‘Table / land’ Single family house 2009 - Oostduinkerke - Belgium Actual situation:
A residential allotment from the early sixties filled with “bungalow” houses, surrounded by dunes, not far from the Belgian seaside (2 km).
Design: The original site slopes a full level down to the rear of the garden. Therefore we wanted to work with a platform, a table/land, which allows the surrounding terrain to stay naturally rough.The concrete basement serves as a plateau for the main living areas, seemingly floating over the landscape. On the other side it is embedded in the gardenscape and connected to the street level. The plateau covers a carport situated on the lower basement level. The ramp with concrete staircase leads to the entrance serving 2 studios with bathroom and shared kitchen. The studios each have a courtyard providing air and light. All interior and exterior living areas are organised on the table land, plateau. The house itself is inspired by the bungalow typology: at first glance it looks like a single storey house. From the street one is lead to the main entrance gate. A monolithic concrete wall provides privacy for both the bungalow and the terrace in between.
Materials: Typical “bungalow” materials in a contemporary context: wood, glass, concrete.

Table / Land - Oostduinkerke Behind the wall ( 2009- 2010)
‘Filtered Home’ Reconversion single family house 2006-2008 Kapelle-op-den-Bos Belgium Actual situation: Commercial ground floor with 2 apartments.
Design: Transformation of 2 apartments into a single family house on top of a commercial groundfloor. The house is situated next to the village’s main square and church. Because the roof terrace on the first floor is visible from this square, a new screen is made of a range of white vertical steel leafs placed in different angles. The people on the terrace are offered a view on the square, the view in the opposite direction is made impossible. The steel construction carries the roof structure above. The greenhouse on the flat roof behind this screen is demolished in order to make place for a new extension. An entirely glazed volume is designed to house the kitchen providing a close relation with the outside space. The kitchen island is continued outside. A new staircase connects this roof terrace with the garden below. The entrance hall on the ground floor level is repeated on the floor levels above. The narrow staircase leads to the open plan living area on the first floor. On the second floor it leads to the bedrooms and multipurpose area.

‘Ar + light ’ Single family house prototypes in 3 stages of energy efficiency: E60 - E40 - E20 from low energy to passive house 2010 Belgium Design : All concepts for an energy efficient design are incorporated in the design: * Optimal implantation and orientation: all living functions face east, south en west orientation * Thermal insulation * Airtight construction * Compact design (maximum of interior space for a minimum of exterior surfaces) * Carefulness in the design for the technical installations The spatial design downstairs emphasizes an open living space around a closed core for the vertical circulation, the pantry, toilet and cloakroom. Big windows connect the exterior with the interior livingspace. Upstairs 3 large bedrooms bathe in light through large windows.

‘Artificial Landscape’ Renovation of a single family house, extension with workshop and office space 2007 Middelkerke - Belgium What Actual situation: Large semi detached house along the canal Bruges - Veurne.
Design: A building contractor wishes to renovate his private home and at the same time build a workshop with office space for his construction company. The difference in height and level between the front and the back of the existing house allows the design of a multipurpose and open working area on the basement level. The office is situated in the back in order to create a stunning view on the surrounding meadows. According the function underneath the ceiling heights vary, creating a sloped flat roof serving as a large garden for the private house on the ground floor above. A staircase connects the garden and living area with the office.

‘Flash/house’ Single family house, new construction 2007 Ghent - Belgium What Actual situation: Large plot of land in a residential allotment surrounded by other houses on all sides.
Design: An exceptional plot of land demands an estranged object contrasting with the typical housing typology. A big black cube is positioned in the centre in order to hide it from the street and neighbours peeping in, to maximize the garden and optimize the orientation. The windows and views outside are carefully selected. The living area is organized in a multiple storey open space. The circulation, vertical and horizontal, is meandering behind, around and along closed volumes holding the storage and cloakroom an the ground floor, the bathroom on the first floor and bedrooms on the second floor. Along this architectural promenade the client can put on display his large poster collection.

