2017
welcome! Welcome to Belmont! We are honored and excited to have you on campus for our Summer Orientation Program. The Towering Traditions Orientation Program is designed to help you navigate the transition into the Belmont community. Towering Traditions is about the legacy and the life of Belmont University. It is about tradition. Tradition reminds us that being a Belmont Bruin is bigger than any of us. It starts with the thousands of Belmont students who have gone before you—students who dared to dream bigger, who committed to serve faithfully, and who understood the privilege, honor and responsibility of living life under the Tower. As representatives of the Towering Traditions (TT) orientation program, we carry on this legacy. But it is not just about the past; it’s also about the present. It is about life under the Tower. Life Under the Tower is about service, creativity and exploration. It is about bringing your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. It is about giving back and making the world a better place. It is about you discovering and developing your gifts in order to better serve the world around you. It is about you investing in your education to step more fully into the person God has created you to be. Life Under the Tower is about a community of learners, explorers and encouragers. Life Under the Tower is layered with curious scholars, inspiring creatives, soon-to-be nurses, teachers, lawyers and innovative entrepreneurs. Life Under the Tower is the life you are entering. Towering Traditions is the beautiful combination of Belmont past and present. It helps us appreciate the rich legacy of our past while we’re living out our present and preparing for our future. We know such a transition can be filled with emotions and excitement for what the next chapter holds. As veterans of the Belmont community, we could not be more excited for the journey that is before you. We have witnessed the beauty of Life Under the Tower, and we can’t wait for you to join the community!
Welcome to Belmont! Ryan Holt Director, New Student Orientation Programs
TOWERING TRADITIONS 2017 | 1
meet the orientation council JESS SABO Senior, Music Business | St. Charles, MO I grew up in St. Charles, Missouri, and lived in the same house my entire childhood. Before Belmont I had never enjoyed being away from home (especially from my family), but as soon as I met my Resident Assistant and roommate, I knew that I belonged here. In high school I never felt fully accepted by my peers. At Belmont, the parts of me that weren’t valued in high school are constantly affirmed and celebrated. My hope for each of you is that you fall in love with your life as you begin the Belmont chapter of your story! DYLAN ARNDT Junior, Music Business | Bryan, TX My junior year of high school, I was set on going to school in my home state. I toured Belmont and all of my perceptions about what I wanted in college changed. My fears of attending a small, relatively unknown private school were completely resolved as soon as I stepped on campus. Belmont immediately welcomed me with a spirit of inclusivity and energy. Because of the supportive teachers, academic integrity and welcoming community, I know that this is where I am supposed to be. My hope for all of you is that you find the same sense of home that I did. Welcome to Belmont! REID EDINGTON Senior, Music Therapy | Clarksville, TN I always knew that I wanted to come to Belmont because of its small size and Christian commitment. I was accepted, and a few months before Summer Orientation I auditioned for the School of Music. I instantly fell in love with my major and found a group of people who shared my passion for service and the power of music. Even though I am close to Clarksville, the intentional and inclusive community here made me feel as if I never left the security of home. I hope that you feel this same wholehearted acceptance and importance from this transformative community. MILAN NOLEN Junior, Music Business with Music Vocal Performance and International Business | The Woodlands, TX I grew in a suburb outside of Houston, Texas. As my senior year progressed, I decided that I wanted to go to college for Classical Voice Performance. As I researched vocal programs, Belmont appeared on every list. However, as my freshmen year unfolded I decided to switch my major. I have discovered a campus with supportive faculty, along with loving friends who encourage me as I pursue my passions. I challenge you to be brave throughout this transition, pour yourself into this community, and always be open to the exciting opportunities that are about to come your way. TAYLOR BROWN Junior, Church Leadership & Administration | Battle Creek, MI Hailing from Battle Creek, Michigan (the birthplace of breakfast cereal!), I made my decision to go to Belmont two days before the May 1st Decision Day deadline. I’ve constantly been affirmed in that decision through the incredible people I’ve met, the outstanding experiences I’ve had and the empowering classes I’ve taken. I believe that God has brought you here for a reason, and I encourage you to remember that if you find yourself questioning your college decision. 2 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY
