From the President by Joe Miley Hello, once again! It is hard to believe we are headed toward the holiday season and winter already. Time surely seems to be passing at an everincreasing rate of speed! Lots of exciting things are happening at the Ohio Holstein Association. The Multi-Breed Fall Sale was a tremendous success with an average of $2,597 on 63 full lots. It was a beautiful day, and the bidding was spirited. We had several new consignors and quite a few new buyers. We are seeing a trend where we are getting more new volume buyers at each sale. We work very hard to offer the type of animals that people want to buy. Thank you to everyone who works so hard to make our sales successful. If anyone has suggestions for improvements or concerns, please contact Don, our sale committee chairpersons or ME! I would also like to remind everyone to plan to attend the Barn Meeting and Tag Sale at Springhill Farm on December 15. There will be an educational presentation by Don Bennink from North Florida Holsteins. If you have never heard him speak, it is well worth the trip. There will also be FOOD and the Springhill Tag Sale. It should be a great day. See page 6 for more information on this meeting, and report lunch reservations to the office by December 10. I am hearing that plans are coming along well for the annual meeting and sale in Sidney, March 8 and 9. If you haven’t attended an annual meeting for a while, I would strongly encourage you to make plans to be there. The committee is working very hard to make it a memorable experience. There will be an important election, activities for the Juniors and a great sale. Please make plans now to attend; we need everyone! Contact the office with any questions, and stay tuned for details. A few other notes: Membership is coming in at a great rate with several more new members than we expected.

The decision to print our own sale catalogs seems to be a good one, as it gives us so much more flexibility on content and number of copies, and it saves us money as well. A special Thank You to Pete Spike for his work on the catalogs as well as the work he continues to do on our web site! As I have mentioned once or twice before, the Ohio Holstein Association will only be as strong as we all make it, and all ideas are most welcome. Contact me anytime with questions or concerns, or contact the office. Thank you for the support I have received and for the work that the Board of Directors has done. As I have said before, this is a great Board! Hope to see everyone in Sidney March 8 and 9. — Joe

He moved his herd to Florida in 1980 and has been expanding ever since to a 2,400-acre operation and a herd of more than 4,500 milking age Registered Holsteins. Over the years, he has established himself as an industry leader around the world for his expertise on farming efficiency techniques and livestock genetics. He led the innovation of dairy cattle comfort with tunnel ventilation to enhance production and herd health. His farm has developed more than 750 Excellent cows, consistently ranks on cooperative quality honor rolls and received Premier Breeder and Exhibitor recognition. The farm is also know for its intern program that invites international participants interested in dairy farm management to work and learn on the farm. He has been an early adaptor of monitoring technology and environmental protection practices, including research trials of drugs and feed additives with the University of Florida’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Bennink has been active on dairy boards; he received the International Dairy Foods Association’s Innovative Dairy Farmer of the Year Award in 2005 and was named World Dairy Expo Dairyman of the Year in 2010. Family Matters at Paradise Valley Farms by Bill Ramsey At Paradise Valley Farms, Louisville, Ohio, it doesn’t matter if you’re talking cows or people, FAMILY MATTERS. Following in the footsteps of founders Paul and Catherine Ramsey, Paradise Valley is now owned by son Bill and Debbie, grandson Brian and Liz, and grandson Michael and Shelly Ramsey and their families. Bill and Debbie’s daughter, Brenda, our DVM, and her husband Nevin L’Amoreaux have been a huge part of our operation since returning home from Columbus 15 years ago. Our other daughter, Jill, has been full time at Paradise Valley for 18 years, and her husband Cory Smith has been our full-time Jack-of-all-trades for seven years. These four families have blessed us with 13 grandchildren from 15 to six years old. We have four hard-working and gifted employees. Nate Neubauer has been with us for 25 years, Mike and Yvonne Boyle for 13 years and Steve Schroer for two years. Our family has milked and owned registered Holsteins for five generations and have been 100% registered since 1970. My grandparents on both sides milked registered Holstein in the 1920’s. Milk prices and cattle prices will be important components of the future, thus the importance of Registered Holsteins. I am one of the most blessed and fortunate dairymen in the world. My wife Debbie was born in Canton, a true city girl, and we have been married for 40 years! For our first 30 years, we milked the a.m. milking while rearing four children. In the afternoon, Debbie turned her talents to her seamstress business making wedding gowns and bridesmaids’

