From the President
Looking Around the Lot
by Joe Miley GREETINGS! It is hard to believe another year’s activities are well under way at the Ohio Holstein Association. We were fortunate to end last year on a positive note. The Joe Miley Ohio Multi-Breed Sale held November 19, 2011, was a success as the All-Breeds average was $2,147.16 and the Holsteins averaged $2,624.07 on 54 lots. The sale resulted in a profit of $4,817.51 for Ohio Holstein. The December board meeting was held December 13 at the Kelgren Center at Select Sires. There were several items of interest discussed. Ken Janes reported on behalf of the sale committee that there would be some changes in health testing requirements for this year’s sales. Dr. Brad Garrison helped to outline the new requirements, and the new guidelines are explained in an article written by Dr. Garrison in this issue of the News. Please take time to read the article, and if you have questions, direct them to Don, Ken, Barb or Dr. Brad. Our schedule for the 2012 sales is as follows: • The Convention Sale, March 16 at the the Richland County Fairgrounds • The Buckeye Classic Sale on March 30 at the Spring Dairy Expo • The Summer Sale on August 25 in Wooster • The Fall All-Breeds Sale on November 17, also in Wooster. It was also reported that the Breed Improvement Committee is exploring the possibility of organizing an annual bus trip. Stay tuned for details. Plans were finalized for the State Convention. I would like to encourage everyone to attend the Annual Meeting Saturday morning at 9:00 as there are many things that will be discussed, and the officer elections should be interesting as well. I wish the best of luck to the other officer candidates. The Vice-President candidate is Dallas Rynd; running for Secretary are Cathy Berg and Katey Lora, and also on the ballot for Treasurer are Lisa Kerr and Ray Twining. District leaders, please

encourage your membership to fill your delegate seats! The next meeting of the board will be a reorganization meeting on March 17 following the Annual Meeting luncheon. Any district interested in hosting the 2013 Ohio Holstein Annual Meeting should put together a proposal to be presented to the board at that time. On a slightly different note, I send a thank you to Scott Higgins and Jenny Hubble for the work they do at Ohio Dairy Producers Association. If you are not aware of what all they do for all dairy producers, please go to the ODPA web site and check it out. This is a very active and important
organization, and I would encourage all dairy producers and dairy industry personnel in Ohio to consider becoming a member. The benefits are numerous! That website is ohiodairyproducers.org. Once again, I thank everyone whose involvement and hard work make Ohio Holstein a vital and progressive organization. If you are not involved, please consider becoming active at some level. The more input we have, the stronger we become. Everyone is welcome!! Feel free to contact me with any comments, questions or concerns. Hope to see everyone in March! JOE

District 8 Breeders Welcome the 2012 Ohio Holstein Convention The BERG FAMILY of Be-Ware Holsteins, Bellville, moved to District 8 from District 1 in 1990. They were looking for more cropland and better weather and found both in southern Richland County. At that time, the family consisted of Walter, Regina, Becky and Peter. Over the past 20 years, Becky and Peter have both graduated from The Ohio State University, have married and have families their own. Becky and her husband Dan Barker and children Derek and Kayla raise and show hogs in Morrow County and show Holsteins in-between. They are members of the District 4 Holstein Club. Becky was the 1993 Ohio Holstein Queen and currently is the Pictured in Italy in 2010, from left are Walter and Regina Berg; ABS Italia representative Extension Director and 4-H Educator in Ricardo Bertolotti; Collin, Cathy, Peter and Aaron Berg; and host Alessio Marchioron at his Gegania Holstein Farm near Vincenza. When the next generation, Clarence (Clancey), took over the farm in 1952, they were milking 20 cows, mostly Brown Swiss. Clarence and his wife Nancy were married in 1956 and had six children, with sons Rick and Dave staying on the farm. Both attended The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute at Wooster, Rick in Dairy Science and Dave in Crop Production. The dairy herd grew to 120 Holsteins by the early 1980s, and Rick and Dave formed a partnership with their father in the mid-1980s. The farm continued to expand, building a double-8 herringbone parlor in 1992, increasing rented land to 900 acres, building a 120 cow free stall barn in 1999 and purchasing 100 registered cows, mostly from Canada. From that point, they really started to improve on the quality of their Registered Holsteins. Rick and Dave Conrad in their new milking parlor 8 | OHIO NEWS | 1-2/2012

