A Genomic Star

by Joe Miley Greetings once again from Wayne County. It is hard to believe summer has almost passed us by, and we are moving into the fall Joe Miley harvest already. It has certainly been an eventful summer for Ohio Holstein members. The National Convention in Richmond, Virginia, was well attended by Ohio members, delegates and the Ohio Junior Association. If you haven’t attended a National Convention, I recommend it. It is fun, educational and a great way to see great cows and meet Holstein breeders from all over the country. I also would encourage our Junior members to join the trip next year. It is a great way to make friends and contacts that will last a lifetime! Congratulations to all members who participated in our district shows this summer. The quality of the cattle exhibited throughout the state was exceptional. If you missed the Holstein shows at the Ohio State Fair, you missed an outstanding event. The depth and quality of classes was amazing. Another highlight was the Junior Show Grand Champions of all the breeds being included in the Ohio State Fair Sale of Champions for the first time. Thanks to John Spreng, Angi Kaverman and everyone else that made that possible!! The Ohio Summer Sale held August 17 was also very successful. It was very well supported with an average of $3034.18 on 49-1/2 lots. The sale shows a profit to our association of over $8,000. Thank you to everyone who contributed! The Ohio Holstein Board of Directors meeting was held September 6 at the Holstein office. It was great to have 100% of our board present. I will state again that this is a very good board and that everyone’s input and opinions are vital to our association. If anyone has questions or concerns, contact your district representative. I would like to welcome Jennifer Bouton to the board as a representative from District 4. Jenn will begin her term in December. In the General Managers’s report, Don Alexander stated that he and

Esther are working on the Ohio Holstein Association booth for World Dairy Expo. If you get to Madison, be sure to stop by the booth. He also gave a report on the Fall Sale to be held November 19 in Wooster. We are having the sale with the Ayrshire and Brown Swiss breeders. Plans are to sell 55 Holsteins, 25 Ayrshires and 20 Brown Swiss. Contact Don for more details or to consign. Plans are also in progress to have a sale in conjunction with our annual meeting on March 16, 2012, at the Richland County Fairgrounds. The Annual Meeting Committee reported that the meeting will be held in Bellville at the Quality Inn on March 16-17. Details will follow. The Show Committee reported that there were 216 head of Holsteins exhibited at the Ohio State Fair. Juniors are still doing fundraisers to finance their projects and trip to National Convention. The Membership Committee reported that membership was very strong this year (786 paid memberships) and the committee is getting started on next year’s membership drive. Tom Thorbahn and Julie Renner

are moving forward with plans to host another National Convention in Ohio. We are scheduled for 2025, but we may be able to move that date up several years. The next meeting of the Board will be December 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Select Sires in Plain City. Once again, I thank our committees for the work they do. A Beautiful Day, Outstanding Holsteins, A Great Sale Average! by Barb Lumley The Ohio Summer Sale held Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, Ohio, achieved a very successful average of $3,023 on 49 live consignments. The bidding was brisk on Whiteleather Observe 1891-ET born June 1, 2011, a substitution for number five in the catalog. Sired by DE-Su-Observer-ET, she is from the well-known Whiteleather Outside 367 classified Excellent 91-2E and with records to 39,400 pounds of milk, 1,411 pounds of fat and 1,076 pounds of protein. She was consigned by Whiteleather Holsteins, Minerva, Ohio, and when the gavel fell, she was struck off at $12,700 to Gene Iager, Fulton, Maryland. Selling for $6,000 was the consignment from Ted Renner, Dalton, Ohio: Be-Ware Plant Danyele 848-ET, a bred heifer due in September with sexed semen to Ronellee SS Durable-RC. She is sired by Ensenada Taboo Planet from seven generations of Very Good and Excellent Dams with outstanding milk production. She was purchased by Harpster Enterprises LTD, Jeromesville, Ohio. Pine-Tree Warren Lea, a fancy young cow classified Excellent 90 with an Excellent Mammary at three years,

milking 101 pounds per day and bred to Gillette Windbrook-ET, sold for $5,500 to Bill Indoe, Richman Farms, Lodi, Ohio. Consigned by Matt Steiner, Rittman, Ohio, she was sired by Pine-Tree Missy Warren-ET and from a Very Good 85 Durham dam. Spring Walk Farms, Big Prairie, Ohio, paid $5,000 to take home PineTree Billion Matty, classified Very Good 87 and averaging over 100 pounds of milk per day. Sired by J-K-R BW Marshall Billion from the wellknown Wesswood-HC Rudy Missy family and six generations of Very good and Excellent dams, she was consigned by Craig Neuenschwander, Dalton, Ohio. Whiteleather Shottle 1468, a bred heifer due in October to Gillette Jordan, sold for $4,900 to Acker Dairy Farms, LTD, Sterling, Ohio. Sired by Picston Shottle, she was from the same cow family as the top-selling consignment and was consigned by Whiteleather Holsteins. For $4,500, they also purchased Brookview Mood Swing, born December 7, 2010, and consigned by Eric Havens, Fremont, Ohio. Sired by Ri-Val-Re 2338 NiagraET, she was from a Very Good 86 dam also from the Wesswood-HC Rudy Missy family.