dresses. A supportive farmer’s wife is hugely important in a family farm. We couldn’t be more proud and happy that our children and their spouses returned to the farm. Our oldest daughter, Brenda, our veterinarian, school board member and church president, returned home with her husband Nevin L’Amoreaux. Nevin is primarily responsible for all the milking cows and parlor and show string. With his contacts in the Registered and AI businesses, he keeps us up on the latest happenings. Their two daughters are Lindsay and Lauren. Our second daughter, Jill, and her husband Cory are valuable with their ability to fill in and do any job on the farm. Jill knows every cow. Cory, who can fix or build anything, is currently building a new silage truck. Jill and Cory’s children are Cora, Sydney, Tapanga and Wyatt. Our son Brian and his wife Liz are keeping up with five children: Emma, Haley, Meredith, Brice and Colleen. I think Liz was born to raise calves and children. Patience, long hours and a lot of love are needed for both jobs. Brian makes most of the breeding decisions, keeps records and does registration. He oversees dry cows, calving and calves up to bred heifers, and all ET work. Crops are son Michael’s primary responsibility. We currently own 973 acres and rent 500 acres. We can raise our own forage and sell cash grain. Mike and Shelley’s children are Anna and Will. Shelley has a degree in accounting and takes care of payroll, taxes and paying bills. Mike and his family live at our heifer facility about five miles from the dairy. Mike can also handle any job and takes care of scheduling employees.
by Brian Ramsey Paradise Valley continues to be home to the next generation. What is better than growing up on a dairy farm with your cousins close by? When thinking about what has contributed to our merchandising success, we are very fortunate to have the Bell Sears family. This family transmits milk, type and calving ease. We have kept most females from this family, which leads to success on the bull side. For breeding choices, we sort by pedigree from the top families and like to use bulls from VG87 two-year-olds, VG-88 three-year-olds and EX-90 four-yearolds. This combination usually gives us the milk, type and calving ease we prefer.

Genomics has impacted our breeding program, because more information is available faster. I think it is harder to hit the target when it moves every four months. I spend a lot of time on the Internet looking up new sires and looking at sales to see the sires of choice. When we pick a sire that has milk, type and calving ease, we think the productive life and health traits will be there generation after generation. We will always register our cows. Everyone who comes to the farm to buy a bull wants it registered. Registration adds value to a herd. What may be challenges for us is that our city of Louisville is growing, and the oil industry is getting closer. These could be good or bad.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this Nov-Dec News, which turned out to be another family-friendly and youthoriented Holiday issue. Despite the pressures of harvest, breeders came in with their ads. Please notice all our commercial advertising, something rather unique in a state breed publication, which allows us to hold down costs to everyone. Take time to mention to all our advertisers that you saw their ad in the Ohio Holstein News. Recent months have been busy, with three sales since August 25, which included printing catalogs and flyers, and the annual membership drive. The last of the District Show reports are in this issue, and we appreciate all who help with these shows, and especially those who send in the reports. One more activity this year is the Barn Meeting, with Don Bennink as speaker, and the Tag Sale at Springhill on December 15. The News Committee met in October to plan for the coming year, and the Show Committee will be meeting in December to make the All-Ohio and Junior AllOhio choices. Juniors have been meeting also, and the Annual Meeting and Convention Sale Committees are busy with plans. The Board meets four or more times a year for business and planning sessions. We rely on many volunteers to help with Holstein activities. According to Martha Jordan, a mental health professional in Ashland County, when volunteer coordinators talk about what they appreciate in individuals who willingly offer their time and talents to an organization, there are three descriptions that regularly surface. Initially, there is a passion that takes the form of supporting a cause or program and a strong belief that volunteering does make a difference. Then there is the quality of commitment to make a difference and to do whatever is needed to help that cause. Next is a positive attitude that displays a joyful spirit. Volunteers have enthusiasm and drive for whatever needs to be done. What motivates volunteers? The short answer may be that they want to do something that will better society and improve situations. There may also be a desire to feel useful, have new experiences, develop as a person and work with others. There is some scientific and medical documentation that volunteering can give a more optimistic outlook on life, a heightened sense of well-being, increased energy and a sense of connectedness with others. So, Holstein volunteers — too many to mention — THANK YOU for all you do for the Association. Esther’s Extras – continued on page 52

