RENAULT TRUCKS TOMORROW'S WORLD TODAY WORKING ALONGSIDE CUSTOMERS AND THEIR CHANGING ENERGY NEEDS

Contents

In a world where power is ever-present and needed for everyday activity, electricity is essential. The need for electricity today has almost tripled in 30 years: who doesn't have a mobile phone, tablet, fridge, etc.? That's why Renault Trucks is designing cabs with an increasing number of options and comfort levels to provide high quality driving. Living space is taken up by electrical equipment that is energy-intensive, significantly increasing the demand for electricity.

Renault Trucks BATTERY GUIDE

ENERGY SYSTEM ENERGY CYCLE The starter motor turns over the engine using electricity supplied by the battery. The engine drives the alternator which supplies all the vehicle electrical functions and recharges the battery. The energy cycle components are paramount and the smallest fault can lead to breakdown and the vehicle being kept off the road. 1

Alternators, starter motors and batteries are designed and developed by Renault Trucks to operate perfectly in this cycle. To maintain best performance, it is essential to replace these parts with genuine components.

!

When the engine is stopped, the battery continues to supply the electrical equipment that is still switched on and discharges. Remember to switch off equipment that is not required.

BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS ROLE An energy and power storage tank that is used to: Start up the vehicle via a starting current measured in Amps (A). Supply energy to electrical devices when the engine is not running. This is the capacity given in Amp hours (Ah).

RELIABILITY CRITERIA Resistance to vibration. Resistance to charge/discharge: cycling. Power for starting. Storage period

BATTERY COMPOSITION OPERATING PRINCIPLE (ELECTROCHEMICAL) The battery is made up of lead plates and an "electrolyte" solution. This is necessary for the electrochemical reaction to produce electricity. Lead is a significant part of the performance of a battery because it affects the number of cycles and can provide the current necessary to ensure start-up. COMPOSITION (MECHANICAL) The plates are assembled in a sealed case and maintained using separators designed to withstand high vibrational stress (surface profile, engine vibration, position on the chassis frame).

+

30% MORE RESISTANCE WITH RENAULT TRUCKS PLATES

!

Renault Trucks specifically reinforces and tests its battery plates and separators according to precise criteria. No competing battery can meet the same requirements. With a poor separator, the battery will be less resistant to short-circuits (risk of breakdown and vehicle downtime).

Example: At 0°C the battery only supplies 2/3 of its nominal power and the engine requires one and a half times its nominal starting power. When cold, conductivity is reduced, battery internal resistance increases and the current is altered. Demands on a weak battery are even greater. It becomes more difficult to drive the moving parts of the engine.

!

The battery comprises chemical elements that are sensitive to the cold.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE LIFESPAN OF A BATTERY DISCHARGE DEPTH

ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FAILURE

INTERNAL SULPHATION OF THE PLATES Energy system

TEMPERATURE

TEMPERATURE EFFECT ON STORAGE A charged battery that is left unused will gradually become discharged. The higher the ambient temperature, the quicker the discharge.

06 07

Check the charge indicator regularly if there is one. Keep the battery constantly charged at a high level. Recharge the battery prior to each storage period.

DISCHARGE DEPTH The succession of charge/discharge cycles corresponds to normal wear of a battery. Premature wear happens when an undersized battery is fitted for the electrical power consumption of the vehicle and its use (tail lift, on-board comfort accessories, etc). In the case of a lead battery, deep discharges rapidly shorten its lifespan. Optimum power is no longer restored due to the loss of chemical elements, sulphation of the grids, etc.

SOLUTIONS Fit a battery with the technology and capacity to match the vehicle electrical consumption. For extended periods of life on-board, use the Renault Trucks battery charger (see Page 18).

Renault Trucks BATTERY GUIDE

SOLUTIONS

ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FAILURE Consequences of a defective alternator A poor contact results in an insufficient battery recharge. Consequences of a defective starter Incorrect tightening of the terminals hampers smooth vehicle starting. SOLUTIONS Check compatibility between the battery, alternator and starter motor by using Renault Trucks genuine parts. Check the tightening of the terminals.

INTERNAL SULPHATION OF THE PLATES Internal sulphation of the plates is the main cause of deterioration of a lead-acid battery. This phenomenon occurs alongside deep discharges or when the battery is stored without being fully recharged. When sulphate forms on the lead plates, it insulates the active surfaces from the electrolyte, so the starting performance deteriorates. SOLUTIONS

16h

Remember to check that batteries are fully charged using the charge indicator prior to any long period of downtime. If they are not fully charged, use the Renault Trucks battery charger (see page 18). Use a battery reconditioner (see Page 18).

CHOOSE THE MOST SUITABLE BATTERY When changing the battery, it is necessary to: CHECK THE FOLLOWING: - Size of the battery case. - Position of the terminals. - Method of attachment to the vehicle. - Available battery capacity (Ah). - Start-up current (A). When changing to a battery with a different amperage, order suitable spacers. On a gel battery, a charge indicator is required to ensure that this technology is recharged efficiently. The lead weight has a significant impact on the price and quality of a battery (number of cycles). The lead weight can differ between two batteries with the same capacity rating. UNDERSTAND ENERGY NEEDS The greater the electrical power consumption with the engine switched off (on-board comfort), the higher the battery amperage has to be.