Renwind Advent Brass-Red sold for $4,600 to Nathan Gasser, Creston, Ohio. A bred heifer, she was consigned by Ted Renner, Dalton, Ohio. Sired by KHW Kite Advent-RedET, she was from eight generations of Excellent and Very Good dams and due in October to De-Martini-Red-ET. Selling for $4,000 each were J-JBeaver Alexander Star, a recently fresh two-year-old Alexander daughter consigned by John Mark Weaver and Jacob Beachy, Jr., Fredericksburg, Ohio, and purchased by Alan Brown, New Bremen, Ohio, and Neuway Bolton Misty, a Very Good 87 Bolton daughter averaging 100 pounds of milk per day, rebred to Pine-Tree Sid, consigned by Brad Carter and Trent Neuenschwander, Dalton, Ohio, and purchased by Spring Walk Farms, Big Prairie, Ohio. The sale was managed by the Ohio Holstein Association, Don Alexander, general manager. Sale chairmen were Ken Janes and Barb Lumley. Auctioneer was Steve Andrews, Wooster, Ohio. Wedding Congratulations to Brian Call and Jaylyn Waddle, who were married June 11 at the Springfield Methodist Church. Parents of the couple are Alfred and Greta Call of South Charleston and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Waddle. Jaylyn teaches first grade at Greenon School, and Brian teaches science at Southeastern High School and continues to be affiliated with Call-Del Holsteins in District 13. The couple resides at Brian’s home near the farm. • At the other end of the spectrum, family and friends gathered at the Ragersville United Church of Christ on August 7 to congratulate John and Ruth Young of Sugarcreek, District 3, on their 65th Wedding Anniversary. • The June 24, 2011, Dover-New Philadelphia Times Reporter carried a front page story saluting Louise Harding as the longest serving 4-H advisor in Tuscarawas County. Most of her involvement has been with the Crooked Run 4-H Clover Stitchers 4-H Club, which now includes boys and is known as Crooked Run Clover Stitchers and Evergrowers. Louise is a veteran judge of 4-H projects and continues to help with dairy projects and showing Hardingdale Holsteins. • Brownhaven Farm, D-12, New Bremen, received the 2011 Dairy Division Ohio Environmental Steward-ship Award during the Ohio State Fair. Father Alvin and sons Alan and Lou Brown were credited for responsible planning and management of resources. Their farm in located within three miles of Lake St. Marys. • Jim and Lora Sheffield and family, District 8, Wellington, were featured in the June 30 Farm and Dairy with an

inspiring story of their Jaloda Registered Holstein Farm. They were recognized for their community service, especially for Jim serving for more than 15 years as Lorain County Dairy Judging coach and organizing the District 8 Show and dairy products auction at the Lorain County Fair. • Staff Sgt. Joshua Whinnery received a surprise salute at the Columbiana County Fair when the local VFW and Amvet posts presented him with one of the patriotic quilts displayed at the fair as a thank you for his service. Josh has completed two tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan and was awarded a bronze star. He is currently stationed at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas, with his wife Jennifer and daughters Addyson and Alexius. In addition to the photo in the August 11, 2011, Farm and Dairy, Josh was pictured on the cover of the January-February 2007 Ohio News at Quality Quest Holsteins with his mother Marty Dye. • Proud grandmother Mary Lou Topp, D14, reports the arrival of Makenzie Elise Topp, born August 9, 2011, to Eric and Mary Topp. Makenzie was welcomed by her big sister Madelyn, who is already in the show ring at eight years old. • Good news that Jean Spike, D-11, is recovering satisfactorily from knee surgery. • James and Kelly Cole of Bloomville welcomed their first child, son Brady William, 8 lbs., 20 inches, on September 8. James is employed by CRI, and grandparents are Bill and Jane Cole of Bucks Pride, LLC. • Martha and Marvin Cook, Marlesco Farms, East Sparta, have copies of the Ohio Holstein News and Holstein World dating back to the 1950 that they would offer to anyone interested in them. Martha has taught for 62 years and is

Her dairy ability also showed through this year as she placed second in the Dairy Skillathon at the Ohio State Fair and was awarded Outstanding Dairy Project at the Trumbull County Fair. Marlee is the daughter of Estell and Lamar Liming and the granddaughter of Mary and A. L. Liming, District 1. • Megan Buechner, of Orient, Ohio, has been selected as the 2011-2012 schoolyear corporate communications intern for Select Sires, Inc. A senior at The Ohio State University, she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agriculture communications with a minor in agribusiness. She is a member of the Buckeye Dairy Club and was the 2009 Ohio Holstein Queen. • Ask the Indoes about the Celebrating Season’s Harvest Grow & Know fivecourse sit-down white-tablecloth dinner held in a wooded area of Richman Farms on August 11. New Board Member from D-5 Hello from District 5. I am Greg Conrad, and I am the new board member from District 5. I served two terms on the Ohio Holstein Board back in the 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and am excited to be back on the board again. Conrad Farm was started by my grandparents, Tom and Anna Mae, over a half century ago, and this is where I have lived my whole life. My grandmother still lives on the farm, and my parents, Don and Joyce, are still very active with the farming operations. We are located in the

