From Your Executive Director By Tom Thorbahn
Fall is swiftly marching forward, fall decorations of pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and fall mums, combined with the cooler weather make us shudder at what comes next. As we move into fall the association office is working hard on membership. You should have gotten your membership notice in October. This year we are asking members to consider the option of receiving their membership invoice through the mail, by fax, or your email account. There will be a place on the new membership card for you to mark your preference, if it is not marked you will continue to receive your notice by mail. We can save the association some postage costs by using an email address or fax number. Members can also receive billings from the association for ads in the Ohio News, as well as any other business you do with the association by using these methods, but please, make sure you notify Diana. When you fill out your membership card make sure you include your email address or a fax number if you would like to use these options. The Fall Sale is fast approaching, and will be held on November 21 in Wooster. This sale will focus primarily on fresh cows and springers. Dave and the sale committee will be putting together some great consignments; it will be a great opportunity to add a great young cow or some late fall milk to your herd. Call Dave or any

The board has discussed ways to begin raising funds for Ohio’s turn to host the National Convention in 2021. One of the ways will be to seek contributions from the membership; asking each member or farm to consider donating the cash proceeds from one bull calf to Convention 2021. These contributions will help establish the seed money we will need as we move forward with our preparations. You will be receiving more information through a mailing sometime in November; note all

The very first contribution to Convention 2021 is from U-Dean Farms, the Welch family. They are contributing a great pedigreed heifer calf that will probably be selling at our Convention Sale, with all proceeds going to Convention 2021. A sincere thank you to everyone in the Welch family at U-Dean Farms. Please feel free to call the office, Dave, Jackie, or myself if we can help you with ads for the Ohio News, cattle merchandising, or other needs you may have. Have a safe and productive harvest. A Message From The President
By Randall Kiko
Dear OHA Members, I hope this article finds you doing well. What a wonderful start to the fall season with the great weather. I didn’t make it to the World Dairy Expo, but I sure did follow the excitement through the DAT website. Looks to me that Ohio was represented well. Congratulations to both adult and junior members as well as Nathan Thomas for his outstanding job at judging the open class Holstein show. A frequently asked question among OHA members is how the association is doing financially? The answer is very strong. I would encourage each and everyone of you to try very hard and make plans to attend the Ohio convention in 2016. There is always a full financial report at the annual meeting and you also get to enjoy good fellowship from breeders from across the state. It looks like the 2016 OHA convention will be held in District 3 near the Dover/New Philadelphia area. Plans are in the making. Please remember if you have cattle to sell privately or to consign to an auction contact Dave Gunkelman our Director of Marketing. Dave is very motivated and is wanting to do great things. Our summer sale this past August was a success. Dave encouraged us to use an online bidding website called cowbuyer.com. We did, and five animals sold through the website with at least seventy other bids being placed! Congratulations Dave on a job well done. I hope to see all of you November 21 in Wooster, Ohio for our fall quality sale. Our junior members are out selling raffle tickets for a fund-raiser. This year’s marquee item is a new John Deere Gator. Please hunt down a junior member for tickets, or call the office if you haven’t already purchased one. As always, continue to support the association and each other. God Bless, Randall Kiko

What Does Thankful Feel Like? By Jackie Bickel, Ohio News Editor
It’s a question that was asked of me by my third grade teacher, Mrs. Dawson, back in 1978. We were supposed to draw a picture describing what it felt like to be thankful.
…a kiss on the forehead …the sounds of little paws running across the house to meet you when you open the front door every night (two-legged and four-legged) …the rounded back of a tiny baby scrunched up sleeping as you hold them heartbeat to heartbeat
As an eight-year-old, I drew my Mom and Dad; my pony, Goldilocks; my stuffed dog, Frumpy; my best friend, Beth McKinney and a box of ice cream sandwiches. A few years ago, I found this faded drawing while I was rooting through my mom’s back room and was amazed that she had saved one of my earlier “works of art.”
…zipping a pair of pants, dress, skirt…that hasn’t fit in a while (thanks to those third grade ice cream sandwiches)
Thirty-seven years later, I have changed my perspective on the feeling of thankfulness, but I’m not going to share it in a drawing. Even after my parents sent me to college to be a graphic designer, my people still look like something from the Planet of the Apes.
…hot water at just the right pressure beating down on your head in the shower
For me, thankful feels like... …that moment when the sun shines, even though it’s still raining, and you feel the warmth and the water on your face at the same time …coming home to your husband cooking dinner after you worked a 14-hour day
…holding hands …locating a phone charger before your battery dies …a church family that understands why you can never get to worship service on time …low somatic cell counts
…a text message from your brother and sister when you need to hear from them the most …the beat of the music that makes you dance …having family for neighbors …your mother checking in on you to make sure that you are okay, because she hasn’t heard from you in a week …being a grandparent
…finding the perfect gift for everyone on your Christmas list before Christmas Eve
…the breathtaking view of the ocean…or your favorite mountain…or the wide open sky after you haven’t seen it in a while
…your children asking for your advice, and actually putting it into practice
…watching your firstborn getting ready to graduate high school
…paying every bill that is due because you have more paycheck than debtors
…laughter
…having the parlor clean as the inspector pulls in
…grace
…finishing the magazine with the right number of pages on the day that it’s due …the sound of the engine on your car turning over on a cold morning …watching your favorite cow having another heifer
…tears …a hug …forgiveness …prayer …silence
…being offered a space in line at the store in front of another because you only have a couple things and they have a cart full
As I’m embarking on my second year as your Ohio News Editor, thank you for your support, advertising and readership. I want to wish each of you a Thanksgiving Season full of blessings and moments of thankfulness.
…eye contact and a smile in a room full of people looking at their phones
And, my stuffed dog, Frumpy, still sits on my dresser, much to the chagrin of Donald.

