First Issue Flashback

Greetings old iron collectors and enthusiasts!

I have a rare and unusual treat in this issue, an update on a formerly featured youngster collector, now an experienced and well-aged gentleman by the name of Paul Gorrell. Paul and his Master Workman engine acquisition were originally printed in black and white on the pages of … drum roll please … the very rst issue of Gas Engine Magazine!

Dated January/February 1966, under the watchful eyes of Editor Rev. Elmer L. Ritzman, Gas Engine Magazine was born. is was many, many moons before I entered the world, and another company owned the title altogether. Additionally, it was based out of Enola, Pennsylvania, a hop, skip, and a jump away from the beautiful plains of Kansas the magazine now calls home. Besides that, much remains the same as for the breadth and scope of what we cover within these pages every other month.

Now, I have the extreme privilege of having immediate access to every issue of the magazine printed to date. I often turn to these pages for inspiration and rerun story gems from time to time. If you have been a long-time subscriber, I extend my gratitude and hope you continue to enjoy the magazine. A great many of you boast being the recipient of every issue of GEM to date. at is just incredible! If you are new to the magazine, allow me to share a glimpse into the beginnings of Gas Engine Magazine.

“Mr. Ray Geisinger will have a page describing an engine in each issue. Mrs. Dorothy Smith will conduct the Ladies Page. Joe Fahnestock with his Spark Plug of the Month. Mrs. Anna Mae Branyan will have a column as she does in the Album. We shall endeavor to add other regular features.

“We shall always be pleased to have your comments and criticisms

concerning the contents and makeup of the magazine … I think we should make it clear that this magazine is a historical treatise on all internal combustion engines. Of course we will lope over into other elds sometimes, but we hope that this will be of interest to many of our readers.” Found in that rst issue, this comment was printed under Editorial, and I assume written by the editor, though the attribution is unclear. is all still rings true (although I would add I enjoy compliments much more than criticism, as one does). So send your stories, letters and photos my way. Diverse content and historical perspectives are what make this magazine so fascinating. Similarly to Paul Gorrell, if your photo has been splashed across the pages of GEM in the past, I’d love to give readers an update!

Until next issue, Christine Stoner editor@gasenginemagazine.com

58/4/2: Factory turned public housing

The December/January 2023 story about binder engines included the address of the Fairbanks, Morse & Co. building in Chicago. The building is still there with the name of the company in stone. Built in 1908, today it serves as a condo/apartment building. It’s nice to see it is a survivor.

When I was growing up in Chicago, the best thing you could have on your mini bike or go-cart was a Fairbanks Morse centrifugal clutch. Little did I realize it was a hometown product.

Thanks for sharing photos of this beautiful historical structure. It makes me wonder what types of mechanical treasures can be found hidden beneath the new interior walls or perhaps in the building’s basement. — Editor

58/4/1: Regarding the Elgin half-a-horse

In response to Marissa’s letter to Flywheel Forum (57/6/3) in GEM October/November 2022:

I have owned a couple of these engines. It is a desirable engine for folks who collect small engines. I am not sure of the age, but I believe they date back to the late-teens or early ’20s. The only application I have ever seen is on washing machines. It is unusual to find these engines complete with a switch, carburetor, buzz coil and muffler. This engine appears to be complete, except for the muffler. I have never seen a parts or operating manual for one. If the engine is loose, it would be worth $300 to me. If the engine is frozen, it would be worth $150.

Lawrence Wilson, via email

The Elgin in the photo was commonly used on cream separators, but could be used for any small chores. Many people collect Elgin engines and many Maytag collectors do also. Reason is that Maytag bought Elgin’s patent for a small engine to be used on washing machines. This happened around 1914. Elgin continued to produce other variations that didn’t conflict with the patent they sold. My guess is your engine is mid-’20s. It is a nice original. I don’t know how far it is from me but I’d be interested for around $600.

58/4/4: Help obtaining books

Where can I obtain the two books that the late Lee W. Pedersen used to advertise in Gas Engine Magazine? His classified ads last appeared in early 2020. He had just passed away when I attempted to order them, so I never received the books. The first is Magnetos and Magneto Service, by Jack Beater. The second is Magneto Ignition, Fundamentals of Design and Service, by Fairbanks, Morse & Co. Thank you in advance to whomever can help me obtain copies of these books.

