On The Cover
Lingle Gold Freaky Girl VG-89 graces the cover of the 2017 membership issue. This hometown champion was bred by Lingle Holstein Farms and was tapped as the Intermediate Champion of the International Holstein Show at the 2016 World Dairy Expo. A complete story on “Freaky Girl” can be found on page 10 and 11. We also want to welcome Kalmbach Feeds as a new advertiser and the sponsor of the Membership Issue! Kalmbach Feeds was founded in 1963 by Milton and Ruth Kalmbach who shared a vision of a new way of doing business. Their goal was to design quality feed products, manufacture those products with the highest quality control procedures in the most efficient facility, and provide the product to the customer at the best possible value. Kalmbach Feeds began as a grind and mix plant in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Milton, a poultry nutritionist, saw that he could improve the quality of products and service by selling bulk feed by the truckload. Today the plant produces a full line of products to meet the needs of every livestock producer - from the large commercial farm, the family hobby, the 4-H member and to the show competitor. Kalmbach Feeds has grown to consist of over 250 employees. See the Kalmbach ad on pages 74 & 75!
Thank you, Kalmbach Feeds!
From The Executive Director By Tom Thorbahn The National Convention is fast approaching, June 28 to July 1 in Bellevue, Washington. Ohio delegates are Ken Janes, Julie Renner, Paul Haskins, Steve Moff, Ryan Welch, and Jason Miley. These Ohio members are your voice at the National Meeting; if you have thoughts or concerns contact them with your input. The Ohio delegation will be supporting Steve Moff as a candidate for the National Board of Directors from Region 3. Steve has for many years been active in our state association, as well as other state wide organizations, and has served as an adult advisor on the National Junior Advisory Committee, a delegate to the National Convention, and member of the board of the All-American Dairy Show. Good luck Steve we are all behind you! The National Convention 2021 Steering Committee has been visiting and evaluating possible cites to host the 2021 National Holstein Convention in Ohio. The committee will soon finalize our selection and send our vision for the convention to the National Association. They will send a committee to review our plans and make sure everything meets their specification. Once they approve it, we will announce to the Ohio membership the site and plans for hosting the National Convention 2021. We hope each of you will consider serving on a committee; this is
Ohio’s opportunity to showcase our great Holsten herds as well as vacation attractions in Ohio to all our fellow breeders across the U.S. As we move into summer, remember to attend your district shows and picnics and county fairs. Whether you exhibit or not these events bring Holstein folks together, so enjoy the opportunity to catch up with each other and enjoy the fellowship of the Holstein fraternity. Entries for the State Fair are due mid June for those who will be exhibiting. Check out the State Fair website for your entries. See you at the fair!
Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

A Message From The President
By Paul Haskins
As I write this, I can’t help but to think about the upcoming national Holstein convention where this issue will be featured along with stacks of several other state publications for the reading pleasure of convention goers; if you are a new reader, please let me be the first to say “Welcome!” with a hearty O-H-I-O! I know that I am more than slightly biased, but I am extremely proud of the quality of our state magazine over the years and hope that you agree as you peruse this issue. What better way to introduce you to the Buckeye state than to feature a pair of our outstanding breeding establishments— good cows and even better people! I feel a special sense of connection since I grew up in District 1 where the Limings have long been highly regarded, and now that we have relocated our farm, I’ve become active in District 7 where I’ve become more acquainted with Ryan and Chelsi Lingle and the rest of the family. Just to let you know, Ryan and Chelsi’s daughters are endlessly entertaining at district board meetings! To see that one family is celebrating 100 years of breeding registered Holsteins while the other has experienced the instant exhilaration of breeding Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo is an interesting bit of compare and contrast, yet both are extremely exciting and equally rewarding events! Congratulations to both the Liming and Lingle families. A big thanks to Kalmbach Feeds for agreeing to sponsor this membership issue; they have been strong supporters of our state and district activities over the years and we appreciate their presence. With their support we are able to provide you with an excellent reference for contact information on all of our Holstein members across the state. Also listed in this issue are the many committees that make this association “go”. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to serve on these committees; along with our board and valued employees it is the lifeblood of our organization. Earlier this spring we had a great convention sale and Dave Gunkelman is looking to build upon that success with the Ohio Summer Celebration Sale planned for Friday night, August 11th at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wooster. Please contact Dave at (330)464-3259 or drgunkelman@ yahoo.com if you have a potential consignment or know someone who does. Enjoy the summer!

