From the President by Dallas Rynd As you know, the past few months have been a bit chaotic for our Association. It would take several pages and lots of description to review the past three months, so I am not going to do that. I will, however, try to give it my best shot to inform you of current facts. In regard to the lawsuit, we informed our membership as soon as possible once we were aware of the situation. As of Friday, August 23, our payment of $45,000 had been sent by our attorneys to the attorney for NIL Livestock. This completed our obligation to the agreed settlement amount of $105,000 for Ohio Holstein. Our Association has borrowed the $45,000 from Commercial Savings Bank in Wooster on a 15-year loan. It is the Board’s goal to pay this loan off as quickly as possible. It was necessary to cash in our reserve funds of $68,000 to continue to operate, to pay our consignors and to assist in the settlement of this lawsuit. We have filed an insurance claim with our two insurance companies. Our attorneys are working with us and the insurance companies in an effort to collect on one or both policies if we possibly can. We have set up a trust account specifically for our consignment sales. We have also created a contract for consignors to sign when an animal goes into one of our sales. The two items together will put us in compliance with the Livestock and Packers Act and should benefit our entire membership. It is a beautiful summer day here as I write this column. Yesterday was our Summer Sale, and there was a great group of really good-uddered young cows and fancy heifers that rang up a very respectable sale average of $2,410 on 60 lots. My thanks go out to many people who helped make this sale successful for our Association and helped to head us in the right direction. First and foremost, a huge thank you goes out to Phil Fisher and his family for donating such a fine calf with a fantastic pedigree that went

back to a great Ohio cow, Wapa Bootmaker Mandy. To Tom Thorbahn for organizing a buying syndicate that purchased this calf for more than $5,000. To the many individuals who contributed to the syndicate. To the AI companies for their semen donations. To the selectors, night crew, auctioneer and pedigree reader who donated their time for free. To those who donated straw and feed. And, thanks to everyone else who helped, contributed, attended the sale, consigned or bought animals. We couldn’t get back on track without all of you. In all, we were able to raise more than $9,600 for our Association. It is the feeling of the Board that the best possible thing to do is to get back to our normal day-to-day business. To that end, we are planning to have our normal booth exhibit at World Dairy Expo that we will share with New York Holstein Association, just as we have in the past. If you make it to Expo, stop by the booth and say hello. We are also planning a Fall Sale and other normal activities. If you have a potential consignment, please contact one of the Sale Committee members or a Board member.

The Board remains upbeat and positive. The membership is expressly responsible for this positive outlook. I can’t possibly thank the officers and Board members enough for the time, effort and dedication that they have put forth during this difficult time. I can’t imagine going through this situation without each of you. There are also a number of members who are not currently on the Board who have spent numerous hours in meetings and on the phone to help solve the problems we have faced. The list is too long to mention, but, once again, I can’t thank you enough. You have made sacrifices of your own to help our Association. We are resilient, and we all love the registered Holstein cow. She has paid for our farms and our equipment. She has educated our children. She has given us many gifts, and it is for her that our Association will grow stronger. As always, if you have suggestions, questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or your Board representative. Thanks, Dallas