by Barb Lumley A trip to the summer kitchen once again resulted in an old copy of Holstein World coming back to the main house so that I could reminisce. This time it was the March 25, 1975 Brood Cow issue. There was lots of news about registered Holsteins 40 years ago, as well as quite a bit of information about Ohio. Sunnyside Ella Loraine Noble 3-E 93 graced the cover and was pictured at 15 years of age. Owned by Sunnyside Dairy Farms, Valders, Wisconsin, she had just completed milk records totaling over 200,000 pounds. She carried a well-shaped udder that was still above her hocks, was of good size and scale, deep bodied, and showed a lot of strength. She had five sons in A.I. service and had freshened 12 times. Included in the list of new 200,000 pound cows was Ecraso Raven Smokey owned by E. C. Rausch and Sons, Plain City, Ohio and Straight Pine Texal Segis owned by Norbert C. and L. A. DeLoye, Fort Laramie, Ohio. A total of 728 U.S. Holsteins were officially listed with over 200,000 pounds of milk. There were 42 nominations from Ohio for delegates to the Annual Convention of Holstein-Friesian Association of America to be held in Chicago, Illinois June 24-25, 1975. Ohio will be allowed 12 delegates. Holsteins at auction in 1974 averaged $1088 on 17,551 head. Included in the high ranking sales of 1974 was the Select Sires Super Sale held in Columbus, Ohio, selling 64 head that averaged $2313. Other Ohio sales included the Ohio Classic Sale held on July 12, 1974 averaging $1948 on 55 head, with the top seller going for $5100. The Western Ohio Heifer Sale held on March 16, 1974 averaged $975 on 48 head with the high seller at $2100. The Eastern Heifer Sale held at Burbank in April averaged $897 on 50 head with the top seller at $2100. The Ohio Fall Quality Sale held in Burbank averaged $791 on 44 head with a top of $2800. The Breezewood Farms (Gelbke Brothers) Milking Herd and Bred Heifer Sale held October 14, 1974 averaged $910 on 57 head with the top seller bringing $4300. The top selling animal in 1974 was Gene Acres Felicia May Fury EX 97 2E at $80,000. She was sired by Ideal Fury Reflector. This issue included several reports on state conventions, including the Ohio Holstein-Friesian Association 55th 24

NOVEMBER 2015
Annual Meeting held at Scot’s Inn, Columbus, Ohio, on February 14-15, 1975. President Richard Indoe welcomed everyone to the meeting. State Executive Secretary Cal Wilcox gave a report on the association activities. Sterling Timmons, co-chairman of the 1977 National Convention reviewed plans for Ohio’s hosting the convention. The Senior Breed Builder Award went to Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Rausch, Plain City. The Young Breed Builders Award winners were Mr. And Mrs. Dale Ring and Son, Wooster. Distinguished Ohio Youth were Jean Tugend, Jeromesville and Fred Boerger, Marysville. Ohio Holstein Queen was Patty Kruse, New Knoxville and runnerup was Sharon Mangun, Carrollton. Ohio Homemakers officers were Mrs. Ralph Riggs, President; Mrs. Wayne Specht, VicePresident; and Mrs. Larry DeLoye, Scretary-Treasurer. The 1975 officers of the Ohio Holstein Friesian Association were Ivo Osterloh, President; Dale Ring, Vice-President; Wayne Specht, Secretary; and Karl havens, Treasurer. The All-Ohio winners were pictured. It was refreshing to see the cows pictured as they really looked --- not made perfect by a computer! All pictures were black and white and there were a lot of them. There were numerous articles about cows and cow families. There was an article by M. S. Prescott on Gold Medal Dams. As of February 28, 1975 there were 68 Gold Medal Dams in Ohio. Wisconsin led the list with 248. The leading sire of Gold Medal Dams was Osborndale Ivanhoe. An article on Problems of the Dairy Industry was written with excerpts from a speech given by John C. York, general manager of Eastern Milk Producers Association. The major problem was the same as it is today---- the price the dairy farmer receives for his milk. The Homerville Holstein Farm Milking Herd and Bred Heifer Dispersal scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 1975 was advertised and included three pages of pictures and information. Homerville Holsteins were owned by auctioneer J. O. Fenstermaker and Family. Numerous other sales and dispersals were advertised. There was 164 ads in the magazine and most were breeder ads. As I went through the magazine, the 210 pages brought back a lot of memories. Registered Holstein breeders were very active in their state organizations and proud of their cows and their achievements with them. Although there have been a lot of changes in 40 years, the problems faced by dairy farmers are much the same. The past is behind us, the future lies ahead. The Holstein breeder and the Holstein cow will continue to create their share of special memories in 2015 and beyond.

