THE BELMONT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF SCIENCES & MATHEMATICS The College of Sciences & Mathematics at Belmont University provides world-class undergraduate instruction in the areas of Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Psychology and Physics. Through a combination of excellent teaching in small class settings and state-of-the-art research opportunities, we prepare students for careers and graduate study in a wide variety of scientific fields including the health sciences. Over 50 percent of the students graduating from the College each year go on to graduate study in mathematics, science or health science, while over 35 percent obtain jobs in their field of study. Our College specializes in educating undergraduate students in the sciences and mathematics. Classes and teaching labs are taught by faculty members, over 90 percent of whom hold terminal degrees in their field. Class sizes are typically between 20–25 students at the introductory level and smaller at the advanced level. For classes with an associated laboratory, faculty teach both the lecture and lab components of the class. Learning about science and doing science, while complementary, require different skill sets. We believe that the best way to integrate knowledge and develop the critical and creative thinking skills needed in today’s world is through participation in original research. All students are provided the opportunity to engage in faculty-mentored research during their academic career, and a vast majority conduct at least a semester of research. Those students not engaged in research participate in other experiential activities like internships and studyabroad programs. Research opportunities within the College have been greatly enhanced with the completion of our new Janet Ayers Academic Center. The College now boasts dedicated research space with state-of-the-art instrumentation, all of which is used regularly by our students. While much research is conducted during the academic year, the College also provides summer research opportunities through credit-earning and stipended programs.

Welcome to the College of Sciences & Mathematics at Belmont University. The College, which includes the Departments of Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Mathematics & Computer Science and Psychological Sciences, is dedicated solely to undergraduate instruction in the sciences. Our college is housed in Belmont’s new $78 million Janet Ayers Academic Center, which boasts modern classrooms, well-equipped teaching laboratories, dedicated undergraduate research space and state-of-the-art instrumentation facilities. All of these spaces are designed to provide our students with opportunities to engage hands-on in the sciences through teaching labs and original research projects. Whether you are interested in a career in the sciences or a related field—such as health science or technology—graduate programs and employers alike are looking beyond coursework for critical thinking, communication, leadership and problem-solving skills students develop by working independently on an original research question. Belmont’s College of Sciences & Mathematics combines excellent instruction in a small classroom setting with a strong liberal arts curriculum and opportunities for all students to engage in research, equipping students with the skills that make them competitive for employment or graduate study at the national level. Please take the time to explore our website to learn more about our programs of study and stop by our Facebook page to see up-to-date information on student activities and accomplishments. I think you will find that the College of Sciences & Mathematics at Belmont is a welcoming place where students with a strong interest in science can learn about and engage in science while building a strong foundation for a future career. Thomas Spence, Ph.D. Dean, College of Sciences & Mathematics

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH Undergraduate research is a critical component of a modern collegiate education in the sciences. Only by working on original research problems can students develop the creative and critical thinking skills needed to function as independent scientists. The undergraduate research laboratory provides students the opportunity to develop a research question, conduct research and become experts in a field of study. In short, a research experience allows students to engage in, rather than simply learn about, science. Our students typically conduct at least two semesters of research and have the opportunity to present their findings at national or regional scientific conferences as well as at the annual Belmont Undergraduate Research Symposium. Undergraduate research opportunities expose students to the culture of scientific research and the wide variety of career paths available within a particular discipline. The college supports a variety of opportunities for students to engage in research during the academic year and during the summer. Two summer research programs, one for-credit and one offering a stipend, afford students the opportunity to engage in research projects over 6–10 weeks in a wide variety of disciplines. Belmont has recently renewed the commitment to undergraduate research through the construction of the Janet Ayers Academic Center. This new structure contains state-of-the-art research space, including 10 new undergraduate research labs and a world-class set of instruments for use by students. We encourage you to visit our website to learn about our current undergraduate research opportunities and contact us if you have any questions about our program or career paths in the sciences.
