Opening doors for a transformative education requires engaging students who are passionate about their chosen field and motivated to be world-changers. Belmont attracts thousands of individuals who are drawn to that mission, intent on challenging themselves and serving others. Senior Esperance (Supé) Ndayizeye and junior Nazje Mansfield are perfect examples. The two social work majors, both Bridges to Belmont Scholars, acknowledge that, in coming from frequently marginalized communities, they have a strong desire to advocate for individuals’ emotional, physical and mental needs are met, recognizing those are the first steps toward successful futures. Born in Tanzania and raised in Nashville, Supé plans to get her masters and work in education,

noting, “I was able to see and experience firsthand the struggle that many individuals face when not given the resources and opportunities as those who are well-off, and how detrimental it could be when not addressed appropriately.” An Indiana native, Nazje is contemplating law school after graduation and a career as a lobbyist or missionary. “I want to live my life selflessly serving the disenfranchised people of forgotten communities. Belmont is aiding me in my progress toward my professional and personal goals by helping me become a better me. While in attendance here, I’ve learned more about myself than I could’ve imagined. I believe that Belmont can take me where God wants me. I believe that from Belmont, I can go anywhere.” 

More than that, the two Belmont University students, studying songwriting and music business respectively, are each proud recipients of the Miranda Lambert Women Creators Scholarship.

A two-time Grammy Award winner and reigning Academy of Country Music Female Vocalist of the Year, Lambert initiated the scholarship fund at Belmont in 2015, noting her desire to encourage and empower women to achieve their goals in the music industry. t’s difficult not to focus on music when examining how Belmont University opens doors for creativity. And when a university is located next to the famed Music Row in the heart of Music City, boasting alumni like Brad Paisley and Trisha Yearwood, it’s no wonder that Belmont and the music biz go hand-in-hand.

12

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017

2017 was another banner year for the musicallyinclined students who call Belmont home, highlighted by the songwriting program’s celebration of its first decade. With 260 current majors and nearly 200 alumni, Belmont songwriters are making an impact all across the music industry. Department Chair James Isaac Elliott explained why: “What makes this program successful are three key elements: the caliber of award-winning songwriters who teach our students, the challenging and innovative curriculum we offer and the industry partners who come alongside us in developing the next generation of great writers. Nashville has always been a songwriters’ town, and I believe Belmont is helping to both foster and bolster that reputation.” A quick walk across the campus Lawn and Quad will lead visitors from the Curb College’s Johnson Center to the historic Massey Performing Arts Center, the performance home of Belmont’s equally acclaimed School of Music. This year, music students were singing their hearts out in Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center alongside singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow, who joined the annual “Christmas at Belmont” performance as a special guest artist. The concert’s national broadcast wasn’t the only bright spot in a year filled with significant performances. Tony Award-winner Levi Kreis came home to Belmont to receive his long-awaited commercial music degree, and graduate student James Matthews saw his dream of a solo recital at Carnegie Hall come true. Of course, creativity

isn’t confined to simply what’s heard at Belmont. The visual arts are also ever present. Art students contribute their inspiration daily and experienced it in a unique way in 2017 with “The Conceptualizer” exhibit from award-winning graphic designer and Belmont faculty member Dale Addy. Moreover, all of Belmont’s innovative faculty incorporate imagination into everything they do, one of many reasons Belmont is consistently praised by U.S. News & World Report for its commitment to undergraduate teaching. Business students demonstrated their originality through an Entrepreneurship Village and numerous startup business pitch competitions, while humanities majors explored the fluid concepts of “home” in a fall symposium. Even Belmont President Dr. Bob Fisher was recognized by the Nashville Business Journal as a “Trendsetter.” A favorite example of our faculty’s ingenuity from the past year? Look no further than the BELL Core general education series with a Learning Community Course that linked creative writing with a class on health and fitness concepts. Students researched the relationship between the mind and body, learned about labyrinths and pilgrimages and made interactive walking guides for various Nashville parks. Professor of English Dr. Bonnie Smith Whitehouse said, “I think writers spend way too much time in front of screens. That’s not historically how writers have composed, and we need to remember that. Creation is a great place to create! I love getting to show my students that through the learning community and through getting their bodies and their minds engaged.” 