Stan-Mar-Dale Chance Vivi, owned by Stan-Mar-Dale/ Express, placed eighth. Futurama Dusk Linda, owned by Futurama Holsteins, garnered ninth place. Brookview Ridiculous-ET, owned by Matt and Megan Lawson, rounded out the top ten placings. Futurity winner T-Triple-T Durham Poppi wore the Red Rose collar and paraded the ring to the music of “Hall of Fame” by The Script. The Futurity wishes to thank the following who contributed to the success of the show: Lindsay Bowen and Lucy Baumbauer for making the rose collar; Jenny Thomas for photography; Paul Haskins and Katie Henson for lining up cattle; and Keaton and Brennan Topp, sanitary engineers. The Futurity especially thanks all the breeders for participating in the Futurity for the past 56 years, and especially encourages everyone to enter in order to keep this exciting event at the Ohio State Fair. Looking ahead, there are two opportunities for entering the 59th Futurity that will show in 2016. Breeders have the choice to make all four payments up front in the one payment of $30.00 or to use the rate of $3.00 for each animal entered by October 20, 2013, followed by payment in the second and third years. Futurity entry blanks can be found on page 39 in this issue or obtained from Executive Secretary Mary Lou Topp, 10344 Botkins Road, Botkins, Ohio 45306. Photos provied by Jenny Thomas
Information provided by Mary Lou Topp, Executive Secretary of National Holstein Futurity — The 56th National Holstein Futurity Show was held July 27, 2013, in the Coliseum at the Ohio State Fair. Barclay Phoenix judged the Futurity, and Leslie Maurice did the announcing. To open the event, Steve Maurer sang the National Anthem accompanied by Lisa Gallager, the organist for the Ohio Youth Choir. The parade into the ring included Morris Van Gorden’s four-horse hitch bringing in Ohio Holstein Queen Cayla Inkrott. Joe Cole drove Bob Sommers’ 1935 flatbed Chevy truck. Among the celebrities entering were Angie Kaverman, Dairy Show Chairperson; John Spreng, assistant to Virgil Strickler; and Steve Moff. Also entering the ring were General Manager Virgil Strickler and assistants Sharon Martin and Stacey French, and State Fair Commissioners Tom Prince, Steve Reinhart, Sherry Van Tassel, Tamara Brown, Andy Dirl and David Madison. Jody Hoynoski of Holstein USA, and Parker Hardy of Holstein World were introduced. Futurity Board members in attendance were Eric Havens, Nevin L’Amoreaux, Keith Topp, Jason Miley, Tony Henry, Adam Whiteleather, Emily Siegrist, James Cole and Paul Haskins. Fifteen beautifully groomed three-year-old cows circled the ring waiting for the judge’s decision. When the lineup was completed, T-Triple-T Durham Poppi, exhibited by Triple-T and Entourage, stood in first place. Poppi was also named Best Uddered of the Futurity. Second place and second place Best Uddered went to White-Light Golden Kolor-ET from White-Light, Quietcove, Curran and Koster. Third place, Miley Advent B GeminiRed, shown by Adam Miley, also received the first place Junior award sponsored by COBA/Select Sires/Genex . Esther’s Extras Over the history of the Ohio Holstein Association, the association has faced challenges, and each time the board, committees and membership have worked together to strengthen the association. The Summer Sale report on page 14 and the thank you’s to the sponsors and the volunteers on page 15 show the most recent successful cooperative efforts. There are also other ways to show support for the association. 1. Responding promptly to the 2014 membership drive is one action that can be taken to help. Notices will be
mailed to current members in October. Adult and Junior membership forms are printed in this issue. 2. Participating in state sales as consigners or purchasers is another way to support OHA. 3. Advertising in the Ohio Holstein News benefits the association along with promoting your own herd or business. An active membership makes a viable and strong Ohio Holstein Association.

He has sold and purchased animals through the Ohio Holstein Sales, Buckeye Classic Sales, National Holstein sales and privately. He is using embryo transplant on his top animals with the goal to increase his herd and further improve marketability. Another goal is to prove that it is profitable to merchandise Registered Holsteins. He received the District 8 Junior Breeder Award in 2008. Ryan is cooperating with local 4-Hers by providing heifers for them to show and mentoring them at the fair.
Oxygen Barrier System This easy to use patented “impermeable” plastic reduces loss of silage in bunker silos to less than 5% and virtually eliminates surface mold. In combination with protective tarps, the film is protected from bird, rodent, and UV damage. To complete the system, Silostop sandbags are used on the overlaps. It is not necessary to provide weight over the entire surface so tires are effectively eliminated.

Committed to Child Nutrition Fuel Up to Play 60, the nation’s largest children’s health and wellness platform in schools, was founded by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League® and is supported by the USDA. The program promotes innovative ways to give students access to healthy foods (including dairy) through breakfast in the classroom, after-school snacking and other opportunities. Currently, FUTP 60 has been adopted in 73,000 schools, reaching more than 11 million students nationwide. In Ohio and West Virginia 3,800 schools participate in FUTP 60 reaching 1.8 million students! To jumpstart the 2013-2014 school year, ADA Mideast will host two FUTP 60 Program Advisor Training Camps for 100 Cincinnati and Cleveland area schools. The events, held at the stadiums for the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, are geared to motivate and teach FUTP 60 Program Advisors how to empower their students to make a difference with FUTP 60. Bengals Michael Johnson and Browns Joe Thomas will also be there to share why they believe the key to success is good nutrition, stressing the importance of eating breakfast, and getting plenty of physical activity. These training camps help empower students and advisors to make sustainable changes in their schools, such as adding breakfast vending machines, to help increase breakfast participation. For example, when the Cincinnati Public School district, which is home to 30,000 students, added breakfast vending machines to their cafeterias, breakfast participation increased from less than 2% to 20%. And that’s good news for dairy because the vending machines offer dairy foods like yogurt and string cheese!