southwest corner of Pickaway County, 45 minutes south of Columbus near a town called New Holland. We farm 400 acres and have around 250 head of cattle on the farm. We usually milk just under 100 Holsteins and Ayrshires. Nearly all of our animals are registered and 25% are Ayrshires. We currently have two part-time employees. My wife Judy and I both graduated from The Ohio State University in 1989, where I received a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in dairy science. Judy and I have

been married nearly 20 years. We have four children: Mikayla, 17; Macy 15; Macrae, 13; and Maylon, 10. Judy thoroughly enjoys caring for our children, from preparing meals to driving them to and from activities to tucking them in bed every night. She also stays busy with landscaping, gardening and assisting on the farm when needed. She is racking up the miles on the road this year driving Mikayla to various county fair and district shows. We are very proud that Mikayla entered the Holstein queen contest, without the push from her parents, and is serving as the 2011 Ohio Holstein Queen. Our children are involved in many activities through school, 4-H, FFA and church and help on the farm when they can. They all love to show their dairy cattle at the county and district levels and especially at the state fair. We harvest all of our corn silage, ear corn, square bales and round bales. We like to get our animals out on dirt as much as possible. All of our Holsteins carry the Conrad prefix. When selecting bulls, we look closely at feet and legs and udders to make sure we are breeding for longevity. We believe a measure for a good cow is not just one big milk record, but many. We currently have two cows over 13 years of age, one at 290,000 lbs. of milk lifetime and the other at 270,000 lbs. of milk lifetime. They are both sired by Conrad Mandel Jack, a Mandel son out of a homebred Excellent Blackstar. I try to get off the farm when I can and make it to the activities of my children. My family and I attend Grace United Methodist Church and are active there. I am also a board member for the American Dairy Association Mideast. I believe that it is important to tear down barriers and build unity if we wish to succeed in the future as purebred breeders and dairymen.

I appreciate breeder advertisers such as BenAlli, Line-View Dairy and Seven Gables, who featured photos of Junior members in their ads. I also appreciate breeders, such as Richman Farms and Kiko Farms, using show photos in their ads, and others like Jaloda, Lorawae, Miley, Paradise-Valley, Quality-Quest, Quietcove and Springhill for advertising their show winnings. Surely there were more winners than that. The Pine Tree Dairy and Hartline ads advertised specific sales. Other breeder ads referred to purchases or sales, new records or that hot new cow or cow family. New advertisers this issue are Line View Dairy and Neueway Farms. We aim to have each breeder ad include a call to action. This may be something as simple as “Look for our Consignment,” “Visitors Welcome,” “Stop and See Us,” Call for More Information” or “Look for Us at the Show or Sale.” Breeders always have something to advertise. The 54th National Holstein Futurity was held July 30 in the Coliseum at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus. The event began with Steve Maurer singing the National Anthem along with Lisa Gallager, organist, and the AllOhio Choir. Gregg Topp was the announcer for the show and the parade into the ring. Morris Van Gorden’s four-horse hitch is always a crowd pleaser, and Ohio Holstein Queen Mikayla Conrad joined Morris on the driver’s seat. Riding in the wagon were Lynn Harbaugh, Judge; Mary Lou Topp, National Holstein Futurity Executive Secretary; and Stacey French and Sharon Martin, secretaries for general manager of the Ohio State Fair Virgil Strickler. Riding with Bob Sommers in his 1935 Flatbed Chevy truck were Angi Kaverman, Dairy Superintendent, and Don Alexander, general manager of the Ohio Holstein Association. Fourteen beautifully groomed three-year-old Holsteins circled the ring waiting for the judge’s decision. When the lineup was complete, Miley Advent B Gem-Red, led by Jason Miley of Miley Holsteins Ltd., West Salem, stood in first place as the National Holstein Futurity winner and Best Udder in the class. Second place went to Express SMD Velvet Tara-ET, led by Jeremy Adams of Stan-Mar-Dale/Express, Urbana, and third place and second Best Udder went to Koneta Dundee Jade, Koneta Holsteins, Jackson Center. Pineybrook Spice-Red from Lah-Dale Holsteins, Marysville, was the fourth-place three-year-old. Standing in fifth place was Brookview-E Lifestyle-ET from Brookview Farms, Fremont. Wabash-Way Bolt Marion from Topp-View Farms, Botkins, was sixth, and Wolf-Ridge Bolton Delilah from Call-Del Farm, South Charleston, was seventh. Sanorvalley Terrason Gem, from Bryce Sanor, Homeworth, was eighth, and Richlin-J Advent Maggie-ET from David Finefrock of New Carlisle was ninth. Rounding out the top ten was Indian-Stone SS Lindsey-ET from Indian Stone Holsteins, Versailles. Futurity winner Miley Advent B Gem wore the white satin blanket and red rose collar as she paraded to the song “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.

