Haute Ecole Lucia de Brouckère Master’s in Industrial Engineering Sciences: a highly practical course that integrates research and the needs of the industrial world
by Offset5
Registered in the “Technical” department of the Haute Ecole Lucia de Brouckère (HELdB) and taught at the Institut Meurice, this university-level course runs over 2 cycles. The first 3-year cycle, which leads to a degree entitled "Transitional Bachelor’s in Industrial Sciences", gives students the necessary general scientific and technological knowledge to deal with the complex subjects that face engineers, in addition to entrepreneurial skills. The second 2-year cycle leads to the grade of "Master's in Industrial Engineering Sciences" and the title of Industrial Engineer in the Biochemistry and Chemistry paths.
In the Biochemistry path, the student has the option of specialising in three different branches: Food Industry; Biochemical and Brewing Industries; Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (the only course of its kind in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation). The Chemistry path offers two different branches: High polymers, paints and coatings; Chemical analysis and environmental engineering.
This high quality, highly technical course has a particular focus on practical skills: cutting-edge technological equipment allows the illustration and implementation of theoretical concepts (laboratories, seminars, consultancies, inspections etc.). It also stands out through its educational support: the groups of students are on a human scale and are backed up by lecturers who offer regular adapted and personalised improvement sessions. In addition, research is an integral part of the course thanks to the speciality sessions given by experts from the world of research. The associated Research Centre (Meurice R&D) allows students to integrate R&D projects during their studies (internships or dissertations). The Master’s course in Industrial Engineering has in addition been able to adapt to the development of the industrial world as testified by the creation in 2008 of the “Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology” option (with speciality modules such as vaccinology, protein purification methods, animal cell cultures etc. that are given by guest professors from the professional world) in response to the growing demand from businesses in the biomedical sector. Lastly, this course offers internships and graduation work in companies or abroad: England, Ireland, France, Germany, the US, Canada, Ecuador, Japan etc.
The doors of the industrial sector are open wide to graduates from the Industrial Engineering Master's course. In the pharmaceuticals and agri-food, chemical and energy, decontamination and waste processing sectors, the engineers of the Haute Ecole Lucia de Brouckère contribute to research and development for innovative products and processes that comply with applicable environmental standards; supervise production chains and quality control checks; guide the optimisation of processes and the management of pilot units, or specialise in sales and management etc. Similarly, some of our students continue their education with a doctoral thesis or additional Masters, for example in management or environmental management.
Today the Industrial Engineering course is confronted with the astonishingly rapid developments of technology in the industry. This is a change that needs to be followed up and integrated into the programmes in the form of active technology watches in partnership with alumni and industrial contacts. In addition, the Haute Ecole Lucia de Brouckère makes an active effort to promote the job of engineer by emphasising their contribution to society (for example in the field of ecology) alongside their technical and scientific aspects. Scientific workshops and conferences also make it possible to tell students about the many fascinating openings in a wide range of truly fulfilling studies!