Progress doesn’t simply happen. It must be intentional. It must involve commitment, investment and even some risk-taking. At Belmont University, such consistent striving for excellence and innovation continues to be a major driver behind the University’s success to date. Just this year, Belmont’s extensive health sciences simulation program earned full accreditation from the international Society for Simulation in Healthcare, making Belmont the first program in the state to reach the designation. With an emphasis on early access to patient interaction, Belmont’s program promotes clinical reasoning and critical thinking. Hailing from Decatur, Georgia, senior nursing major/dance minor Haley McDaniel first experienced the SIM labs in her Introduction to Nursing course, allowing her to become accustomed to being at patients’ bedsides. “Simulation labs have continued for me every semester following, progressing yearly in skill level and complexity of the mannequin… These technologies, compounded with small class sizes and debriefing after every simulation experience, have given me the

chance to learn in a real-life environment with accurate response times from patients.” Dr. Beth Hallmark, assistant professor and simulation director for the College of Health Sciences & Nursing, is quick to add that while the technology effectively replicates clinical practice, students’ real progress in their field—and the desired educational outcomes—most often emerges in the reflective debriefing. Belmont uses an evidence-based method, Debriefing with Good Judgement, from the Harvard Center for Medical Simulation. “While our mannequins are critical to our program, we feel that consistent faculty training, designing simulations to meet our course and program objectives and effective debriefing techniques allow the students to see simulation as a safe place to be evaluated and learn. ‘Simulation’ is not the technology or the equipment but is a pedagogy that, when used effectively, is very powerful and gives our students an advantage as they move into their professional roles.” 

t Belmont, a commitment to innovation can be seen throughout each of the University’s 10 colleges. Emphasizing the power of progress and remaining on the cutting edge of trends across higher education, Belmont faculty and staff are committed to ensuring students have access to transformative experiences that will sculpt their future careers.

Understanding where learning best happens— often at the edge of a traditional discipline or at the intersection of several—Belmont’s Interdisciplinary Academic Thinking Team was established this year as an outgrowth of the University’s Vision 2020 plan to provide more opportunities for students to engage in collaborative learning across disciplines.

Opening doors to empower student progress requires thoughtful and intentional steps, a roadmap for the future. Belmont’s Vision 2020 plan has provided just that. Beyond the interdisciplinary courses, Belmont is making tremendous progress on its strategic priorities. Increasing Study Abroad and international missions opportunities for students, engaging with the local community by hosting political forums and taking steps to strengthen the BELL Core general education curriculum are just a few of the many areas of tangible advancement. As a Christian university committed to environmentally sound practices, Belmont was also recently named as the No. 9 Top-Performing Master’s Institution for Sustainability in 2017 by the Chronicle of Higher Education and was named in the Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges. With three academic buildings that have achieved LEED certification, multiple green roofs across campus and an arboretum to preserve more than 100 species of trees and shrubs, the University was also recognized as a 2017 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award recipient, the only higher education institution to be honored. 

As one example, in the College of Sciences & Mathematics students are provided with many opportunities to engage in meaningful research, studies that have the power to change the course of medicine, nutrition, biology and beyond. Equipped with impressive lab resources, students join their faculty members in asking important questions—and seeking important answers. From those participating in Belmont’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (SURFs) to those engaging with research through their coursework, students partner with faculty and peers to complete projects that point towards progress in countless areas and assist in their preparation as budding professionals.

Three resulting courses—an introduction to data science, a study of sustainability and the intersection between trauma studies and social development— will be offered in the coming year.

Two individuals are constantly thinking about how Belmont University can best impact and influence its local community. Director of Community Relations Joyce Searcy and Director of Service-Learning Tim Stewart operate within the many points of connection between Belmont’s campus, surrounding neighborhoods and the city at large. Named a Leading African American in Nashville, Searcy brings years of advocating for community causes, not to mention a litany of local relationships, to the table in her work for the University. Thanks in part to her bridge building, Belmont increased its involvement in the nearby Edgehill neighborhood and partnered with the city to renovate Rose Park. She’s also fostered relationships that prompted the local Minority Caucus, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Nashville Tech Forum and a young women’s leadership

academy to meet on campus this past year, among many others. Searcy and Stewart frequently work together as “opening doors for the community” often means reaching out for opportunities to serve. As part of Belmont’s mission, students are challenged to engage and transform the world throughout their time on campus and beyond. That focus begins with SERVE, a Welcome Week event that places incoming freshmen and transfer students at local nonprofits for an afternoon of volunteering. Stewart, who has led many of Belmont’s service initiatives for more than a decade, said, “The opportunity to serve within students’ first few days on campus is so important because it sets the tone for their time on campus. We believe that service is an integral part of who we are—it’s the Belmont way.” 

