ROASTED PUMPKIN SOUP

Prep: 15 minutes | Cook: 1 hour, 15 minutes | Servings: 6 6-pound roasting pumpkin 2 tablespoons olive oil ½ teaspoon salt (approximate) 1 small red onion, sliced 2 cups vegetable broth 4 to 5 cups water ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon paprika ¼ teaspoon cayenne swirl of heavy cream (optional)

Note: There is 1 cup of cooked and mashed pumpkin in a pound of pumpkin. Best pumpkin varieties for soup: pie, Cinderella, Fairytale, Kabocha, Rouge Vif d’Etampes, Autumn Gold, and Buttercup. Preheat oven to 350 F. Cut pumpkin(s) in half. Scoop out the middle strands and seeds; discard the strands. Place the seeds in a small bowl, rinse with water, drain, and let dry out for a few minutes on paper towels. Pile seeds onto a cookie sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and toss to coat. Spread out in an even layer and bake 12 to 15 minutes, tossing halfway through, until they turn a golden-to-medium brown. Remove from oven and pour seeds into a small bowl. On the same cookie sheet, toss onion slices in olive oil. Spread in an even layer and roast in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until caramelized. Meanwhile, brush interior of the pumpkin with olive oil and place flesh side down in a roasting pan. Bake 45 to 60 minutes on the bottom rack of the oven, or until the skin has started to brown and wrinkle and a fork easily pierces through the flesh. If you’re unsure it’s soft enough, keep cooking. Overcooking pumpkin for soup is better than undercooking it. If the skin starts to burn, loosely cover with foil. Let pumpkin cool, then peel off the skin and remove the stem. Place remaining flesh in a food processor and blend until very smooth. Add the roasted red onion, vegetable broth, cayenne, nutmeg, ginger, and paprika and blend again. Pour soup into a saucepan and heat to desired temperature (or store soup in fridge until ready to eat.) Once hot, taste to adjust spices to your liking. Garnish with a swirl of heavy cream and the roasted pumpkin seeds.

Per serving: 150 calories, 3 grams fat (0.5 grams saturated fat), 0 milligrams cholesterol, 580 milligrams sodium, 29 grams total carbohydrates, 10 grams fiber, 3 grams protein.

Electric cooperatives have a lot of experience advocating for our members and communities with legislators and policy-makers. Since our birth in politics in 1935, we have been promoting — and sometimes fighting for — appropriate action on issues that affect America’s electric cooperatives and the rural communities they serve. Each year, we meet with the senators and congressmen who represent the districts that cover our service area as well as with state and local government leaders. America’s energy system is going through fundamental transformation, and much of the focus in Washington is on large utilities in urban areas. Electric co-ops are fundamentally different, and it is vital that decisionmakers understand the difference and avoid policies that would compromise the benefits of cooperative memberowned utilities.

More than 430 Pioneer consumer-members have supported our efforts by becoming part of the Co-op Owners for Political Action Committee over the last 16 years. Being able to tell legislators our members are involved in the PAC sends them a message that their constituents care about keeping cooperative-supplied power readily accessible and affordable. They care about creating a reasonable, cost-effective approach to dealing with environmental issues and climate change, and they care about ensuring rural communities have the same access to technology and other resources that urban areas have. We would welcome more members to join the PAC at the nominal monthly dues, which can be conveniently paid through your electric bill. Whether you belong to Co-op Owners for Political Action or not, you now have another way to be more engaged with the political process at the national level. Co-op consumermembers speaking up for themselves on issues that impact electric co-ops lets elected officials know even more about the needs of our communities — and their constituencies. The new grassroots program has been launched by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Voices for Cooperative Power (VCP) is a network of electric co-op members working together to influence elected officials who are making energy policy decisions that impact our co-ops and, by extension, our way of life. It provides a platform to talk about the ways Pioneer supports your community. Beyond delivering electricity, co-ops provide jobs, stability, and economic growth — all while ensuring that energy affordability and reliability remain foundational benefits of electric co-op membership. Employee promotions

Promotions continue high quality of service to members and recognize employee capabilities

Pioneer recently promoted three employees within the human resource, operations, and member service departments. The experience and professionalism each of these individuals bring to their new positions will serve the cooperative’s consumer-members well and will continue to advance its mission.