Craig Fiedler, craig.fiedler65@gmail.com

Greetings Craig! I searched the internet and found Magneto Ignition, Fundamentals of Design and Service on Amazon, a limited number of copies, for $30 plus shipping. I am not able to find the first title you listed, perhaps a fellow enthusiast can help with that. Good luck getting your hands on these books! — Editor

58/4/5: F&J engine backstory

It seems that in the year of 1927, a 4hp engine with a serial number of 163296 was built in the Fuller & Johnson factory in Madison, Wisconsin. Time passed and it was found in the village of Sherbrooke, Greysboro County, Nova Scotia, Canada. The owner was unknown. Around 1942, it was bought by Mr. Roland Bautilier who was a commercial fisherman living in Port Bickerton.

He built a skid system on which he mounted an arbor with a disc saw and belted it to the F&J. The purpose was to saw firewood for the family home and enough material to build his fleet of lobster traps. Then it was safely stored in his barn.

Upon his passing, it was taken across the street to his son’s home. A neighbor acquired the arbor and saw, but the F&J was tucked away in a baby barn. In 2010, I met up with Roland’s grandson who said he still had the engine but he wanted a high price for it. I paid it but could not tell my wife when I brought it home.

The grandson had never heard the engine in use and didn’t know how it was operated. All he knew was it was Grandad’s old saw engine. Slowly I did a thorough check and found it in excellent condition. It had a broken rocker arm but the pieces were in the hopper with the starting crank. When the cylinder head came off, there were screwdrivers and wrenches peeking out of the waterways. The valves, piston, rings and bearings were OK. It mainly needed a rocker arm repair, a temporary fuel tank and a wagon to make it portable.

Wow, Erwin, that’s quite the interesting tale. I hope the price remained unknown to your wife or perhaps she fell in love with the engine and wasn’t upset about what you spent. It’s great to know the backstory behind historical relics such as this one. Thank you for sharing! — Editor

STORY

This engine is a Standard auxiliary engine built by the Standard Motor Construction Co. of Jersey City, New Jersey. The Standard was designed by Carl Carlos Riotte when he formed the firm in 1895. He is known for designing the first 4-cycle, 6-cylinder marine engine. His engines were well-designed and balanced to sustain the continuous use they endured.

The engine supplied all of the auxiliary services on World War I submarine chasers; this particular engine served as the source of electrical power, as an air compressor, and as a combined bilge and fire pump. All parts were readily interchangeable so that spares could be carried and the chaser engines easily maintained at sea.

The submarine chasers were a class of wooden vessels that the Navy finally decided to build after German U-boats were spotted in American waters. During that short time, a total of 440 chasers were built. They were 110 feet long and 15 feet beam, and they were armed with one 3-inch gun, depth charges, and two 50-caliber machine guns. The Navy commissioned more than 80 boat builders on the East Coast, the Great Lakes, and the Ohio River to complete this task. And it was successful with the chasers accounting for 40 percent of all German submarine “kills.”

These little vessels, “The Splinter Fleet,” proved seaworthy and plied the waters off Europe, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. They had the advantage over larger vessels by being able to instantly stop their engines, listen for a sub, then instantly restart or reverse. The larger steam-powered vessels could not shut down all their equipment to be silent. Standard provided all the motive power, supplying three main propulsion engines of 220hp each. These were 6-cylinder, 10-inch bore/11-inch stroke, open crankcase, 4-cycle engines with air starting and air reversing by shifting the cams. Each vessel also had one auxiliary engine like this example.

This company continued being a major manufacturer of marine engines into the 1930s until the Great Depression forced it out of business. This is one of the few Standard engines known to exist.

Addendum to Voltage Value

Following up on an article published in the February/March 2023 issue of Gas Engine Magazine.

