Huntington Banks to present the player of the year awards in all five spring sports.
Here is a look at the player of the year award winners for the spring season.
Ohio’s Best At What They Do...
BASEBALL Stetson Allie, Lakewood St. Edward Allie capped his high school career in grand fashion. The Eagle senior right-handed pitcher was listed in Sports Illustrated as a Top 10 prospect in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft and then led St. Edward to the D-I title by striking out 16 of the 18 batters he faced in a monumental performance against Cincinnati Elder. A North Carolina recruit, Allie will have to decide between the NCAA and MLB. As a hitter, Allie excels as well. The No. 2 overall high school prospect in the country according to MaxPreps, Allie hit a home run in the seventh inning this year to propel St. Ed past then national-No. 1 Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit. SOFTBALL Paige Myers, Grove City The senior pitcher is sure to earn her third straight Division I first team All-Ohio honor when the all-star team’s are released later this month. Arguably the state’s best pitcher this spring, Myers ended the season with a 24-2 record and 248 strikeouts en route to leading Grove City to its second state tournament in three years. A Miami (Ohio) recruit, Myers had a 0.48 ERA heading into the Final Four where she helped the Bulldogs finish runner-up. BOYS TRACK William Henry, Trotwood-Madison The senior sprinter and Arizona State recruit completed one of the most accomplished careers in Rams history by winning two state titles and finishing second in two other events at the D-I state meet. For the third year in a row, Henry was part of a 1,600 relay team that set an Ohio record in the event en route to the state title. This year, with Henry as the anchor, the Rams bested their own record in the event with a time of 3:13.05. Henry also placed first in the 400 and finished second in the 100 and 200.
BOYS FIELD Justin Welch, Pemberville Eastwood Justin Welch successfully defended his Division II discus title and added a shot put championship at the Division II state track and field meet this past weekend at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Welch’s discus title was his third in a row and his winning effort of

197-1 was an Owens Stadium record. Welch beat runner-up Matthew Hoty of Sandusky Perkins by 16 feet. “I feel accomplished. Three straight: that was a goal since I was a sophomore,” the University of Georgia signee said. “My whole plan since the beginning of the year was to win both. I kind of doubted myself early on, but it all worked out in the end.” It certainly did. Winning a third discus title, and adding another at shot put, Welch said, will help springboard his career at Georgia in the fall. “I will have a lot of momentum going into Georgia. I’m hoping for a smooth transition,” he said. Welch is also the nation’s No. 1 ranked thrower in the hammer throw this spring GIRLS TRACK Chesna Sykes, Columbus Hartley For the second year in a row, Sykes won the 100 and 200 D-II state titles and led the Hawks to a first place finish in the 400 relay. Sykes time of 11.34 in the 100, which she ran at the Marion-Franklin Red Devil Relays, ranks as the third fastest time in the event in the country this spring.
GIRLS FIELD Ali Tolich, Austintown-Fitch A junior, Tolich established herself as one of the country’s top throwers this season by sweeping the D-I shot put and discus titles. Tolich’s specialty is the discus where her PR this spring (160-2) ranks as the third farthest high school throw in the country.
BOYS TENNIS Christopher Diaz, Columbus Watterson The junior added his second state title and dominated the competition at the state tournament. A year after winning a D-I doubles title, Diaz claimed the D-II singles championship by beating defending D-II state champion Joey Fritz of Cincinnati Country Day 6-3, 6-2. Diaz did not drop a set in any of his four state matches. He’s currently ranked the No. 26 junior in the country and the No. 1 junior in Ohio by tennnisrecruiting.net. — OH

fter a relatively calm spring weather-wise, Mother Nature rained down on the OHSAA Spring Sports State Tournaments – literally – this past weekend. Weather forced the postponement of both baseball and softball state championship games and forced the OHSAA to move several of the contests from Saturday to Sunday. The state track meet wasn’t immune to the weather either. But after it was all said and down, this spring’s slate of state finals was a remarkable one. Several state records fell during the state track and field championships and both the baseball and softball tournaments played host to first-time winners and traditional powers who added to their legacies. In tennis, one area of the state dominated all the others. Here’s how things played out…