General Manager’s Views ———————————— by Don Alexander
I visited with Harriet Davis of Wales, United Kingdom, at the Ohio/New York booth at World Dairy Expo. photo by Karen Welch
What an incredible fall this has been with Quality Quest having another successful sale and the Ohio Multi-Breed Fall Sale completed and profitable. I would like to extend my gratitude and thanks to the consignors for the quality of cattle they offer, and to the buyers and the confidence they have in purchasing quality cattle from your Association-managed sales. I also need to thank our two co-chairs of the sale committee, Barb Lumley and Ken Janes, who give hours of their time for each sale. Also, Nancy Kemp, whose assistance in mailing flyers and catalogs is a huge help. Last, but not least, Pete Spike, who has taken over the design and information that goes into each catalog, and for the enormous amount of time he spends making sure the information is accurate and correct. It's the efforts of those I have mentioned and the countless names I have not mentioned that continue to keep our Association successful. On November the 4th, I had the opportunity to attend the District 3 Fall meeting hosted by the Donald Simpson family of Plainfield Farms at their new facility. They had a beautiful fall day and an attendance of about 50 people. A tour of new the facility, judging contest, pie contest and auction, and a pot luck meal were enjoyed by all. Plans are underway for our State Convention to be held in Sidney, Ohio, on March 8 and 9, 2013, located at the Sidney Inn, which will

be very economical, with a lot of room for the Holstein Association Winter Forum, Queen contest, a great area for the Juniors to meet and have fun, the Annual Meeting on Saturday and the opportunity for members to enjoy visiting with everyone. The Ohio Association, along with the Districts in the Sidney area, will have a Convention sale with approximately 70 head selling, and plans are to have an exciting sale. I will be working with the Buckeye Dairy Club making selections for the
Buckeye Classic Sale during their holiday break; be prepared to have one of the students from the club stop in looking for a great consignment for their sale March 29, 2013. The Ohio Holstein Association will also have a Spring Sale at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wooster, Ohio, on April 24, 2013. As you can see from this column, 2013 will have three great sales to get the new year off to a good start. The Board has discussed organiGeneral Manager – continued on page 52

