Spring Update

by Dallas Rynd This past weekend was our state convention, and for those of you who missed it, it was outstanding. Friday’s events opened with a great lineup of sale cattle and a beautiful day. The sale was hosted by the Kiko Family, who had gone to considerable effort to provide a nice place for both the animals and the bidders. Congratulations to the Lang Family, whose Dorcy daughter topped the sale at $16,000. As it turned out, the Dorcy, who had contract interest, ended up just down the road from her home farm. The Brightbill Family, neighbors of the Langs, placed the final bid. The sale averaged $3.441 on 70+ lots. Following the sale, conventiongoers headed to Whiteleather Farms and Campbell Brothers. At Whiteleather Farms, folks were treated to a wonderful meal and a tent filled with 35 head of outstanding cows that traced back to “Miss America,” an Excellent Outside daughter who was standing on the end of the row. At Campbell Brothers, guests were treated to a beautiful herd of cows in a tie stall facility. Both Campbells and Whiteleathers had a group of animals for those who wanted to participate in the judging contest. Friday evening brought the queen’s contest and lots of socializing. Allison Mangun is our new state queen, and I expect you will be seeing her a great deal as show season starts up. Morgan McDonnell is our runner-up. Saturday morning was time for group meetings for the women, the Juniors and the adults. All had interesting business meetings, and the groups came back together for the awards banquet. The All-Ohio and Junior All-Ohio winners were announced, as well as several other awards. Steve Andrews was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for all the time and effort he gives our association. Adam Whiteleather received the Junior Buckeye Breed Builder award. Tom Thorbahn was announced as the winner of the Senior Buckeye Breed Builder award which, as Duane Logan pointed out, “was a long

time coming.” Mary Liming received the Outstanding Holstein Woman award. In one of the most touching moments of the convention, District 2, our hosts, opted to single out one of its own members. Bill McKarns was honored by his peers for his contributions to local, state and national associations. His tireless work allowed animals that would not have been recognized by the Holstein Association decades ago to become eligible for registry, classification and many other programs and awards. As we move through March, we should look ahead to Spring Dairy Expo, which will be old news by the time you read this. Our Spring Sale is scheduled for April 19, and I urge you to attend. As many of you heard at convention time, I have set up a committee to review the needs and wants of our membership as we move forward. I hope each member will take time to consider what you expect from our association and pass that information on to your local board member. We are currently putting together a questionnaire for the membership to identify the things that

you believe are important to you as a member. This will better enable the board to determine what our next steps are to plan for a successful future for our organization.

FROM YOUR REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE… by Glenn Sageser Congratulations on a Great Sale and Great Convention. I was pleased to be a part of them. I am happy to be working in Ohio and am spending about 60% of my time here. I like bringing in national and state memberships. I will be at Spring Dairy Expo through Thursday helping with the judging conference. Tom Thorbahn, 2014 Senior Buckeye Breed Builder Award PHOTO ON THE COVER

From a young age, Tom would follow his father, Lewis Thorbahn, to the barn for the evening milking, and before long, Tom learned to feed the calves. At the age of five, Tom was promoted to record keeping, perched on a milk can at an old desk in the milk house, recording the milk weights for each cow, as well as recording breeding and calving information in the herd register. He soon learned to milk, and by the age of ten could milk the whole herd of 40 head, carrying the milk to the milk house. The herd was all Registered Holsteins, and Tom did all the registrations for the herd. In 1960 his father and Uncle Richard built a new parlor and expanded the herd to 105 head. Tom was “at home” in the barn and was usually doing the milking and chores while everyone else was in the field. Following graduation from OSU in 1971, Tom assumed all aspects of the dairy herd: milking, breeding, nutrition and health care. Over the next few years, the herd went back on official test, and later HIR, breeding the herd to 100% AI. By the late 1970’s, they enrolled in the classification program. During the herd expansion, many grade cows were added to the herd. When HFA adopted the grade ID program, any grade cows in the herd were identified. The herd prefix was “Crimson Lane,” which comes from the old lane lined with red bricks. In the late 1960’s, when Tom’s father and uncle retired, Tom and his younger brother Lewis assumed full management of the farm and dairy. The dairy herd was sold in 2009, a year after Lewis had a disabling stroke. Today, Tom

