} With Christmas fast approaching, why not treat a special Pompey fan in your life with a Pompey Christmas gift. One such gift is the book Bury My Heart At Fratton Park: Supporting Portsmouth 1947-2008, which has been written by Pompey fan and university professor Geoffrey Fry. Geoffrey said: “The book is available at amazon. com and the paperback edition costs £6.88, while the kindle edition costs £6.54. My nine academic books were the reason I made it from the Fratton End to being a university professor, but these books remain unread by millions. This will be the fate of my book on Portsmouth too, but I would like my fellow Pompey supporters at least to know of the existence of Bury My Heart At Fratton Park. The price is set very low to encourage purchase. Once the taxman calls, I will make no money anyway.” For many Pompey fans the 2013-14 season will be the first time that they have seen the club in the fourth division, although Geoffrey remembers the last time Pompey were at that level. He said: “When Pompey were relegated to the then fourth division in 1978, it took us five seasons to make it to the then second division. It was tough going, believe me.” Geoffrey’s book is divided into two parts. Part one is titled Supporting A Major Club: Portsmouth 1947-56, and part two is titled Supporting An Ordinary Joe Club: Portsmouth 1956-2008. The book covers a memorable period in Pompey’s history, including winning the first division title in the 1948-49 and 1949-50 seasons, the plummet down the leagues to the fourth division, the rise back up the leagues, and the FA Cup triumph at Wembley in 2008. Geoffrey has supported Pompey since 1947 and has plenty of fascinating stories about the club, so if you know anybody interested in the history of the club then this will be the perfect Christmas present for them.

stakeholder interview A nna M i t che l l }What does your job involve and how have you been working with Portsmouth Football Club? My job role is marketing and communications AM at a company called Maritime Group, and my background is in sports so I push on in the sports world. Our company is a leader in LED solutions in sports, commercial and also mobile hire, and we’re working in partnership with Portsmouth Football Club to enhance their matchday experience using LED solutions, and stage one was to put a brand new 20sqm screen in the Milton End.
Did you come to the club or did the club approach you? club approached us, they saw one of our AM The screens at Torquay United and were really
impressed and gave us a call and we came down and had a chat and we were really keen to work with such an ambitious, forwardthinking club. We then had to come up with a deal that was affordable to the club and that we (Maritime Group) could afford to deliver. We believe in working in partnerships, so we want to build a long-term partnership with the club. We hope the digital screen will generate income for the club and add to the matchday experience by streaming engaging content, as well as offering businesses the opportunity to advertise via the screen to the fans, so it basically opens up a new revenue stream for the club. The digital screen will act as a scoreboard, and a clock which will be shown throughout the game on a banner on the the screen. It will also stream live footage of the match with intermittent adverts, and they actually come up on the full screen.
11
Are the adverts scheduled to happen when there is not much happening in the game? Yes they are so when there are certain AM stoppages and injuries that is when we will go to the full page adverts, and also during half-time and post-match. The screen is very flexible, it’s basically like a giant TV so you can stream whatever content you like, so we can stream player interviews and also messages from the fans as well. It is also possible to stream live Twitter messages and stream an interview straight after the match on the pitch, so it just depends how far the club want to take it. It’s also a bit of a learning curve as well as it has just started and it has the possibility to grow.
We’d like to get the LED boards in by the end of the year and work has already started
The digital screen went in for the Exeter game, are you pleased with it? It went in for the Exeter game, but we had a AM few problems with the install in terms of the old screen. Because of the nature of being close to the coast the old screen actually corroded, so it took a lot longer than we first anticipated to take it out. The saltwater of the metal work had corroded, and because it is such a tight base you couldn’t get to the part that had corroded so easily, and you couldn’t use any cutting gear because of the nature of being in a stadium and the risks to surrounding seats. Once we managed to cut the old screen out causing minimal disruption, we could then get the new screen up in a matter of days.
campaign or an Easter campaign, they can advertise that. The advertisers who have already paid this season will be transferred across, and both the club and us (Maritime Group) will go out and sell advertising so hopefully we’ll get some national brands to purchase an advert. The LED perimeter boards can also have animated messages, which are much more engaging to the fans. If there is a goal we can have a goal graphic that can run all the way across the perimeter so it adds to the matchday experience, which having attended a match is an unbelievable atmosphere here already.
Which match did you come to? So the big screen was step one, are there plans for step two? Step two is LED perimeter boards. It’s the AM club building back up, it’s a great club and the people here, especially Micah Hall, have so much ambition, so it’s a breath of fresh air to be working with such an ambitious, forward-thinking club. We’d like to get the LED boards in by the end of the year and work has already started. They will be in the North Stand and it will probably be a run of 60 metres. They would replace the boards that are already there and then the static adverts would become digital adverts, so instead of having one static message for the season advertisers have the flexibility to change their message and refresh it. For example, if a business is changing a product, or they’ve won an award, or they have a Christmas
12
The Exeter match, which was a great one and a AM great win. It was a really good game. I came down and I was Micah Hall’s assistant for the day so I was virtually following him around, and it was interesting to spend a matchday with him. He’s a very busy man.
Presumably you want to see how the North Stand goes before putting LED perimeter boards in the Fratton End and Milton End? Definitely, you’ve got to make it commercially AM viable, so although it’s a massive club with huge ambition and great support and you know 16,000 people turn up day in day out for the matches here, we need to make sure that advertisers are willing to spend sufficient amounts on League 2 football, which