‘Model apartment’ Refurbishment apartment 2007-2009 Ghent - Belgium Actual situation:
An apartment on the second floor of a typical fifties apartment block, alongside the “Leie” river in the historical centre of Ghent (B).
Design:
Demolition of typical division in small rooms in order to create a wide space for living. The seating, dining and cooking area are organized into one fluent space in which curved walls guide and define these zones. This living area continues in the master bedroom with adjacent semi-open bathing area. The apartment has a total length of +/- 21 m back to front. From the one end in the master bedroom the view is directed towards the windows in the front façade looking over the river. The linear ceiling lights guide this spatial sequence and create a totally different atmosphere at night. The main living and sleeping area bask in a white colour palette. Mirrors on the wall of cupboards widen the space. The other spaces (shower room, spare room, entrance with cloakroom) are painted in soft colours (blue, pink, yellow), contrasting with custom designed furniture in dark oiled oak. The wall colours are repeated in these cupboard interiors. The insides are dark blue, pale blue, old pink or dark yellow. Photography : DSP fotografie

‘My little Castle’ Single family house, extension 2007 Willebroek - Belgium What Actual situation: Large plot of land along a railroad track and the river “Rupel”.
Design: The owner loves watching the stars at night and wants a perfect spot for his telescope. A monolithic tower is designed with a roof terrace on the top, accessible through an outside staircase sculpted into the tower volume in natural stone. This staircase starts from the balcony next to the master bedroom on the first floor. On the ground floor the base of the tower houses the new kitchen next to the renovated living area.

Location : Beveren – Belgium Actual situation: New allotment for social housing. Competition for 6 parcels. Design: Exterior: Aiming for simplicity in timeless architecture. Row house typology with guarantee for privacy due to the in between garages. Architectural unity and serenity through repetition, allowing individual choices however e.g. for the stucco texture and entrance door colour that can be repeated in the interior. fInterior: Maximization of open living area around a closed core with storage space on the ground floor and the bathroom on the first floor. Maximal flexibility in organization around this core: each owner can choose the position of the eating and living area according to his personal preference (garden or street side). Maximal flexibility in materials: standard ceiling in wooden beams and standard floor in concrete can be customized by each owner individually.

‘To Willeke’ Single family house, new construction 2009 - 2010 Ranst - Belgium What Actual situation: Small terrain in a village centre.
Design: A compact volume is designed within strict urban regulations. The living spaces are organized around a central core on 3 floors, following the principal of Russian matryoshka dolls. A small house is hidden within the main volume in order to enclose the most private functions such as storage and toilet on the ground floor, bathroom on the first floor and studio in the attic. The eating and dining area, and bedrooms are spacious and filled with light through large windows. Materials are carefully selected in order to respect a tight budget: structural elements are visualized and constructed without hiding: wooden beams, concrete ceiling, unplastered masonry, steel beams, etc.

‘Living in Exile’ Single family house 2009 Oostduinkerke - Belgium What Actual situation: Sloped lot of land between two roads at a short distance from the Belgian seaside in a residential area. A protected nature park with dunes is situated across the road. This plot of land is the only one in the neighbourhood where the natural geography and vegetation has been preserved and has remained untouched by human hands.
Design: In order to comply with urban planning regulations the house is designed to look like an ordinary Flemish house with gable roof from one side, while from the other side it is cantilevered above the slope in order to create an impressing view of the dunes, and at the same time to protect it from curious looks inside from the road beneath. The orientation and the view to the nature park determine the direction of the interior walls and the spatial organization. The roofs angle is similar to the slope. An outside space next to the master bedroom is cut out of this gable roof. A big void connects this roof terrace with the patio on the first floor. This patio is the core of the living area: it separates and interconnects the different functions (cooking, dining and sitting room). The natural vegetation (sand, grass and low shrubs) is drawn inside. The land around the house is preserved with its natural vegetation. The colour palette of the dunes and sand have inspired the choice of materials with its natural colours.