Friend is a word that I don’t throw around Though it’s used and abused, I still like the sound. I save it for people who’ve done right by me And I know I can count on if ever need be. Some of my friends drive big limousines Own ranches and banks and visit with queens. And some of my friends are up to their neck In overdue notes and can’t write a check. They’re singers or ropers or writers of prose And others, God bless ’em, can’t blow their own nose! I guess bein’ friends don’t have nothin’ to do With talent or money or knowin’ who’s who. It’s a comf’terbul feelin’ when you don’t have to care ’Bout choosin’ your words or bein’ quite fair ’Cause friends’ll just listen and let go on by Those words you don’t mean and not bat an eye. It makes a friend happy to see your success, They’re proud of yer good side and forgive all the rest And that ain’t so easy, all of the time, Sometimes I get crazy and seem to go blind! Yer friend just might have to take you on home Or remind you sometime that you’re not alone, Or ever so gently pull you back to the ground When you think you can fly with no one around. A hug or a shake, whichever seems right Is the high point of givin’, I’ll tellya tonight, All worldly riches and tributes of men Can’t hold a candle to the worth of a friend.

The Queen’s Corner by Cayla Inkrott Hello again, fellow dairymen and women!! Summer has sure flown by, but I have thoroughly enjoyed my travels around the state to many district shows. I am now back in Columbus for school and readjusting to the city and college life. I am looking forward to a Bob Sommers and I at the Futurity fun-filled school year and hope to expand my knowledge of dairy judging. As I traveled around the state, it was great seeing everyone’s faces again. I have managed to attend all the shows I caught word of or tracked down dates and times. I feel like I know Ohio’s roads like the back of my hand now. The 2013 Ohio State Fair was a wonderful experience for me. Not only did I attend the shows, but I also helped the Buckeye Dairy Club out with the milking parlor. Everyone did a great job showing; congratulations to all who won! The Futurity was awesome and full of emotion. I have never attended a Futurity show, let alone being a part of it! I would like to thank Mary Lou Topp for making that night very special for me, and everyone else involved. Like always, feel free to contact me anytime, by email at inkrott.25@osu.edu or on my cell at 419-969-4915.

Introducing MATTHEW LAWSON — New Board Member for District 9
I was born and raised on a row crop farm near Sidney that also operated a farrow-to-finish hog operation. At one time, my great-grandfather and Grandpa had a dairy farm that consisted of about 45 head of Holsteins and a few Guernseys. The cattle were gone, and hogs were occupying the barns long before I was born. Because of my grandparents’ experience with the dairy, Grandpa always told me, “If you want a wife that works, marry a dairy girl.” Little did I know that I’d live by this advice. As most youngsters who are reared on a livestock farm, I participated in 4H at the county fair, where I exhibited sheep, steers, and primarily, hogs. I enjoyed the hogs so much that I became involved in the National Junior Swine Association. I attended a leadership conference in Dayton, where I interacted with the junior board of directors. This is when I decided that I would be a director. A year later, I ran for a position and was elected to a two-year term on the board. The second year of my term, I became president of the National Junior Swine Association. This was such an awesome opportunity that allowed me to travel to regional shows, board meetings, leadership conferences and committee meetings for the National Swine Association. Although I wasn’t allowed to show at these events, I felt privileged to facilitate these functions for younger members. When I graduated high school, I kept my word to my mom to attend college, and I chose to go to Wilmington College. Coincidentally, this is where my girlfriend — now my wife — Megan also attended. I had just met Megan at the county fair, and considering Grandpa’s wisdom about
“dairy girls,” things fell into place. Despite Megan’s dad Matt Andrews’s seemingly intimidating image, I felt sure Megan was the one for me. I majored in Animal Science, and as part of the curriculum, I had to attend the Farm Science Review. While at the Review, I went to Beck’s Hybrid’s tent to place our family seed order. An employee of Beck’s asked if I were currently employed, to which I responded, “I’m managing a hog barn outside Wilmington, Ohio.” He then asked, “Are you happy doing what you are doing?” I honestly didn’t have a response. However, Megan was behind me shaking her head “No.” I decided it was time to find a job that I was happy doing and not just work to draw a paycheck. I took an internship with Beck’s Superior Hybrids, which turned into full-time employment. Currently, I am a Beck’s District Team Dealer Manager for District 1 in Northwest Ohio. As the largest family-owned seed corn company in the U.S., it fits perfectly with my background. After graduating college, Megan and I married and moved to Bluffton, Ohio. Megan became the FFA and ag teacher at Cory-Rawson and is still employed there. In my job as seed corn District Team Dealer Manager, one of my dealers taught me an important life lesson: “Happy wife, Happy life.” During a transition to a new location, we found a house and property that included barn space for a few heifers. Megan was happy that we could continue to show animals at state, district and county fairs.
Currently, we own about ten heifers and five cows, which are kept under our new farm name, Son-Rock Farms. We house our cows at Chad Egolf’s operation in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and keep heifers at our farm. About two years ago, everything fell into place for Megan and me to become involved with the Ohio Junior Holstein Association. In my work with Beck’s, I’m encouraged to support youth in ag programs, and this was a perfect chance to organize a raffle to support the Holstein youth. The next year, the raffle blossomed, and we raised over $2,500 for the OJHA. Following this success, Cheri Oechsle offered Megan and me an opportunity to become youth advisors. I felt a need to give back to a youth program. From this, I took the next step to become a Board member for the OHA and bring the voice of youth to the table. I believe in stepping up and taking a hands-on approach in creating opportunities. I wrote this as I sat at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, Ohio, on August 14 — the day that our first child, son Isaiah Matthew Lawson, was born, weighing 8 pounds 1 ounce and 23 inches long. I thank those who have helped me along the way. Without family and friends, I would not be who I am, and I could not do without the support of my amazing wife Megan. I look forward to ventures with the Ohio Holstein Association and the Junior Organization. For more on the Lawsons, see their ad on page 9.