Dakota. Carol, the matriarch of this family, was sold in February 2008 to Ernie Kueffner. In 2007 Conrads purchased their second foundation pedigree cow at the Spring Dairy Expo Sale: Ri-Val-Re Shtle Desirae-ET. She has done well in the show ring giving them three All-Ohio nominations. She has seven sons in AI and daughters by Bolton, Zenith, Ramos, Super, Sebastion and Goldwyn. The Bolton was sold at the 2009 Ohio Spring Expo Sale to Gordon Lamb of New York. Con-River Zenith Ashley-ET EX-91 is this year’s Junior All-Ohio Junior ThreeYear-Old and Reserve All-Ohio Junior Three-Year-Old. ConRiver 1217 Ramos Lis-ET VG-86, a two-year-old, was Reserve Intermediate Champion behind Ashley at the 2010 District 8 Show. Con-River 1389 Super-ET is consigned to the Ohio Convention Sale on March 16, 2012. She looks SUPER. A September 2010 heifer bred (but not confirmed at print time) with a GTPI of 2070 and 11 generations of Very Good or Excellent behind, she would be a great investment. The other daughters by Super Sebastion and Goldwyn are not yet milking. At the July 2010 classification, they added three new Excellent cows and six new Very Good two-year-olds from these two purchased families, proving how these foundation animals have added value to the herd. The most recent improvements at Conrad Farms are a new double-10 parallel parlor, completed in 2010, and installing waterbeds in their free-stall barn.
In 2006 they purchased the first of two foundation pedigree cows, Ri-Val-Re Finley Carol, at the Spring Dairy Expo Sale in Columbus. Two years later as a milking Fall Yearling, she became their first All-American nomination. Carol was flushed as a heifer and produced five daughters, two by Lucky Mike and two by FBI. One was Con-River FBI Lucy-ET, which later became a Junior All-American nomination, also as a milking Fall Yearling. The other daughter, E90 Con-River Linda-ET by Gibson, had a natural daughter, Con-River Dundee Cindy VG-88. One of Cindy’s flushes was to Shottle and produced five daughters. One daughter, Con-River 1048 Shottle-ET, sold at Mike Deaver’s sale in Madison, Wisconsin, to Dave Dyment. She won her class as a Senior Two-Year-Old and was Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion. This fall she won her class as a Senior Three-Year-Old at the Prince Edward Island Show. Another daughter sold at the Ohio Convention Sale to Lingle’s Dairy in Wayne County, and Conrads are milking two daughters, one of which they hope to have in the show ring this spring. Con-River FBI Lucy-ET has done well for herself, having been All-Ohio four times in addition to her Junior nomination. She has many daughters from flushing to Pronto, Blade and Talent. Two of the Talent daughters are *RC, one of which sold at the Spring Expo sale to Trent Neuenschwander. The other one at the farm is a GP-84 twoyear-old that gave Conrads the first red and white calf in this cow family. Conrads are excited about her and hope you will see a lot of her in the future. Con-River 1155 Talent-ET was sold this spring at the Field of Dreams Sale in Iowa, was second-place Senior Two-Year-Old at the Iowa State Fair and has made her way all the way to South

George started with Registered Holsteins in the late 1910s with two registered cows that came from the Polk area. George joined one of Ohio’s first milk testing associations and later had two National Production leaders as two-yearold cows. Dad William started with Registered Holsteins in 1955 when he purchased two heifer calves from the Dalton at Wakeman. There a love affair started with the great Black and White Cow! Lunds started showing at the Ohio State Fair in 1956, and over the years they have only missed three years of showing. They have been blessed with some very good cows and a world full of friends. So far, there have been four Junior All-Americans, two Honorable Mention All-Americans and a number of All-Ohio and Junior All-Ohio winners. Bill and Carl Lund have judged many shows across northern Ohio. Bill now has a crop insurance agency that is one of the largest in Ohio. Carl has been a 4-H advisor for 40 years and has served the Ohio Holstein Association as a board member, officer and show chairman for many years. Carl and Ruth's son Bryan has left his mark on the industry, having won all three divisions of Showmanship at the Ohio State Fair. IN 2011 he had first place Senior ThreeYear-Old and Intermediate Champion Ayrshire at the Ohio State Fair. Carl and Ruth's daughter Julie was the 1991 Ohio Holstein Queen. His grandchildren Mike, Allen, Courtney, Matt, Noah and Abby are doing well with their projects. Presently Lunds are milking 40-45 cows with a BAA of 106.5 and farming 180 acres of corn and hay. They all remain very active in the community, Bryan as a 4-H advisor for 20 years and Bill leading Huron County’s Tea Party. As Carl says, “We all serve our Lord in as many ways as possible.” Carl Lund is the retiring District 8 president.
The TWINING FAMILY has milked cows in Lorain County starting in 1849 with great-great-grandfather Charles A. Twining. Twining Farm is a small Registered Holstein farm operated by Ray and Sara Twining with a lot of help from six children and five grandchildren. The present farm was purchased by Ronald and Russell Twining in 1942. Although there were always cows on the farm, Registered Holsteins were introduced in 1956 with the purchase of 20 head from an Ed Bowers sale. Twinings have been 100 per cent Registered since 1976. They consign to state sales and have purchased new cow families through state sales.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT DISTRICT 8 by Ray Twining, retiring District 8 secretary District 8, composed of Ashland, Erie, Huron, Lorain, Medina and Richland counties, is pleased to host the 2012 Ohio Holstein Convention and Sale along with a barn meeting hosted by Be-Ware Holsteins, Walter and Regina Berg and family, Bellville. Bellville is about 13 miles south of Mansfield on I-71. The Convention Sale will be at the Richland County Fairgrounds at 11:00 a.m., followed by the barn meeting at Berg Farms. While District 8 was at the 200-member level in the 1960s and 1970s, it is currently at the 80- to 90-member level. The District 8 Show is held at the Lorain County Fair at Wellington with 120 to 130 animals shown each year. At one time, Wellington was known as the Cheese Capital of the World with 75 cheese factories and well over 100 plants shipping cheese by rail from Wellington, Lorain County, northern Ashland County, western Medina County

