By Victoria X Let me begin by saying what a treat and honor it is to be contributing to Odyssey Magazine as a guest correspondent, and how lucky I am to be able to cover Oasis’ Drag Idol finals. But before I get into all of that, I wanna give a brief synopsis of two other drag shows I got a chance to check out that same week. To kick off my writing assignment I figured, “where else but the Sassy Show at Here Lounge”, right in the heart of West Hollywood. For those of you who haven’t checked out the show before, GO!!!! There is always something for everyone, and with the frequent theme nights, such as April 20th’s Disco Night, which by the way, welcomes back ANTM’s Raja, you can hold me to that statement. This particular night, I have to say my fave’s were Chad Michaels and Detox’s dueling Cher’s review with a buffer than I remember Sonny Bono, potrayed by none other than Weho hunk Josh Griffin, and Morgan’s enthusiastic P!nk megamix. This girl never let’s the energy fall below “max power” and that’s why she is 2009’s Weho Award Entertainer of the Year. And I also have to give a much deserved shout out to Latina Magnifica, Ms. Venezuela, who did a crowd pumping performance of a Gloria Estefan medley, tambourines and all!!! Get it Vene!!! The following night I headed around the corner to Rage to catch the Dreamgirls Revue. With Delta Work’s hilariously wrong and twisted take on Rihanna’s misguided “relationship”, (like Oprah said, LOVE SHOULDN’T HURT!!!! Who’s dumb enough to let themselves get hit? But that’s for another time and column...) This was their 23rd, or something around that, edition of Drag Idol finals, and this was one if the few that didn’t drag on, and was actually enjoyable. DJ Wes picked a great ensemble this time around to be in finals. I was pleasantly surprised, to say none the less. If I were to talk about every single performer I would be here much longer than allotted, so I will just go with the notable standouts. 4th place winner Cha Cha, who started of the night with a campy but very well executed J.Lo routine, featuring the Lopez twins!!! Very funny and thought out. 3rd place performer and RuPaul Drag Race alum Ongina brought welcomed controversy to Upland with her “enthusiasm” for Jesus. Enough said. 1st runner up went to newcomer Anna Conda, who with her near perfect Lady Gaga duplication, is a promising star in the drag universe. And the coveted 1st place honors went to Venus D Lite, who dug something out of her trunk full of costumes, and performed what earned her her 1st Drag Idol title from 2004. Ironically, I was a dancer in it for her. Just a bit of trivia for ya. ;) Dancing to a mix of “Into the Groove” and “Vogue”, her dancers proved technicality is more important that appeal and sexiness, when it comes to performing. But what surprised me the most was the fact that while Venus always has the moves down, this time she actually looked like she was having a good time. Anyone who knows Venus and saw her perform at Oasis will tell you that she was more fluid and less robotic and that it is this carefree, flowing attituide that was on display that earned her her 4th title. Congratulations Venus, a wonderfully executed performance. Some other notable performers seen in the audience, in or out of makeup were Miss Christine, guest judge Ingenue, Deanna, Vaginal Hood, Suzie Q, Lady Xtina, Kimber, Jubilee (welcome back, boo), and Athena. This year it seems that the recession has hit the Dance communityattendance looks to be down but that’s just from my observation. My new favorite group is Mynx from our lovely city, LA. and this duo is destined to make some noise. They are part Scissor Sisters, B-52s and other eighties misfits. They don’t take themselves too seriously with songs like, “I’m So LA” and “Wolfgang Bang”. My favorite track on the new ep is “Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind” and it’s contagious as fuck. Holly Lovecat and Ara are the brains behind Mynx and they’ll be heading out to take over the world soon enough. Speaking of LA artist coming at you, Candy Ass (Hollywood) is putting the finishing touches on her ep and videos. So you better get ready for her solo debut ep that will most likely be out in May. Is the world ready for Candyass (Hollywood)? Ready or not here she comes. Stevie Nicks, the white goddess of Fleetwood Mac, has two new releases that are a must for all who love her and The Mac. Live In Chicago DVD and The Soundstage Sessions CD is a double dose of Stevie. The DVD was shot in Chicago and features her doing all her classic solo material in a rare live DVD. The Soundstage Sessions is her studio re recordings of the live set she did in Chicago. She covers “Crash Into Me” and definitely makes it her own along with all of her hits.
