I am honored to lead this incredible journey into the world of opera with our scenes program “Vices and Virtues.” Through our carefully curated selection of scenes, we aim to provide our students and audience with a comprehensive understanding of this intricate art form. Opera is not just about love stories and fairytales; it is a profound reflection of the human experience, encompassing both vices and virtues. The students have learned and discovered that through the power of music and storytelling, we can uncover valuable lessons about humanity and ourselves. Kindness, is exemplified in the story of the naughty child in L'enfant et les sortilèges, and we delve into the consequences of deceit through in Don Giovanni, while exploring the intricacies of frivolity in the delightful world of The Merry Widow. "Vices and Virtues" serves as a platform for both artistic expression and moral exploration. We are excited to have you join us tonight, and hope that the students’ hard work and superb storytelling, foster in you a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted world of opera. -Dr. Savanna Sokolnicki, School of Music Faculty
