URE is excited to o er this unique opportunity to members who are interested in learning about what it takes to generate electricity. Members will get a tour of the best-in-class facility and learn all about how it’s been outfitted with state-of-the-art environmental controls.

The Cardinal Plant is located on the Ohio River in Brilliant, Ohio. Buckeye Power’s Cardinal Plant provides power to the 24 electric cooperatives in Ohio. The plant has invested millions of dollars into environmental upgrades — making it one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants.

The 2023 Cardinal Plant Tour is scheduled to take place Wednesday, Sept. 13. This scenic, one-day trip is free to URE members and includes an interesting and informative guided walking tour of the plant.

Since the power plant can be a potentially hazardous area, tour participants must be at least 12 years old, unless specifically authorized. Assumption of Risk and Release of Liability Forms will need to be signed. There will be a considerable amount of walking, several flights of stairs, and going through some hot and dusty areas. Members with health concerns, those who require assistance walking, or those who cannot walk more than a half-mile without resting should not take the tour.

We take this opportunity to bid a fond farewell to Joe Love as he retires after 35 years in the natural gas industry, 23 of them with URE. Joe’s professional journey began in 1988, when he joined a natural gas public utility in northeastern Ohio as supervisor for field operations. Little did he know that this would be the start of a prolific career.

In 2000, Joe joined URE as a contractor/consultant. His expertise and dedication quickly earned him a permanent role, and in 2004, he became the natural gas manager of Community Energy Resource Cooperative (CERC), URE’s natural gas division.

Throughout his tenure, Joe’s responsibilities encompassed a wide range of vital tasks. He oversaw new construction, system maintenance, and compliance with federal rules and regulations. As a liaison with various entities, including federal and state regulators, the Ohio Gas Association, and other natural gas companies, Joe played a crucial role in maintaining strong industry relationships. His contributions to material and equipment procurement and contract management exemplified his invaluable role within the organization.

Among Joe’s many accomplishments, one stands out prominently: his instrumental role in the early development of CERC. He was involved in its inception beginning with only 80 members and the original mainline to Buxton Meadows, and he played a vital part in its growth into a robust distribution system serving the community.

Joe has been a strong leader within the natural gas industry both locally and within the Ohio Gas Association (OGA). He has served in various leadership roles at the OGA, which provides education as well as advocacy for Ohio’s natural gas companies.

Joe says he has cherished the opportunity to work with exceptional colleagues during his time at URE. He embraced the challenges of wearing multiple hats in a small utility. His attitude has always aligned well with URE’s cooperative values — putting members first, providing outstanding customer service, and being involved in the community.

As Joe embarks on retirement, he looks forward to spending time with family — especially his grandchildren — traveling, enjoying time with friends, and honing his already formidable golf game.