continues to grain farm 1,000 acres. Tom and his brothers all showed dairy 4-H and FFA projects at the Sandusky County Fair and District 9 Show. In the 1980’s, they also showed at the Ohio State Fair. The Thorbahn brothers are proud to have bred the Reserve Junior All-American Senior Heifer Calf in 1984. The herd has always sold a few animals, but in the 1980’s they began having regular consignments in state and district sales. One of their consignments was high seller at the Ohio Convention Classic Sale. A private sale of a Bell daughter, to Jake Chardon in 1986, provided embryos that founded a prominent cow family for the Veneriette family of northern Holland. This cow family was later featured in a Holstein International article. One of the greatest compliments to a successful breeding program is the excellent performance of animals that are sold into another herd. Tom has bred or developed numerous Gold Medal Dams and Dams of Merit, and many young sires were sent to A.I. from his herd. Two of those bulls were returned to active service at Sire Power. One was in the top ten for milk production in the breed following the bull’s release. When the Tom’s herd was sold in 2009, the RHA was 24,988M, 858F, 780P, with a BAA of 106.5. Tom has been extremely active in the Ohio Holstein Association, serving on numerous committees and offices. He served as treasurer for the 2000 National Convention in Ohio. He is a 40-plus year member of the HFA; has served as delegate to the National Holstein Convention many times; served on the National Nominating Committee; and in 2003, was elected to the at-large position as National Director of the HFA, where he served on the JAC, GAC and

Executive committees. He presently is a trustee and the vicechairman of the National Holstein Foundation. Active as a 4-H leader for many years, he coached the dairy judging team and served on the Sandusky County and state 4-H Extension Advisory Committees. Tom was on the Marketing Panel for the Governor’s Strategic Task Force for the Dairy Industry in the early 1990’s. He has been active on the District 9 board, serving as state director, and on the county dairy board. Tom has also received the Sandusky County Farmer of the Year award and the Outstanding Service Award from the Ohio Holstein Association, along with the Ohio State University Dairy Science Hall of Service Award. Tom and his wife Linda, a retired Fremont elementary art teacher, married 37 years ago at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Tom has been a church council member and officer, Sunday school teacher, usher, worship leader and choir member. Besides cows, singing is another passion of Tom’s. He has sung with the Veracious Voice of Victory Choir and is presently president of the Terra Choral Society. This 120member group, now in its 13th year, performs in Northwest Ohio, and for the second time, will return to participate in the National Memorial Day Festival Concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The choir has presented concerts with guest artists including Elizabeth VonTrapp. This spring they will be working with recording artist Melissa Manchester and record for her new album. Tom and Linda have one daughter, Ashley, a graduate of Capital University with a degree in chemistry. Presently, Ashley is enrolled in professional school at The Ohio State University in the School of Pharmacy, working toward her doctorate degree.

Adam Whiteleather, 2014 Junior Buckeye Breed Builder Award by Adam Whiteleather

PHOTO ON THE COVER

To my mother, Su Lin Boudler, I am known as Adam John. To my friends in Columbus, I am Whitey. Here at 8208 Bayard Road, I am sometimes anything but my own name. I was born and raised at Whiteleather Hoslteins within a large, close-knit family. With two uncles, nine aunts, 23 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, you can only imagine what the Columbiana County and District 2 show days are like. Some of my first farming memories are at the age of six. My grandfather, Ludwig, assigned strict duties to me of picking up trash and feeding baby calves. However, the only goal I had was to make sure that I rode with dad, Glenn Whiteleather, when planting season started. Throughout my years as a “youngster,” I have been involved with Registered Holsteins as a 4-H’er showing at the county fair and minimal district shows. I did okay, but cows didn’t really give me that “itch” yet. At the age of 16, I was more of a tractor guy at the time, and my only priority was planting corn, combining, raking and baling hay. After high school, my strong interests in agricultural industry lead me to pursue a B.A. in Science and Agriculture, accompanied by an Associate’s degree in Construction at The Ohio State University. I had worked closely in the past with the Soybean Research Lab as an intern, and my part-time job was on The Ohio State Grounds Crew Team. There I met a great friend and future cow partner named Charlie Henry. We were responsible for prepping fields and game day setup on The OSU Buckeye football field. While performing maintenance on irrigation lines and ground equipment, Charlie always wanted to talk about “cows.” His knowledge of bulls and information about his own herd inspired me to learn more about my family herd back home. After graduation, I realized that my life didn’t have to revolve solely around harvesting. I started working with the cows on a daily basis. I began giving I.V. treatments to sick cows when needed, trimming hooves, vaccinating, breeding and helping with the pregnancy checks. Like Grandpa, mating cows is one of my favorite things to do and is the foundation of the herd today. Lawrence and I are dedicated to studying our cows and using the best bulls combined with high profile genetics to maintain that solid pedigree line. It is self-gratifying to watch a two-year-old freshen in with a great frame and mammary system and know that I was responsible for choosing the mating. Here at Whiteleather Farms, we are currently milking 500 Registered Holsteins. Our rolling herd average is 26,127 lbs. of milk, 964 lbs. of fat, and 807 lbs. of protein. We are continuing to grow at a rapid rate due to all of our flushing/embryo transfer work. We enjoy working with our herd and take pride in flushing. I am very excited to share our growth and development of all our young ET’s. Some of these ET’s have seen the show ring a time or two. Due to our great success in flushing by Dr. Nate Steiner, we have been more active in the show ring than ever before.