Ohio’s newest 96-point cow is Leafy Lane Durham Trudy. She was just confirmed at a Holstein Classifiers Conference at Triple-T-Holsteins, D13, at the end of January. Congratulations to the owners, Triple-T Holsteins, Pat Conroy and Entourage. • Roger Baker, Wooster, D-7, has been elected to the Ohio Farm Bureau Board representing Ashland, Summit, Medina and Wayne counties. He fills the seat previously held by Bob Slicker, who retired after 12 years on the board. • Mary Lou Topp, D-14, is a candidate for the Greatest Grandmother Award. She took her grandchildren, Keaton, Kinley, Madeline and Aubree, to Disney World over the Christmas vacation. Mary Lou had high praise for the vacation home of Pete and Jean Spike, D-11, where they stayed while in Florida. • District 3 has decided they will not have a Harvest Hills Sale in fall of 2012. • Lorain County 4-H member Demi Dovin donated $1,000 from the sale of her market steers at the Lorain County Fair to a local domestic violence center. The steers were purchased by John Dovin and Sunrise Cooperative. Demi is a freshman at Firelands High School and is a member of the Lorain County Steer Club and Wellington Farmers 4-H Club. She also works on her family’s dairy operation, Dovin Dairy Farms, D-8, where she helps vaccinate and feed calves and with bookwork. • David and Sandy Schlauch and Aaron and Brandi Schlauch have a new enterprise at Velvet-View Dairy, D-7. They are producing almost 400 gallons of wholesome whole milk yogurt a week. According to Brandi, they are the only licensed farmstead yogurt producer in Ohio. With the increased interest in fresh, locally produced products, Velvet-View yogurt is already in a few restaurants and markets. • In addition to being featured in this issue of the News, the waterbeds at Conrad’s Dairy, D-8, have been featured in newspapers and TV spots in many areas. 12 | OHIO NEWS | 1-2/2012

When I have only a short space to fill, it is a good sign that this issue is packed with news. Thanks to all who helped with news items including Dr. Brad Garrison, committee chairs, columnists and District 8 officers and members. Thank you to Bernie Heisner and COBA/Select Sires for once again sponsoring the All-Ohio Calendar, which is a part of this issue. Also, thank you to advertisers from District 8, sale consignors, All-Ohio winners, businesses, contract advertisers and everyone who supported this issue with the ads that make the text possible. Looking ahead, advertisers, contributors, breeders and businesses, this is your ad invitation for the next issue. We set the deadline for the 20th of February and would like to hear from you by that time. Unlike Douglas Adams, who says, “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.” I love deadlines because it is much easier to correctly combine pictures and text and tweak the information when it comes in on time. I dislike the whooshing sound they make as they fly by as it slows down the progress of the News, contributes to possible errors and can delay mailing. For the March-April issue, I already have space reservations in addition to contract ads. In March-April we will have reports from the convention and announcement of the industry sponsor for the May-June membership issue. District secretaries and news reporters, send information from your annual meetings, new officers, award winners and interesting GRAPEVINE items. Also please share notice of show dates and any activities scheduled after April and through the summer.

Nominating Committee Report — JANUARY 2012 The 62nd Annual Meeting of the Ohio Holstein Association will be held March 17 at the Quality Inn & Suites, near Bellville, Ohio. John Spreng, chairman of the Nominating Committee, provided the following slate of candidates.
PRESIDENT The Comittee has nominated current president Joe Miley to serve a second term as president of the Association. Joe Miley and his wife Diana are contributing members of Miley Holstein Farms in District 7. Along with other family members, Miley milks 240 Registered Holsteins. They farm approximately 500 acres of corn and hay and have full- and part-time employees. Miley Holsteins have been shown at local, state and national shows by Joe and Diana’s two children, Jason, a 2011 graduate of The Ohio State University in dairy science, and Anna, a Northwestern High School senior, and by other family members. Joe has served several times as a District 7 officer and as board member, treasurer and vice president of the Ohio Association. He has been a delegate to the National Holstein Convention, serves on Ohio committees, and he and his wife are advisors for the Ohio Holstein Junior Association. Off the farm, Joe is a member of the Ohio Dairy Producers Association Board. He has been a youth basketball and baseball coach and involved in the Northwestern High All-Sports Booster Club. He enjoys watching his children participate in their various activities.
VICE PRESIDENT The Committee has nominated current vice-president Dallas Rynd to serve a second term as vice-president of the Association. Dallas Rynd and his wife Judy Wolford own and operate Silver Mist Holsteins near Ashville, Ohio. Dallas and Judy moved their 45-cow herd to Ohio in 1992. Prior to that time, Dallas was in partnership with his brothers at Rynd Home Farm near Cochranton, Pennsylvania. Dallas has served in numerous offices for District 5. He has served several years on the Pickaway County Farm Bureau Board and has been a member of the township zoning committee. Dallas enjoys showing cattle and participates at the local, state and national level. The herd has been very successful and has had multiple All-Ohio winners and several All-American nominations. Dallas is especially proud of the many youth activities in which the Silver Mist herd has been able to participate in over the years. It has hosted the district FFA dairy judging contest on several occasions and has had numerous farm tours for youth from kindergartners to college students. Additionally, many nonfarm youth have been given the opportunity to work on the farm and to participate in 4-H and FFA by showing Silver Mist animals. (Dallas and Judy were featured on the cover of the November-December 2011 Ohio News with an article on page 8 and their ad on page 9.)