As was pointed out in my previous article (due to meter short comings), reading the output voltage of a magneto while spinning it up provides no useful information on the health of the magneto. The output of the magneto is short pulses of voltage, in the range of 70v to 100v, that are

too narrow for any meter to read. Additionally the frequency is well below what is readable by standard meters. The 5v to 12v typical meter reading is simply the meter’s “stab in the dark” at a voltage it cannot read. It was pointed out that different meters will likely give varying results. Also stated, the energy in your spark is determined by the current in the coil at the time the igniter trips, not the voltage you are trying to measure. Fortunately, coil action converts these narrow voltage pulses to a nice AC coil current. The function of the voltage, that your meter cannot read, is to get the current rolling in the coil. The

useful measure of a low-tension magneto’s health is its AC short circuit current (see Figure 1). Although the output varies across magneto brands, 0.7A is typically a good magneto. Most magnetos that produce only 0.5A or less are likely in trouble.

But, as pointed out in the previous article, many low-cost analog meters don’t have an AC current setting. Fortunately, any analog AC voltmeter can be converted to an AC current meter by simply adding a resistor (see Figure 2).

First, short the output of the magneto through a 1 Ohm resistor.

Figure 3: Bench testing a magneto using a 1 Ohm 10 Watt resistor and an AC voltmeter.

When the resistor is in place, connect the AC volt meter across it. Figure 3 is a completed set up. By Ohms Law, the voltage across the resistor will be exactly the AC current in Amps. When the magneto is spun up, at least 500rpm, a 0.75v voltage reading (for example) means the magneto is putting out 0.75A. This test should be conducted using an

analog meter. A digital meter is often bothered by the low frequency. The resistor should have a power rating of at least 1 Watt and is readily available on Amazon and eBay.

Basement BACKUS

Michigan family rehomes and restores 14hp engine from four stories underground.

The Backus sits in Ed’s small museum in Carleton, Michigan. The Backus flywheels sit higher than any of the other engines in the barn.

March 2015 is a month I will never forget. This was by far the most fun several of my family members and I have ever had acquiring a gas engine. I was offered the opportunity to purchase a gas engine, however, we had to get it out of a basement that was four stories underground.

The adventure begins

In the beginning of March, I received an email in regards to an engine for sale. According to the email there were no identifying marks on the engine, they just wanted it gone. When looking at the photos of the engine in the email, I was pretty sure it was a rare old-style Backus. The engine sat on a

white ceramic tile base in a dingy dark room. Engines like this don’t turn up every day. My first thought was, who is playing a joke on me? It seemed too good to be true.

Skeptically, I called the number and spoke with a gentleman named Tim from World Impact Ministries located in Newark, New Jersey. Tim was in charge at World Impact and told me he was a car collector and knew a little bit about old items and their value. He thought the engine in the basement of their building was a steam engine. Tim and his crew did not want to see this neat piece of history get scrapped. They knew someone would want it, so they contacted me. They wanted to sell, but I would be responsible for getting the engine out of the building’s basement. I was super interested but still doubtful. I had some questions that Tim could not answer right away. He said he would get back with me. Several days went by and I didn’t hear back from him. My wife, Karen, insisted I call him back. I made the call and received the answers I needed. I couldn’t believe it. This was a legitimate deal.

My excitement level went through the roof. Tim had a scrapper come in months earlier to give him a quote and details of how they would remove the engine from the basement. Tim forwarded all this information to me thinking it would be helpful. The scrapper’s quote had

photos of the building, the steps, the corners, and the doors the engine would have to be hauled through, up, around, and out to get the engine to ground level. After several phone calls back and forth with questions about the building and specifics on the engine, Tim mentioned all the brass was stolen when the building sat empty in the 1990s. With no identification, I wasn’t sure what size the engine was. With Tim’s measurements and my research, I was pretty sure it was a 12 to 14hp old-style Backus.

Assembling a crew

I did not have a Backus so I was super excited and needed to work quickly. The plan was to pick the engine up the following week. I assembled my crew: Karen, my oldest son, Eddy, and our youngest son, Ryan. Eddy just happened to be starting spring break from college that week and we took Ryan out of high school for a few days. It was an excellent learning experience. Our daughters, Holly and Amber, were in college and were unable to get time off.

Making a plan

Now for the planning to remove the engine. How was I going to get this engine out of the building safely? Even with the scrapper’s information, there were still a lot of logistics to figure out. Safety was important to me. I did not want

anyone to get hurt. The one thing I knew for sure was the engine had to come apart and had to be taken out piece by piece. However, there were several long flights of stairs and twists and turns. How were we going to get the engine pieces up the steps? Again, safety was the most important thing. I made several more phone calls to Tim and finally had a plan together.