The highlight for me had to be during the 2013 Spring Dairy Expo week. Wednesday, March 27, was the arrival of our first child, Stella Jane. Thanks to some great friends and a VERY understanding wife, Jessica, the cows made it down to Columbus and so did I! I made it down the night before the show, and cows were resting comfortably and could not have looked any better. I cannot give enough credit to Charlie Henry, Todd Unkefer and Rudy Kiko. Whiteleather Holsteins ended up winning Premier Breeder for the first time. Through my constant studies, work experience and life on the farm. I have gained a strong knowledge of both the dairy and the agricultural business. In the past, I have been elected to serve on the Dairy Advisory Committee for my Columbiana County. I am currently the state board representative for District 2 of the Ohio Holstein Association, and I serve as a representative on both the Show and the Sale committees. I also serve on the DHIA committee. In 2008, I had the opportunity to buy a 128-acre farm in Salem, Ohio, where I custom raise heifers and dry cows for other dairymen. I thank them for their trust and their business. One of the best parts about this industry is the people you meet and the friends that you make. I was truly surprised and honored to receive this award from the pool of talented young dairy farmers. I didn’t do it without the help and the guidance of several great people; first and foremost, I have to thank my wonderful wife and daughter. Although there are more bad days than good, and more long days than short, they support me on more levels than I can count. Thank you to my father, Glenn, for his tenacity and hardworking mentality that I have picked up. Thank you to my mother for

her patience and understanding that I have somehow acquired. My brothers, who have always been there when I needed the most help. Thank you to Lawrence, Betty, Jill and Eve; I appreciate all of your support and understanding, especially on the hectic days! A special thank you to my grandma, Marjorie Whiteleather; she is known as “Grandma” to all that visit the farm, but I am proud to call her my own. She is our matriarch of the family and the heart of Whiteleather Holsteins. Words cannot express my love and admiration for this woman! Thank you to my good friend Nevin L’Amoreaux, who’s always there for support, information and guidance. Also, thank you to Rudy Kiko, Todd Unkefer, Grant Cope, the Henry family, Stan-MarDale/Express Holsteins, Lorawae Holsteins, Buck Owen, Todd Locke and Bryan Whinnery. I would also like to recognize the other board members for all their hard work and dedication to the association. This year has been particularly challenging regarding the state of the association. To Dallas Rynd and Randall Kiko, your persistence and phenomenal work that was done within the past year should not go unnoticed. I am honored to have you as President and Vice-President of the association. To my neighbors, the Kiko Family, you have all been so gracious and eager to help me no matter what; to Joe Stryffler, for giving me the opportunity to buy his family farm and assist me any time I needed it; to Jim Beardsley for all his help; to Hugh and Justin Fraser, who never say no! All of these individuals are irreplaceable, and I hope that I can somehow pay it forward. In closing, I want to thank everyone who voted for me. I’m honored that my peers think that I’m worthy of such a distinguished title. Thank you to all bidders, buyers and owners of Whiteleather cattle.