A great job, and congratulations to the All-Ohio award winners and the six All-American nominations from Ohio. This is a huge accomplishment and well-deserved recognition. It takes an incredible amount of dedication, time and expense, coupled with some frustration and joy. Thank you, COBA/Select Sires, for your sponsorship of the All-Ohio calendar again this year with 28 of the All-Ohio winners sired by Select Sires. The All-Ohio awards have also gotten the attention of the general manager of the Ontario

Holstein Branch. They are interested that our program works with a point system and eliminates any political factors. It’s always a compliment to hear that Holstein organizations, even out of the U.S., acknowledge how Ohio Holstein, the directors and members run our Association. The selections for the Ohio Spring Sale, held in conjunction with the Ohio Holstein Convention, are in the final stages, and this year’s sale on March 16 will have some incredible offerings from genomics and type that will compete at any level. On March 30, the Buckeye Classic Sale will be held during the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo. Comanaged with the Buckeye Dairy Club, selections are still being made; please contact Laura Gordon (chairman of the Buckeye Classic Sale) at 330-466-2893 or me at 304-3761788. This year’s promises to be an exceptional sale with many outstanding consignments with show-winning type and pedigrees that already have contracts selling. Membership is coming in well, and our goal again this year is to surpass last year’s increase over the previous year. Keep up the good work! This is what helps to make Ohio Holstein the strong organization it continues to be. Make your plans to attend the Convention March 16 and 17, hosted by District 8. Hope to see you all there! Take care,
Don

INDIANA Mike JONES
From
National Director I would like to start by saying how fast the first six months have gone on, being on the Holstein Association USA (HAUSA) board. So far it has been a very educational and rewarding experience. I hope everyone has had a good winter. It has been a very mild one in west central Indiana to this point, with only a handful of mornings below 20 degrees. Cows are milking very well, but like most people in the Midwest, hay supply is going to be very tight. I would like to congratulate everyone who has an All-American nominee and wish you good luck. I would also like to congratulate PineTree Dairy on a very successful sale. In HAUSA news, at this point all indications are that HAUSA will have another outstanding year. We are going to register around 350,000 Holsteins in 2011. This total will be one of the best in the 126-year history of the Holstein Association. Through November, the Holstein Complete Program has 253,534 animals in 1,817 herds enrolled in the program. This is an increase of six percent over last year. There have been 167,000

pedigrees issued, which is an increase of two percent. In the classification program, 204,958 animals in 4,520 herds have been classified, which is a one percent increase compared to the last year. In the set program, 77,000 have been classified, which is a decrease of twelve percent. So all in all, it has been a very good year. In other news, don’t forget the regional meeting coming up. I am sure Esther has a schedule for the time and place for the one closest to you. I would like you to think about candidates for Distinguished Young
Holstein Breeder, Elite Breeder and Distinguished Leadership Awards and bring your thoughts to the regional meetings or turn them in to Don, and he can get the necessary applications for these great awards. Don’t forget the Ohio meeting in March. We will hope to see you at one of Regional Meetings (I am assigned to the February 11, 2012, meeting at Mount Pleasant, Michigan, in conjunction with the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference) or at the Ohio meeting. Thanks!