we’re confident they will but we obviously need to demonstrate it. For us as a business because we work with quite a few sports clubs what we can do is bundle the advertising in as a package, so you’ll be able to buy advertising at Exeter Chiefs rugby, BBL basketball and various other clubs. For example, we work in rugby, football, basketball and netball, and we’re also big in cricket.
So that’s the next plan, are there any other plans?
The club is in League 2 at the moment and has massive crowds for that league, but if the club is able to get promoted to the Championship presumably that will attract more advertisers?
Is there anything else you would say about your relationship with the club?
Yes I would say it would attract more AM advertising. More advertisers in turn brings more revenue so then you can look at putting bigger screens in so you’ve got more screens in the stadium and more LED perimeter boards, and you can really maximise sales revenue from those additional advertising spaces.
There’s plenty of various, clever LED products AM out there that we are currently investigating to see how viable they would be to come to Fratton Park. We’re looking into it, the possibilities are endless and like I say it’s about building a long-term relationship with Portsmouth Football Club.
Considering where the club was at the end of AM last season and that it is a new management team here that have only been in place since May, I think they’ve achieved a lot and delivered a lot of projects in such a short period of time. It’s been six months and you’ve got a new big screen, concourse TVs, and a fabulous website, and a small amount of people delivered it so it’s phenomenal really.

} I’ve always been one that bucked the trend. When Tory Health Minister Edwina Currie once declared that eating eggs carried a risk of salmonella poisoning, I ate them by the box, poached, scrambled, fried and boiled. At the height of mad cow disease I feasted on corned beef, boiled beef, beef Wellington, beef burgers, roast beef and cold beef. And unsurprisingly this unhealthy over-consumption of beef and eggs left me both totally uncontaminated and sane. So in one of a few winters of discontent around this time occurring during 1974 it may not surprise readers to know that I was blissfully contented. Winter 1974 was the year the miners brought down the Edward Heath Tory-run government by weeks of power strikes which left the country without electricity at key times of the day.

Consequently most evening football matches during this period were suspended and moved to the afternoon. For a schoolboy with sympathetic parents including a dad who introduced me to the delights of Fratton Park seven years earlier, afternoon football was manna from heaven. Therefore when Pompey’s third round FA Cup replay at Swindon was switched to a Tuesday afternoon, it was a double bonus. A day off school, and the best possible one when the timetable this day contained the equally detested morning cookery lesson and the afternoon science one. Given that I was never destined to be either a future Jamie Oliver or follow in the footsteps of Albert Einstein I wasn’t exactly being educationally deprived missing them. In all honesty considering Pompey were trailing 3-1 with 12 minutes left in the first encounter at Fratton Park, this game
The goalless draw against a Terry Brisley-inspired Orient meant another Tuesday afternoon encounter at Brisbane Road in an FA Cup run turning into the stuff of dreams to the detriment of my culinary and scientific instruction.
Hero Bobby Kellard sealed a tremendous 3-3 comeback with a 90th-minute penalty
And so it looked destined to run and run as 90 minutes and extra time failed to settle a 1-1 score-line leading to a third replay at Crystal Palace. But horror of horrors Selhurst Park had its own generator which meant a third replay could revert back to time honoured evening. Never one to be deterred I persuaded the school youth club leader to run a trip, for which we actually filled two coaches as the winter of 74 rumbled on endlessly.
probably had no right to go to a replay in the first place. Perhaps these things are destined.
Kellard’s personal FA Cup quest continued with another unstoppable drive past Orient keeper John Jackson, but the real fun came when Ron Davies hit a second three minutes from the end sealing a 2-0 win.
And destiny indeed knocked when my boyhood hero Bobby Kellard sealed a tremendous 3-3 comeback with a 90thminute penalty that seemed to take an eternity to roll through the mud and past goalkeeper Jamie Allen.
The moment 10,000 Pompey fans who had defied a torrential 90 minute downfall in an open end departed from their incessant chanting of chimes to break into a united rendition of Gene Kelly’s ‘Singing in the Rain.’
Consequently the enormous surge of freedom I felt as I made the five minute walk to school only to carry on straight past the gate the following Tuesday morning was immense.
It was as good as it got. Pompey went out 1-0 in the fifth round at Nottingham Forest, around the time Edward Heath’s government went to the country and lost, and the miners subsequently reached agreement.
The school uniform remained hung in the wardrobe as I strolled past Oak Park Secondary School attired in resplendent blue bowler hat with PFC painted in white letters, decorated further with my treasured silk scarf tied round it. I can vividly remember seeing the cookery teacher’s distinctive orange mini drive through the gates as I passed which only added to my feeling of emancipation.
As the daffodils began to peep through normality and spring yawned preparing to rise and burst into life. For almost everyone a bleak winter of discontent was coming to its conclusion. For me, bucking the trend to the end, it was a marvellous winter wonderland that I wanted to go on and on.
Judging by the coach I boarded from Fratton Park I wasn’t the only kid in town playing unofficial hooky for the day. On a perfect winters afternoon I witnessed my first ever Pompey away victory against a Swindon side that contained one Frank Burrows in their defence. Kellard was the man of the moment again with a pile-driving strike that this time whistled rather than rolled past the hapless Allen to seal a 1-0 win. This would lead to Pompey’s fourth round FA Cup tie against Orient which became the first ever game played at Fratton Park on the Sabbath in front of more than 30,000.
Most evening football matches during this period were suspended and moved to the afternoon
Kellard’s remarkable personal cup year continued when he gained the doubtful kudos of being the first player sent off on a Sunday.
