Director’s Note
Shakespeare’s Hamlet might be read as a play about irresponsible parenting, broadly speaking: Hamlet’s uncle kills his father and marries his mother and then Hamlet’s father’s ghost charges Hamlet with cleaning up the mess, based upon no more evidence, initially, than the accusation of a ghost. The current climate crisis might also be read as one of irresponsible parenting: older generations reaped the benefits of industrialization leaving younger ones to bear the burden of global warming. Recent years have seen a rise in rates of depression in young people, and Hamlet is a famous melancholic. So, we have taken Hamlet as our inspiration to explore depression in the young in the face of global warming, for the collaborative, devised movement piece you will see today, with projections and music.