The Power of Thank You WOW! What an awesome year it has been! I was fortunate enough to make it to three district shows, two county fairs, Spring Show, Ohio State Fair, Indiana State show and my first National Holstein Competition. After experiencing all of this, the one thing that is most promising to me is how many youth take advantage of the opportunity to exhibit livestock and compete in likeminded competitions. As we close out this year’s show season, I want to ask all those that had the opportunity to compete in any competition, “Who gave ME the opportunity to be here?” I remember being at the shows, although I did not show cows growing up, and I absolutely lived to go to the county fair and go to the NJSA Summer Spectacular — which is the largest summer hog show sponsored by the swine association. They were the best times of my childhood! Although getting up at the crack of dawn, treading out in the hot sun or spending long hours in the barn shoveling manure may not have been the most desirable use of time, it was totally worth it when I got to that show and did well! Unfortunately, all too often, we assume or expect to show at the shows or attend a convention of sorts every year, and we forget that Mom, Dad or other family/friend took the

So again, I ask, “Who took the time — and money — to invest in me and allow me the opportunity to participate in the Dairy Industry?” As young individuals who have the privilege to do what we do in the show ring, speech The Ohio Junior Dairy Bowl Team at the contest or even National Holstein Convention in poster board, it is Indianapolis. Front, from left: J.D. important to reaNelson, Kenzie Bishop, Keaton Topp. lize that not every Back, from left: Luke Bishop, advisor youngster has this Joyce Nelson. opportunity. With my wife being an Ag and FFA teacher, she has the opportunity to meet some kids that do not have any idea about the dairy industry and do not have parents that own a barn to house those livestock so that they can become involved in showing heifers. Two years ago, Megan and I made the decision that, since both of us were afforded these privileges, we would get her FFA kids involved by allowing those kids the opportunity to lease our heifers for the summer; come to our house to groom, clean and lead those heifers; and then reap the rewards at the county fair. This year we had three girls participate. I was never so proud in my life when one went out and won the Senior Showmanship her very first year! She had no clue what a halter even was when she began this venture, but through hard work, perseverance and an OPPORTUNITY afforded by a couple of individuals, she succeeded. The most humbling thing about this year for me was stepping back and realizing that, all too often, I take too much for granted — truth be told, I bet we all do! But through this project with the girls, I learned that there are youngsters out there that would give up A LOT to have the same opportunity that the rest of us assume is second nature because our parents and/or loved ones have invested that same opportunity in us. So, as we close out this year’s show season, the most important thing that we can do as young people is say two little words that all too often get overlooked — “Thank You”! I look forward to seeing all those smiling young faces at future shows, and I just want to say, as an onlooker, THANK YOU to all the parents and loved ones that get youth involved in our wonderful industry! Keep watching your mailbox for upcoming events.