Class act. It’s a phrase that describes countless members of the Belmont community, but in this instance, it’s directed at senior women’s basketball player Sally McCabe, who was named a semifinalist for the national 2017–18 Senior CLASS award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. McCabe more than fits the bill as the two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year who also boasts a 3.84 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in psychology. She also spends countless hours serving as a mentor and camp volunteer, and she plans to pursue her M.A.T. in elementary education. “It’s been an unbelievable four years,” she said, “and if I could do it over and over again, I would choose Belmont every single time.”

Choosing to be a Bruin goes beyond the satisfaction women’s basketball has seen on the court, winning the conference championship and going to the NCAA tournament the past two years. McCabe’s college contentment is driven by the support she receives from faculty and staff across the institution, like Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator Renee Schultz. An alumna herself, Schultz can testify to the many ways Belmont opens doors to a vibrant campus life, making the University truly feel like home. Though originally from Washington, Schultz earned a B.A. in sociology and a M.Ed. in Sports Administration from Belmont before joining the Athletics staff in 2003. Clearly, while Belmont’s tagline may be “From Here to Anywhere,” it’s obvious that the atmosphere built at this University makes it a difficult place to leave. 

ollege life certainly includes ample whiteboards, group discussions and rigorous academic lectures, but it’s also important for students to be challenged to acquire knowledge beyond the curriculum. Belmont fosters a vibrant campus life to empower holistic development of students’ social, emotional and leadership skills. That begins with a dynamic and intentional residence life experience. With the University’s enrollment expansion in recent years, from 2,976 students in 2000 to more than 8,000 now, keeping pace with on-campus living spaces is a priority to ensure undergraduates can live near where they learn. In fact, Belmont recently celebrated the topping out of what will be its largest residence hall to date, housing more than 600 students once it is complete this fall.

Of course, Belmont Athletics also provides the campus with plenty to cheer for as well. In addition to the outstanding season from women’s basketball, coming within three points of the Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament, Belmont softball earned its first-ever post-season appearance with a 35-22 record overall, the most wins in the team’s Division I era. It’s only appropriate to see the women shine as Belmont celebrates the 50th anniversary of women’s sports on this campus. In fact, members of Belmont’s first women’s basketball team, founded in 1968, returned this fall to share memories of their experiences. Trailblazers all, former player Mattie Spicer Yokley recounted her love for Belmont, a community she and her teammates described as family. “You don’t get any better than B OA STS Belmont,” she said. “There is no place on the planet like this school… This is heaven.” 

The past year offered the opening of a number of new facilities to serve student life outside the classroom, chief among them being the newly renovated Gabhart Student Life Center. In addition to providing additional meeting space for student organizations, the Gabhart Center now unites a number of student service areas near the center of campus including Belmont Central, the Registrar’s Office, Spiritual Development/University Ministries, Campus Security and Student Financial Services. Moreover, the University’s new Office of Multicultural Learning and Experience is located in the space. Other campus improvements from the past year include new practice rooms for student musicians, a renovated campus retail site and an innovative BELMONT partnership with The UPS Store at Belmont to provide mail services to the campus, the first-of-its-kind hybrid store partnership for the retail giant.

An aesthetically beautiful and functional environment creates the “place” needed for a vibrant campus life, and Belmont then provides countless clubs and activities to meet the needs of any student’s interest. This fall students were able to participate in back-to-back major events on The Lawn when a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse passed over Nashville on August 21 and then the University hosted its annual Battle of the Bands and Family Fun Festival the following weekend. Beyond drawing thousands to campus to witness both events, the eclipse also opened the doors for Belmont faculty to share their expertise nationally as physics professors Dr. Scott Hawley and Dr. Davon Ferrara were interviewed by CNN and Fox Business Network, respectively.

