Great Gatsby is a 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Long Island-set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carra way (played by Tobey Maguire) is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby’s nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await. The Great Gatsby has already seen a film adaptation in 1974 featuring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, however, the 2013 remake directed by Baz Luhrman promises to be a visual feast for the eyes and a modern twist on an American Classic. The film hits cinemas nationwide on the 16th May
Is The Great Gatsby the next great love story? This adaptation is being promoted as just that, The trailer boasts a tragic love story filled with action, passion, and drama. However, the original literature focuses on themes of failure in 1920’s America. It seems that the film itself is set to veer miles away from the plots core thematics and messages to conform itself to Hollywood conventions and audience expectations. That is not saying that this
film is going to be anything less than spectacular. Luhrman is bound to produce what he produces best, an epic melodrama that fuses old-movie theatrics and subjective filmmaking, with bold soundtrack choices and stunning visual effects. The real question is whether Luhrman’s artistic vision is going to effortlessly blend with the major plot points that the book is renowned for.

W BAZ LUHRMANN Baz Luhrman has produced some of the most impressive stylistic films in recent cinematic history. Taking inspiration from his surroundings and his experiences, he famously created the Red Curtain Trilogy consisting of Strictly Ballroom (1992), starring Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, and his most successful film to date, Moulin Rouge! (2001), starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Luhrman’s Red Curtain film style is dependent on four key points: the audience knowing how the film will end right from the start, the storyline being thin and simplistic, the world created in the film
is one of heightened reality, and the film containing a specific device driving the story, whether it be dance, iambic pentameter or characters bursting out in song. These key factors are a consistancy spread throughout Luhrman’s films and The Great Gatsby promises to be no different. The trailer highlights an extremely bright and glamourous depiction of 1920’s America with a powerful, and at times, contrasting musical score. It is clear that Luhrman has distinctive directing style that dominate this highly anticipated adaptation. It combines exciting choreography and invovative cinematography that simples screams ‘Baz Luhrman’.

leonardo dicaprio DiCaprio has had a long and successful acting career with memorable performances along the way. DiCaprio has been developing a broad and varied acting portfolio over the past few years and it’s looking like he was the perfect choice for the coverted role of Jay Gatsby. DiCaprio ha s become a well-regarded actor any many (including us) are surprised his acting hasn’t been celebrated by a shiny Academy Award.
He has proven in the past he can bring different levels of emotion to a character and this role will celebrate that. Gatsby is intially presented as an the aloof, enigmatic host full of passion and action who then transitions into a more emotional and reflective chacter. We can’t wait to see what DiCaprio does with this iconic character.
DiCaprio looks comfortable as the suited up and slicked back self-made protagonist of Fitzgerald’s creation. ptaturiatur repe iditas millest quo dolut quiam ad ullatis endicia cus imus, con remque demporro iminveri de non et labore el ius.

Memorable Performances:
W carey mulligan Mulligan is rapidly becoming the fresh new face of British cinema. Without any formal training, Mulligan has pushed herself to the forefront of acting through sheer determination - a quality that you can’t help but love. Still only in her mid twenties, Mulligan has established an impressive list of co-stars from Johnny Depp and Christian Bale to Keira Knightly and Natalie Portman. Mulligan is the perfect portrayal of effortless beauty. Her elegance and determination are a perfect fit for the role of Gatsby’s love interest Daisy Buchanan. Mulligan has immersed herself in extensive research of her character and of Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda (who
the character is based on). She has the knowledge and ability to play the emotionally dysfuncational Daisy. Daisy is a character trapped in a cage of the previous century often saying things for a specific reaction. She’s in love with money, ease, and material luxury and although she is capable of affection but not capable of sustained loyalty or care. We are sure that Mulligan will be able to combine her talent with the aura of charm, sophistication and grace that surrounds Daisy. Memorable Performances: An Education Drive Public Enemies

The Great Gatsby soundtrack perfectly depicts the roaring twenties with a modern twist. Artists such as Will.I.Am add a modern twist to the soundtrack, while Lana Del Rey’s husky voice takes us back to the romantic, yet dangerous side of the drama. The soundtrack brings aroundentirely new songs from The XX as well as Florence and the Machine, whereas Emeli Sande and Jack White revive all-time favorites that encapsulate Luhrman’s artistic vision.
“100$ Bill” (performed by Jay Z) “Back to Black” (performed by Beyoncé x André 3000) “Bang Bang” (performed by Will.I.Am) “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” (performed by Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock) “Young and Beautiful” (performed by Lana Del Rey) “Love Is the Drug” (performed by Bryan Ferry with The Bryan Ferry Orchestra) “Over the Love” (performed by Florence and the Machine) “Where the Wind Blows” (performed by Coco O. of Quadron) “Crazy in Love” (performed by Emeli Sandé and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra) “Together” (performed by The XX) “Hearts a Mess” (performed by Gotye) “Love Is Blindness” (performed by Jack White) “Into the Past” (performed by Nero) “Kill and Run” (performed by Sia Furler)

Get the 1920’s Style
The Great Gatsby provides a modern twist on classic 1920’s fashion which can easily be transitioned into an everyday wardrobe. The fashion choices in the film emphasise a sense of decadence through dusky pastels, glamourous jewellery and embellished statement pieces such as headbands and purses. These trends are popping up on celebrities and in high street stores up and down the country. Below, we recommend a couple of pieces that inject the Great Gatsby glamour into your style.

CINEMATOGRAPHY The Great Gatsby is set to be a visual explosion of colour, light and stunning locations - all in part to the films cinematographer Simon Duggan. Duggan (known for this work on Die Hard 4.0 and Killer Elite) has shot the film using a 5K resolution with the RED Epic cameras using 3ality Digital rigs - an outstanding camera not much bigger than a steadicam which allows Duggan to film both on rigs and hand-held to provide reach detail. These cameras
are becoming somewhat of a standard in the making of a 3D film being used in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as well as Prometheus. Luhrman and Duggan are seemingly using fantastic cameras alongside a unique eye for detail to create a film that seems to be tailor made for 3D viewing. Even if the film turns out to be a far-fetched adaptation, it is clear that the artistic technique that has gone into the film will be undeniable.

movie game of the month
It’s a quiet month for movie games this month, with the only release being the underwhelming game to accompany JJ Abrham’s Star Trek Into Darkness Star Trek The Videogame (rated Pegi 16). The game, a homogeneous and vapid third-person shooter that reduces Kirk and Spock to the role of gun-toting foot soldiers. Frankly, the characters deserve better. Star Trek isn’t all about the action but even at a push the concept of a cooperative shooter could work, but the execution of the game is poor, filled with bugs, glitches
and uninspired shooting. The plot sees the Federation under attack from the Gorn, a reptilian race featured in the original Star Trek series. They’ve been given a modern makeover here, turning from campy, rubber-masked creatures into a race of generic monsters. They’ve somehow mustered the brainpower to open rips in space, and it’s your job to journey through space to stop them. It’s hard to find one good thing to say about this game, it just feels like a poorly made shooter with the Star Trek brand plastered on the box.