As a service to our members, the News Committee Chairs felt it was important to inform our members, if you haven’t already heard, read or been informed, about the new PROPOSED CHILD LABOR LAW REVISIONS for agriculture. The federal child labor provisions, authorized by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938, also known as the child labor laws, were enacted to ensure that when young people work, the work is safe and does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities. These provisions also provide limited exemptions. On September 2, 2011, the Department published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to revise the child labor regulations to strengthen the safety requirements for young workers employed in agriculture. The current child labor agricultural hazardous occupations orders have not been updated since the 1970s. The department is proposing a dramatic updating of these regulations based information and recommendations from the Wage and Hour Division (WHD) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as well as a commitment to bring the rules for agricultural employment and the more stringent rules that apply to the employment of children in nonagricultural workplaces closer together. The proposed regulations would not apply to children working on farms owned by their parents. The proposed updates include: • Strengthening current child labor prohibitions regarding agricultural work with animals in timber operations, manure pits, storage bins and pesticide handling.
• Prohibiting hired farm workers under the age of 16 from employment in the cultivation, harvesting and curing of tobacco. • Prohibiting youth in both agricultural and nonagricultural employment from using electronic devices, including communication devices, while operating power-driven equipment. • Prohibiting hired farm workers under the age of 16 from operating almost all power-driven equipment. A similar prohibition has existed as part of the nonagricultural child labor provisions for more than 50 years. A limited exemption would permit some student-learners to operate certain farm implements and tractors (when equipped with proper rollover protection structures and seat belts) under specified conditions. • Preventing children under 18 years of age from being employed in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm-product raw materials. Prohibited places of employment would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions. (http://www.dol.gov/whd/CL/AG_NPRM.htm) The comment period for these proposals has passed. Although comments were due on December 1, it is still Child Labor Laws – continued on page 40

important to stress to Members of Congress how these proposed changes would affect farms, agricultural education, FFA and 4-H. Many state and national agriculture organizations have submitted formal comments, predominantly “against” the proposed changes due to age restrictions, the limitations to “son or daughter” exemptions, etc. There are many articles and comments out there including Ohio Farm Bureau (http://ofbf.org/policy-andpolitics/article/458/), Grange and more. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack addressed the issue in his Dec. 12 blog. Please take time to read this. http://blogs.usda.gov/2011/12/12/clar ifying-the-department-oflabor%E2%80%99s-child-laborproposal/ Please take time to become aware of these issues, and contact your congressman with your thoughts and concerns. It is important to our way of life.

More “Rudy Missy” influence… We were pleased to add Pine-Tree Shottle Winnie-ET to our breeding program. Called one of the “best of Rudy Missy,” she was VG-87 as a 2-year-old and is a daughter of P.T. Missy Winnie-ET, the VG-87 Wizard daughter of Rudy Missy. Shottle Winnie has 5 brothers in AI that average +2054 GTPI. We will be flushing her soon to Mogul, which promises exciting potential. She was fresh just before sale day and is doing well at Rausch’s R-Style Holsteins. At 3-00 and 58 days fresh, she has 5,643# milk with 243# fat (4.3%) and 184# protein (3.3%.) She joins P.T. Zenith Mint-ET that we purchased in the Snapshots of Starmark sale in 2009. Zenith Mint is a daughter of the well-known P.T. Outside Mint-ET. She is just fresh again and off to a good start. At 4-08 and 62 days fresh, she has 5,777# milk with 298# fat (5.2%) and 186# protein (3.2%.) Another fortunate purchase was P.T. Burt Bea 4299-ET, a VG-86 2-year-old. She has a great outcross pedigree, making her attractive to many; she came with three contracts from ABS and one from Select Sires. She settled in very nicely at R-Style and has been successfully flushed to Epic. At 1-11 and 202 days fresh, she has 19,298# milk with 614# fat, 609# protein. Thank you to the Steiners for making these cows available. Congratulations on your great sale!

OSU Dairy Judging Team Travels to Texas In an atmosphere of cowboy boots and hats, creased jeans and longhorns, the dairy judging team recently traveled to the Ft. Worth Stock Show in Texas. However, our cow interest focused on the type you milk daily! Derik Baumer, Matthew Borchers, Rachel Foureman, Dan Nicol and Coach Ayars with her husband left the snowy landscape of Ohio early on January 13. In return, Texas offered sunshine and temperatures that reached nearly 70°. The annual dairy judging contest on the show grounds was attended by 14 teams from across the country. The dairy exhibitors and staff provided an outstanding contest for their guests. The OSU team came home with rosettes and plaques as proof of their success. The team placed third overall, narrowly missing a second place finish by three points. Rachel was sixth-high individual; Derik was ninth high, with Dan following in tenth place. In the Holstein breed, we were the high team, and Derik was the high individual, with Dan in fifth. In the reasons portion of the contest, this foursome earned fifth place. The trip was not all about work, as we were also able to tour the Dallas Cowboys stadium, historic Ft.Worth Stockyards and the Justin Boot Outlet. A farm visit also took us to the Bridgeport area, where Mike Moyers (current President of the Brown Swiss Association) provided us two cow classes. Our visit was more complete when we spent an evening at the stock show rodeo in the Will Rogers Coliseum.