From the HAUSA National Directors Dear Holstein Breeders, Holstein USA held its March board meeting on March 30th and 31st in Brattleboro, VT. Prior to the board meeting, the Audit Committee met at the Hartford airport. They reviewed the audit report ending December 31, 2016. HAUSA has a very strong financial position. At the board meeting, a report from the Show Committee approved the judges list and the nationally recognized shows. The performance review of the 2016 business plan was also discussed. Activities and performance followed the trends that developed throughout the year. Participation in Holstein Complete is continuing to increase as more members see its benefits. The IT rebuild continues to be a “work in progress”. Every effort is being made to make this update beneficial to all parties – breeders, field staff, and office staff. This is truly a team effort! The Nominating Committee nominated Boyd Schaufelberger for President. Candidates for VicePresident: John Bierbaum, Minnesota, Jim Burdette, Pennsylvania, and Corey Geiger, Wisconsin. Region Three nominees are Gerald Smith, Illinois, and Steve Moff, Ohio. Dale Drendel, Illinois, is running for his
second term as director-at-large. A By-Law amendment will be presented at the 2017 National Convention concerning animals who are located in or who are imported from countries without an official herd book. For more information before the annual meeting, contact your local board member. Complete results will be given after the convention. Looking to the future, the board and staff continue to discuss the project, “Holstein USA ,Inc. . 2030 and Beyond”. It is obvious that our national association, as indeed, the entire dairy industry, will look very different in the future. This discussion helps us think ahead with an open mind and prepare for the future. As always, your input is very welcome! Your National Directors, Paul Buhr Dale Drendel Mark Kerndt Boyd Schaufelberger, Vice-President

Lingle Gold Freaky Girl VG-89
A Dream Come True By Melissa Hart The first and second place cows paraded onto the colored shavings for the Intermediate Champion of the 2016 International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The competition was deep as Roger Turner led Lingle Gold Freaky Girl VG-89, the first place Senior Two-Year-Old in line for judge Pat Conroy to take one last look to determine his favorites. Conroy walked down the line and tapped the hip of four cows he wanted to consider for his champion. The first and second place senior two-year-olds and the first and second place senior-three-year-olds.
But Freaky Girl’s success began generations before she ever set foot on the colored shavings. “When I was 18, my parents and my Uncle Kevin purchased a cow for me for my graduation present from the Buckeye Classic Sale in Columbus,” Ryan began. Ryan, his wife Chelsi, and his parents Rick and Amy Lingle own Lingle Holsteins in Wooster, where they’ve been breeding Registered Holsteins for nearly forty years. Rick’s brother Kevin, was also involved in the operation before he passed away in January of 2015.
Freaky Girl stood at the head of the line and waited as Conroy walked around all four cows before he finally gave Turner a high five and Freaky Girl a rub on the head, making her the Intermediate Champion for owners Budjon Farms and Peter and Lynn Vail of Lomira, Wisconsin and breeder Ryan Lingle of Wooster, Ohio.
The cow that Rick, Amy and Kevin purchased was a Windstar daughter consigned by Delbert and Heather Yoder and Oceana Holsteins. As a 2-year-old she went VG and Ryan bred her to Comestar Outside producing Lingle Outside Famous EX-93 2E. She was the first cow Ryan ever bred and she was the matriarch to multiple lines of excellent daughters who average 92 points across the board.
Sitting in the stands, Ryan watched, as a cow he bred, won at the Big Dance and couldn’t believe his eyes.
With nine excellent daughters, “Famous” was the dam to an EX Atlas daughter, two EX Goldchips, one at EX-90 and the other

at EX-91, an EX-91 Durham daughter, an EX-93 Racer daughter, two EX Atwoods, one at EX-91 and the other at EX-92, an EX-92 Stormatic, an EX-94 Dundee and several VG daughters “The cow family has transmitted phenomenally, I don’t know how to explain it, I’m just lucky I guess,” commented Ryan. The Dundee, Lingle DD Fearsome EX-94 2E, was shown as a heifer and was AllOhio Junior Yearling and then went on to win the Mideast Spring National as a Junior Two-year-old. Flushing her to Goldwyn, the first and only offspring, at that time, was Lingle Gold Freaky Girl. “She was a pretty nice calf and my neighbor was interested in buying her after she won junior champion at our District 7 Holstein show,” commented Ryan. “It was probably the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make,” Ryan explained. “The Dundee was always my favorite besides her mother, the Outside, so I made the decision to sell her to Kevin Doeberiener, Lindsey Bowen, Michael Heath and Duane Cole.”