It Was a Good Day for the Ohio Multi-Breed Fall Sale by Barb Lumley Take a crisp, bright, sunny November day; combine it with a barn full of outstanding registered consignments; add a large crowd of dairy enthusiasts; mix in a well-known auctioneer; sprinkle with a few ringmen, and you have the recipe for a successful Ohio Multi-Breed Fall Sale, held Saturday, November 17, 2012, at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, Ohio. The high-selling Holstein at $5,700 was Lot 62, FamilyPro Milly 158, a Very Good-86 Windy-Knoll-View Rubens Pro daughter, recently fresh and milking 95 pounds a day. She was the consignment of Richard and Judy Wolf, Creston, Ohio, and was purchased by Spring Walk Farms, William Wachtel and Family, Big Prairie, Ohio. Purchased by Alan Brown, New Bremen, Ohio, for $5,500 was Lot 8, Pine-Tree Freddie Wish-ET, consigned by Matthew Steiner, Rittman, Ohio. Sired by Badger-Bluff Fanny Freddie, she carried contract interest from numerous AI studs, was classified Very Good-85 and descended from seven generations of Excellent dams. The average was $2,597 on 63 live Holstein lots. Four Holstein embryo lots averaged $1,438. Five consignments sold from $4,100 to $4,600, and nine more sold over $3,000. The top-selling Ayrshire was Lot 8, Spring Run Blue Sky Dennie at $2,500. A two-year-old daughter of Hawksfield Blue Sky, she had recently calved, was consigned by Thomas Wolf, Shreve, Ohio, and was purchased by Norbert Farms. The Ayrshires averaged $1,307 on 15 lots. The Best of Quality Quest 2012 Sale Averages $2,340 by Barb Lumley As the registered Holstein cows entered the barn and walked to the holding pen where they would await their turn to parade the sale ring for owners Doug and Marty Dye and Family at The Best of Quality-Quest 2012 Sale, one could not help but notice the sound, well-attached udders, with so many of them high and wide in the rear. And just as the records in the sale catalog showed, they looked like milk! They would enter the sale ring exactly as they were cataloged, beginning with Lot 1, Quality-Quest FancifireET, classified Very Good-88, sired by Ked Outside Jeeves and the first of many members of the outstanding Firepower cow family. When the hammer fell at $4,400, she and two embryos became the property of Jay J. Hein, Celina, Ohio. The crowd would have to wait until Lot 15 for the sale topper at $5,100. She would be Quality-Quest Alex Rockette, classified Good Plus-84 and milking 88 pounds a day. Sired by Golden-Oaks St Alexander and from seven generations of Excellent dams that included “Roxy,” the Excellent-97 4E Queen of the Breed, she sold to Spring Walk Farm, William Wachtel and Family, Big Prairie, Ohio. For $4,700, Spring Walk Farm would also take home Quality-Quest Alexander Ann, Very Good-87, milking 97 pounds per day, also sired by Alexander and from a Very Good-88 Damion daughter. Lot 39 sold for $4,400 to Jake Hein, Celina, Ohio. Quality-Quest Gln Sunstruck, Very Good-85, was milking 124 pounds a day and sired by Glen-Valley BW Captain from a Very Good-87 Michael Storm Avalanche dam. Ten more animals sold for $3,000 and over. The volume buyer was Harold Leid, Greenwich, Ohio, who purchased eight head for $16,500. The sale average on 78 lots was $2,340. Cattle sold to Ohio and Pennsylvania. The sale was managed by Kiko Auctions, Canton, Ohio, assisted by the Ohio Holstein Association. Randall Kiko was the auctioneer with Ted Renner reading the pedigrees. Ringmen were Rusty Kiko, Brian Garrison, Steve Deam and Don Alexander.

INDIANA Mike JONES
From
National Director
HI, EVERYONE! I got the opportunity to spend a couple of days at Madison and visit with some friends and see a few good cows — ha, ha. What a beautiful group of cows and heifers. Amazing, the total dominance of Goldwyn in the top end of the cow classes. Atwood and Fever were also favorites of mine. On milk production in September, the 23 states that USDA reports monthly was 14.7 billion pounds, .5% below September a year ago. Milk price is still $4.50 per hundred below a year ago. On Association news, at the end of the third quarter, Holstein Complete has 280,600 animals in 1,836 herds,
30 | OHIO NEWS | 11-12/2012
11% higher than third quarter a year ago. Through September, 261,745 animals were registered, equal to last year. Forty percent of all animals registered are part of the Holstein Complete Program. The average registration fee is $8.04, which is $.58 less than last year. Transfers were 50,945 animals through the third quarter, which is 11% higher compared to last year. Through September, 165,815 animals in 3,589 herds were classified, 2% less than last year. I just got back from the Show Committee and JAC Committee meetings. We could have some progressive new changes, both in shows and also in Junior activities. If you ever get asked to participate in any of the committees that HAUSA is involved in, I encourage you to do so. It is a great opportunity to meet new people, express your opinion and help your organization. Well, we are deep in it trying to complete harvest, sad as it may be. It could be worse, and I am thankful to our Lord, who has provided us with a
living that keeps you with your family and Mother Nature. Have a safe harvest, and remember to be thankful for what the Lord has provided.
Indiana Jones signing off…

