the Ohio Dominican program into one of the premier baseball programs in the NAIA and guided the Panthers NCAA and GLIAC ranks. He earned his 800th win during the 2008 season and left the NAIA level with 864 victories, which ranked in the top 13 of the NAIA in career wins. Page also compiled a winning percentage of .683 in the NAIA, which ranked him fifth overall among active coaches at that level. He won his 900th career game on April 15, 2012, against Wayne State. In 1988, Page was hired as Ohio Dominican’s third athletic director and head baseball coach. As athletic director, he helped build the ODU athletic department into a conference and national power until 2004 when he decided to focus strictly on the baseball program. A tireless worker, he is credited as a key initiator of many ODU athletic department fundraisers and the improvement and expansion of athletic facilities. He played an important role in the planning and development of Alumni Hall, which opened in 1989. In the dugout, Page has been named conference coach of the year five times and twice named district baseball coach of the year. He has guided the baseball program to a 907-452-6 (.667) overall record in 25 seasons. Page has established the program as a national power, winning 11 regular season titles, nine conference tournament championships, six regional championships in thirteen appearances, and made six NAIA World Series appearances. ODU has won at least 30 games in a season a remarkable 21 times in Page’s tenure, including 10 40-win seasons. In 1996, the Panthers notched a 36-20 record and finished fifth at the NAIA World Series, the best finish in school history. ODU would go on to appear in the NAIA World Series from 2001-03, 2005 and 2008 as well, and the Panthers would finish the 2005 campaign with a school-record 47 wins. In his time at ODU, Page has produced 39 All-Americans and 20 Academic All-Americans. Under his tutelage, former Panther southpaw Jonathan Sanchez reached the big leagues and helped the San Francisco Giants to the 2010 World Series title. Former Panther pitcher Ryan Robowski climbed to the AAA level with the Detroit Tigers organization in 2011 as well.

Page, a Williamstown, West Virginia native, graduated from Muskingum College in 1973, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in history and was an all-conference catcher. After his days as a Muskie, Page continued his education at Mississippi State. He coached for two seasons under legendary coach Ron Polk as a graduate assistant before receiving his Master’s Degree in health and physical education in 1978. From there, Page became the assistant coach at Marietta College and established himself as one of the premier hitting coaches in college baseball. He was a key component in the Pioneers’ two national championships and developing a number of all-conference offensive players. Page and his wife, Sally, reside in Westerville. Their son, Wes, was an Academic All-American infielder for Ohio Dominican.

UNIVERSITY INFORMATION Ohio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 majors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a student-centered approach, with a commitment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction. Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fields and in residence halls, in rehearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instructors. ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expectations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of 50 undergraduate major areas of study including those in the arts, sciences, and professions. Led by a talented faculty dedicated to excellence in teaching and committed to helping students learn, ODU’s student engagement model focuses on serving the whole student through personal attention and assistance in collaboration with the institution’s Division of Student Development. Ohio Dominican is fully accredited and offers academic programs at the baccalaureate and masters degree levels through five divisions: Arts and Letters; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Mathematics, Computer and Natural Sciences; Business; and Education.

Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students. Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffi n Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall. In 2011 the students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrated the University’s Centennial anniversary. The Centennial theme, A Century of Transforming Lives, reflected on ODU’s Dominican heritage, history and tradition. This celebration encouraged the University community to reflect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Dominican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends. Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, committed to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. ATHLETIC FACILITIES Panther Field

Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Alumni Hall

Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One full-length basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court.

Panther Softball Field Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facilities in the state of Ohio. The brick dust field is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a field should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left field line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility Located next to the softball field is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refine their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offices for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Jefferson Country Club

Panther Courts

ODU also plays on Cumberland Trail. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and difficult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the finest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

The Panthers are fortunate to call the Jefferson Country Club their home. The highlight of the Jefferson neighborhood is the spectacular Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course that opened for play in 1992. Jones created one of his most unique and challenging courses on this magnificent site. Jefferson Country Club is located on a 372 acre reserve in prestigious Jefferson Township.