Looking ahead, there are two opportunities for entering the 57th Futurity, which will show in 2014. Breeders have the choice to make all four payments up front in one payment of $30 or to use the rate of $3.00 for each animal entered by October 20, 2011, followed by payment in the second and third years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, especially the buyers and consignors, that helped make the Ohio Summer Sale a success. Our goal was to average over $3,000 — mission accomplished. Plans and selections are under way for the Ohio Multi-Breed Fall Sale. This year, Ohio Ayrshire Association and the Ohio Brown Swiss Association will also participate in the event, which will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on November 19, 2011. The sale will start with the Ayrshires at 10:00, Brown Swiss at 11:00, followed by the Holsteins at 12:00. There will be approximately 75- 80 selling. BarbWire Let’s “Get Real” About Childhood Obesity We are constantly bombarded with newspaper articles and television Barb Lumley reports on the growing problem of obesity in children. Often these reports blame the problem on dairy products, and some schools — not only in other states but also in Ohio — are now refusing to allow children to drink chocolate milk with their lunches. I have to ask, “What is really causing the obesity problem today?” I certainly don’t believe the blame should be placed on dairy products! Years ago, when meals were put on the table, they consisted of meat, potatoes, garden vegetables and whole milk, often from Jerseys with high butterfat content. Real butter and homemade jam went on the bread, whole milk and butter in the mashed potatoes; the meat usually had some fat on it, and if there was pie for dessert, the crust was made with lard. If foods were fried, it was usually in lard or bacon grease. And, yes, when I went to school, there were a few chubby kids, and I was one of them, but we hardly knew of any children with diabetes. What was different then? We ate what our moms cooked and put before us. Our moms were busy ladies, and they didn’t cater to our likes and dislikes. It was “eat and be quiet.” We didn’t go to the cupboard and grab a bag of Snickers, Oreos or potato chips in between meals. If we were lucky, Mom might have time to bake some cookies, pie or a cake maybe once a week. And we always asked before we took any! Candy was usually a special treat. Hopefully, we would receive a few pennies to spend on candy when we went to the grocery store. They didn’t have bags and bags of every kind you can imagine sitting on the shelves, as they do in the stores today. Candy was for Christmas time, when you were excited to get a chunk of Hershey’s chocolate chopped off a huge block laying on the grocery store counter, or you made taffy or fudge at home. You didn’t eat candy every day. And soda pop? Sometimes when dad went to the local filling station to buy gas or get a tire fixed, you were allowed a bottle of Orange Crush or Coca-Cola from the cooler. The refrigerator at home didn’t hold 24 cans of Mountain Dew, containing 46 grams of sugar in each can. And if you were lucky enough to have a few bottles of your favorite soda in the refrigerator, you didn’t drink four or five of them a day. Instead you drank lemonade, iced tea or Kool-Aid. And when you were working in 90-degree summer heat, it was lots of water. We didn’t sit around all day watching television or playing video games. You went outside and played fetch with the dog or skipped rope or took a long walk along the

creek. You rode your bicycle or got together with the neighbor kids to play ball. If you were older, you mowed the lawn, but not with a riding lawn mower. You pushed one! Or you helped hoe the garden, so mom had plenty of those fresh vegetables to cook for you. For those of us on the farm, there was a multitude of chores. Loading hay, unloading hay, feeding calves, carrying water, pitching manure, bedding stalls, sweeping floors — there was plenty to keep us busy. We ate good, healthful, homegrown food, and we used every dairy product. We didn’t consume products loaded with sugar, corn syrup, sodium, hydrogenated oils, xantham and guar gum, sorbitan monostearate, sodium polyphosphates, chicory root fiber, carob powder and many other ingredients that we can’t pronounce or identify, and don’t know where they came from! We know that milk comes from a cow, and dairy products are made from milk. One percent chocolate milk has 140 calories per cup and 23 grams of sugar, less than most kinds of soda. It contains Vitamins D and A and calcium. White milk comes as 1%, 2% or whole milk, and if you had no other food available, you could survive on it. Baby calves do for several weeks! Try that with Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, sport drinks, etc. There is a new program at the University of Illinois that combines a Ph.D. with a Master in Public Health degree, focused on child obesity prevention. This program is being funded with a $4.5 million grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The research program is called the Illinois Transdisciplinary Obesity Program, or I-TOPP. I have to ask, “Do they really need $4.5 million of taxpayers’ money to figure it out?” It’s time to “GET REAL” about what really causes childhood obesity and diabetes. It isn’t chocolate milk!