Giving Thanks for a Successful Ohio Multi-Breed Fall Sale by Barb Lumley
The Sale Committees for the Ohio Holstein Association and the Ohio Ayrshire Breeders Association could give thanks for many things at the Ohio Multi-Breed Fall Sale held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, Ohio, on Saturday, November 19, 2011. It was a crisp, sunny November day; the barn crew presented the cattle in top form; the consignors had sent some of their best; the youth leading them in the ring did a great job, and the bleachers were filled with buyers ready to purchase outstanding dairy cattle that would contribute to their breeding program and help fill their bulk milk tanks. The sale began with the Ayrshires. Lot #5, Spring-Run Chancellor Jackie, a three-year-old recently fresh, was the top seller at $2,250. Sired by Palmyra Recruiter’s Chancellor-ET, she was sharp and dairy with a nice udder and was purchased by Ed Gill, Creston, Ohio. Lot #4, Spring-Run Denver Rose, was also the choice of Ed Gill for $2,050. She had recently calved and was classified at 86 points as a three-year-old, and she had a nice record as a two-year-old already completed. Five outstanding Ayrshire Jackpot calves were presented with the winning bidder having the opportunity to take his or her choice. They were born from January 5, 2011, to March 5, 2011, and the selling prices ranged from $1,050 to $1,500. To be eligible for Jackpot prizes, the calves may only be registered to Junior breeders anywhere, boy or girl, under 21 years of age as of January 1. Twenty-five per cent of the sale price will be put into a jackpot, which will be awarded in the form of cash
prizes at the third fall sale (three years) following the purchase of the heifers. Prizes will be awarded on the first completed lactation up to 305 days on the ME Energy Corrected Milk. All Jackpot heifers are automatically entered in the Ohio National Futurity. The 19 Ayrshires averaged $1,482 and sold into Ohio and Pennsylvania. Lot #23, Brook Hollow Masquerade-ET, consigned by Stephanie Yost and Delbert and Heather Yoder, West Salem, Ohio, sold for $2,750 to top the Brown Swiss consignments. Sired by R Hart BC Collection, classified Excellent 90 and milking 93 pounds per day, she was purchased by Robert Himes, Lisbon, Ohio. Second-high Brown Swiss consignment was Lot #22, Oakson-S Wonder Suzy-Q, a bred heifer sired by Top Acres C Wonderment-ET and due in July to Blessing Banker Agenda-ET. Consigned by Hannah Eades, DeGraff, Ohio, she sold for $1,800 to Mark Suttle, Orrville, Ohio. Six Brown Swiss consignments averaged $1,758 and sold into Ohio and Pennsylvania. Tres Colles IVN IJA-Bea, Lot #33 born June 16, 2011, topped the Milking Shorthorn consignments, selling for $1,700 to Doug Fenton. Consigned by Tres Colles Farm, Chillicothe, Ohio, this fancy calf will be parading the show ring in 2012. Sired by Tres Colles Redrama Ivan EXP, her dam was the 2011 Ohio State Fair Futurity winner and the fourth-place Senior Two-Year-Old at World Dairy Expo. Selling for $1,400 was Lot #32, Homeless Nitro Molly, a nice Spring Calf sired by Mysha WO Robin Nitro EXP and consigned by Alex Weiss, Weissway Farm, Arcanum, Ohio. Fall Sale – continued on page 50

Your Beef Checkoff Dollars at Work Your Beef Checkoff: Investing in Beef Safety, Nutrition and Promotion
Research
Bold News for the New Year New research shows that eating lean beef every day can be good for heart health by improving cholesterol levels. That’s what a new checkoff-funded study called BOLD (Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet) shows – that adding lean beef to the most recommended heart-healthy diet can lower heart disease risk by reducing total and “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. The BOLD clinical study (Effects on Lipids, Lipoproteins and Apolipoproteins), conducted by Pennsylvania State University researchers, evaluated adults with moderately elevated cholesterol levels, who followed four diets with varying amounts of beef, for five weeks each, to measure the impact of each diet on measures of heart health, such as total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels.
Subjects following the BOLD diet experienced a 10-percent decrease in LDL cholesterol from the start of the study. After five weeks, there were significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in the BOLD diet. “The BOLD study provides new research that health professionals can use to update their dietary recommendations with scientific findings showcasing how lean beef can maintain and even improve heart health,” says Brian Healey, cow-calf producer from Davis, Okla., and vice-chair of the checkoff ’s Joint Human Nutrition Research Committee. And research shows that when people include food they enjoy, like lean beef, they are more likely to stick to their heart-healthy diet longer. Consumers can follow the same hearthealthy diet as participants of the BOLD study by using recipes from checkoff ’s Healthy Beef Cookbook, a collection of delicious, nutrient-rich recipes for America’s favorite protein, beef. Contact the Ohio Beef Council at 614-873-6736 to get your issue of the Healthy Beef Cookbook.
Promotion
Ohio Checkoff Programs Team-up to Strikeout Hunger The Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio Corn Marketing Program recently joined arms with the Ohio Beef Council to aid in the funding of a season-long promotion with reigning Triple-A National Champions, Columbus Clippers to strikeout hunger with Ohio’s Cattlemen. For each strikeout recorded by the Clippers in the 2012 season, the Ohio Beef Council, with help from the participating organizations, will work with the Mid Ohio Foodbank to donate one pound of lean ground beef to struggling central Ohioans. Last year the Clipper’s pitching staff recorded 1,142 strikeouts throughout the season, equating to a potential 4,000 meal donations by season’s end. But, let’s not stop at 4,000! Checkoff staffers invite you to join in the effort to reach 10,000 meals in 2012. Stay tuned for future issues of the Ohio Cattlemen to learn how you can join the cause. You can also visit www. ohiobeef.org or contact Andy Johnson at 614-873-6736 to learn more as the season draws closer.
Education
BEEFonomics Takes the Beef Story to the Classroom
On average, students in today’s classroom are three generations removed from farming and agriculture. These students are also a part of a growing generation of
consumers that are extremely interested in where their food comes from and how it was raised. This lends the beef intdustry a great opportunitiy to tell its story while assuring that others don’t do it for us. The newly developed BEEFonomics program will work to accomplish the task of telling the beef story within family and consumer science classrooms around Ohio. BEEFonomics will encompass all aspects of the beef industry (from pasture to plate), providing students with a better understanding of where the great taste of beef comes from, how it gets to their plate and how to properly feature the product at dinner-time. OBC staffers are in the process of finalizing plans to execute pilot courses during the closing months of the 2011-2012 school year. BEEFonomics will look to the 2012-2013 school year for its official unveiling.
Cow Chow The Beef Checkoff recently launched “Cow Chow,” an online game and video series designed to answer common questions about cattle diets. The 10-question game and corresponding videos encourage consumers to explore what cattle eat from birth to the feedyard. Curious consumers can now see exactly what cattle really eat every day as they compete in an interactive game. The Cow Chow game and videos emphasize the attention cattle farmers and ranchers pay to their animals, their land and their communities. Be sure to visit www.explorebeef.org/cowchow.aspx to check out the fun educational tool for yourself. The Ohio Beef Council and the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board are responsible for developing programs that increase the demand for beef. For more information, contact the Ohio Beef Council, 10600 U.S. Highway 42, Marysville, Ohio 43040, 614-873-6736, beef@ ohiobeef.org.

