MAELSTROM SERIES NO 2

Shayne Dark Aluminum

Maelstrom Series

Beautiful chaos—The new sculptural series by Shayne Dark is named after the powerful image of a maelstrom—a whirlpool in a sea or river. Hand forged from round aluminum rods and painted in bold colour, each rod appears to be woven into a circular wreath-like form.

Dark’s unique abstract work is often inspired by the natural world. This series was borne out of the global tumult of the last two years and time spent in the solitude of his studio envisioning maelstroms in brilliant colours.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR

Susan Rankin's gorgeous indoor/outdoor garden columns were inspired by her love of gardening and deep respect for nature’s beauty. The hand-blown glass ‘floral’ rings are stacked organically on 5 steel stems—columns that appear to sway like flowers caught in a breeze.

OUTDOOR SCULPTURE

From his studio in Consecon Ontario, Bill Greaves creates hand formed vessels that honour an ancient material and tradition. Each clay vessel is formed by coiling, scraping and carving the stony material into a voluptuous textured shape. This large outdoor vessel has a gorgeous deep blue and green colour on the exterior; the interior is a natural clay colour. Greaves likes to glaze his work with a dry brush to create a rich matte surface. Surprise! A small ‘snake’ appears to be coiled at the bottom of the vessel.

As a sculptor, Roch Smith often interprets the big questions in life in imaginative and playful ways. The Toronto artist is known for his use of toys –familiar childhood images that often symbolize profound thoughts. This outdoor sculpture rendered in steel and bronze portrays a male figure, dressed in a t-shirt and a suit jacket holding a long pole balancing barefoot on a tilted red metal beam. The image is reminiscent of a tightrope walker.

THE CONTOUR OF BALANCE

TILTED ORANGE

Shayne Dark Powder coated steel

120 × 186 × 48.5 in $65,000

This captivating, punchy orange outdoor piece is by Canadian artist, Shayne Dark. The industrial and the organic intersect in five tapered powdercoated elements as they emerge from the sculpture’s base.

“Experiencing the natural world will often give me a germ of an idea and then I run with it.”

Dark

Toronto artist Robert Clarke Ellis creates expressive outdoor sculptures in minimalist form. Using abstract shapes forged from steel…half-moons for heads and long curved stands resembling figures, two of three pieces face one another…the third—the interloper is turned away. (An interloper is someone who tries to become involved in a situation they don’t belong in.) The bright colours in turquoise, pink, purple, royal blue, red and yellow add pop art appeal and a playful note to the work.

The colours of summer expressed in generous brushstrokes of red, blue, yellow and mauve seem to float on a soft pink background. This beautiful abstract painting is by Milly Ristvedt. A master colourist Ristvedt uses colour as a language to convey deep thoughts and emotions. Adding visual interest, subtle stains of pea green are spotted throughout the canvas.

Milly Ristvedt has had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group shows. Ristvedt's work can be found in major public collections throughout North America including the National Gallery of Canada. She is exclusively represented by Oeno Gallery.

Harold Town

Autographic Print

Framed: 29 × 23.75 in $8,000 (c.

1950s)

The singularly brilliant Harold Town, one of the most celebrated abstract artists from the Painters

Eleven group formed in Toronto in the 1950s. A fellow artist introduced him to printmaking in 1953, and after buying his own lithography press, Town began to create a series of unique compositions often based on everyday objects or scenes. The process involved creating patterns through many layers of overprinting. This untitled print is rendered in hues of gray and black highlighted with pale blue and sage green.