The Queen’sby Mikayla Corner Conrad Hey, Holstein friends! For those of you whom I have not yet met, my name is Mikayla Conrad, and I am the 2011 Ohio Holstein Queen. I am truly enjoying the opportunity to represent Holsteins and the dairy industry. The past several months, I have been traveling around the state going to the district Holstein shows and county fair open dairy shows. I have loved every minute of almost every trip. I say “almost,” because Mom and I had some problems with the GPS once or twice. Every show has had different ways of running the shows, and each show has run pretty smoothly. I have also had a chance to expand on my own judging skills. I have done some dairy judging through my FFA chapter, so I know the basics. By watching all the shows, I have been able to listen to the judges’ reasons for placing the classes. I can tell I am getting better when I place the class the same (or close to the same) as the judge. My favorite part of this whole experience as queen so far has been meeting so many new people. I have met many people involved with the shows and Ohio Holstein Association, as well as several girls who are county, district or state queens or princesses. I know the show season is starting to die down, but if there are county fairs or any other miscellaneous events you would like me to attend, I would love to come! Ohio’s Statewide 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Article and photos provided by Bonnie Ayars Garth Brooks said it so well in his song titled “Rodeo,” but obviously he has never seen a Quiz Bowl competition. Ohio’s 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl was just completed, and it was obvious to observers that some of those lyrics could be rewritten for our group! Their eyes were focused, clear and eager. Their fingers and hands were clutching a buzzer. Questions and answers received full attention And WE call the game “Dairy Quiz Bowl” competition! The drama of those lyrics is just how the “game” played out July 5 at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center on the campus of Ohio State. Questions such as “what is another term for calving” and “who is the managing editor of Hoard’s Dairyman” were just two of the many answered correctly on Tuesday, July 5. Teams from all over the state came to do their best in this annual competition. Some traveled from counties nearby, and others spent the night in Columbus to avoid the morning commute. Over a light breakfast, coaches, volunteers and participants shared some social time before the Junior and Senior written quizzes were given. A walking tour of campus helped to pass the time while the brackets were formulated. The Junior competition included teams and double elimination rounds, and the Senior division was formatted similarly to the popular Jeopardy game show. With hands poised on the buzzers, answers were provided confidently, some with hesitation, and others with wit. For example, one young man seemed to draw humor as his face reflected exactly whether he knew the answer OR did not know it. The tension in the room melted away into laughter as his

face displayed good luck AND anguish! Meanwhile in another area of the 4-H Center, older 4-H youth were selecting their favorite dairy categories for Jeopardy. Brave dairy youth asked for 50-point answers. Wagers and bets created interest as they relied on some luck, as well as intellect. (Korey is on a bit of a break this issue since he can’t type due to his broken wrist from football, so Mom is filling in this issue for him.) The Ohio Juniors have had a busy summer. Along with all the various shows, a group of Ohio Juniors traveled to the National Convention in Richmond for competitions. A group of 28 got together for the Ohio Junior Fun Day at Magic Mountain in Columbus and had a good time. The Ohio Juniors had an ice cream social after the Junior show at the Ohio State Fair for Junior exhibitors and Judging competitors. Then the Juniors led for the Ohio Summer Sale as well as

provided a lunch stand in August. It’s been a busy, busy season! Now we move into fall with plans for a fall/winter activity — so watch your mail, the Ohio Holstein Association website or the Ohio Junior Holstein Association Facebook page for updates. We also kick off our annual Holiday Cheese Sales — an order form is included on this page. Cheese will be available for pickup at the Fall Sale in November. We are also selling raffle tickets for the Sullivan Chute and Mat, donated by Beck’s Hybrids and Matt Lawson. Tickets are $5.00 for one or $20.00 for five tickets and are available from Ohio Juniors or advisors. Please consider supporting these Junior fundraisers. Funds raised by the Juniors help pay for and keep costs down for activities such as Fun Days, annual meeting activities, National Conventions, memberships and more. We appreciate the support of organizations and people like the Lawsons; Beck’s Hybrids; Pearl Valley Cheese; ADA Mideast, which donated the

ice cream for the State Fair and milk for the spring lunch stand; and Smith Dairy, which donated milk for the summer lunch stand. On July 16, Richard Harstine, Dundee, District 3, and his cousin Matt Harstine were operating a tractor and brush hog on a steep hill when the machine overturned, seriously injuring both. Matt suffered burn injuries and is receiving ongoing medical attention. Richard was treated for bruises, lung and shoulder injuries and a fractured ankle. On August 2 about 15 “angels” — neighbors — descended on Harstine Dairy to help make haylage. The Harstines continue to thank all those who worked, volunteered, provided equip-ment or food, etc. or otherwise helped the family. Richard and Cathy and sons Bo, Ty and Colton have a milking herd of 65 Holsteins. • Sorry to hear that Ramsier Dairy, District 7, had a fire on July 29 with the loss of barns, bulk tank and a robotic milker. No cows were lost, and they are back to milking. • Lausin Farms, District 1, had a close call when chopped straw stored in the hayloft began to heat. Firefighters were able to load the straw into manure spreaders and distribute it on nearby fields. Promotion GrillMaster Experience Across America Mobile sampling and demonstration tours are fast becoming one of the most effective platforms in engaging with American consumers in today’s society. Savvy consumers want to see, taste and experience products for themselves before they make any further decisons. To leverage this interest, the Beef Checkoff joined the likes of Sam’s Club, the Kansas City Barbeque Society, Trybe Targeting and Bull Outdoor Products to develop the American GrillMaster Experience. The American GrillMaster Experience began in June and runs through October 8 at Sam’s Club locations across the country in an effort to get the most out of the grilling season. Each event incorporated beef grilling demostrations using both charcoal and gas, as well as, product samples for consumers to enjoy. Additionally, the Checkoff funded “Beef Team” will be in attendance at each event to provide recipes, cooking tips and other materials designed to educate the masses. While the tour was not able to make a stop in Ohio, Checkoff staffers are working together to make these stops possible in next year’s campaign.

