First styling update: 2000-2003 2000 model year

F

or the 2000 model year, the Monster received the first stylistic revisions since its inception. And as the Monster was responsible for 43 per cent of Ducati sales, these updates were significant. Without altering the fundamental style, designer Pierre Terblanche set about tidying up the styling. This involved a new rear number plate and taillight assembly, and front mudguard. Terblanche used advanced Unigraphics software for the first time to generate computerised 3D modelling. As a result, the development time was shortened even more than had been evident in Terblanche’s earlier projects, such as the 900 Super Sport and Mike Hailwood Evoluzione. The Monster Metallic joined the line-up, derived from the Dark and inspired by the metalflake fashion of the 1960s and 1970s as evidenced by the Desmo ‘silver shotgun’ and Imola racers. There was an almost bewildering array of models that year, and the Monster model range and colours for 2000 were as follows. Monster 600/750/900 Available in the following colours: Ducati Red 473.101; yellow 473.201; metallic grey 291.601; metallic black 291.500; metallic blue 291.800. Gold frame, arch and wheels. Monster Dark Differing from the basic version: Tank and front mudguard painted matt black, not varnished; black frame, arch and wheels; bronze, red, silver or yellow (only 600); footpegs

Monster Metallic (900 IE) Differing from the basic version: Front and rear carbon-fibre mudguard; carbonfibre side fairings; carbon-fibre heat guard; frame, arch and wheel rims in black; footpegs without pads; seat cover not supplied. Fuel tank colours: metallic grey; metallic black; metallic dark blue; metallic purple; metallic red; metallic blue. Monster 900 IE Engine All 900 Monsters for 2000 used an engine based

on that of the post-1998 900 Supersport. Unlike the Supersport, the cooling system was entirely by air, with no oil circulation of the cylinders. This was claimed to result in lower operating temperatures and improved oil circulation in the cylinder heads. Jets directed oil underneath the piston crowns, and a larger oil cooler was installed to cope with the increased temperatures. The engine crankcases now included a closed bypass hole. To complement the electronic fuelinjection, the 900 Monster received the new camshafts of the 1998 900 Supersport, these also providing more valve lift than before – 11.8mm for the 43mm inlet valve and 11.4mm for the 38mm exhaust valve. The capacity remained at 904cc, and the compression ratio at 9.2:1. The main reason the factory didn’t increase the capacity or the compression ratio at this stage was due to the heat developed in the rear cylinder. The new camshafts and injection system meant that there was no need

The Monster 900 IE was the first significant update of the original. This is the Monster Metallic 900.