UNDERSTAND THE EQUIPMENT AND USE OF THE VEHICLE If a tail lift or refrigeration unit, accessories or independent air conditioning has been added (high number of cycles): a higher capacity or technology battery should be fitted (Ah). If driving is over very uneven road surfaces (high vibration): a maintenance-free battery should be fitted.

TECHNOLOGIES FOR STOP AND START APPLICATION ENHANCED FLOODED BATTERY TECHNOLOGY (EFB) EFB batteries were introduced as an alternative to AGM batteries for standard Stop and Start applications. Their durability in terms of charge and discharge cycles is lower than that of AGM batteries, but they remain very cost-effective. EFB batteries support applications that operate at partial state of charge with cycles of limited depth of discharge. 3 times more charge/discharge cycles Improved design with special carbon additives and the use of a glass fibre paper covering the plates. Withstands a high number of engine starts and extended stops.

ABSORBENT GLASS MAT TECHNOLOGY (AGM) AGM technology is currently the most advanced battery technology on the market and meets the most stringent requirements. It works through acid being held in a micro glass fibre mat to allow a recombination of gases into water and to provide good compression of active materials. They are the best suited to meet the strictest requirements for vehicles equipped with Stop and Start, regenerative braking and passive boost.

FAQS EXAMPLES OF QUESTIONS ASKED BY CUSTOMERS Does the charge indicator operate in all temperatures? 1

Below -15째C, the charge indicator may no longer be able to carry out adequate predictive quality analyses. This function is therefore disabled. Its electrical power consumption has to be greatly reduced, otherwise it may no longer be possible to restart or connect the battery charger.

Will this reduced capacity due to the temperature be permanent? 2

No. The battery goes back to its initial performance level as the temperature climbs. At +25째C, the charge capacity and potential can return to 100%.

3 What should the driver do if a pre-warning message is displayed for vehicles equipped with a charge indicator?

When the engine is switched off, the charge indicator analyses electrical power consumption. Standard batteries and unmaintained batteries are unable to cope with high discharge levels. The charge indicator helps the driver stay aware of any significant power consumption. If this message is repeated frequently, it means that the batteries must be changed at earlier intervals. In this situation, it is recommended to change to a higher capacity or superior technology.

What should you do if there is warning displayed for vehicles equipped with a charge indicator? 4

A warning message states that the batteries have reached a threshold that may prevent the driver from starting up if they continue to use electrical power with the engine switched off. Drivers are strongly recommended to restart the engine or to plug in the battery charger. 5 Why has Renault Trucks chosen to show the battery status on the driver's information display?

It is essential that the driver is alerted so that they can take preventive measures to avoid unscheduled downtime due to a drop in battery capacity. As a result of an increase in the amount of equipment that consumes a lot of electricity, this display offers the driver the option of understanding the different uses over the lifetime of the batteries and the effect of temperatures. It also indicates when the battery is approaching end of life, to assist with scheduling its replacement. If this warning occurs during a cold period, it is recommended to replace the battery very quickly to guarantee starting.

Are there any larger batteries available on the market (in terms of capacity)? 6

Renault Trucks offers a varied range of batteries suitable for customer needs: economy, standard, maintenancefree or gel. Its batteries are specially designed for heavy duty applications: - Reinforced case to withstand vibration. - Good tilt capacity. - Thick plates providing excellent conductivity. Batteries for marine applications are not suitable for trucks, for example.

7 Which vehicles face the greatest challenges when it comes to battery power?

Long haul transport vehicles have lots of on-board facilities that increase the risk of unscheduled downtime.

What to do to save energy from the vehicle's batteries? 8

The waiting time between LIFE ON BOARD and PARK modes should be changed. This adjustment can be made at an Approved Repair Workshop. The driver can also switch off anything that uses electrical power when they are not needed, especially when the engine is switched off. It is best to recharge mobile phones and laptop computers while the engine is running, for example. To ensure optimum battery operation, check that the connection terminal of the B+ cable is always clean and not corroded.

9 Can I use temperature controllers and vehicle heaters?

Yes, so long as you take into account the outdoor temperature and you adjust the interior air-conditioning to a moderate temperature (23 to 25째C). For example, if the driver selects a 10째C difference between the outdoor and interior temperatures, the batteries will discharge themselves within 4 to 5 hours. 10

What about external power converters?

They should be avoided. They consume a lot of energy. Passive energy consumption usually lies between 1 and 2 Ah. As a result, during one overnight stop of 10 hours, between 10 and 20 Ah are consumed, which is 5 to 20% of the batteries' usable energy, even when no device is connected. If the driver absolutely must use a converter, it should be disconnected as soon as it is no longer required.

The charge indicator is only compatible with Renault Trucks qualified batteries from 185 Ah and above.