Retailers Getting the “Beef Fast Facts” The American GrillMaster Experience wasn’t the only promotion executed at the national level throughout the summer to keep beef top of mind as folks hit their patios. The checkoff worked closely with

retailers across America to provide the new edition of the “Beef Fast Facts” that reached more than 850 meat-case managers arming them with the latest data and sales tips to help promote beef for grilling and position these retailers as expert beef resources for their shoppers. In the Northeast, not only were the Beef Fast Facts distributed but also a plethora of recipe booklets, retail posters, shelf wobblers and an informationsal “Stay Home, Grill Out” Website directing consumers to beef information, recipes and sweepstakes entry. More than 315 retail locations throughout the Northeast participated in the promotion with the Website alone garnering 18,446 vistors.

Consumer Information You Heard It From a Farmer Over the summer the Ohio Beef Council joined forces with the Ohio Livestock Coalition and other commodity groups to execute the “You Heard It From a Farmer” radio campaign. This campaign was executed in an effort to educate consumers about what Ohio livestock farmers do on a day-today basis to bring the food they love to tables across Ohio and across the country. This campaign gave listeners a ﬁrsthand account of how Ohio farmers ensure exellent animal care, protect the environment and provide safe, wholesome food for today’s consumers. “You Heard It From a Farmer” kicked off on August 15 and ran through August 28 hitting the radiowaves in the Columbus, ClevelandAkron, Cincinnati, Lima, Zaneville,

Dayton, Youngtown, Toledo and Wheeling markets. Representing the beef indusrty was the voice of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association President Dave Felumlee. Dave spoke on food safety and the many steps he takes on his farm to set the highest of standards to consistently provide a safe, healthy product.

Industry Information Raising Our Voices “U.S. farmers and ranchers have raised a lot of things. Except our voices.” This is the message being extended throughout ads across the United States. The U.S. Farmer and Rancher Alliance in part with the Beef Checkoff are presently executing this the ﬁrst phase in a movement to lead the conversation about the future of food production. — In Memoriam — HERBERT L. BEITZEL, 92, retired auctioneer, realtor and dairy farmer passed, away June 4, 2011, following a brief illness. Born in Auburn Township in Tuscarawas County, he was the son of the late Jacob L. and Anna Roth Beitzel. In 1940 he moved with his family to a dairy farm on Crooked Run Road. On February 15, 1948, he married Isabelle Reif, and in 1969 they took ownership of the farm, which they named Her-Belle Farms. Upon retiring from the dairy business, they built a new horse farm known as Her-Belle Haflingers. Herb was past president of the Tuscarawas County Realtors Association and the Tuscarawas County Dairy Service Unit. He was an auctioneer for 40 years and served as the auctioneer for the Ragersville Historical Society. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Dover, Dover Township Zoning Board, Brandywine Grange, Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau and Holstein Association. He was proud of his real estate, especially of the landscaping around his home. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to any neighbor or friend in need. He loved to entertain friends at wedding parties by calling square dances. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle; three daughters: Judy (Richard) Pollard of Loudonville, Kathy (Robert) Doughty of Coshocton and Bonnie (Jeff) Schrock of New Philadelphia; son Ron (Melanie) Beitzel of Gahanna; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce Beitzel, sister Martha Beitzel and grandson Caleb Doughty. TIMMONS BUXTON, 54, of Auburn Township, Geauga County, passed away June 14, 2011, at her home. She was a 1975 graduate of Kenston High School. She was a 4-H Extension Agent for Geauga County and Director for Junior and Senior Fair Boards for the Geauga County Fair. Diane served as a pastoral care volunteer at Geauga Hospital, as well as a volunteer at the Newbury United Community Church’s Hunger Cupboard, and she was a member of the church choir. She was a former EMT for the Auburn Fire Department. Diane is survived by her husband of 24 years, Roger; sons Brian Renner of Chino Valley, Arizona, Adam Buxton of Austin, Texas, and Todd Buxton of Columbus; grandchildren Montana Rose Renner and Lauren and Taylor Buxton; her parents, George and Clare Ann Timmons of Newberry; and a brother, Tim Timmons of Monroe, Indiana. She was preceded in death by another brother, Mitchell Timmons.