I sat in my chair, with my head spinning, making a list of tools I would need if something were to go wrong. I wanted everything in place for plans A, B, C, and D. I knew I would need a moveable gantry crane to lift and move the heavy parts. I needed dollies, which I’d just bought at a flea market the month before, to move the heavy parts around once we got them off. The plan was to have everything I needed so I would not have to go to a store in Newark. The next several days we were shopping for tools and things I did not have. Then, we loaded up the van and got the trailer ready to go.

Van, trailer, tools and supplies – check.

An unexpected complication

We were ready to go. Then, the morning before our adventure, Eddy came down with strep throat at college and was not sure he could drive home. With an early morning visit to quick care, medicine, and rest, he made it. I figured he wouldn’t

miss this for anything. We headed out early the next morningstrategically to miss the Newark rush hour traffic - for the 10-hour drive. We arrived at World Impact at 2 p.m. in the afternoon.

Seeing the Backus for the first time

Once we got there, we had to be allowed into a gated parking lot behind the World Impact building. The neighborhood was not bad, but the surrounding areas weren’t the greatest. We met with Ron, an employee and a resident of the World Impact building. He gave us a remote for the entrance gate and a key to the building so we could get in and out without having to contact anyone. Then he took us down several long

flights of stairs and through a hallway with white ceramic brick walls on one side and a concrete block wall with high windows at the top on the other side. When we reached the boiler area, there were several entrances. The door on the left was the room with the engine. We were all so excited to go into this room and see this engine. We were led through the door and there she sat, a beautifully preserved 14hp Backus engine, on its original site. The engine was sitting on a base made out of glazed white ceramic bricks. The grease can and brushes were still sitting next to the engine as if the mechanics just left yesterday. You could just imagine, back in the day, the white brick and the engine room being meticulous. The lights in the

engine room did not work. The only light we had was coming through the high windows from the boiler room and hallway, but that was not enough. We used our flash lights, and Ron found some trouble lights for us. We made it work.

We were told the building had flooded several time, and there were puddles and mud on the basement floors with some rooms containing more water than others. It was going to be a dirty job.

A bonus view of NYC

They offered us a place to stay on site during our time in Newark. The World Impact building was quite large. It covered a city block. In 2015, it was the home to several churches and a private school. World Impact

did ministry work within the local community. At times they would have groups come in and stay while they did their ministry work. They offered us the bunk room these ministry groups used. The bunk room was an old classroom with a bunch of bunk beds and a lounge. They showed us the way to the bunk room, which was on the opposite side of the building and several floors up. As Ron was showing us the way back to the basement, he took a detour to the roof patio and showed us the view of downtown New York City where the Twin Towers used to be. It was really neat to see. After heading back to the van, we hauled all our sleeping bags, pillows, clothes, and towels to the bunk room before heading down to the basement to start our work.

Ready, set, go

When we finally returned to the basement, Ron made sure we had

everything we needed before he left. We knew we had lots of work to do. Now the tools we brought to take apart the engine had to be hauled to the basement. Karen, Eddy, Ryan, and I made one trip, then Eddy, still not feeling well stayed in the basement with Karen setting up our lights and organizing the tools and supplies. Ryan and I hauled the rest of the crates of tools and supplies down four flights of stairs. Ryan and I assembled the gantry crane while Eddy and Karen began wrenching on the engine. Karen began with one of the cylinder head nuts and it moved easily. She said she knew we were not going to have any trouble taking this engine apart after that. Karen removed more than half of the nuts and bolts on the engine.

Everyone needed a break and it was dinner time, so we headed to a McDonalds a couple blocks away. We didn’t know the area and it was

getting dark so we decided to take the van. Upon returning, curiosity got the better of us. We had to check out the rest of the basement. It was a huge square block building so there was a lot to investigate. There was a balcony in the room in which we were working, and we found a restroom and former offices up there. Many rooms were dark and empty. Some had remnants (cabinets, office furniture, toilets) of what the rooms were used for. The room on the other side of the boilers was a mechanics room of some sort. It had tool cabinets and work benches. This room lead to a large open room that you could tell once housed some sort of engine, possibly steam. The concrete floor had a hole where a large flywheel would have been. I'm sure these rooms were busy in the building’s heyday. Graffiti littered some of the walls, left when the building sat empty.