INDIANA JONES
H E L L O, From everyone, hope you have had a Mike great summer. National Director It was nice to see many of you at the covention in Indianapolis. What a fun week for me. I was sale chair, and what an experience! All the cattle where housed at our house prior to the sale and then again after. I was so thankful for everyone who helped set up and clean up the convention center. At one point, I looked up and counted over 50 people helping to take down and clean up. But my highlight was having the privilege to sing the National Anthem at the sale and the Lord’s Prayer at the closing banquet. Again, I want to thank all the people who helped with the convention. I want to congratulate Ohio on their Fall Sale. I wish you all the luck and commend you for your resolve. Ohio has a pretty special group of breeders. On the Association front, thus far in the year we are slightly below budget. Registrations are two percent behind last year. Classifications are one percent higher than last year. I hope to see many of you in Madison at the World Dairy Expo. Have a safe harvest.

Junior All-Ohio Rules ———————
The Junior All-Ohio winners are featured in the All-Ohio Calendar and owners receive a special award at the Annual Meeting. The awards are selected by a point system under the following rules: I. OWNERSHIP A. Animals must be owned and registered in the name(s) of one or more Ohio Junior Holstein Association members. For animals owned in partnership, all owners must be members of their Junior Holstein Association. All animals must stand on the Association records in the individual name of the exhibitor. Adult-Junior partnerships are not acceptable, unless all members are Junior members and listed on the registration paper. Multiple Junior exhibitors may own an animal in partnership if the animal is exhibited by the partnership throughout the entire show season. B. Registrations or transfers to the Ohio Junior Member(s) must be made by June 1, 2013 for cows two years or older and for calves and yearlings.
II. ELIGIBLE ANIMALS A. Animals must meet the ownership requirements listed above. B. To be eligible for points from placings at the District, State and National shows, the animal must have been shown by one of the Ohio Junior member-owners. C. Junior exhibitors must show their own animals to be considered for Junior awards. Exceptions will be made for exhibitors who may be physically impaired, have two animals showing in the same class or must be absent on show day due to other commitments. In case of these exceptions, another boy or girl who meets the age requirements of the respective breed may show the animal with the authorization of the breed superintendent. Such authorization must be sought in writing, prior to the show and verified by a signed notice by the person in charge of the conflicting activity. III. POINT SYSTEM A. Spring Expo Show and Ohio State Fair Junior Show – 20 points for first place through two points for tenth place. Note: Ohio Junior Holstein Association members too old to show in the Junior show at the Ohio State Fair may use open class placings against Juniors’ animals owned and shown by Juniors. Juniors must be under 21 as of January 1, 2011. B. Points from placings from any National Junior Show, designated by the National Junior Advisory Committee, can be substituted in place of a lower point total received from placing at either the Ohio State Fair or the Spring Dairy Expo. The animal must be exhibited by one of the Junior owners to be eligible for points. If the animal is not shown by one of the Junior owners at a show, it cannot earn Junior All-Ohio points, and points from placings at the National Junior Show cannot be substituted. C. District Shows – Ten points for any animal shown. Note: It is recommended that districts report placings of all District Juniors showing. Dry cows have been eliminated from Spring Dairy Expo and State Fair but will continue at the District level, because no points can be substituted at the District level. No dry cow points from any National shows can be substituted for any milking cow class. D. In case of ties, two awards will be given. 48 | OHIO NEWS | 9-10/2013
IV. HOW TO ENTER A. Submit a 5” x 7” professional photograph of the animal. All photos of heifers must be current year photos. If you have taken a photo of a two-year-old cow, this photo can be used for Junior Two-Year-Old, Senior Two-Year-Old, Junior Three-Year-Old and Senior Three-Year-Old cows. If you have the photo taken as a three-year-old, then this photo can be used for the Three-Year-Old and the Four-Year-Old photo. If taken at four years, the photo can be used for the Four- and Five-YearOld photo. If taken as a five year old, this photo can be used for the Five-Year-Old, Aged and 125,000 Pound Cow. (These photo changes are also used in the All-Ohio rules.) B: Submit a copy of both sides of the animal's registration certificate showing ownership of the animal and transfer dates. Photo, certificate and completed application must be received by the Ohio Holstein Association Office, Wooster, Ohio, by December 1, 2013. C. The application forms will be available from the Ohio Holstein office and will be printed in the September/October News. EXAMPLES: Joe Junior owns Bessie. He exhibits other animals at the Spring Expo but does not show Bessie at the Spring Expo. He shows her in her class at his district show and places first. He shows her at the state fair and places fourth. He now has: 10 points from the district show and 14 points from the state fair. That is a total of 24 points. He then shows her at the National Junior Show and places second. The points earned at the National Junior Show may be substituted for the state fair points. He cannot substitute the placing at the National Junior Show for the Spring Expo points he missed by not showing Bessie there. After the substitution, Joe and Bessie have 10 points from the district and 18 points from the National Junior Show for a total of 28. Jane Junior owns Bossie. She has to attend a school function during the Spring Expo Show. She contacts the show management ahead of time and asks permission to have her heifer shown by another Junior member. Jane’s Junior friend and Bossie place fifth at the Spring Expo Show. Jane does show her heifer at the State Fair and at the National Junior Show and places second at each. She also showed Bossie at her District Show and placed first. Jane’s points from the Spring Expo Show (she is eligible because she asked permission and had another Junior show Bossie), from the State Fair and from the District are: 12+18+10=40. However, Jane CAN substitute her National Junior Show placing for the Spring Expo Show. Her new total is: 18+18+10=46. Dick Junior owns Flo. He enters her in the Spring Expo, but Dick’s dad shows Flo in her class. Dick shows Flo at the state fair and at his district show. He places third at each. He then takes her to the National Junior Show and Dick shows her there to third place. After the state fair and the district show, Dick and Flo have 16+10=26. Dick cannot substitute the National Junior Show placing for the placing Flo and his dad earned at the Spring Expo. Because Dick did not show his own animal or ask permission to have another Junior show, his animal at the Spring Expo Show, he cannot receive any points for the Spring Expo Show and placings from another show cannot be used in place of the Spring Expo Show. See the Junior All-Ohio entry form on page 49.

