Program Notes
Acaze is a piece about transformation. The beginning solemn section represents us in discomfort, not happy with who we are. We then work towards our goal, and find in ourselves who we want to be, hence the key change.

Redshift Redshifting occurs when wavelengths are lengthened, and therefore colors appear closer to the red side of the spectrum. It is similar to the Doppler Effect in which sound can be altered based on speed and direction it is coming from. This piece plays with that idea, of speeding up and settling in, and also the idea of being out of sync and adjusting to be together.

Les Tulipes (French, meaning tulips) features flute, violin, viola, cello, and piano. The instrumentation is inspired by Romantic-style piano quintet, which would include all these instruments except for the flute, favoring a second violinist instead. The piece is centered around the tulip, one of nature’s most beautiful flowers, and its symbolic meaning in the Victorian language of flowers (la langue de fleurs). In this secret language, tulips represent a declaration of love between romantic partners. This piece seeks to capture the essence of joy, hope, and connection associated with the tulip. The piece is organized into three sections, each representing a stage of life for the tulip during the spring season. The most notable sections are the first and second sections. The first section showcases the versatility of the piano, violin, viola, and flute as they play the main theme of the piece. The second section displays the unique color and timbres of each instrument in the ensemble. Amuse-toi bien!

String Quartet No. 1 This is a string quartet that I have worked on occasionally for the last year. It breaks the string quartet conventions in that every movement is in a different key and the tempo changes drastically within each movement. It is a quartet of continual harmonic and rhythmic change. I tried to explore the string techniques and articulations such as tremolo, pizzicato, staccato, slurs, etc.
In the first movement, I wanted to introduce my lively theme with a slow opening reminiscent of a sunrise. Once the main theme comes in the instruments participate in a dance where they in turn ask musical questions and answers. In the middle of this fast movement suddenly comes a Largo passage, a complete change of mood for only 45 seconds, but a passage that I consider the most beautiful in the whole quartet. In the second movement, I employed the use of a canon by introducing the theme in all the instruments at different times. The third movement comes forth with a burst of energy with a lively theme. The most drastic change is when halfway through this movement the time signature changes from 4/4 to 6/8, only to later return once more to 4/4 and the original fast theme.

side quest! is a fun and lighthearted piece for a small percussion ensemble. The drumset and marimbas set up a nice bossa nova groove, which the vibraphones play on top of with a melody that sounds almost improvised. The happy sound continues for most of the piece until a sudden change occurs perhaps this simple side quest is not as simple as it initially seemed, and now a monster has blocked the way forward. As the imaginary battle progresses, the music slowly builds itself back up, eventually arriving back where it started, completing the quest.
Program notes by Miriam Marks, composer
Sail features both the vibraphone and piano in a high-energy, adventurous, yet hopeful duet. This piece includes many rhythmic and melodic challenges, as well as cascading “waves” of notes. This piece is an attempt to be optimistic about the journeys we embark on in our lives mostly chaotic, sometimes bittersweet, but a constant search for what we want to achieve.