We returned to the boiler room, which was easy to find because it was the only room with working lights. The boilers were gigantic. They had several massive doors and one was on the ground. Eddy and Karen tried to move it with no success. We worked around it. You could just image how beautiful and clean these rooms were back in the day. The boilers were surrounded by white glazed brick walls and a keystone date plate that read 1921.

Besides the Backus room, opposite from the boilers, there were three other rooms. One room was slightly flooded and full of cans, the other room was empty and the third was an old unusable dumb waiter. I knew that had to go somewhere. It definitely was not in working condition because it was a little flooded under the bottom plate. We did some searching and found the dumb waiter had a 40-foot shaft that led upward to two diamond plate doors opening to the ground level about 60 feet from the parking lot entrance. The doors were welded shut. We asked Ron if the doors could be unsealed and the engine taken out through the dumb waiter shaft. He checked on this for us and we were given a thumbs up. This changed everything. He gave us the name of a local crane operator. Now the plans have changed. No stairs, no turns, no doors, no hauling, and a much safer way to move the engine. All the parts would just fit, with inches to spare, in the dumb waiter shaft.

Breaking down the engine

It took us five hours to take apart the engine. At 10 p.m., we had all the large parts put on wheeled dollies and sitting by the dumb waiter. The engine was ready for removal the next morning. We were filthy and tired. We headed up to the bunk room to shower and sleep, saving our dirty clothes for the next day.

As I lay there, excited and planning out the next day, all I heard were sirens. We found out the building was near a hospital. We all live in the country and we were not accustomed to the city sounds or

arrived about one hour later. While we waited, I cut the welds away from the dumb waiter doors at the ground level to get them to open. I wondered how many years it had been since they were last used. Now we had direct access to the basement where the engine parts waited 40 feet down. The World Impact building still housed a working school. People would be going in and out of the entrance gate all day, and we were told not to block the entrance. We moved some dumpsters out of the way, and, with limited space, the crane guy maneuvered his rig just

sirens all night. We all eventually fell asleep from sheer exhaustion.

Up and out

The next morning, we were up and ready to go. We put our dirty clothes back on so we didn't ruin anymore. Ron, who lived on the same floor as the bunk room, offered us a bowl of cereal, toast and orange juice. I called the crane guy, and he said he wouldn't be able to come for about a week. He inquired about the site and said that if he had to park on the street, we would need a permit. I told him I would pay cash if he could come that day and we thought he could park in the parking lot. We agreed on a price and he

in the parking lot out of the way of the entrance gate. He asked who was rigging the engine parts and I said I was. He never even looked at what he was pulling out of this shaft hole in the ground. Ryan, Eddy, and I rigged, and Karen supervised at the ground level, assisting the crane operator.

First, I rigged up the base, which the crane pulled out with ease. The next thing you know, it's floating through the air heading for the trailer. From the basement, the boys and I had to run up four flights of stairs, down a hall, out around the dumb waiter shaft, and through the parking lot to the trailer. We backed it up so the crane operator could set

the base on it. I had to move the van and trailer back and forth each time a part was removed from the shaft to keep the parking lot entrance lane clear. When lowering the base onto the trailer, Eddy, Ryan and I had to do some muscling as we guided the base down.

I moved the van back out of the way, Ryan and I went back down the four flights of stairs and rigged up the flywheels. I was a little nervous about the flywheels going out. It was going to be tight. Next thing you know the flywheels rolled into the dumbwaiter shaft with only 4 inches to spare on each side. They never bumped or hit the side walls. I ran back upstairs, backed the van up, and the crane operator set the flywheels on the engine base with precision as we guided them. This crane operator was good.

I moved the van again, went downstairs several more times to rig the other parts, ran upstairs to move the van back, placing the parts on the engine and repeated the process.

We reassembled the base, flywheels and cylinder on the trailer as they came out.

Finishing up

We still had a lot of work to do. We had to haul the rest of the parts and tools out of the basement. With

four us it went a little faster. We had to secure the parts on the engine and tie it down to the trailer. It had been sunny a good portion of the time the engine was being removed. It started to rain when we were almost done removing the last of the engine parts and continued as we secured the engine and packed up to go. It was amazing to think that this 14hp Backus was in this building close to 100 years. We were able to disassemble it in five hours, haul it out, and reassemble it on the trailer in less than 24 hours.