Dundee to the UK and Spain. Overall, we’ve had a lot more interest just because of that success.”
The Lingle Family from left: Ryan and Chelsi with daughters Aubrey and Alaina, Amy and Rick Lingle. As a winter calf she was third at the Ohio State Fair and she stayed home that fall. Then she came back as a winter yearling the spring of 2015 and was first at the Mideast Spring National Holstein show in Columbus, she won her class at the Ohio State Fair, and finished the 2015 show season standing third at Madison and was named Honorable Mention All-American Winter Yearling. A month before she was due to calve, Doeberiener took her back to Lingle’s to calve her in and when she did, Ryan knew she was “pretty impressive.” “I’ve calved in a lot of heifers and you know which ones are the real deal. I wouldn’t have told anyone she was going to win Madison, those are big words. But I knew she was something special,” explained Ryan. He milked Freaky Girl for a couple of months before she was sold to Budjon Farms and Peter and Lyn Vail of Wisconsin. She started the 2016 show season with a win at the New York Spring Show in Syracuse. Three weeks later she was second at the Wisconsin Spring Show and three months later she was third at the Wisconsin Championship Show. When October rolled around Freaky Girl was headed to the 50th Anniversary of World Dairy Expo. The gold shavings were sparkling, a celebratory feel was in the air and Ryan and his wife Chelsi, walked through the barn to see how Freaky Girl looked, “We thought she looked good but I’m not the type of person to brag about that, my dad taught us to keep our mouth shut.” The Lingles took their seats in the coliseum
with thousands of other spectators to watch one of the greatest Holstein shows on earth. “When her class came in, I thought the cow looked phenomenal but I didn’t want to be biased,” Ryan chuckled. “She started out second and then worked her way into first and we were just hysterical.” He continued, “I was on the phone with my dad the whole time, we were speechless. It was quite a moment. I’ll be honest with you, there were a lot of tears shed.” Freaky Girl wasn’t done yet, she was on the slate to come back in for Intermediate Champion. She stood on the gold shavings while judge Pat Conroy circled around to make his final selection. “When she was named Intermediate Champion, there were a lot of people sitting around me that I didn’t even know but they all congratulated me and one of my good friends, Eric Havens, was on the phone with me and we were just really excited. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Ryan added, “This is something you dream about but you never know if it will ever happen or not.” That win at World Dairy Expo created great interest for Lingles genetics. “It has done a lot for me in terms of my breeding program, we’ve exported eggs out of the
Lingle Outside Famous EX-93 2E
The cow family has not only transmitted well, but they have milked well, are extremely high in butterfat and “have a lot of will to live.” Ryan explained, “They are big cows, have a lot of width of chest, width through their rumps and are great dispositioned.” He continued, “They are just strong willed cows with a will to live.” Ryan credits this to the sire stack and said, “Comestar Outside, in my opinion, is one of the greatest breeding bulls ever and then the Dundee x Goldwyn is the magical cross. You throw those three together and then add on the Windstar and the Broker behind her and you’ve got a great package.” Ryan added, “There’s a lot of Starbuck in that pedigree and he was a great breeding bull as well and I think they are just stronger cows.” Longevity headlines the family as Ryan pointed out, “The Outside is still here, out on pasture at 15 years old. She’s an old grandma cow but can still hold her ground.” Rick Lingle has built his life around breeding and milking cows and he told Ryan, “Out of all the years I’ve milked cows, that cow family consistently produces the correct kind of cows. There aren’t a lot of cow families that can do that year after year.” Freaky Girl’s maternal sister, Lingle Atwood Foxxy is now EX-92 with a maximum score of EX-94 in the mammary. A March ‘17 full sister to Freaky Girl is sparking interest but Ryan isn’t sure he wants to sell her. “I want to keep just one, but I don’t know if I will.” Commenting on the day Freaky Girl was named champion, Rick Lingle concluded, “It was like a dream come true, something my brother and I have worked for all our lives. And before my brother, Kevin, passed away he told Ryan, ‘“Famous” will put you on the map before it’s over,’ and she did.”

