Seminole Sensation Week 2013 Seminole Sensation Week (SSWeek) is the annual “welcome program” at Florida State University that is planned and implemented by the Oglesby Union. SSWeek is held a week prior to the beginning of the fall semester as an alternative to high risk entertainment. While attending these series of events, students are able to learn about the many ways to get involved on campus, form an attachment to the university, as well as meet many students who share their interests. SSWeek is co-sponsored by Academic and Student Affairs. Seminole Sensation Week 2013 events were held Wednesday August 21st through Sunday August 25th. The Oglesby Union Student Activities Center (SAC) provides leadership in the planning, marketing, and hosting of the events. Campus Partners that made Seminole Sensation Week 2013 possible include the Office of the Provost, Aramark, Campus Recreation, Career Center, Center for Global Engagement, Center for Leadership and Social Change, FSU Luau, Greek Life, New Student and Family Programs, Office of International Programs, Oglesby Union, Student Government Association, Sustainable Campus, University Counseling Center, University Health Services, University Housing/IRHC, University Libraries, and University Relations. The Oglesby Union’s Education and Assessment team from the Department of Education, Research, and Assessment assessed and evaluated SSWeek activities in order to improve future SSWeeks. General SSWeek surveys were distributed at all SSWeek events (with the exception of Sunday’s events). Event specific surveys were created and administered for events such as Breakfast for A Buck and the Involvement Fair. In addition, an online survey was made available after SSWeek concluded. General Survey Highlights The General Survey was administered on August 21, 22, 23, and 24 at various Seminole Sensation Events that were held at the Union Courtyard and the SLC. There were 1,028 general survey responses. • The majority of the general survey respondents were female (62%), freshman (52%) that resided on-campus (55%). This was consistent with the data compiled over the past five years. • The top three ethnicities surveyors identified themselves as were White/ Caucasian (60%), AfricanAmerican/ Black (15%) and Hispanic/ Latino (13%) • Friends/ word-of-mouth (28%), flyers/ posters in residence halls (12%), and Facebook (11%) ranked highest in ways students heard about SSWeek activities and events (Students were allowed to choose more than on method). • The majority of respondents attended because they were hungry/ wanted free food (28%), enjoyed the events (27%) and were interested in meeting new people and socializing (24%). Breakfast for A Buck Survey Highlights The Breakfast for a Buck survey was conducted on Friday, August 23, 2013 and 259 people completed the survey. A total of 692 people attended this B4AB. Response rate was 47%. • The majority of Breakfast for a Buck Survey respondents were freshman (57%), female (55%), Caucasian/ White (49%), who lived on-campus (69%). • The majority of the respondents attended the event because they were either hungry or wanted inexpensive food (40%) • The majority of respondents, 43%, thought the food was of average quality. • Breakfast for A Buck (41%), concerts (26%), and comedians (13%) were the top three activities the survey respondents were most interested in (Respondents were allowed to choose more than one activity). • Most respondents believed that attending Breakfast for a Buck on campus reduced student drinking of alcoholic beverages that evening with 44% of respondents stating maybe and 34% of respondents stating yes.


Involvement Fair Survey Highlights The Involvement Fair survey was conducted on Tuesday, August 27, 2013; 146 student organizations and campus departments participated. Student attendance was estimated at 3,500. During the Involvement Fair in the Union, surveys pertaining to the Involvement Fair were administered and a total of 130 responses were received. • Most students who completed the survey were freshmen (43%) and females (68%) who resided on-campus (51%) and were not members of a recognized student organization (60%). • The respondents came to the event to learn about campus activities (25%), they were hungry an wanted free food (22%), and to enjoy the event (22%). • A vast amount of students surveyed responded that they found an RSO that they would like to join (68%) and did not attend the SAC Open House (58%). Of those students that reside on campus, 43% found an RSO that they would like to join. Online Survey Students were also asked to take an online survey to give general feedback on their experiences with SSWeek 2013. The online survey responses were recorded in the weeks after SSWeek and there was a sum of 316 responses started with 252 surveys completed. Below are some of the highlights from the online survey:             

Out of the 94% of respondents that attended SSWeek activities and completed the survey, 98% of them enjoyed SSWeek overall. The majority of the respondents were freshman (39%), female (73%), Caucasian (66%), who resided oncampus (61%). Classification Breakdown: Freshman (39%), sophomore (23%), junior (14%), senior (16%), graduate (4%), transfer (3%), and other (1%) Ethnicity Breakdown: African American/ Black (8%), Asian/ Pacific Islander (5%), Caucasian/ White (66%), Hispanic/ Latino (14%), Mixed (6%), and Other (2%). Wednesday was the day most respondents moved into their residence hall or campus apartment (45%). There were a total of 157 housing respondents. The residence hall that most respondents lived in was Salley Hall (17%). Friends/word of mouth (72%), Facebook (50%), and the flyers/ posters in residence halls (49%) were the three most common ways that respondents heard about SSWeek (Respondents were allowed to select more than one method). The top three reasons respondents chose to attend SSWeek because they wanted to enjoy the event (82%), were hungry or wanted free food (83%), or wanted to meet new people and socialize (71%) (Respondents were allowed to select multiple reasons). The percentage of respondents that thought that student participation in SSWeek reduced student drinking of alcoholic beverages was 49% who stated yes and 36% who stated maybe. The FSU S.A.F.E and/or Night Nole Bus had been used by 56% of respondents upon their arrival at FSU Almost all of the respondents, 93%, did not begin fall 2013 Panhellenic Greek Recruitment. Only 1% of respondents indicated that they would not return to SSWeek activities next year The event that most respondents attended was the FSU Luau (70%). Other events and activities that most respondents attended were Late Night Pancakes in the Commons Courtyard (45%), Novelties (42%), and Taste of Tallahassee (41%).