Ohio’s Statewide 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl by Bonnie Ayars
COLUMBUS, OH — What is the major buffer for maintaining optimum rumen pH? A clever Dairy Quiz Bowl participant presses the buzzer, is recognized by the moderator and provides the answer as saliva. That is just how a small portion of the Ohio 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl event was played this year. On June 17, coaches and team members traveled from all over the state to the Ohio and Nationwide 4-H Center to participate in this event. It includes both a Senior and a Junior division. Some are new at the competition, and others have been coming for many years. However, everyone is willing to share camaraderie and a competitive spirit with each other. After a light breakfast with milk, participants complete a test to determine brackets. It is double elimination, so everyone has an opportunity to play the game and be matched up with their rivals in a dual
Case skid steers and compact track loaders have been known for power and productivity. Now, we’ve outdone ourselves. Twelve all-new models deliver increased performance and power for every task, from lifting bales to mucking stalls. Not to mention industry-leading hinge-pin height to help with feedlot work. No matter what’s on your list of chores, the new Case Alpha Series delivers. And they do it with a larger, roomier cab—the most comfortable on the market.
Senior Division winning team: Champaign/Logan/Auglaize Counties represented by Ella Jackson, Kadey Starkey, Brennan Topp
that includes wisdom, quick recall, strategy and some fun. With 15 volunteers on hand to manage the event, there are moderators, scorekeepers, timekeepers, door monitors and bracket managers for both divisions. Each plays a special role in the successful management of the day’s activities. With more teams than in the past eight years, it was round after round of nearly 600 toss- up and team questions that are posed as bonuses. As the day progressed and between rounds, everyone took time for a pizza lunch and then an ice cream bar snack provided by the American Dairy Association and Ohio Dairy Producers. This year, the Juniors had the opportunity to observe the final Senior round that determined the champion. Then everyone relocated and watched the final Junior round! “The thankful heart opens our eyes to a multitude of blessings that continually surround us.” ~James E. Faust
Fall is here and Thanksgiving is approaching. As I reflect on the year that I have had so far serving as the Ohio Holstein Queen, there are several things to be thankful for. The shows, memories, friends, and events that I have attended have impacted me in more ways than one. I have enjoyed attending the District Shows this summer. It allowed me to connect with many members that I do not see as often, or do not attend the larger National Shows. It allowed me to advocate for the Junior Association and encourage juniors to participate in activities such as State and National Conventions, and Junior activities that the Directors plan throughout the year. Furthermore, I got to see how each District runs their show differently, and brought different ideas back to my District so that we can improve our show. I have enjoyed the memories that I have made with new friends of the Association, as well as the old. One of my favorite memories, so far, was the National Convention. It allowed our Juniors that attended to come closer as a whole. It also allowed us to collaborate and network with other Juniors who share the same passion for the dairy industry.

Most importantly, I am thankful for the opportunity that I have had to serve the Ohio Holstein Association as the 2015 Ohio Holstein Queen. I hope that you all have enjoyed the summer shows as much as I have, and I am looking forward to seeing some of you at NAILE! Once again, feel free to contact me if there is anything that I can answer, or if there is something that you would like me to attend. My email is mathewsemma20@yahoo.com.
Back to School with FUTP60 fuel up to play 60 To kick off the school year and help make more dairy foods available to students, ADA Mideast has awarded Fuel Up to Play 60 grants this fall to 51 schools, totaling $169,000, of which $50,000 is from outside fundraising efforts. Fuel Up to Play 60 grants are used for equipment such as mobile breakfast carts, smoothie stations, breakfast bars or other innovative ideas that help drive dairy consumption in schools. Nearly 27,000 students in Ohio and West Virginia will benefit from these dairy-farmer funded grants this fall. Since 2009, dairy farmers have provided $1,293,000 in funding to 391 schools, which helped make dairy and other healthy foods available to 263,706 students.
Grants in action A recent example of how Fuel Up to Play 60 grants are making a difference is in Parma City School District. Schools in Parma, Ohio received a grant last year that increased student milk consumption by 3.6%. Students drank 47,000 half-pints and 2,600 pints of milk, and breakfast participation increased by 205 students a day. FUTP60, created in partnership with the NFL, is the nation’s largest in-school health and wellness program, with more than 73,000 schools enrolled nationwide. Locally, ADA Mideast works with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals to deliver the program in Ohio and West Virginia.