The Importance of Registration Papers in My Life Recently a question on Dairy Agenda Today asked ”Are registered dairy cattle worth the added cost on your operation?” While I cannot answer that question for anyone else, perhaps I can explain to you what owning registered dairy cattle has meant to me. Years ago because of a registration paper I was allowed to join a boy’s 4-H livestock club here in Carroll County. Thanks to a ruling by some male chauvinist somewhere, in those days girls could only show registered dairy cattle, boys could show grades.
dressed up in suits, with their wives in evening gowns. I was in awe of them and literally afraid to speak to them! At the luncheon the next day we were seated at tables of eight. There was a well know breeder who had bulls at COBA and his wife, a professor from Ohio State University and his wife, a couple I had never met before, and daughter Cindy and I from our unknown herd of twenty (20) registered Holsteins located in the hills of Carroll County! They were all warm and friendly, made us feel welcome and a part of the Ohio Holstein Association.
I can still see that small, neat red barn that Having registered Holsteins allowed us to housed only seven milking registered Holsteins. Standing in the top ten was a great accomplishment and worked all summer with my calves preparing for the 4-H show made you feel that you were doing things right as a Holstein in September. However, it would turn out to be a total disaster breeder. When Cal Wilcox stopped at the farm and asked for a for me. My 4-H advisor knew nothing about showing dairy consignment to a state sale, it meant a great deal. Being able to cattle. I had washed them over and over to keep the white consign to the sales allowed us to have extra income for things clean and had them leading perfectly, however no one told me the milk check wouldn’t quite cover. Built by Louis Young in the 1890s raised generations of passionate dairy producers and is where Lee and Mary Liming live today.
Lou-Ida Farm: 100 Years & Counting By Melissa Hart

In the Northeast corner of Ohio, just down the road from one of the largest General Motor plants, on the banks of Lake Meander in Lordstown, you’ll find a Registered Holstein herd that has been breeding great cows since 1917. Seven generations span one century of the family farm named Lou-Ida Farm. Louis and Ida Young purchased the farm in 1890 and named it Lou-Ida Farm. Their son Lamar took an interest in dairy cattle and in 1917, their Registered Holstein herd was established. Upon graduation from The Ohio State University with a degree in Animal Husbandry, Lamar came home and joined the farm that not only raised cattle but Registered Percherons and purebred sheep. Lamar and his wife Lillian established the foundation of 100 years of Registered Holsteins with building blocks of sires like King Valdessa Pontiac Beets, Carnation Dispatcher, Carnation Lou-Ida Lad, and Pinehurst Klazerina Leader. “My dad used to get most of our bulls from Carnation Farms. They would send him pictures of the bulls and he would study them to decide who he wanted to use,” commented Mary (Young) Liming, his daughter in whom he establish the stronghold of passion for dairy cattle. Mary passed through the same rites of passage as most young kids on the dairy farm. As the only child, she filled the role of daughter and son for her dad and began showing cattle in 4-H at the local and county fairs. Her father gave her the job of registering all the livestock on the farm, a job she continues to do today. Having registered livestock was important to Lamar. “My dad always said, the animals had to be registered, whether it was sheep, pigs, cattle or horses, they all
also helps out on the farm. Their two children, Louis and Marlena grew up very involved with the farm and both have shown interest in coming back to Lou-Ida. “Louis is applying to Pharmacy School and Marlena is in Health Management and they both love the farm,” commented Mary. Staying on the family farm for 100 years is no easy feat. Mary credits her father’s love for the cows that was passed down through the generations and the fact that the farm has never had to be split and sold to satisfy uninterested family members.