Kris Johnson became human resource coordinator on Aug. 9. Kris came to the cooperative in 1995 as operations clerk and became operations coordinator in 2000. In those positions, Kris was a dispatcher, coordinating planned and unplanned outages with crews and cleansing data in Pioneer’s outage management system to ensure accuracy. She was also involved in the co-op’s work management project, which transitioned many work processes from paper orders to electronic. Kris is a certified loss control prevention specialist and has assisted with many trainings, safety tracking, and reporting. Her experience in that area, as well as her attention to detail, prepared Kris well for her new role, where she will be responsible for maintaining records and compliance relating to safety, workers’ compensation, benefits, policies, and other legal requirements. She will also provide administrative support to the President/CEO and Pioneer’s board of trustees in the preparation and distribution of monthly board meeting materials.

On Aug. 16, Matt Richard assumed his new role as manager of safety and construction. Matt joined Pioneer in 2006 as a lineman trainee and was promoted to first class lineman in 2010. He then moved to operating a one-man service truck in 2017. Matt’s experience on the line crew, as well as his exemplary safety performance, make him an excellent choice to lead and counsel employees on effective techniques to avoid injuries and vehicle accidents. He will ensure compliance with all federal and state laws related to the electric utility industry, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency regulations. He will coordinate Pioneer’s safety committee and coordinate training for operations personnel. Matt will also lead nearmiss and accident investigations. On the construction side, Matt will provide oversight of construction projects assigned to Pioneer crews or outside contractors to ensure work is performed safely, properly, and in accordance with the cooperative’s rules and practices. He will also be responsible for our distribution system inspection program.

Deanna Wintrow

transferred to the Urbana office of Pioneer upon her promotion to district member service supervisor on Aug. 30. A Pioneer employee since 1994, Deanna was initially a member service representative and in 2009 was promoted to member service representative senior. Deanna has proven herself in interactions with members and in high-pressure situations such as lengthy storms. Her keen analytical skills and process-oriented focus have helped Pioneer improve and become more efficient in billing calculations, rate and revenue validations, and in member-consumer care. She has also trained other member service employees, and as a power user of the cooperative’s information and data processing system, she has supported others across department lines. Some of the applications include load management, mapping, and the automated metering system. Deanna will oversee the member service responsibilities for the Urbana area, supervise two employees, and support the work of engineering’s staking technician in that office.

Working together to combat cyber attacks

Computer hacking is a top news story these days, and for years, electric cooperatives have focused on blocking cyber threats from interfering with the nationwide electric grid of wires and poles that keeps our lights on.

Making such modern miracles happen means joining with another dominant part of today’s world — the internet. The blink-of-an-eye speed of balancing the generation of electricity with your flip of a light switch relies heavily on the electronically connected world. The internet is incredibly useful, but also a target of troublemakers.

Electric utilities know this and work every day through their own offices and national organizations on cyber safety.

You can take smart steps too, to protect yourself. Here are the top tips experts advise to defend against hackers:

Lock the front door.

If you have wireless internet in your home, the traffic comes in through the router. Create a strong password for that router and set a reminder to change the password regularly.

Use a secret code.

Weak passwords make things easier for hackers. A study found the most-used password in 2021 was — you guessed it — “123456.” A more secure option uses combinations of uppercase and lowercase letters, combined with numbers and special symbols like “&” or “!” There are apps to help you remember passwords. A simple old-fashioned notebook can also work, as long as you’re certain you’ll never lose it and no one else has access to it. And be aware that every major internetconnected appliance comes with its own factory-installed password that you should change right away.

Stay vigilant.

If you receive an email with an attachment you weren’t expecting, don’t open the attachment. If you get a message with a link you didn’t know was coming, don’t click it. Even if it’s from a friend, phone them and ask if they sent it — hackers can send messages using your friend’s address.

Stay state-of-the-art.

