2019
Welcome! We are honored and excited to have you on campus for our Summer Orientation Program. The Towering Traditions Orientation Program is designed to help you navigate the transition into the Belmont community. Towering Traditions is about the legacy and the life of Belmont University. Tradition reminds us that being a Belmont Bruin is bigger than any of us. It starts with the thousands of Belmont students who have gone before you—students who dared to dream bigger, who committed to serve faithfully and who understood the privilege, honor and responsibility of living life under the Tower. As representatives of the Towering Traditions (TT) orientation program, we carry on this legacy. But it is not just about the past; it’s also about the present. Life Under the Tower is about service, creativity and exploration. It is about bringing your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. It is about giving back and making the world a better place. It is about you discovering and developing your gifts in order to better serve the world around you. It is about you investing in your education to step more fully into the person God has created you to be. Life Under the Tower is about a community of learners, explorers and encouragers. Life Under the Tower is layered with curious scholars, inspiring creatives, soon-to-be nurses, teachers, lawyers and innovative entrepreneurs. Life Under the Tower is the life you are entering. Towering Traditions is the beautiful combination of Belmont past and present. It helps us appreciate the rich legacy of our past while we’re living out our present and preparing for our future. We know such a transition can be filled with emotions and excitement for what the next chapter holds. As veterans of the Belmont community, we could not be more excited for the journey that is before you. We have witnessed the beauty of Life Under the Tower, and we can’t wait for you to join the community!
Welcome to Belmont! Ryan Holt Director, New Student Orientation Programs

TOWERING TRADITIONS 2019 | 1
MEET THE ORIENTATION COUNCIL ALYSSA SEEFELDT | Senior, English and Education Libertyville, IL Like many people, I have my mom and the big book of colleges to thank for steering me in the direction of Belmont. When I visited for the first time, I was overwhelmed not only by hot chicken, but also how the people on this campus treated me like they had already known me for three years and loved every part of me. Years later, I am lucky to say that feeling stays with me within my major and the organizations that have become my home here on campus. I am so excited for you to experience the magic that is Belmont University! Welcome into our family! BEN ROGERS | Senior, Nursing and Economics | Nashville, TN After dreaming of different careers, applying to eleven universities, and changing my major seven times, I have realized that it’s okay not to have everything figured out! I finally landed on Nursing and Economics and, as one of the few people at Belmont who hails from Nashville, TN, I could not be happier to have chosen to stay in my hometown for college. Every day, I get to see another person’s perspective of this city and experience it through new eyes. Through academics, Greek Life, Towering Traditions, and other groups at Belmont, I have experienced communities that have lifted me up and encouraged me in my endeavors. CATHERINE CECCOLI | Senior, Music Business | Cincinnati, OH Coming to study Music Business in the heart of Nashville, I fell in love with how Belmont fosters a community where students can share their passions with others and be celebrated for all of the things that make them unique! As a member of various on-campus organizations, I have been able to build a network of both faculty and fellow students that are nothing but supportive of my interests and goals. Life at Belmont has challenged me and transformed me into the best version of myself from the first moment I stepped foot on campus, and I pray that this community does the same for you. Welcome to Belmont! ALEX MILLER | Senior, International Business Colorado Springs, CO I am originally from the beautiful state of Colorado, and I never thought I would leave my home state for college. But once I visited Belmont, I was instantly captivated by the overwhelming sense of community on campus and the city of Nashville. I also am a part of the Men’s Track and Field team. Although I was fearful of falling back into the “athlete” typecast, Belmont is a place where you can come and be anything and everything you want. Belmont has become my home away from home, and I cannot wait for all of you to fall in love with the magic of this place. WILL GILMORE | Senior, Audio Engineering | Oak Park, IL Growing up in Oak Park, Illinois, I never thought I would move to Nashville. I fell in love with recording music and my band director said I should look at Belmont University. I found my home in the Audio Engineering Technology program, where I was able to combine my musical prowess and technological curiosity to record, mix, and master music for other people and myself. Everyday I walk across campus and see the faces of people who show me what it means to be caring, empathetic, and true to yourself. I can’t wait to see you among those faces! 2 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY
CALLIE DURHAM | Senior, Design Communications Clemson, SC After spending the first 18 years of my life in a small college town, I knew that I wanted a different college experience. Thanks to some guidance from one of my older siblings, I decided that I would spend the next four years at Belmont University. I am currently a Senior Design Communications major and have the pleasure of being involved in Towering Traditions, Greek Life, and University Ministries. Belmont has given me a special place to foster genuine friendships and I cannot wait to welcome you all into this family! CAMERON PRESSON | Senior, Religion and Communication Thompson’s Station, TN It’s only a thirty-minute drive south on I-65 from Belmont to my home in Thompson’s Station. My dreams of attending a smaller university with good people and the opportunity to study theology at a Christian university all routed back to Belmont. I’ve found many different homes here: working with special needs in Best Buddies, getting involved in campus ministries, and serving