CHRISTINA READ Junior, Entertainment Industry Studies and Religion & the Arts | Houston, TX I grew up in Houston,TX, and first heard about Belmont when I was looking to audition for the Musical Theater program. However, when senior year finally rolled around, I decided to attend Belmont and pursue a degree in Entertainment Industry Studies. The community I’ve found at Belmont is unlike anything I have ever experienced: a community of unconditional love, endless support and honest celebration of who we are as individuals in Christ. I am so excited to help you dive in and find your place here in the Belmont community! KEVIN QUINLIVAN Senior, Economics | Cincinnati, OH I grew up in a small town on the Ohio/Indiana border. Belmont was the only school that I ended up applying to! After a semester here, I realized my first major of Audio Engineering Technology was not for me and switched to Entertainment Industry Studies. Fast forward to the fall of my junior year, when I switched again to major in Economics. Throughout each of my major changes, I have continually been encouraged by faculty, staff and my fellow students to grow spiritually and challenge myself academically. I cannot wait to help each of you find your place here during this transformative season! ANNIE PFOST Senior, Corporate Communications Major, Music Minor | San Clemente, CA When I first started applying to college, I had never even heard of Belmont. After a suggestion from a guidance counselor, I knew I had to apply. I arrived for my Commercial Voice audition, and the friendly community and beautiful campus reassured me that this was where I was supposed to be. Even though I have since changed my major and future plans, Belmont has remained my steady and stable home. Our goal, as an Orientation Council, is to ensure that you can feel this same sense of home and community that we are so fortunate to have. JAMES STINNETT Junior, Finance | Amarillo, TX I grew up in the Texas panhandle, and always thought that I would wind up going to school somewhere in state. I came to Nashville my junior year of high school, and any plans I had previously made in my head went out the window! Despite being miles from home and in an unknown city (and not having a musical bone in my body), I have found my home in this wonderful community, and am so excited to welcome you in. My hope is that you feel known and valued as you enter into this new season of your life. EVA SIPIC Senior, Music Therapy | Commack, NY When I began my college search my sophomore year of high school, my mom was convinced that I would attend a state school in New York; I had other plans. As soon as I stepped foot on campus for a Preview Day, I knew Belmont was the place I needed to be. Every part of my Belmont experience so far has been nothing short of amazing, and I’m so excited to see how yours will unfold in the next few years.

academic planning The second day of orientation is all about selecting and registering for fall classes! We know how excited you are, but we also know you may be a little stressed out about such a big step! We have you covered. Here are some answers to questions you may have about this all-important day. What should I do to get ready for my second day of Summer Orientation? No preparation is required. You will be led step-by-step through the advising and registration process by people who have done this many times. Our primary goal is to help you select and register for the classes you need at times that work well for you. That said, below you will find resources for additional information if you are curious now about your academic options. What do I need to bring with me? Your BU id number. Your password for your MyBelmont account. Something to write with.
> > >
What advising tools are available on the Belmont website? The primary advising tools are DegreeWorks and ClassFinder, and both are accessed through your MyBelmont account. ClassFinder lists all available classes and times for the upcoming semester, and DegreeWorks lists your personal degree requirements based on your declared major and minor. How do I find my DegreeWorks and Classfinder? To access DegreeWorks: Login to MyBelmont > click on Registration (left hand column of page) > click on DegreeWorks (student) To access Classfinder: Visit classfinder.belmont.edu or Login to MyBelmont > click on Registration (left hand column of page) > click on Classfinder
> >
Do I need to look at ClassFinder and DegreeWorks before the second day of Summer Orientation? On the second day, you will be guided through the advising and registration process, so do not feel pressured to examine these resources. Choosing classes is not difficult, but it can feel overwhelming when you are unfamiliar with the process. Our goal is to make this initial registration session as stress-free for you as possible!

registering for classes FAQ How will I know what courses to register for my first semester? You will be directed to your Academic College on Day 2 of orientation and during this session you will be advised on what courses you will need to take for your first semester at Belmont. How many classes do I need to take my first semester? Usually students take 12–16 credit hours their first semester. This typically equates to 4 or 5 classes. Most classes you will take your first semester are 3–4 credit hours each. (Music majors will be slightly different and will be advised accordingly.) What if I have taken AP/IB/Dual Enrollment credits? Where do those apply? You will have the opportunity to ask where your credits will apply when you meet with your Academic College for course planning/registration on Day 2 of orientation. If you’d like to take a look beforehand at our list of AP/IB credits we accept you can visit: www.belmont. edu/catalog > Undergrad Catalog > Academic Policies > Alternative Credit Programs > Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate. Who is my academic advisor? You will be assigned a primary academic advisor by August 18—prior to the start of the fall semester. You will be notified of who your advisor is via your Belmont email. Your primary advisor’s name will be the first one listed in the advisor section in DegreeWorks. Will I meet with my academic advisor on Day 2 of orientation? You will most likely be advised in a group setting on Day 2 of orientation. There will be faculty and professional staff advising experts in your Academic College session that will guide you on the courses you need to take and how to register for these courses. You will likely not meet with your primary academic advisor during this time. When will I get to meet one-on-one with my academic advisor? You will meet individually with your primary academic advisor during the fall semester to plan your second semester of courses and discuss your academic plan towards the path to a successful graduation at Belmont. ...............................................................................................................................................................................................................
