DUAL DEGREE JD-MBA

COLLEGE OF LAW AND JACK C. MASSEY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

GIVE YOUR LAW CREDENTIALS EXTRA BUSINESS APPEAL

Prepare yourself for a role as practitioner, executive, or manager in the legal and business industries.

The JD-MBA is a dual degree program offered cooperatively by Belmont University College of Law and Jack C. Massey College of Business. This innovative program provides a unique opportunity to obtain a cutting-edge education in law and business. During the fall and spring semesters enrolled students focus entirely on JD required courses. Students begin MBA course work in the summer term by enrolling in four graduate business courses. MBA courses are available in the evening in a variety of formats – in person, online, or a mix of the two. This flexible evening schedule in summer allows students to participate in daytime career opportunities to build their law and business resumes. Students lacking business prerequisites can attend Summer Business Institute prior to the start of law school.

“Legal advice and business advice have opposite fundamental purposes. At its core, an attorney’s primary role is to protect a business from unnecessary risk or make the business aware of risk and mitigate the same. The role of businesses is to generate a return to its shareholders, which inherently involves risk. This is the fundamental friction between business and legal objectives. The benefit of understanding both business and legal ‘languages’ at a fundamental level is that you can understand where your client is coming from and what is driving their decisions.”

“I am currently a Mergers & Acquisitions associate specializing in state and local tax. I thought the dual JD/MBA program fit very well together in terms of curriculum and appreciated that the program allowed for flexibility, so I was able to take courses that catered to my interests. For example, I was pursuing a career in tax and both schools worked with me so I could use some of my tax courses for credit as various electives.”