Ohio Holstein Women’s Report by Kathy Whiteleather Johnson, President

March 7, 2014, was the nicest day of the whole year in so many ways. The weather was sunny and in the 50's; the auction held at Kiko's had so many outstanding Holsteins with buyers from several states; the tours at Campbells’ and Whiteleathers’ were such a pleasant experience, and the activities at the Comfort Inn were enjoyed by all. Those who were unable to attend did miss a great Ohio convention. Please read about it in the upcoming Farm and Dairy, because Susan Crowell editor of Farm and Dairy was there as one of the queen’s judges and also taking lots of notes for the paper. The Ohio Holstein Women would like to thank Katie Lora and her committee for a great 2014 queen contest. Congratulations to Queen Allison Mangun of District 7, daughter of Roy and Lisa Mangun, and to runner-up Morgan McDonnell of District 8, daughter of Kyle and Becky McDonnell. A tremendous amount of work from the contestants, their parents and the committee is required to make the contest a success. Congratulations to Mary Liming from District 2, who was selected as the Outstanding Holstein Women of the Year. Be sure to read her interesting bio found in anther part of this issue. $650.00 was given to each of the two recipients, Allison Mangun and Makayla Conrad, for the scholarship awards. May they both continue their college education and enter into a career in agriculture. America needs more great individuals to meet the agricultural needs of the country. Allison Mangun also received the Memorial Scholarship. Thanks to these committees: Cow Auction, Farm Tours, Food, Decoration, Table, Juniors, Queens, Scholarship, Women of the Year, Dairy Bar, Men’s, Awards, and Fun Auction, and to any other committee I may have omitted. It takes many people and their great efforts to make the convention successful. It is always a lot of work, and yet so rewarding when everything comes together. If you missed this year, start making plans for next year. Also, a big thanks to the officers, Vice-President Betty Whiteleather, Secretary Sara Twining and Treasurer Lisa Mangun.

Mary Liming of Lou-Ida Farm, 2014 Ohio Holstein Woman of the Year by Lamar Liming

PHOTO ON PAGE 14

My mother, Mary Liming, was born and raised on our farm, and this year marks 97 years of raising registered Holsteins there. She was an only child; therefore, she was my grandfather’s “son.” When she joined 4-H, she became very active with the cattle. Her father, Lamar Young, was a contractor besides running the farm. He gave her the job of registering the calves, which she continues to do. She loved the cattle, and to this day, her passion is the cattle. Seldom does a day go by that she has not been to the barn. She was in the 4-H Dairy Club, and she showed at the local fairs and the Ohio State Fair. At that time, our Trumbull County cattle were grouped together and taken to Columbus on two railroad cars. Trumbull County was always written up at the State Fair, because it was the only county club who brought their cattle to the fair on the train. She was also in her mother’s cooking club and on the Junior Fair Board. She was the Ohio Holstein Queen in 1956. In later years, she composed words to the “Miss America” melody to be used for the “Miss Futurity” song. She was happy that she and 12 | OHIO NEWS | 3-4/2014

Greta Cummings were never taken to jail for the copyright infringement. She attended several national Holstein conventions with my grandparents, Lamar and Lillian. She was so impressed by meeting the famous breeders of that time at the national meetings. My grandfather Lamar was a state director and was the Ohio Holstein President from 1956 to 1958. Mary accompanied him when he attended meetings and to meet so many good breeders. At this time in her life, Mary was the church organist. My mother graduated from Youngstown State University, where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She became a fourth grade teacher. Along with teaching, she was a 4-H club advisor. She married my father, A. Lee Liming, and they lived on Lou-Ida Farm. His farm had been sold for coal. Even though busy with this life, promoting Holsteins was always what Mary tried to do for others. She encouraged farmers to register their cattle, would help draw the cattle of others, and helped others complete registration applications. She thought that it was sad not to register a calf. Lamar Young preached the value of registration to her and also the merits of using good bulls. He taught her about pedigrees and their value. Her father was a great student of the breed and loved the cattle. My mother and her father had their first excellent cow in the early 1950’s, and from then on, they tried to classify each time it was offered. They thought that classification and production testing were important tools to use in developing a good herd. This year marks 97 years of raising Registered Holsteins on Lou-Ida Farm. Even though she was busy at home, she tried to be active in church and community. She has served on various boards and committees as well as serving as chairperson of the church trustees. She also has been a member of the Lordstown Garden Club and was chair of the summer garden club show. She belonged to the Lordstown CCL, PTA, Historical Society, District 1 & 2 Ohio Holstein District Clubs, Ohl Family Reunion committee, and in most of these organizations, she was the treasurer. In summary, we all have continued to build our herd with the help of A. Lee; myself, Lamar Liming; my wife, Estell; and our children, Louis and Marlena, who are the seventh generation to live on our family farm. Each is interested in improving and promoting the Lou-Ida herd because of my mother Mary’s enthusiasm and encouragement. Lou-Ida is different from some other farms, as the largest GM plant in the country is on our road. Because of GM locating in Lordstown, city water was available, and our cows now drink city water. Probably because of my grandfather’s love of showing, which his daughter Mary continued, we exhibit our cattle at the county fairs. Mary has encouraged her grandchildren and their friends to join 4-H and show our cattle. We also show at the Ohio State Fair. Mary usually is the one who gets the papers in order, and plans and executes the display. She does the accounting using QuickBooks and keeps most of the cattle information on the computer. Her computer work has helped the farm. It has been my pleasure to write this introduction for my mother’s 2014 Woman of the Year Award.

