2016

welcome! Welcome to Belmont! We are honored and excited to have you on campus for our Summer Orientation Program. The Towering Traditions Orientation Program is designed to help you navigate the transition into the Belmont community. Towering Traditions is about the legacy and the life of Belmont University. It is about tradition. Tradition reminds us that being a Belmont Bruin is bigger than any of us. It starts with the thousands of Belmont students who have gone before you—students who dared to dream bigger, who committed to serve faithfully, and who understood the privilege, honor and responsibility of living life under the Tower. As representatives of the Towering Traditions (TT) orientation program, we carry on this legacy. But it is not just about the past; it’s also about the present. It is about life under the Tower. Life Under the Tower is about service, creativity and exploration. It is about bringing your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. It is about giving back and making the world a better place. It is about you discovering and developing your gifts in order to better serve the world around you. It is about you investing in your education to step more fully into the person God has created you to be. Life Under the Tower is about a community of learners, explorers and encouragers. Life Under the Tower is layered with curious scholars, inspiring creatives, soon-to-be nurses, teachers, lawyers and innovative entrepreneurs. Life Under the Tower is the life you are entering. Towering Traditions is the beautiful combination of Belmont past and present. It helps us appreciate the rich legacy of our past while we’re living out our present and preparing for our future. We know such a transition can be filled with emotions and excitement for what the next chapter holds. As veterans of the Belmont community, we could not be more excited for the journey that is before you. We have witnessed the beauty of Life Under the Tower, and we can’t wait for you to join the community! So show up—by bringing your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. The foundation has been laid, and now you have the honor of joining the legacy. You are part of Belmont’s 125 years of educational excellence. You are a part of Towering Traditions.

Welcome to Belmont! Ryan Holt Director, New Student Orientation Programs

meet the orientation council ZAYNE ANDERSON Senior, Entertainment Industry Studies | Rockford, IL I am from Rockford, Illinois, and I stumbled across Belmont’s website one fine afternoon and realized this was the school for me. I applied, and the rest was history. I found my home at Belmont through Greek Life, which led me to this wonderful TT community. I am honored to be a part of this loving community, and I am so stoked to have the opportunity to help you find your place at this wonderful university! KATHRYN DICKENSON Senior, Psychology | Visalia, CA I grew up in the charming city of Visalia in the central valley of California. I heard about Belmont through my aunt, who had attended Belmont for her undergrad. Tennessee isn’t super close to California, so I didn’t get the chance to visit Belmont before deciding to come here. I fell in love with Belmont at Summer Orientation, and I continue to fall in love with this place and the people in it more and more everyday. It is with great honor and gratitude that I get the opportunity to introduce you to this wonderful place and the beautiful people that make it so. SCOTT FRENZEL Junior, Music Business | Cincinnati, OH Hailing from the barely-northern Cincinnati, OH, I first discovered Belmont when I googled “music schools,” and after stepping on campus and feeling the uplifting and collaborative community of Belmont, I knew that it was the place to be. I found a home in the Belmont Bridge Builders, a faith & sexuality group, and in Greek Life. I was so thankful for my Orientation Council because they immediately alleviated all my fears and helped me dive head first into all Belmont has to offer. I hope I can do the same for you! TERRANCE GULLEY Junior, Marketing | Rockford, IL I was born and raised in the wonderful city of Rockford, Illinois. Although I originally planned to attend college for musical theatre, as my senior year of high school progressed, I realized that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Luckily my number one choice for musical theatre, Belmont, also had a great business program! I hope that in this crazy time of transitioning to college, the other members of the 2016 Orientation Council and I can show you the love that was shown to me by the wonderful people at Belmont University! JOE LAMARTINA Junior, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology | St. Louis, MO I have lived in St. Louis, Missouri, all of my life. When I was choosing where I wanted to go to college, I knew that I wanted to go somewhere in the South. I visited Nashville and fell in love with the city. When I visited Belmont, I knew that it was the perfect place for me. I felt at home, and I felt that Belmont and the people here cared about me. I have never been someone super musical, but I have always loved listening to music. I fell in love with the music atmosphere at Belmont and in Nashville. I am incredibly excited to welcome you to Belmont and help facilitate your transition as a member of the 2016 OC!

