Haunted Harvest 2016 Summary Overview: Haunted Harvest was held on October 28, 2016 in conjunction with several Oglesby Union events, including the FSU High Flying Circus Halloween show, Paint-a-Pot, Pumpkin Carving, Haunted House, Friday Night Bites, films at the Student Life Cinema and cosmic bowling. The event was free to FSU students with a valid gold FSU ID. While many specific events had individual event times, the majority of events occurred between 7:00pm to 2:00am. Campus Partners and Planning Committee: This event is planned by a committee consisting of staff members from the Student Activities Center, Guest Services, Operations and Facilities, the Art Center, Crenshaw Lanes, the Student Life Center, Flying High Circus, DSA Marketing, Union Administration, and Aramark. Student leaders on Union Productions also serve on the committee. Invitations have also been extended to Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, University Housing, and Campus Recreation in an attempt to bring other campus partners in on the planning. The committee was co-chaired by the Graduate Intern for Alcohol-Free Programming and the Coordinator of Student Activities. Event Attendance: Attendance was calculated by tracking the amount of waivers that were filled out by faculty, staff, students, and non-students (members of the community), as well as other activities. The total attendance at Haunted Harvest was 1,053.
Online Survey Online surveys were emailed to participants who completed a waiver and provided their FSUID. Individualized links were emailed to 952 participants. The link to the survey was also publicized via social media, the Haunted Harvest website, and survey cards that were distributed during the event. The emails and promotions resulted in 263 respondents, a 28% response rate. Below are highlights from the survey: Haunted Harvest Survey Highlights The Haunted Harvest survey was administered via email following the event. There were 258 online survey responses.
The majority of respondents were freshman (28%), female (76%), Caucasian/ White (50%), and residing on campus (42%). Of the respondents that attended Haunted Harvest activities and completed the survey, 97% of them enjoyed Haunted Harvest overall. Friends/word of mouth (47%), flyers/ posters in residence halls (27%), and Facebook (27%) were the most common ways that respondents heard about Haunted Harvest (Respondents were allowed to select more than one method). The top two reasons respondents chose to attend Haunted Harvest were because they wanted to enjoy the activities (86%) and were hungry/wanted free food (75%) (Respondents were allowed to select multiple reasons). The activities that gained the most interest included the Carnivals/Special Events (25%), Paint-a-Pot (21%), and Circus and Movies at the ASLC (12%). Respondents were asked if they thought participation in Haunted Harvest reduced student drinking of alcoholic beverages. The majority (81%) of respondents responded yes or maybe, while 19% responded no. Overall students felt safe walking to and from the various Haunted Harvest event locations (99%). Those that did not feel safe (1%) attributed it mostly to being dark outside. The three events that most respondents did not attended were the Club Doununder Concert (80%), Cosmic Bowling (79%) and the ASLC showing of Ghostbusters (75%). When asked which event was the respondent’s favorite, the most common responses were Paint-aPot, Haunted House, Pumpkin Carving, and Magician. Next year, 56% of students will definitely attend Haunted harvest and 32% of respondents might attend, 0% said they would not attend, 12% responded with would not attend due to graduation. The majority of respondents (59%) said it was their first time attending Haunted Harvest, while 41% of respondents have attended the event more than once. The majority of students (91%) said they would eat at the food vendors again and rated Cake Pops (79%) as the most popular. (Respondents were allowed to select more than one option). Students rated the overall cleanliness of the areas at Haunted Harvest good and excellent (97%) When asked what other Oglesby Union events they have attended, respondents’ top three events were Market Wednesdays (63%), Free Movies at the ASLC (57%), and Homecoming 2016 (53%) For next year’s Haunted Harvest, students suggested more food vendors, more rides/entertainment activities, longer duration time of event, more vegetarian options, and increased publicity for the event.