WARD SHOWALTER, OH WILLIAM BURKHART, JR., OH Congratulations to the 14 Ohio recipients of the 2013 PBR Award. In order to qualify for the Progressive Breeders’ Registy (PBR) award, a herd must qualify under the following criteria: • Herd owner must be a member of both their national and state associations, and enrolled in the Deluxe or Premier TriStar options and Herd Classification programs. • Percent B.A.A. for Herd Classification must be in the top 25% of herds classified during the 18month time period just prior to March 1 of the current calendar year. • Must have a minimum of twenty 87% RHA and higher cows in the milking herd, of which at least 75% bear the herd owner’s prefix. Automatic evaluation of all herds is done annually. The PBR recognition is given to approximately 10% of herds enrolled in the Deluxe or Premier TriStar options. TriStar Herd Mature Equivalent Lactation Averages are adjusted by each state’s average production. A milk component cutoff is based on combined fat and protein, which is calculated by multiplying the milk cutoff by 3.6% for fat and 3.1% for protein, and totaling the two components. 16 | OHIO NEWS | 3-4/2014

INDIANA Mike JONES

From

National Director

Hello, everyone; what a winter! As I write this, we have had 14 days below zero and 40 inches of snow. I hope everyone has had a good winter, because I know all the problems that go along with cold and snow. I will be heading to the type conference in Wisconsin next week, and then our board meeting is March 20 and 21, and then to the judges conference and the Ohio Spring Show the last week of March. On other Holstein news, at yearend there were 278,703 animals in 1,831 herds enrolled in Holstein Complete as compared to 2012. This is one percent decrease in animals and a one percent increase in herds. There were 360,180 animals registered, which is a decrease of one percent. Seventy-five percent of the animals registered were less than three months old. Transfers were up 84% with a total of 120,698 animals being transferred due to the fact that we had one herd doing a family transfer, which amounted to 46,583 animals.

Without this herd, we still transferred 74,115 animals, which is an increase of 13%. In the Basic ID program, 219,505 animals were identified. This is a seven percent increase over last year. There were 701 new adult members and 936 new junior members, an increase of 11% for adults and a three percent decrease in junior members. In the classification program, we evaluated 224,908 animals in 4,705 herds. This is a two percent decrease of animals and a three percent

decrease in herds. In the SET program, 81,558 animals in 5,222 herds were evaluated, which makes a decrease of eight percent in animals I hope to see many of you in Columbus; not only is this your Spring Show, but Ohio will be hosting the HAUSA judges conference that coincides with the show. On a personal note, if I don’t see you in Columbus, I want to invite you to our dispersal on April 5. Stay warm!

David Trotter, AGA President and Interim Executive Secretary, said, “We are excited about the experiences that Lewis Jones brings to AGA and strongly believe that we are heading in the right direction for the future of the Guernsey breed and membership with the management expertise he brings to the organization.” A graduate of The Ohio State University, Jones currently oversees the Spring Dairy Expo as show

manager. The Expo presents multiple breed regional and national dairy shows and sales held annually in Columbus, Ohio. For 15 years he was with the State of Ohio Department of Agriculture, where his responsibilities included directing the Ohio Department of Agriculture Dairy Division sanitation program, including the assurance of safe and wholesome milk and dairy products for the consumer. His most recent title was Department Deputy Director. Prior to that, he spent several years as an auditor of milk and products receipts and distributions with the Federal Milk Market Administrator, Federal Order 33, in Columbus, Ohio.

His list of experiences also includes Investment Advisor, and he was an Operations Manager at The Pillsbury Company’s Grain Division. Jones is a lifetime member of the National Dairy Shrine, a member of the Ohio Agricultural Council, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Alumnus of Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity, and has served as a past president and vice president of the National Association of Dairy Regulatory Officials. He is also the recipient of the 2011 Ohio State University Dairy Science Hall of Service Award. Grapevine – continued on page 34

Oxygen Barrier System This easy to use patented “impermeable” plastic reduces loss of silage in bunker silos to less than 5% and virtually eliminates surface mold. In combination with protective tarps, the film is protected from bird, rodent, and UV damage. To complete the system, Silostop sandbags are used on the overlaps. It is not necessary to provide weight over the entire surface so tires are effectively eliminated.