Your computer and other devices will regularly offer updates — install them. They often contain security updates to protect against the latest cyber threats. And they will come to you directly through your computer, phone, or printer — don’t be fooled by an email or message saying it’s an update. You can also go online and ask about any updates to your device.

This month is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the Department of Homeland Security has titled this year’s theme, “If you connect it, protect it.” That’s good advice for your home — and for the electric grid.

Four Ways to Combat Cyber Threats

1. Periodically change the password for your Wi-Fi router. 2. Use unique codes or phrases to create stronger passwords. 3. Do not click links or open attachments from unknown senders. 4. Update software regularly.

UNCLAIMED CAPITAL CREDITS FORMER PIONEER MEMBERS DUE CAPITAL CREDITS REFUND

Pioneer is requesting assistance to locate former members to refund capital credits due to them. If you have a current address for any of these individuals or business owners or for estates listed on page 21, please contact our member service representatives at 800-762-0997 or by email at memberservicereps@pioneerec.com. If you are a current member and move off of Pioneer’s system, it is important that you keep your address up to date with us. If you are entitled to a capital credits refund, your check will be mailed to you each year. Active members receive a statement showing the amount of their individual capital credits accrual. The money is refunded when it is financially feasible to do so and is designated by the board of trustees.

The Champaign, Miami, and Shelby county boards of Pioneer will meet Oct. 13, 2021, at the Piqua office, 344 W. U.S. Route 36. Each board will make nominations to the board of trustees of Pioneer Rural Electric Cooperative Inc. and to their respective county boards. The three-year terms will be voted upon by the members in February/March 2022. Election results will be announced at the annual meeting March 26, 2022. “Did you hear that?” my daughter, Rosie, asks as we climb a wooden staircase in the Anchorage, a former mansion on the outskirts of Marietta, in southeastern Ohio. “It sounded like a low grumble.” My thoughts suddenly shift from capturing pictures of the 22-room house, which sits atop a hill overlooking Marietta, to a black-and-white photo I saw in a previous room. Could the low grumble be coming from the ghost of the man wearing the white suit? “Douglas Putnam,” I find myself saying aloud. “What? Who?” says Rosie, tightly grasping the worn handrail. “He’s the original owner,” I say. “But don’t worry. I think he’s a friendly ghost.”

A healthy respect for the “other side” is well advised during a visit to Marietta, which dates to 1788 as the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. History and hauntings go hand in hand here, as the city’s storied, well-preserved past provides ghosthunters a spooky yearround playground. Hidden Marietta, a ghost-tour company that offers nine unique experiences around the city, documents the eerie locations where the past meets the present. There are ghost trek tours, a special flashlight tour of the Anchorage, a ghostly tour of the Lafayette Hotel, vintage photo-taking, sites for tarot card readings, even opportunities to use your own paranormal search equipment during overnight stays at the Anchorage, the Lafayette, and nearby Blennerhassett Island.

For some, it’s a scream vacation. “I think there are a lot of people who are into ghosts and spooky stuff and just like to go out and hear the weird and unusual history, and that’s kind of where our passion is,” says Megan Keller, who co-owns Hidden Marietta with four other women. Nowhere in the city is the relationship more prevalent than at the Anchorage, where we may or may not have run into Putnam — the great-grandson of Gen. Israel Putnam, who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War. Douglas Putnam built the Anchorage in 1859 for his wife, Eliza. It’s now the home of the Washington County Historical Society and Hidden Marietta, and a portion of ghost-tour sales goes toward preservation of the old property. Ghost sightings are common at the Anchorage, Keller says. Some report seeing children. Others see Putnam, once the wealthiest man in Marietta, wearing a top hat. Douglas and his brother, David Putnam Jr., were well-known abolitionists in Marietta. “Douglas Putnam fought for the freedom of slaves and for equal rights for women,” Keller says. “Even in his 80s, he went around and petitioned for women to be able to attend Marietta College.” The house served as a private residence until 1962, then operated as a nursing home for 23 years before it was acquired by the historical society. Most who do see and hear a spirit there believe it’s Eliza, the original lady of the house, who died in the home three years after it was built. Her funeral was held there. Ghost