Este had to be registered. And there’s a great deal of satisfaction knowing what they are and being a student of the pedigree.” Mary added, “For the little cost of the paper, it’s worth it and if you get $100 more for the animal then you’ve more than paid for the cost of registration.” As Lamar became involved in the Ohio Holstein Association as a board member and then as President in 1956-1958, Mary was close behind as she was named Ohio Holstein Queen in 1956 and enjoyed traveling to national conventions with her father and meeting famous breeders from other parts of the country. Lamar and Mary bred their first excellent cow in the early 1950s and from that time on, they classified regularly, believing that using the available tools would improve their genetics. The Lou-Ida Herd has received the Progressive Breeders Registry (PBR) award for fifteen years and has a current BAA of 108.2 Mary Young married Lee Liming in 1965 and Lee came to LouIda Farm when his family’s farm was sold for coal mining. “Lee was raised on sheep and beef cattle, I had to make him into a dairyman,” chuckled Mary. Together they continued to develop the Holstein herd along with horses and a flock of purebred sheep, mainly Columbia and Oxfords. “We were probably one of the few farms that had grand champion in three species at the Ohio State Fair.” Mary continued, “We had the champion Holstein bull, back when they used to show bulls, my granddaughter, Marlee, had champion Quarter Horse and we’ve had grand champion in several of the sheep breeds.” Mary’s enthusiasm for breeding good cows was infectious and her son Lamar caught the bug. Mary said he loves the cows and was the one who introduced the Brown Swiss into the herd. His Delta Theta Sigma fraternity brothers at The Ohio State University, who were Brown Swiss breeders, thought he should have some brown cows so he bought his first calf at the fall sale, consigned by Griesheimer Brothers. That calf developed into a great cow but she only gave them bulls. They purchased another heifer from Griesheimers dispersal and she went on to become a 4E cow and her daughter was also 4E and her Agenda granddaughter is also excellent. Lamar married his wife, Estell who is a Nurse Anesthetists and
“My dad was so enamored with the cows and he instilled it in me and of course I’m the only child, so I had to be the son too. I’ve had a great love for the cows and I’ve instilled that in Lamar.” Mary added, “Of course, my father had a construction company as well, so that helped with the farm. And I taught school for ten years and that helped. And not having to break up the farm helps to keep the farm together.” Quality livestock of any breed and specie are valued at Lou-Ida. One of their most exciting events that happened with the Brown Swiss was the day their Stunner bull was delivered. The owners of Old Mill E Snickerdoodle EX-94 5E were transporting the famed Brown Swiss cow to World Dairy Expo and delivering her son Stunner on the way. They took “Snick” off the trailer to let her graze and get milked. Lou-Ida had never welcomed such a famous cow at their farm. Because the surrounding area has been developed over the years, the water supply for Lou-Ida farm comes from the municipal water system across the road. “It’s a beautiful reservoir and the whole farm is supplied by it,” Mary added. Mary was named the 2014 Ohio Holstein Woman of the Year for her contribution to not only the farm and her family but to the Ohio Holstein Association. She communicated that one of the most valuable gifts of being a part of the Ohio Holstein Association has been the people that you meet and working together for a common goal. Mary concluded in times like these, with low milk prices and increasing inputs that it takes a lot of love and dedication to last in the dairy business, “It’s been a nice long ride, you always wonder how long it’s going to last and we hope that we can continue.”

Agri-Graphics photographer Kathy DeBruin was working near Wooster, Ohio, taking photos of an EX-92 Damian at the farm of Jacob Schlabach D-7, when his daughter, Laurie Beth shared a poem with Kathy and she shared it with us. By Laurie Beth Schlabach Black and white are dad’s favorite colors And I think how could you get any duller? He prefers black and white to a beautiful horse. Unless it’s a skunk or Bingo of course. As for me, I prefer blue, purple or pink. For those are clean and they surely don’t stink In case you might think why are black and white “Wow!” They stand for one thing – a HOLSTEIN COW!
