WELCOMING ALL

2016 was undoubtedly a milestone year in the life of Belmont University. Founded in 1890, what was then known as the Belmont College for Young Women opened with 90 students enrolled. The campus has experienced both difficult hardships and phenomenal heights in the years since, but it never stopped striving for excellence or believing in the transformational power of education.

28

That belief is just as present today as it was in the last century. Perhaps even more so. In fact, in recent years Belmont impressed many locally and nationally with a record of achievements and unexpected feats. While many in higher education are being forced to drop programs, cut budgets and combat shrinking enrollments, Belmont continues its amazing upward momentum… expanding student populations, strategically increasing program offerings and further developing a campus noted nationally for its beauty and design. Being consistently lauded in numerous categories by U.S. News and hosting Tennessee’s first presidential debate provided even more fodder for this institution’s rising renown. And it was all accomplished because the people of Belmont believed in something greater, believed in what could be.

The 2015–16 academic year allowed a bird’s eye view of the progress that’s been made as Belmont celebrated its 125th anniversary and spent time as a community honoring the University’s legacy, celebrating its impact and imagining its future. What better theme to drive us forward than resting on what had gotten us so far? Quite simply, We Believe. The seven "beliefs" highlighted in this report nicely summarize many of the values we seek to instill in our students. As you’ll see in the pages that follow, these ideals also aptly reflect our 2016, another tremendous year for Belmont University. 

Baseball. The Civil War. Jazz. The National Parks. The list of subjects covered by Emmy Award-winning documentarian Ken Burns reflects the heart of American culture and history. In 2016, Belmont University agreed to partner with Burns on the latest addition in his iconic career, the highly anticipated Country Music, slated to premiere nationally on PBS in 2019. The Belmont grant will help underwrite a portion of the production and distribution costs for the anticipated 16-hour series, while also securing significant educational benefits for Belmont students along with national exposure for the University. As part of the partnership, Belmont will have the opportunity to host a private screening for an episode of the series

on campus along with a Q&A session for students and faculty with Burns. In addition, Belmont students and faculty will be invited to visit Burns’s Florentine Films editing facility in New Hampshire to view portions of the work-in-progress. Later this year, students will intern with Florentine Films in their New Hampshire or New York offices. The sponsorship will also deliver tens of millions of impressions for the Belmont brand upon its broadcast on PBS, along with its presence on the website, home video packaging and promotional materials for the series. Ken Burns said, “We are looking forward to this new partnership as we bring the incredible story of Country Music— covering 16 hours over eight nights of prime time television—to a national PBS audience. With its deep roots in Nashville, Belmont is part of that history—a history full of great music, great stories and great characters. We’re excited about interacting with Belmont’s students and helping the university spread the word about its programs regarding the art and the business of music.” 

Women’s Basketball Invited to the ‘Big Dance’ TEAM RECEIVES FIRST NCAA BID SINCE 2007

Women’s Basketball Head Coach Cameron Newbauer has said that his first two years at Belmont meant acquiring his sea legs. “You’re learning the ropes in terms of what type of program you’re going to run.” Newbauer’s first two seasons saw a team with strong conference play, academic excellence and a monthly commitment to community service. But the program began 2015–16 minus seven seniors who graduated, and many assumed this would be a rebuilding year with modest expectations. Newbauer had higher hopes. He believed his team was ready to make its mark. “It’s having the confidence, and instilling that in them, that we believe in them.” A mission trip to Rio de Janeiro and a strong start to the season appeared to cement that idea and strengthen the young players. But then came the test. A six-game road stretch brought six straight losses. After preaching

resolve, resilience and character all year, could this team reflect what they were hearing in practice? The women not only bounced back, they soared, winning 13 of their last 14 games of the season. The momentum swept the Bruins into the second seed in the OVC Tournament, and the team dominated in three consecutive games, winning by 8, 24 and 32 points, respectively. For the first time since 2007, Belmont women’s basketball was invited to the Big Dance, the NCAA Tournament. Selection Monday revealed that the Bruins had secured a 13 seed and would take on 4-seed Michigan State in the first round, to be played in Starkville, Mississippi in a nationally televised game. Like the season itself, the game exceeded expectations and gave the nationally ranked Spartans a scare as the underdog Bruins proved they belonged among the country’s best. Though a quick burst of points in the fourth quarter ultimately became more than Belmont could overcome, it was clear to all that this was a statement game, and a statement season, for the Bruins. A new era had begun. 

Dr. Lakisha Simmons, assistant professor of management information systems in Belmont’s Massey College of Business, and her husband Dr. Chris Simmons

(a local professor of computer science and software engineering) collaborated on the creation of the Homework Suite Student Planner, an academic planner mobile app that went live last fall. “I’ve always been interested in how technology improves our lives, and I’ve always been very organized,” said Simmons. “So when I noticed a trend of 20–25 percent of my students would miss the first few assignments of the semester, I knew that

I had to do something. My husband had the same concerns—students’ grades and performance were being impacted simply because they forgot their homework.” College students can import syllabi assignments directly into the app, alleviating the need to enter individual assignments for each class into personal calendar software. Homework Suite is free and can be accessed via Google Play and on the Apple App Store.

