Program Notes
I wrote Pieces of a Dream to address the limited repertoire available for large guitar ensembles, particularly pieces that engage students in an educational and musically rewarding way, mixing classical and commercial music traits. Written for nine players, the piece is arranged for six classical guitars, an electric bass, a steel-string guitar, and an electric guitar. The composition draws from diverse influences, including fugato writing, minimalism, jazz, and funk. Utilizing diatonic and pandiatonic techniques, Pieces of a Dream departs from traditional functional harmony, presenting unique harmonies and textures such as quartal structures and triads with added notes. Inspired practices of both classical and popular music it includes improvisation and a refined sense of ensemble playing. This work challenges players to explore new harmonic realms and layering techniques, enriching their ensemble experience. I hope you enjoy!

Robert Thompson would like to provide thanks to Dr. Oliveira for sharing his music with the class and for the extra teaching he provided on his composition.