2 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY

HANNAH MAHALAK Senior, Music Business | Chelsea, MI I first visited Belmont in December of 2012 on the way to Florida with my parents. It was the only school I applied to, and I was beyond ecstatic to begin my journey. I’m from a small town right outside of Ann Arbor, MI. I wasn’t used to the big city of Nashville, but the Belmont community showed me this is exactly where I was meant to be. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to serve on the 2016 Orientation Council. I cannot wait to show you all the same warm welcome and to kick off the start of your journey here at Belmont! Welcome home. Welcome to Belmont! WILL POTTER Senior, Audio Engineering Technology | Grove City, PA I am from a small town in western Pennsylvania. I came down to Belmont with the vague notion of becoming a folk singer, but when I got here, I was taken in a whole new direction. I am and always have been a huge nerd. I like to joke that I’m more “student” than “college.” At Belmont I found a community of professors and students that empowered me to question more boldly, to understand myself more effectively, and to serve others more fully. I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve on the 2016 OC and am stoked to be able to welcome y’all into this wonderful community! MARE ROTE Senior, Social Entrepreneurship | Racine, WI I grew up in Racine, Wisconsin. All three of my older sisters went to Belmont, and I swore I would never do the same…but when I saw the campus my senior year of high school, I knew it was where I belonged. By serving on the 2016 Orientation Council, I want to help all of you discover that this is where you belong as well. Belmont’s community is full of love and laughter. It is accepting of everyone exactly as they are but will also encourage you to grow into the truest version of yourself. Get ready for some of the best years of your life. WELCOME TO BELMONT! MADI SHULTZ Junior, Corporate Communications | Cross Plains, TN I grew up in a small town in Tennessee that consists of a four-way stop and three monogramming shops. Needless to say, Nashville was a big change of scenery. But on March 13, 2013, I knew Belmont was supposed to be my home. The genuinely kind and welcoming atmosphere I experienced on my Admissions tour that day has been affirmed time and time again in my two years as a student. I am so honored to serve on the 2016 Orientation Council and to see you continue your stories at Belmont. God has blessed me here, and I cannot wait to see how Belmont blesses all the new students and parents as well. JULIA WERMUTH Senior, International Business | Mequon, WI Descending from the icy tundra of Mequon, Wisconsin, fueled by a passion for music and people, I knew it made sense to visit a place like Belmont, but I had no idea just how incredible a small campus in the middle of a big Southern city would be. A little comment from Dr. Fisher sealed the deal on my acceptance and proves to be a guiding ideal throughout my collegiate journey: “college is about finding who you are. But, ‘who you are’ isn’t about you at all.” My heart beats faster as I close my eyes and imagine how each of you will impact the world and those who inhabit it, taking your talents and strengths to serve others “from here to anywhere.”

Academic Advising

Remember that YOU are responsible for your degree program, but you complete that responsibility by using all of the resources available to you. One of your PRIMARY resources is your ACADEMIC ADVISOR. Advising is a complex relationship that can take many forms. Some advisors depend on the student to know the degree requirements and want to focus on the mentoring relationship. However, other advisors focus on ensuring that you are taking every opportunity to learn and grow. If you find your advisor has a different definition of the relationship than you desire, talk to him/her about it or find someone with whom you develop that special bond. Your advisor has information and experience that may not be available from other sources. He or she can advise you as to the best semester to take certain courses or of opportunities beyond the classroom that can be critical to your success.

Topics to Discuss with Your Advisor

>

Classes and/or experiences you really want to have while in college: It could be Study Abroad or internships; it might be faculty-assisted research or leadership opportunities on campus.

>

Talk about your academic background: What have been areas of strength for you? Do you have any academic concerns? Are there things about college courses that absolutely frighten you?

>

Plans for your future: If your advisor knows where you want to go, then he or she can help you identify ways to achieve those goals.

It is important to remember you have four years. You will grow and change in significant ways! Compare the person you were as a high school freshman and who you are today—now multiply that change by at least 10-fold. Make plans but ALWAYS BE OPEN TO OPTIONS. Just be deliberate about the options. TOWERING TRADITIONS 2016 | 23