Golf Practice Facilities Panther Valley/Frank Damian FielD Baseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below streetlevel and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.

ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at the Golf Depot, located in Gahanna, Ohio. The Golf Depot features a driving range with a two acre of hitting area and four target greens to aim shots, covered/heating hitting bays, and a short game improvement area.

Currently, he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and its 18 varsity intercollegiate sports while serving as a member of the ODU Director’s Council, as well as on the Compliance, Athletic and Hall of Fame Committees. The Panther athletic programs reached new heights in the 2012-13 year, with the men’s tennis and men’s golf teams qualifying for the NCAA Tournament and a record-number of student-athletes achieving a 3.0 GPA. Blair was hired as Ohio Dominican’s sports information director in 2000. He was elevated to the position of assistant athletic director in 2005, a role he held until 2010 when he was named the acting athletic director. He was promoted to the full-time athletic director role in 2011. Bill Blazer – Athletic Director Emeritus Director of Athletic Development Bill Blazer began his tenure as Ohio Dominican’s fifth Athletic Director in August of 2004 and moved to the role of Director of Athletic Development in 2011. During his time as the Athletic Director at ODU, the Panthers won 14 conference titles and qualified for 12 national tournaments. Off the field, the Athletic Department has set high academic standards for its students as the athletes have earned a higher combined GPA then the general student body. Prior to taking over the athletic department at ODU, Blazer spent 14 years at Urbana University, where he served as Athletic Director, Men’s Golf Coach and a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Business and Economics. Blazer has served the NAIA as a Region IX representative on the Council for Affiliated Conferences and Independents since 2003. He has also served as chairman of the Mid-States Football Association in 2000 and again in 2006 and was chairman of Men’s Golf in the American Mideast Conference for nine years. Blazer is also a member of the United States Golf Association and serves on the Board of Directors with the Ohio Publinx Golf Association. In 2007-08, Blazer was named NAIA Region IX Athletic Director of the Year and was recognized at the Marriott Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri at the NAIA Athletic Directors Association annual meeting. Recently, Blazer was named the NAIA Northeast Region Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year for 2008-09. The 29 winners from all divisions were recognized during the 44th Annual NACDA Convention at the James J. Corbett Luncheon at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida. Blazer received his Bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in business administration and his Master’s degree in teacher education from Wright State University.

Sandy Rowley - Senior Woman Administrator A former Ohio Dominican student, assistant coach, and now in her 25th season as head coach of the Panther volleyball team, Sandy Rowley embodies the Panther persona. Rowley has been a fixture in the Panther athletic department. As part of ODU’s transition to the NCAA Division II, Rowley also serves as the Senior Women’s Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director for the Athletic Department. As the SWA, Rowley oversees the Panther Student Athletic Advisor Committee (SAAC) along with other administrative duties. Since her first season in 1989, Rowley has been a staple on the Panther bench and in the ODU community. A friendly and demanding coach, Rowley has guided the Panthers to 13 winning seasons, including seven straight from 1994-2000, and 18 conference tournament appearances. In 1995, Rowley directed ODU to a program-record 35 victories, including 18 in conference play, which is also a program record. The team has won at least 20 matches 12 times during her tenure, including two of the past three years. Rowley’s tremendous dedication and hard work of developing young student-athletes over the years culminated with her 400th win on Oct. 4, 2008, as the Panthers defeated Grace College, 3-1, in Winona Lake, Indiana. In her 24 seasons at the helm of the ODU volleyball team, Rowley has coached 17 NAIA Academic All-Americans, 46 All-Conference Academic performers, 68 All-Conference selections and 15 All-Freshman Team players. Her dedication to the collegiate athlete has been proven time-and-time again on and off the court. the gliac The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University (then Institute), and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were located in the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.

The GLIAC entered a new era during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The Conference entered another new era on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, joined the GLIAC. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC Management Council is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2011-12. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.