We headed to the bunk room to clean up and change clothes before the ride home. We hauled all of our belongings to the van. It was noon and we were ready to go. We conducted business with World Impact and they gave us a tour of the school and the building. We returned the keys and gate remote, thanked them for the opportunity to purchase and remove the engine, said our goodbyes, and headed out of Newark just prior to rush hour. It started snowing on our way home. We were all exhausted, so we decided to stop in Pennsylvania for the night and continue home the next day.

Back home

At home, the Backus sat on the trailer for a couple of days until the weather cleared up. Eddy and I unloaded and rebuilt the gantry crane we needed to unload the

Backus. Karen made a photo book documenting our adventure for my birthday. What an incredible birthday and adventure it was. The 14hp Backus made the trek from a basement in Newark, New Jersey, to Carleton, Michigan.

The Backus sat for several days supported by the gantry crane as I built a wooden base for it. One evening Eddy, Karen, and I lowered the engine on the base. Now the engine can sit on its own again. It isn't as pretty as the white ceramic tile, but it does the job. Over the next several months, I acquired needed parts and had a few made in order to complete the engine. A friend even had a reproduction brass tag for it.

The hardest part was trying to get the Backus to run. It has hot tube ignition so we took the engine outside and got the hot tube heated up. We got the engine running after hours of experimenting and adjusting the proper air/fuel mixture along with the hot tube temperature.

The 14hp Backus engine is now on display in my barn/museum with the grease can and brush sitting next to the engine just as they were in the World Impact building — minus the white ceramic brick base. The Backus is immediately noticeable in my barn as it seems to tower over all the other engines.

Amazing to think we were able to move this big engine from four stories underground.

This was an incredible adventure. My family/crew will never forget this engine run. It is definitely a bucket list item I can check off.

Ed Laginess grew up around engines and began seriously collecting in the early 1980s. He currently has 200-plus engines, including the Backus, along with engines from Sorg, Kansas City Lightning, Springfield, Calahan, Otto, Miami and others. His engines and antiques are displayed in his "Happy Spot," a small museum in the barn behind his house. He also collects antique spark plugs, bicycles, toys and has around a dozen old cars. TURNED Upside Down

Midwest Old Threshers Reunion to feature inverted engines at 2023 show.

The featured gas engines for the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for 2023 are inverted engines. What is an inverted engine? The MerriamWebster dictionary defines an

inverted engine as “an engine whose crankshaft is above the cylinder.” It also could be described as an engine that sits on its head. An inverted engine is an upside-down version of the common vertical engine style seen at shows.

Inverted engine designs date back to the earliest versions of engines produced. Back in the day, these engines were described as vertical engines since the cylinder was vertically arranged. Many early engine builders used the inverted design, but all

referred to it as a vertical engine. Even after conventional vertical engines became the norm, the few companies offering inverted designs still called their engines verticals.

The early Otto & Langen noncompression engine design of 1867 was one of the first internal combustion engines. The free piston design, which launches the piston upward then returns it via gravity, was arranged in an inverted configuration. The 4-stroke engine by Nicolaus Otto came in 1876, and its principles were soon applied to engines with an inverted configuration. Otto engines by Crossley Bros. of England and Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz of Germany, among others, were offered in inverted designs into the late-1890s.

most manufacturers. Still a few held onto the inverted configuration. Two of the most successful with the inverted design were based in Chicago, Webster Mfg. Co. and Temple Pump Co. Webster produced inverted engines from 1896 to 1906. Temple Pump started making inverted engines around 1901 and made an extensive line of single and 2-cylinder engines. In 1911, they also began marketing their engines through the United States Engine Works, but by late 1916 all engine production stopped with the failure of the Temple concern.

Other companies that made inverted engines around the turn of the 20th century included Gemmer Engine Co. of Marion, Indiana, and Racine Gas Engine Co. and Pierce Engine Co., both of Racine, Wisconsin. Hart-Parr of Madison, Wisconsin, made unique inverted engines when the company began in 1897 and continued offering them for a few years after relocating to Charles City, Iowa.