FROM YOUR REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE… by Glenn Sageser
R
egistering your Holstein cattle unlocks many avenues that can sometimes be overlooked in the rigors of day-to-day chores and life. The strength of our breed is not only in the Glenn Sageser diversity of our cattle, but also in that of our members. As an Association, we work hard to provide programs and services that will provide benefit and add value to the many different segments of our membership, whether you milk 30, 300 or 3,000 cows. Your registration certificate and pedigree increase the value of your herd by providing reliable, accurate information that can be trusted by any buyer or seller of cattle. Proper identification results in improved breeding and milk records, along with allowing you to make continual genetic progress and manage the inbreeding levels of your herd. The Holstein Association USA web site provides free tools such as the Inbreeding Calculator to help you make more informed mating decisions (visit www.holsteinusa.com and click on Pedigree Information, then Inbreeding Calculator to check it out). Registered animals provide additional opportunities for marketing, whether you’re selling a calf in a local club sale or exporting embryos or live cattle around the world. Genomic technology is providing additional opportunities to learn more about your cattle, potentially opening more doors for marketing females, or even selling bulls through AI.

Our youth can really benefit from participation in Holstein activities as well. Time and time again we hear stories at farms about experiences with Little Britches shows, visits to Cow Camp, showmanship and friends at county or state fairs, as well as state and national Holstein conventions, with the many activities and contests. Holstein Association USA provides many activities for youth throughout the year to help educate them and build enthusiasm for Holstein cattle. Visit www.holsteinusa.com/ juniors to get an idea for the programs available. Aside from providing youth with many activities and experiences, attending shows, meetings and conventions is an excellent way for adults to meet other Registered breeders and promote their genetics. Registered Holstein breeders are a tremendous group of people, and it’s a real pleasure to meet and visit with all of you about your farms, cattle and goals. Take full advantage of the opportunities provided to you through your Registered Holstein cattle, and pass along the word to neighbors that might not yet be involved. Bring them to a county Holstein picnic, or invite them to ride along with you to a meeting, sale or show for the day. Holstein Association USA offers a Start-Up program that allows breeders the chance to build registry status on their grade animals in an efficient and cost-effective manner. If you have friends or neighbors with the great Holstein cow, be sure to share the many opportunities for them and their family. If there is anything I can do to help you get more from your Holstein USA membership or cattle in 2013, please don’t hesitate to give me a call. If you would like assistance to answer questions or provide on-farm service, I can be reached at 502-834-7868.
