Three months ago when we began compiling the program for the 17th annual Clarke Central High School ODYSSEY Media Group Banquet, the kids had put the third issue of DR the newsmagazine to bed, the iliad Literary-Art Magazine staffers were working to pull together, the Journalism I students had completed sports coverage, and we’d just begun getting ready for our big trip to Columbia, South Carolina - the SIPA field trip. It felt as though the sky was the limit. Three months later, as I write this note, we are wrapping up the school year after several weeks of digital learning, state and local shelter-inplace ordinances and our team members have not seen each other faceto-face since March 3. It would have been easy to throw in the towel in Mid-March, but I’m very proud to say our kids have continued to meet digitally to enhance their leadership and communication skills, to edit copy, to continue drafting stories of import to our community, to share the artistic and creative voices of their peers, and to simply connect with one another. While our keynote speaker is unable to join us in person, Mark Johnson, Senior Lecturer at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications, has recorded an inspiring speech for our students. Mark has been a long-time supporter of the works of CCHS journalists and his praise is a true testament to the work of our students. I would like to take a moment to recognize our Booster Club Executive Committee for all their efforts on behalf of our students’ work. Special thanks to Lorinda Crane, Dr. Meg Hines, Dr. Janet Frick, Mary Koon, Becky Long, Mindy McCage, and Miki Lu Peters for their shared leadership. A big thank you goes out to Kim Turner for ensuring our kids were fed during our after-school and weekend work sessions. I also want to share my gratitude on behalf of the staff, and personally, to our Odyssey Media Group Teaching Assistant Chloe Hargrave - Chloe’s presence this year was truly a gift and the entire program benefitted from her wisdom. Additionally, a huge thanks to Audrey and Ian Kennedy for the design and compilation of this commemorative program as

well as a special thank you to Ireland McCage for the curation of our awards this year. A final personal thanks goes out to Kate Kohler for her unyielding patience, cheering and positive energy. Continued appreciation must be offered to all our families who’ve helped to pinch in with meals, car rides, volunteering at football games at the University of Georgia, and for supporting your kids’ journalistic endeavors. We are also very grateful to our school and district administration for their support. Their help, along with the commitment of our Board of Education, allows us to cover our community and to represent our school in the larger community of high school journalism. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the many patrons of our literary-art magazine who contribute each year to ensure funding for the magazine. We’ll have eleven students graduating this year and between them they have accrued 28 years of journalistic experience - many of whom I teach during multiple periods each day. My dream for them has been expressed numerous times - be accountable to one another, be respectful and caring to those around them, and be willing to take risks even when it feels like the vision is impossible. After years of work within this program and their diligence during the pandemic, I know they will be prepared for any challenges that come their way in the future. Even though our year was cut short, the kids have done commendable work all year long as you will see on pages 14-17. The sky is still the limit for this group and I’m honored to have worked with them.

Lorien Awards

The Lorien Awards, established by the Campbell family, are given annually. Lorien is a 2006 CCHS graduate who loved poetry and the arts. For the past several years her family has sought to award the top poetry, prose, art and photography in each year’s magazine. Writers will be invited to read an excerpt of their winning pieces and visuals winners’ work is displayed here and in the 2019 iliad.