FLOYD W. JONES, 87, of Convoy, died June 24, 2011, at Van Wert Hospice Center. A 1942 graduate of Wren High School, he worked for Central Ohio Breeders Association and Select Sires for over 60 years. He was the owner and operator of Floyd Jones Clothing Store in Convoy for over 30 years. He was member of the Convoy United Methodist Church, Convoy Lions Club, Farm Bureau, Van Wert County Dairy Association and a charter member of the Convoy Community Foundation. He had served as a trustee for the Northwest Ohio Family Resource Center and also on the Van Wert Hospital Commission Board. He was a member of the Crestview Board of Education for 20 years with four terms as president and was a member of the Ohio School Board Association’s Board of Trustees and Executive Committee in 1987. He is survived by two sons, Larry (Linda) of Versailles, Kentucky, and Ron (Minda) of Hicksville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, C. Clyde and Anna (Kever) Jones; his wife of 56 years, Martha (Lare); four brothers; and one sister. BARBARA JEAN (HEIN) TIMMONS, 58, of Auburn Township, Geauga County, died June 28, 2011. She was a 1971 graduate of Kenston High School and was a bus driver for the Kenston Local School District for more than 25 years. She was one of the founding members of the Auburn Township EMTs. She was an adviser for a 4-H sewing club and was the Junior Leaders state square dance caller in 1969 and 1970. She played mandolin and violin with the Maple Town Tuners. On April 15, 1972, she married William C. Timmons, who survives at their home. Also surviving are sons Jeremy of Chesterland, Joshua of Auburn Township and Benjamin of Aurora; six grandchildren; her parents, William and Irene Hein of Bainbridge; a sister, Sharon O’Donnell of Auburn Township; brothers William Hein of Auburn Township and Randy Hein of Long Valley, New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews. — In Memoriam, continued — DALE A. DEAM, 76, of Springfield, died July 7, 2011. The son of Edward and Isabel (Allen) Deam, he was raised on their dairy farm in Clark County, where he developed a love of both agriculture and competitive sports. As a 4-Her, he proudly showed his beautiful Holstein cow Gracie as grand champion at the Champaign and Clark county fairs. At Northwestern High School, he was known as “Little Yogi” for his prodigious catching skills on the baseball team. At 16, he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds and was told to come back when he was 18. Dale decided against baseball, choosing instead to attend college, but remained a lifelong Reds fan. Dale and Carol Ruth (Pyles) Deam were married January 5, 1954, and soon after, Dale joined the U.S. Army, serving in Germany for two years. He toured the country as a member of the Army baseball team, sending photos and souvenirs home to Ruth and their baby son Tom. When he returned home, the family moved to Columbus, where Dale followed in his father’s footsteps by attending The Ohio State University. A true Buckeye, Dale enjoyed OSU football and basketball and instilled in his family a love for Ohio State. Two new additions to the family, daughters Beth and Michele, came along during that time. The Deam family would expand over the years to include two more boys Steve and Neil. Dale graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1960. The family returned to the family farm in Springfield, where Dale milked his Holstein herd to fund his and his father’s real passion, racing Standardbred horses. The family enjoyed watching their horses race and win at Scioto Downs and local fairs. Dale was a member of North Hampton Community Church, Ohio Holstein Association, Clark County Farm Bureau, United States Trotting Association and The Ohio State University Alumni Association. Dale is survived by his wife Carol; sons Thomas A. Deam of West Liberty, Steven S. (Deidre) Deam of Hilliard and Neil M. (Jennifer) Deam of Sugarcreek; and daughters Michele E. (Steve) Specht of Dover and Beth A. (Bill) Davenport of Pittsburg. Dale was blessed with 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. They are Kelly (Luke) Moritz, Wynn and Will; Todd (Brandi) Deam, Brody and Bayleigh; Shannon (John) Crowder and Kipton; Laura Deam and fiancé Brad Cox; Tyler and Kaleb Deam; Allison, Annie and Adam Specht; Rachel (Mike) Fearon, Madelyn and Seth; Nathan (Jennifer) Davenport and Adrina; Nica (Josh) Hanes, Harley, Caden and Cole; Abbey (Chase) Moore and expected daughter Lillian Dale; Nicole, Trevor, Madison, Garett and Bryson Deam; and Victoria and Emily Deam. WILLIAM LEWIS “LEWIE” PORTER, 83, husband of Eleanor “Ellie” Porter, died July 9, 2011. He was born in Illinois and was a leader in the dairy industry his entire life as a professional dairy manager. He managed Rolling Acres Guernsey Farms in Illinois, Happy Valley Jerseys in Kentucky and such well-known Holstein farms as Winter Place, Hanover-Hill-Ru-Ann East, Carrousel Farms and Mohrfield Dairy. Lewie received numerous accolades during 70 years association with dairy farming, including the coveted Klussendorf Trophy in 1969, awarded by peers in recognition of outstanding individuals who exemplify the best qualities of sportsmanship, ability and endeavor. He was a world-recognized Dairy Showman and Judge, having shown and judged at dairy cattle shows across the nation, Canada and Japan. He relished any opportunity to engage young farmers with his passion for cows. He was active in FFA in high school and received the American Farmer degree. He participated in 4-H, receiving awards in high school, and was later awarded the 4-H Alumni Award for the State of Kentucky. Furthering education and support for youth, Lewie and Ellie started the first community 4-H Club in Boyle County. After retiring in 2001, he was actively engaged in volunteer, neighborhood and church activities, tending his flowers and yard and enjoying visits with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by sons Kevin (Sue) of Lexington, KY and Korey of Fort Myers, Florida; son-in–law Evans Wright; grandchildren Stacey (Ian) Wheeler, Andrew (Erin) Porter, Justin Porter, Olivia and Audrey Porter and Aubrey Wright; and great-grandsons Henry Lewis Wheeler and Ethan Andrew Porter. Also surviving are four sisters and a brother. He was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved daughter, Nickki Wright. JAMES ALLEN OGDEN, 69, died August 8, 2011, at his residence at Gambier. He was born July 10, 1942, in Wayne County to Walter L. and Ruth C. (Hartman) Ogden. TERRY LEE SWAISGOOD, 65, of rural Polk, died August 17, 2011, as a result of an accident. The son of Raymond E. and Pauline Wise Swaisgood, he was a 1963 graduate of Ashland High School and a dairy farmer for 40 years. Terry was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Ohio Holstein Association and National Holstein Association with the Peek-A-Boo prefix for his registered Holsteins. He was a member and past president of Ashland County Farm Bureau and a member of the Ashland FFA Alumni and Rowsburg Lions Club. Terry served on the FSA County Committee in many capacities for 25 years and the Agrimark Co-op Board for 13 years, was a 4-H adviser for Wiggletown Boys and worked four-and-a-half years at the Town and Country Co-op Sterling branch. In recent years, he was volunteer for the Ashland County Park District and the Ashland Fourth of July Balloonfest, working with the crew of an Illinois balloon, and enjoyed visiting his son and daughter and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Light Swaisgood, whom he married March 30, 1968; a son and daughterin-law, Tim and Sarah Swaisgood of Malta, New York; a daughter and son-in-law, Traci and Clint Lozier of Billings, Montana; five grandchildren: Jack, Max and Claire Swaisgood and Cole and Lillie Anna Lozier; two sisters, Barb Swaisgood of Polk and Becky Wisdom of Loveland, Colorado; a brother, Dan Swaisgood of Polk; and a step-sister, Sarah Studebaker of Bethel. He was preceded in death by his parents and two children, Tamara Lissa and Trevin Lee Swaisgood. JEANNE L. HENSON, 55, of Ashville, passed away August 20, 2011, at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Columbus. She was born September 22, 1955, in Coshocton to William R. and Lucille Murphy Aronhalt. Jeanne served 18 years as a postal clerk for the United States Postal Service. She is survived by her husband, Jules Henson; daughter Katie Henson, editor of the Guernsey Breeders Journal, current president of District 5 of Ohio Holstein Association and associated with Silver Mist Holsteins; son Ryan Henson of Ashville; grandson Keegan; and sisters Cheryl (Elmer) Barnett, Cathy (Robert) Besser and Karen (Steve) Slaughter, all of Coshocton. RITA K. KIBLER, 57, of rural Warren, died August 23, 2011, at her home. She was born June 23, 1954, in Conneaut, the daughter of Richard A. Johnson and the late Marjorie B. Georgia Johnson. She was a graduate of Norwayne High School and was the secretary for Kibler Dairy Farms. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Rita enjoyed gardening, was a past president of Lordstown Garden Guild and was a 4-H advisor for many years. She had a pink tractor that she entered in various parades and tractor-pulling contests. She liked going to fairs and showing dairy cattle. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Garry Kibler, whom she married August 3, 1974, Rita is survived by her father, Richard B. Johnson of Lordstown; sons Garry (Antoinette) Kibler, Jr. of Lordstown and Cory (Tanya) Kibler of Lordstown; grandchildren Cody, Carter Frances and Abbigail Kibler; and brother Scott (Sara R. JANET LUCILLE KIESS SPRENG, 89, passed away September 8, 2011. She was born in Bucyrus, September 25, 1921, the daughter of the late Harvey and Ida Sherrard Kiess. She was preceded in death in 2006 by her husband of 60 years, John O. Spreng, Sr. Janet was a 1939 graduate of Bucyrus High School and a 1943 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University. She was a teacher, beginning in Sandusky and continuing in Anniston, Alabama, and Bucyrus before finishing her career at Colonel Crawford. She taught elementary students before initiating the remedial reading program at Colonel Crawford, in which she taught the final 20 years of her career. Always a teacher, she took great delight in telling stories of her numerous students