can he find the mechanic’s phone number? Oh, never thought to look on that big calendar he gave you that hangs on the workshop wall! The kids are finally tired of swimming; the wife has changed her clothes and curled her hair, and it’s off to the evening banquet and entertainment. It will just be a fun and relaxing evening with friends and Holstein enthusiasts. There’s the phone again! What do you mean somebody ran off the road, hit a pole, and there is no electric? Hook the tractor up to the generator, and make sure there is plenty of fuel in it. Where’s the generator? Oh, I forgot. I loaned it to the neighbor a couple months ago; you will have to go get it. I hope nobody hit his pole! We will be heading back to the hotel soon. I have to go to meetings early in the morning. Let me know if you don’t get the cows milked. Gosh, that was a short night! Holstein people sure have a lot to talk about! Continental breakfast was pretty good; better find the meeting room. Ring! Ring! I’m in the middle of a meeting! What do you mean the heifers got the gate open, tore down the fence, went through the neighbor’s yard, crossed route 646, head-butted a car, and the deputies have them corralled just outside of town, waiting on you to bring the trailer just as soon as you get the flat tire fixed? The spare tire? Cross your fingers and check in the tool shed. Tell the sheriff I will call him when I get back. It’s good to hear that things are normal at home. I have to get back into that meeting — I’m running for office!
Just like everyone else in the country, Max and I have been listening to the political debates, reading the articles in the newspapers and listening to the experts trying to figure out Barb Lumley who’s hot and who’s not. We heard how all the politicians rushed to Iowa to try to be first in the Iowa caucus, then it was on to New Hampshire, and then South Carolina, and who knows what direction they are going in now. Max and I just have one question — “Who’s minding the store?” These people are governors, senators, representatives, etc. They have been on the road for months, and they all have jobs — important jobs — and those jobs pay well! Who is taking care of the problems at home while they are gone? And we all know, there are always problems at home when you decide to take a few days off. Just ask Dudley Dairyman what happens when he decides to attend the Ohio Holstein Association Annual Meeting and Convention! The suitcases are loaded; the wife and kids are in the car, and before he can get into the driver’s seat, someone comes running and yelling that his best excellent cow is starting to calve and needs help. After pulling a huge bull calf that he really didn’t want, and changing clothes again, he has the family settled in and heads down the road. However, when they stop to gas up and get some snacks, he suddenly realizes that he left his wallet and credit cards in the pants he changed after delivering the calf. Ignoring the looks from his wife and the moans from the back seat, he turns around and heads back home. They will only be a couple hours late getting to the hotel. Fortunately, when they finally arrive at the hotel, they are still holding the reservations. To late to go on the farm tours, they settle in; the kids Call or visit us head for the swimming pool; HABRUN’S the wife to the gift shop across the road (good thing he went INSURANCE SERVICE, INC. back for those credit cards!), Millersburg, OH • 880-340-3767 and Dudley drops onto the big www.habrunsinsurance.com comfortable bed in hopes of a nap before the evening Town Name • 555-555-5555 program. Then the phone website 170 South Clay Street rings. The hired man can’t get P.O. Box 347 the skid loader to run so he can Millersburg, Ohio 44654 feed silage to the cows. 1,000 delegates at Congress. I met people from around the country, including Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. The theme for the National 4-H Congress was based around becoming a “Catalyst for Change.” At Congress, we heard several motivational speakers including Miss America, attended various workshops about leadership and did community service projects. I met several people that I hope to remain friends with. I am looking forward to starting a new year that will be full of many new and exciting adventures. I recently auditioned for the spring musical and
received one of the leads in The Music Man. In May I will be graduating high school, and in August I will be going to college, which I am both nervous and excited for. To anyone who is thinking about running for 2012 Ohio Holstein Queen, I would highly recommend it. It is so rewarding in many ways. I have learned so much more about the dairy industry; I have developed my dairy judging skills, and I have met many wonderful people. I cannot finish my articles without mentioning the guidance and support I have received from Esther Welch, Queen’s Corner – continued on page 54
A 2 for 1 Deal! Esther Welch and I at the Canfield Fair
Hello again!! I cannot believe this is the last time I will be writing to you as the Ohio Holstein Queen. I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! This past year has been one of the most enjoyable ever. I have loved every minute of travelling to different shows around Ohio and into Kentucky. All of the shows that I have attended were run differently, and although some ran more smoothly than others, they were all great. I was warmly received by many, and I felt very welcome. I would especially like to thank Tim and Susan Van Gorden for being so welcoming to me. I enjoyed the afternoon that I was able to spend with them, and I am glad I got to see them at the Futurity during the State Fair. Not all of my favorite experiences have been at shows, however. I have enjoyed spending time travelling with my mom, dad and sister Macy. It was really something staying at a dumpy hotel filled with truckers and bikers, and eating breakfast at 1:00 in the morning. Thankfully, during our travels, there were only a couple minor problems with the GPS, and we never got too lost. During the past month, I have not gone to any shows, but I had the opportunity to go to Atlanta, Georgia, as an Ohio delegate, selected as the Dairy Achievement winner, to the National 4-H Congress. There were 28 delegates from Ohio and almost