“Next year we are looking forward to incorporating student feedback into the app. Several students have asked for grades tracking and, if we get enough interest in that particular, we may build it into the app next summer. We couldn’t be more thrilled to use our God-given talents in our field of information technology to create an application that helps our students succeed.” 

Unusual Political Season Finds Belmont Leading with Civil Discourse Working with the voter education arm of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Belmont was one of 150 institutions nationwide that participated in College Debate 16, a non-partisan initiative to empower young voters to identify issues and engage peers in the presidential election. Under the banner #BruinVote16, Belmont students hosted numerous events in the fall including debate watch parties, voter registration drives, informative lectures and a documentary screening on civil discourse. Journalism major Riley Wallace and Belmont Professor of Media Studies Dr. Syb Brown were active participants in College Debate 2016 conferences. Wallace said, “[The program] showed the scope of how involved a college student can be within the political process, whether that’s working alongside policy-

influencing organizations, expressing ourselves through the vote or organizing events to help bring attention to issues important to us and our peers. It was powerful to consider the amount of change possible just through the students in that room.” Belmont students demonstrated more than political interest this election season—as Tennessean Opinion Engagement Editor David Plazas noted after the first presidential debate, the candidates themselves could have learned a bit about respecting alternate opinions from the Belmont watch party. “The audience comprised a racially, ethnically and ideologically diverse group of young women and men. They expressed their opinions passionately, listened intently to others and did not try to interrupt each other—or their moderator—when their ideas were challenged. These too-often maligned millennials modeled civil behavior, something missing during this presidential election.” 

Belmont University offers one of the best programs in the United States for students aspiring to launch their own businesses, according to The Princeton Review. When the education services company released its “Top Schools for Entrepreneurship,”

it named Belmont No. 23, the only school in Tennessee to be ranked. This is the eighth year Belmont has been included on Princeton Review’s list. Belmont's innovative, award-winning program enables students to get involved in one of several student-run ventures on campus and provides students with the resources and support necessary for them to start their own businesses. Approximately 3,500 square feet of prime retail space in

the Curb Event Center has been set aside by Belmont University for students to use to develop retail or service businesses. In 2016, two new student-run ventures opened in the space. The first, House Of, is a fashion boutique that features a curated group of local designers. Considering itself both a retail store and fashion lab, House Of offers collections of clothing, accessories, shoes, stationary and home goods that represent the best of emerging regional

talent. The second outlet, Boulevard Record Shop, appeals to music lovers in the area with an inventory of new and used records, record players and musical instrument accessories. Both stores reflect a hallmark of Belmont’s entrepreneurship program, giving students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in managing a small business. 

Belmont Named a Sierra Club ‘Cool School’ Belmont was named in 2016 to Sierra Club’s list of “Cool Schools,” a ranking released each year to recognize schools across the country that excel in areas of sustainability and conservation. Recognized with a “Gold” ranking, up from the previous year’s Bronze status, Belmont received its highest scores in the ranking’s Co-Curricular, Energy and Waste categories. Launched in 2015, Belmont’s “Conservation Covenant” challenges all members of the university to take care of God’s creation, a charge the institution takes seriously. It’s why Belmont serves as an arboretum to preserve more than 100 species of trees and shrubs and carefully manages water usage for irrigation. It’s also why the university builds and maintains green roofs, constructs new buildings to LEED-certified standards

and utilizes a geothermal energy system that uses the Earth’s core to heat and cool campus buildings. Vice President for Spiritual Development and Chair of Belmont’s Sustainability Committee Dr. Todd Lake said the university’s commitment to take care of what it’s been given is a core belief seen among faculty, staff and students. “For us, it’s more than recycling or participating in a car sharing program or reducing our use of plastic. The opportunity to take care of the resources God has given us is a charge we’re deeply committed to,” Lake said. “We don’t want to stop here. We’re committed to furthering our work and seeing what’s next for Belmont as it relates to conservation and sustainability.” Created to honor those schools that illustrate their commitment to sustainability, as well as their ability to make significant change across their campus, the 2016 rankings included more than 200 four-year schools from across the country. 