Ohio Holstein Marketing Buzz by Dave Gunkelman, OHA Marketing and Sales Manager As I sit here today thinking about writing my first column, I think about how blessed I am to be a part of such a great organization and so many outstanding Ohio breeders, who are well known nationally! In May, I attended the Best Of Triple T & Heath Sale and was so amazed and proud of Nathan and Jenny Thomas to see all of their hard work payoff with such a successful sale. The catalog was packed from cover to cover with breeder’s best cow families. Lots 1 & 2 were from the great “Poppi” EX-95 EEEEE consigned by Triple T Holsteins & Entourage. The next animal that brought a lot of attention to the sale was another great Ohio Breeder consigning Brookview Party Pooper-ET, bred By Eric Havens and consigned by Garrett Havens & Joe Nash. Then we had the Ackley Family
with Ack-Lee Defiant Gaga consigned by Kyle & Kris Ackley. I could go on and on, but the main thing that I noticed is that these breeders have just sold some of their best animals. That is hard to do when you breed a good one, but I do believe that selling your best is the greatest marketing tool for your continued success in the dairy cattle business. Merchandising your best also leads to so much more recognition and opportunity for you as a breeder and gives you the tools to breed the next great one! This summer, Ohio Holstein breeders will have another opportunity to offer their best for sale at the Ohio Summer Sale as we feature our first evening sale on Friday, August 11th in Wooster. The evening will kick off with an old-fashioned ice cream social at 6 pm
with the sale beginning at 7 pm. We are currently looking for the next great one, whether its high genomic, show pedigreed or an outstanding milk cow that will help with a dairyman’s bottom line. If you have a great one you would like to consign to the Ohio Summer Sale contact me or anyone on our sales staff. In closing, I want to wish everyone a safe and successful summer with your family and friends as your traveling to district shows, county fairs and The Ohio State Fair.
Sincerely, Dave Gunkelman Director of Marketing & Member Services 330-464-3250 drgunkelman@yahoo.com OHIO NEWS

the barn saying good morning and sharing all of the extras with anyone that wants. To me these simple memories are some of the most important ones I will ever possess. Now that I am growing up I enjoy being able to look back and realize what a huge impact being in 4-H and showing my cows has really had on my life. At the time as any young teenager would, I am sure I was not impressed with having to give up a few important weekends of my summer, but now I sure am glad my parents gave me no other choice. The responsibilities that I have had because of all of the opportunities my life has been filled with thus far have taught me valuable life lessons and in the end made me the person that I am today.
Hello Everyone! As the school year comes to an end and summer sweeps in, we begin to prepare for the multiple summer shows. Exhibiting animals at district shows has always been one of my favorite parts of summer growing up. The laid-back feel and small town morale allow for a little bit more time to have fun and enjoy the people as well as the beautiful animals around us. My little sister and I have made many memories at these small summer shows. Like it was yesterday, I remember getting lost in our innocence riding around the empty fairgrounds on our bikes that dad allowed us to bring along after some persistent persuasion. District shows are often times for trial and error trying to get the final show string narrowed down for the national shows later in the year. Because of this, these shows are the place where dad finally let me begin to learn the “tricks of the trade. Washing all by myself for the first time, getting to learn how to clip, and annually breaking the small calf that dad warned me I should start working with weeks ago to lead. At the larger shows like Spring Expo and State Fair when my sister and I were younger we were lucky to be able to walk to the next isle over without having to bring an adult with us. I always loved being at district shows so much because I was allowed to walk wherever I wanted to check things out. As you already know from my last article the friendly people are one of my favorite parts of being involved in showing. At our District 3 show my mom always goes to Dutch Valley on show morning and brings back cream sticks and glazed donuts. My sister and I always walk around
shows are being held, or while you are sitting down after finally getting everything settled in; I ask that you take time to appreciate the privilege that we were given to care for our beautiful Holsteins. Good luck to everyone at District Shows and State Fair! I look forward to seeing you all soon! If there is any event you would like for me to attend please feel free to contact me at (330) 401-5433 or vtdeam@gmail.com.
Being Queen this year I am going to have the honor of traveling to a large number of district shows all around Ohio. With each day that goes by, I continue to get more excited to meet new people who share the same love of Holstein cows as me. As you are preparing to travel to the various fairgrounds where these

OHIO HOLSTEIN WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2017
became part of Miley Holstein Farms more than 30 years ago. Since then, Diana has been an indispensable resource both at the farm and in the Ohio Holstein industry. For years she has done morning and evening calf chores, even while pregnant with both her children. While her children were young, she taught them the value of hard work by always making sure they knew chores must be done and calves taken care of before it was time to play. In addition to daily calf chores, she has also been in charge of the family farm bookkeeping for over 30 years.
“Diana was a 4-H advisor for Cream of the Crop 4-H club for many years, and as active parent ringside for many more.