The idea of diversity and cultural competency is a hot topic across higher education, and frankly, throughout society in general. How can campuses enrich their environments when conversations on the subject matter are, at the very least, uncomfortable? Though it is never easy to know what to say (or not say) about race, ethnicity, sex and gender issues, three Belmont Pharmacy faculty tackled those topics head-on last summer in front of their peers at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy national conference. Drs. Edgar Diaz-Cruz, Hope Campbell and Angela Hagan, along with colleague Dr. Lakesha Butler from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, used short films and group discussions to explore whether “diversity” is celebrated or truly integrated into pharmacy programs, and the response from the packed house was tremendous.

The presentation was so compelling, in fact, that their dean (who happened to be in attendance and has long served on Belmont’s Welcome Home Diversity Council) asked the trio to consider creating a similar program that could be shared with the entire campus. Diaz-Cruz, Campbell and Hagan accepted the challenge, and in 2018, every employee at the University is being asked to participate in workshops the trio developed focused on inclusive excellence and cultural proficiency. The initiative intends to push the door for inclusive excellence open even wider as all faculty and staff explore the ideas of cultural humility, implicit bias and sensitivity in small group settings. 

A Nashville native, Milton Johnson has always understood the power of philanthropy. While attending Stratford High School, he worked multiple jobs to help his single mother as she supported the family. After graduation, he went on to attend Nashville State before earning a scholarship to attend Belmont College, a dream that didn’t always seem feasible. As a young alumnus, Johnson became a Belmont donor—just $5 a month—because he believed in the importance of education and of giving back. His commitment to supporting Belmont has never wavered, and now, as Chairman and CEO of HCA (Hospital Corporation of America), Milton and his wife Denice continue to champion the transformational power of a Belmont education.

Just a few years ago, the Johnsons presented the University with a $10 million gift to endow the Bridges to Belmont program, an initiative that enrolls graduates from four Metro Nashville Public Schools, including Stratford. Seeing so much of himself in the Bridges to Belmont scholars, Milton is especially interested in “paying it forward” and opening countless doors of opportunity for hundreds of students across the city. “My Belmont scholarship was a life-changing experience for me,” he said, “and we want other Nashville public high school graduates to have the same opportunities at Belmont. We want these students to know that Belmont believes in them—we believe in them—and there are no limits to what they can achieve in life.” 

Thousands of donors supported Belmont this year through their contributions to the We Believe Campaign, taking the comprehensive fundraising effort past the halfway mark of $150 million. And many more created new opportunities for students through the establishment of scholarships including the Andrew Marshall Dorff Memorial Fund, the National Music Publishers’ Association S.O.N.G.S. Foundation Songwriting Endowment and the Thom Storey Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship created in honor of the late Media Studies Chair and Professor. Still other individual and corporate donors have gotten involved with the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame, which provides scholarship support for

students studying health sciences at Belmont while also honoring the state’s health care legends. While many gifts directly support students through scholarships, others provide meaningful experiences to broaden perspectives. For example, the James B. and Lois R. Archer Charitable Foundation serves as the presenting sponsor for The GIG, providing support to undergird the museum’s operation, special projects and educational programming. The Archers have previously endowed funds for the Curb College Pipeline Project, a nine-member student team that gathers each summer as a think tank that seeks creative solutions for the entertainment industry. Meanwhile, students in Belmont’s College of Health Sciences and Nursing have received many opportunities through the support of the Memorial Foundation, a long-time University benefactor. The Foundation has gifted Belmont more than $2 million in the last 20 years. In recognition of the late Founding President J.D. Elliott’s life and his dedication to the University, Belmont named its pediatric/obstetric simulation lab in his honor this year. It’s this spirit of giving, generosity and selflessness that has crafted the Belmont community over the last 127 years. With so many generous supporters focused on opening doors of opportunity for students across campus, the student experience has grown more and more meaningful each year. This dedication, this belief in the power of providing valuable experiences to students, continues to remind the Belmont community of the importance of service, opportunity and philanthropy. 

elmont University’s campus is filled with opportunities for students to engage in meaningful experiences— experiences that have the power to change the course of their lives. Partnering with faculty on research projects completed in state-of-the-art labs, being mentored by entrepreneurs-in-residence and performing in countless theatre and musical productions are just a few of the avenues students can take to expand their expertise outside classes. Plus, through semesters spent studying abroad, short- and long-term mission trips and internships in New York City, Los Angeles and beyond, Belmont students are consistently provided with outstanding educational opportunities off campus as well. And it’s the generosity of so many Belmont alumni, employees, parents and friends that opens the doors to these experiences every day through continued gifts to the University.