Inverted engines essentially disappeared from the market by the mid-1910s. A curious exception to this appeared around 1919 from Elgin Gas Motor Co., of Elgin, Illinois, with the introduction of their small engine

known as the “Little Pet” or “Hafa-Hors.” This small engine was rated at 1/2hp and carried a 2-inch bore and stroke.

It is unusual to see inverted engines at shows, as they were made in relatively small quantities as compared to the more popular horizontal and

vertical engines. This rarity makes inverted engines highly coveted by collectors today, a prized piece in any collection.

We are fortunate at the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion to have had an inverted engine shown nearly every year since the mid-1960s. This engine (shown on Page 20) is a 15hp Master Workman 2-cylinder engine made by Temple Pump Co. The owner is our featured gas engine exhibitor for 2023, Paul Gorrell of Burlington, Iowa.

Paul originally found the engine based on a tip from the president of the board of directors at a meeting at Old Threshers. The tip led him to a barn outside Colusa, Illinois, where he discovered the Master Workman still set up to power a lineshaft, along with two other engines, all amongst a huge collection of rocks. All three of the engines were purchased and became part of Paul’s collection.

A photo and write-up about Paul and the Master Workman engine appeared in the first issue of Gas Engine Magazine in the January/February 1966 issue (see opposite page). Paul and his family have been faithful exhibitors, along with the Temple Pump Master Workman engine, at nearly all Midwest Old Threshers Reunions ever since, for 50-plus years!

The 2023 inverted engine feature is sure to bring out some unique engines to see. If you have an inverted engine, be sure to bring it to Mt. Pleasant and be a part of the big show, August 31—September 4. You will not want to miss seeing the unique feature of engines turned upside down!

Barry Tuller can be contacted at btengines@gmail.com. Elgin Gas Motor Co. introduced a small engine using an inverted configuration around 1919, offering them for sale for a few years. Unidentified Upright

Ihave an unidentified small air-cooled 4-cycle, singlecylinder gas engine. It is a neat upright engine, about the size of a 1920s F series Briggs & Stratton. I received the engine with no carburetor, fuel mixer/fuel tank, muffler or cooling fan. It has a small German Bosch magneto with “FB1C” on one side and “B36228” on the other. The magneto is driven directly by the crankshaft and the best part is it works well. A grooved pulley on the crank shaft has a notch cut into it for rope starting. It has three round steel pegs protruding, which I presume is part of a flexible coupling. It looks to be original.

I had a stuck and rusty Briggs & Stratton from which I took the fuel mixer and muffler and added to my little engine. I made a throttle control lever out of a piece of flat 1/8-inch-thick steel. The little engine has no governor on it, which let me control the engine speed. The spark plug is a Champion brand #31 with 1/2-inch pipe thread as on a Model T Ford car. It still works!

The brass oil filler and breather for the crank case are my doing. I made a cooling fan from a piece of 14-gauge steel, drew a CAD drawing of what I wanted, and had a metal shop technician cut it out. I have an Ideal gas engine that has a similar fan. I down-sized to get the size I needed. The fan pulley is made from a piece of 1-3/4-

inch round aluminum stock. The drive belt it is an O-ring from a car automatic transmission (I work in automotive).

Because this is a fun hobby, I took a Log Cabin syrup can and used it for a fuel tank. The engine is overhead valve with the exhaust valve driven by a

cam, a rocker arm and a push rod. The intake valve is naturally aspirated. The intake and exhaust valves are on opposite sides of the head for good air flow. Most engines today have both ports together for all weather operation. This engine was most likely not used in cold weather.

All the bolts and nuts are cut using standard U.S. threads. All the parts are cast iron. I have not done any painting yet and don’t know if I will.

Inside the engine are two flywheels, much like a HarleyDavidson motorcycle. The circular crankcase suggests motorcycle use, however, the flat mounts on the crankcase bottom suggests otherwise. Further research suggests it was used on a small skiff or boat.

My engine runs nicely, it’s smooth and quiet and sounds like a Briggs & Stratton. I would like more information on this engine so I can answer questions when it’s on display.

If you have any information on Dave’s mystery engine, send details to editor@gasenginemagazine.com. Details will be shared in a future Flywheel Forum.