who at one time had struggled with their reading, only to go on to great success in their careers, several becoming medical doctors or earning their doctorate degrees. Always active in the support of her community, Janet was a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church, Bucyrus Community Hospital Twig #1, North Robinson Homemakers, Southside Reading Circle, Clionian Club, New Era Club, American Association of University Women, Crawford County Genealogical Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega, Friends of the Library, Salvation Army Board and Crawford County Retired Teachers. She is survived by two sons, John (Suzanne) Spreng and James (Valerie) Spreng, and granddaughter Anne (Joel) Cole, all of Bucyrus, and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and greatgrandnieces and great-grandnephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings Helen (James) Kurtz, Dr. John (Lucy) Kiess and Florence (William) Vorlicky. All calves born Sept. 1, 2010 to Aug. 31, 2011 inclusive are eligible for THE NATIONAL HOLSTEIN FUTURITY No. 57. Purses in this event shall consist of all moneys received by this Association in connection therewith by way of nomination fees, subsequent payments, plus all other moneys received from any person or persons or Fair Associations, sponsors of this show and etc., except the first payment, which may be used for promotion of The National Holstein Futurity, if the Board of Directors so chooses; also less actual expenses incurred by this Association in connection with the promotion and management of said show. Winner — 1st-20%, 2nd-10%, 3rd-7%, 4th-6%, 5th-41⁄ 2%, 6th-10th-3%, 11th-15th-2 1⁄ 2%, 16th-20th-2%, 21st-30th-1 1⁄ 2%. Should less than 30 animals show, the awards shall not be increased on that account, and the unclaimed awards shall revert to The National Holstein Futurity, Inc., for use in the following year’s Futurity. OPTION: Make all four payments in one of $30.00 each animal, or the usual $3.00 schedule.