Bruin Time in the Community EMPLOYEES VOLUNTEER AT FOOD BANK FOR UNIVERSITY-WIDE SERVICE DAY

In celebration of Belmont’s charge to be “Nashville’s University,” faculty and staff members left campus on April 8 and found themselves sorting donated food, packing backpacks with meals and weighing meat in Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s industrialsized freezer. The annual service project, which the University dubbed “It’s Bruin Time in the Community,” began two years ago. This year Belmont employees registered to serve during one of two three-hour shifts, aligning Belmont’s vision and resources with the needs of the people in our community. Divided into three teams upon arrival at Second Harvest’s

Martin Distribution Center, one group was tasked with sorting pallets of food into specific boxes—pasta, rice, snacks and vegetables. These boxes, once weighed, were marked and prepared for shipment to one of Second Harvest’s many community partners. The next group, decked out in their winter warmest, headed for the organization’s freezer to weigh and pack donated meat. The final group took on Second Harvest’s “Backpack Program,” an initiative that provides food for at-risk children on weekends and during school breaks when other resources are not available. “Volunteering at Second Harvest allowed us to work as a group and make a tangible, lasting impact on the community,” said Residence Director Kim Kolk. “I am so glad I work for an institution that values service and allows us to fellowship together while impacting the world around us.” 

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the U.S. Department of Education listed Belmont University on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor

Roll for the fifth consecutive year. The recognition is one of the highest honors a college or university can receive for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. With community initiatives such as the Welcome Week SERVE program, organizing events annually for Family Literacy Day and being a hosting site for Room in the Inn every Wednesday and Friday evening during cold months

(November–March), Belmont was recognized in the categories of General Community Service, Economic Opportunity, Education and Interfaith. This is the first year in which Belmont has been honored in each category. Belmont’s Director of Service-Learning Tim Stewart said, “We are very grateful to receive this recognition from the President’s Honor Roll for the hard work of Belmont’s students, faculty

and staff towards our vision of being a leader among teaching universities, bringing together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. It affirms our commitment to our mission to help our students engage and transform the world with disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith.” 

operations of the group and its many subsidiaries. He credits much of his success to the time he spent at Belmont as a music business student—namely the industry professionals, faculty members and university administrators who set the foundation of his career in motion. Now, as an industry expert himself, Kautz is committed to contributing to Belmont’s music business programs and

making an impact on the students who call Belmont home. “Belmont was my extended family,” Kautz said. “It was an excellent place to grow and learn who I was, and it provided the guidance I needed to explore my passion. Since then, I have been blessed with the opportunity to do what I love every day,

we believe in Paying it Forward Modeled by our friends and alumni, Belmont builds a phil anthropic culture.

and I have Belmont and its influences to thank for that. Now, it’s my turn. It’s the faces of those who encouraged me that I remember most—I can still call them by name. It’s my honor to be a face of support for students who are now building their own careers.” 

The largest single donation in Belmont’s 126-year history was made in May by The Ayers Foundation: $15 million. The eight-figure endowed scholarship gift stems from the passion for education of Ayers Foundation President Janet Ayers and Founder Jim Ayers. Scholarships from the Ayers endowed fund will be awarded to qualified Belmont students based on financial need. Belmont President Dr. Bob Fisher said, “There are no better friends to education in Tennessee than Janet and Jim Ayers and the Ayers Foundation. Marshalling their resources in this fashion may just be the apex of their philanthropy to date, creating an endowment in perpetuity that can provide a transformative Belmont

education to individuals who otherwise may not have the financial means to attend this University.” Janet Ayers added, “The thing that excites me the most is that I hope for generations to come that every student who comes through here—wherever they come from, from whatever background—that they will leave here a changed person, empowered to know that one person at a time, one community at a time is really how you start to change the lives of others.” In gratitude for the gift and in consultation with Jim Ayers, Belmont named its largest campus building in honor of Janet. Formerly known as the Wedgewood Academic Center, the newly named Janet Ayers Academic Center stands as a beacon for campus in its highly visible site, marking the structure as a cornerstone for the University and a beautiful landmark for the city of Nashville. 

that was designed to enroll qualified, high potential students from Metro Nashville Public Schools who may not have previously been able to consider Belmont an option. The Program currently includes more than 100 Scholars who receive scholarships covering tuition, room and board, books and fees. In gratitude for their gift, a 400-bed residence hall was renamed in honor of

Joe’s parents, John and Frances Russell, who Joe credits for inspiring his success by demanding he put his education first. A first generation college student, Joe recalls, “I grew up in a family where the only question was where I would get a college education, not if. My mother and dad saw the difference between what a college degree could mean for my financial and social enhancement as well as my overall quality of life.”

Remarkable Renovation Thanks to a generous lead gift from the Jack C. Massey Foundation, Belmont celebrated in April the grand re-opening and dedication of the Massey Business Center following an eight-month renovation.

Belmont has proven itself as a phenomenal steward of its resources. Although it has continued an aggressive trajectory of growth, it has remained true to its core values.

Joe’s parents’ focus became a strong theme in Russell’s own life. Contributing to the Bridges to Belmont program connects his passion for education to his personal history in other ways, too, since he grew up in East Nashville, where he attended a public school that saw less than a fourth of graduating seniors go to college. 