Health Regulations for Animals Selling in Ohio Holstein Association Sales by Dr. Brad Garrison, New Pittsburg Large Animal Clinic Biosecurity protocols for the addition of purchased animals should be an important part of every dairy’s herd health plan. Health testing of consignments to Association sales are part of insuring disease risk introduction is minimized. Health testing essentially serves two purposes. First, it fulfills the requirements for dairy cattle to travel interstate to buyers across the country. Each state determines its own regulations for importing cattle. This can be confusing to consignors, buyers and sale managers. As an example, consider the import requirements of Ohio’s border states: • Michigan: Certificate of veterinary inspection with individual identification, no other testing. • Kentucky: Certificate of veterinary inspection, individual identification and a permit to import. • Indiana: Certificate of veterinary inspection, TB test on animals greater than six months old and a permit to import. • Pennsylvania: Certificate of veterinary inspection, no TB test, brucellosis test for nonvaccinated more than eight months old and vaccinated more than 14 months of age. To be adequately prepared for interstate shipment, Ohio cattle need TB and brucellosis testing. Many people ask if official calfhood vaccination for brucellosis is needed. In times past, vaccination was a requirement for importation to many states. It also served
HAROLD’S EQUIPMENT, INC.
to protect your herd from introducing this disease. This is no longer the case. Today, only a small handful of states still require OCV for entry. None of the major dairy states except California Dr, Brad Garrison require vaccination. Even California has a provision for registered nonvac-cinated animals to enter under a special permit. Discuss brucellosis vaccination with your herd veterinarian and make an informed decision about its use. BVD is a disease that can be introduced through persistently infected animals. Fortunately, tests of either blood (elisa-antigen, virus isolation) or ear notches (IHC, PCR) can identify these carrier animals. Please note that antibody level blood tests do not identify carrier animals. It is also important to remember PI animals are actually infected during gestation, and therefore, each calf born from a purchased animal should be tested for BVD-PI status. Johnes disease is a much more difficult disease to address. No simple negative Johnes test will ensure that an animal is not a carrier. The significance of a positive test is obvious, and that animal should not be merchandised. Although not perfect, presale screening for Johnes disease seems appropriate. It does not guarantee an animal will not be infected and later have a positive test of either blood or manure. In a time when milk quality is of extreme importance, utilizing SCC as a tool to evaluate infection rates and udder health can be helpful in herd purchases. Log scores greater than 4 (> 283,000 on actual score) are considered to be subclinical infections. Two consecutive SCC tests greater than log score 4 are defined to be a chronic infection. This information could be used to make both purchase and consignment decisions for our consignment sales. In light of the new agreement in regards to herd SCC and exporting milk products, udder health will continue to be more closely scrutinized. Finally, consulting your herd veterinarian for recommendations in regards to boostering respiratory and reproductive vaccines prior to sale animals leaving the farm is a good insurance policy to ensure a healthy transition to their new farm.