students through Towering Traditions. If you’re wondering, “Will I find my home here?”, I can answer that for you: yes. It’s just a matter of which community on campus you invest in, and maybe a little patience too. Welcome home, Bruins! AMANDA WOLFGRAM | Junior, Audio Engineering | Plano, TX Like many of you, I decided to come to Belmont for the fantastic Music Business major. Being involved in the Curb College helped me discover a new passion for production, which ultimately led me to change my major, so I can pursue my dreams of editing sound for film. Be open to all of the opportunities that Belmont has to offer, because the possibilities are endless. Belmont wasn’t originally what I had in mind for myself, but I am beyond blessed to say that I have found my home at this school and in Nashville. I hope you will feel the same way soon! Welcome home y’all! ERIC RIVERA | Senior, Music Business | Lockport, IL Bienvenidos! I come from a bi-cultural immigrant family from the southwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. I never saw myself coming to Nashville, but after being involved with Greek Life, the Curb College, and Cheerleading, I can say I have found my new home. I encourage you to be brave as you find yourself here and lean on those around you. Take the chance to keep an open mind and walk through every door of opportunity that is presented. I hope this university changes your life as much as it has changed mine. MADDIE HINKLE | Senior, Nursing | Naperville, IL Welcome! Growing up partly overseas and partly in the suburbs of Chicago, I never pictured myself at a small Christian school in Nashville. But the Lord somehow got me here and each experience I have had here has shaped me into a truer version of myself. Belmont is a place where stories are celebrated, where dreams are encouraged, and where faith is grown. This school has given me amazing hands-on nursing experiences, strengthened my leadership skills, and grown my faith. I encourage you to lean in to each opportunity and get ready for a beautiful journey in this next chapter of your life.

ACADEMIC PLANNING The second day of orientation is focused on your preparation for classes in the fall! This is an exciting time as you begin to map out your first semester at Belmont! In order to ensure your success, below is a list of answers to common course registration questions. What should I do to get ready for my second day of Summer Orientation? No preparation is required. You will be led step-by-step through the advising and registration process by people who have done this many times. Our primary goal is to help you select and register for the classes you need at times that work well for you. That said, below you will find resources for additional information if you are curious now about your academic options. What do I need to bring with me? Your BU ID number Your password for your MyBelmont account Something to write with
> > >
What advising tools are available on the Belmont website? The primary advising tools are DegreeWorks and ClassFinder, and both are accessed through your MyBelmont account. ClassFinder lists all available classes and times for the upcoming semester, and DegreeWorks lists your personal degree requirements based on your declared major and minor. How do I find my DegreeWorks and Classfinder? To access DegreeWorks: log in to MyBelmont > click on Registration (left hand column of page) > click on DegreeWorks (student) To access Classfinder: Visit classfinder.belmont.edu or log in to MyBelmont > click on Registration (left hand column of page) > click on Classfinder
> >
Do I need to look at ClassFinder and DegreeWorks before the second day of Summer Orientation? On the second day, you will be guided through the advising and registration process, so do not feel pressured to examine these resources. Choosing classes is not difficult, but it can feel overwhelming when you are unfamiliar with the process. Our goal is to make this initial registration session as stress-free for you as possible! REGISTERING FOR CLASSES FAQ How will I know what courses to register for my first semester? You will be directed to your academic college on day two of orientation and during this session you will be advised on what courses you will need to take for your first semester at Belmont. How many classes do I need to take my first semester? Usually students take 12–16 credit hours their first semester. This typically equates to four or five classes. Most classes you will take your first semester are 3–4 credit hours each. (Music majors will be slightly different and will be advised accordingly.) What if I have taken AP/IB/Dual Enrollment credits? Where do those apply? You will have the opportunity to ask where your credits will apply when you meet with your academic college for course planning/registration on day two of orientation. If you’d like to take a look beforehand at our list of AP/IB credits we accept you can visit: www.belmont. edu/catalog > Undergrad Catalog > Academic Policies > Alternative Credit Programs > Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate. Who is my academic advisor? You will be assigned a primary academic advisor by August 18—prior to the start of the Fall Semester. You will be notified of who your advisor is via your Belmont email. Your primary advisor’s name will be the first one listed in the advisor section in DegreeWorks. Will I meet with my academic advisor on day two of orientation? You will most likely be advised in a group setting on day two of orientation. There will be faculty and professional staff advising experts in your academic college session that will guide you on the courses you need to take and how to register for these courses. You will likely not meet with your primary academic advisor during this time. When will I get to meet one-on-one with my academic advisor? You will meet individually with your primary academic advisor during the Fall Semester to plan your second semester of courses and discuss your academic plan towards the path to a successful graduation at Belmont. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................... ...............................................................................................................................................................................................................