BarbWire Recently the decision was made at Lumley Farms to purchase a piece of equipment. The original idea was to go to a farm sale to check out and possibly purchase a used one. It was Barb Lumley my idea to check on the price of new ones and consider that option before going to farm sales. Since I am the person with extra time on my hands, it was suggested that I do that. So with Farm & Dairy in hand, I began to look for dealers and phone numbers. I soon discovered that some are hard to find, and some of those dealers could use Esther’s help in preparing ads. I then decided to go to the computer and search for dealers, which I found most helpful. However, they should learn the importance of putting brand names in their ads, as well as making it easy to find phone numbers and locations. Next step was calling and asking for a salesman. One receptionist or secretary who answered the phone was very interesting and blunt. Even though it was early in the afternoon, she informed me there was no salesman available, but she could tell me what I wanted to know! She told me the price — period! No details, no would I like a salesman to call, no thanks for calling! One salesman’s question was, “Is the government going to pay for it?” I am not sure how that was supposed to affect the price, but I assured him that they weren’t because if they did they would want to tell me how to use it! He explained that he thought I was calling for some office (maybe the County Highway Department or ODOT). After all, this was a woman calling about a piece of machinery who actually knew what she as talking about. Obviously some man had to have written it down for her! Wrong!! In the process of trying to deal for this piece of machinery, I found some very interesting salesmen. One fellow I talked to on a Friday afternoon proceeded to tell me all about how his week had gone and how tired he was, but he finally did come up with a price for me. I really thought he should have knocked a couple hundred off for the therapy session. One dealer couldn’t help me because their salesman worked someplace else during the day and was only there after 4:00 p.m., and their computer was down, and all the information was in it. So much for the efficiency of computers! There were only a couple of salesmen that I knew personally; most were complete strangers. I will give the guys credit: most were very pleasant and very helpful, but I found that some of them could use a course in public relations. Later on we also visited several dealers. A friendly “Hello, how are you” and a handshake can be very important. I realize that salesmen have bad days, just like

the rest of us, but when approached by someone interested in a deal, please smile and try to be pleasant. And if we just happen to get there 15 minutes before closing time, please don’t act like you didn’t want to see us walk in. After all, we may have driven a long way just to look at your equipment. I am a believer in the importance of public relations, whether selling machinery or registered Holsteins. Greet people pleasantly and be willing to give them some time, even though it might be quitting time or you might have 30 acres of hay waiting to be baled. Selling them the current item they are interested in and future sales may depend on it. If you promise to call me right back with the information I need, please be prompt and don’t take all day to do so. I might have other things to do besides sit by the phone. One salesman never did call me back. I guess he had sold his quota for the month! Please listen to what I want, and don’t try to sell me something else that I don’t want. Advertising is important; people can’t buy from you if they don’t know what you are selling and where you are located. I actually found some owners who do not advertise because they feel they don’t need the business! Rest assured, if I don’t know they are out there, I won’t be buying from them!

The Queen’s Corner by Allison Mangun I am Allison Mangun, the daughter of Roy and Lisa Mangun. This year I am excited to be serving as the 2014 Ohio Holstein Queen. I grew up on a 200cow Holstein and Jersey farm in Burbank, Ohio, with my parents and brother Ben, who recently married Jenessa. I am currently a freshman at The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute with a major in Dairy Science. Upon graduation with an Associate’s degree, I plan to further my education and obtain a communications degree, with the hopes of marketing milk and milk products. I began showing Holsteins as a five-year-old girl. Through the years I have shown and exhibited animals at the Wayne County Fair, district shows, Ohio State Fair, World Dairy Expo and North American International Livestock Exposition. I have always loved meeting new people at the shows and exhibiting quality animals. In addition to showing, I have also been very involved in the Ohio Junior Holstein Association. I have attended numerous national conventions, where I participated in Quiz Bowl and public speaking. As my year is beginning, I am looking forward to the opportunity of meeting new people and sharing my passion, but most importantly representing the Ohio Holstein Association. If you need to contact me, you can reach me on my cell phone at 330-749-9036 or by email at acmangun@gmail.com.