4-H Judging Team “NAILEs” It!
From left: Tanner Topp, Tessa Topp, Colton Harstine, Macy Conrad
submitted by Bonnie Ayars
COLUMBUS, OH — It is with great pleasure and pride that I can present the results of the Ohio 4-H Dairy Judging team at the recent North American International Dairy Judging Contests. With 22 youth teams present, our 4-H team claimed many honors when the trophies and ribbons were presented at the recognition breakfast on Monday, November 5. This contest usually represents a new beginning and a new team for the judging season. Members were Macy Conrad from Pickaway County, Colton Harstine from Tuscarawas County, and Tanner and Tessa Topp from Wayne County. Generally, the four individuals who participate at Louisville will be top contenders for a place on the Oho 4-H team that competes at the national contest during World Dairy Expo of the following year. Overall, the team placed fourth, coming in fifth in reasons. Considering the fact that two members had not competed in a contest of this caliber, it was an outstanding finish. As a team, they were recognized as third in Jerseys, fourth in Holsteins, seventh in Guernseys and eighth for Ayrshires and Brown Swiss. Tessa Topp was the sixth-high individual overall and earned third place for her sets of reasons. Tanner followed by being in the 14th placing overall, and Macy was 18th. Prior to the contest, the team had traveled to many workouts both in and out of Ohio. It is a pleasure to report their success on the tanbark, but a greater honor to coach the many personal victories that are afforded to these students who accept the challenge of making time to improve their skills of problem solving, decision making and public speaking.

4-H Judging Team and OSU Judging Team at World Dairy Expo submitted by Bonnie Ayars
COLUMBUS, OH — It requires dedication, endurance and commitment to compete as members of the Ohio 4-H Dairy Judging team. Four young ladies from around the state of Ohio just completed their 4-H careers with much success at the Pennsylvania All-American Contest and also the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held at Madison during World Dairy Expo. The young ladies were Laura Bond of Trumbull County, Emily Dudash of Champaign County, Hillary (Jackson) Hayman of Logan County and Meghan Thurston of Delaware County. Each has spent years judging locally and at the state contest.
course, we would also like to thank Ohio Holstein News for the space provided here to share our results! The Ohio State University Scarlet team also competed in fall contests held at the Pennsylvania All-American and World Dairy Expo. The team was composed of Marc Bolen of Fremont, Samantha Grizzell of Kingston and Keith Gibson of Springfield. Although Marc was quite comfortable as a contestant since he was on ATI’s secondplace team at Madison, these were the first contests for Samantha and Keith. With a finish in the top ten teams at the All-American, the team also finished in the middle of the National Dairy Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest at Madison during World Dairy Expo. However, Marc finished with his very best day and ended his judging career on a high note as the eleventh-high individual overall, receiving the “All-American” title. Another noteworthy accomplishment was his fifth-high score in placings, added to the fact that his breed placings included third-high in Red and White, ninth in Brown Swiss, sixth in Guernseys and fourteenth in Holsteins. Keith Gibson also claimed high honors as the third-high individual in Jerseys. Since he had never judged or presented reasons until four months ago, it was a personal victory for him. Again, we would like to thank the dairy industry, host farms, volunteers and the generous donors to our program. The experience is worthy of all your time and efforts and binds these students together as they pursue future careers.

Following are the remarkable results of their journey! At the All-American contest in Pennsylvania, they finished in first place. Excellent performance brought them this success, as all four young ladies were in the top ten individually. Emily was second overall (and second in reasons), Hillary fourth, Laura fifth and Meghan eighth. Also they finished in third as a team with their oral reasons. In the separate breeds, they were first in Guernseys, second in Ayrshires, fifth in Brown Swiss, second in Holsteins and third in Jerseys. More results can be located on the PA AllAmerican website. The National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest was one of the largest in recent years with 32 teams competing. The same young ladies ended up sixth-high team with Meghan in a Top 25 finish and Laura twelfth, receiving the distinctive title of “All-American.” Laura was also ninth in oral reasons. Hillary received recognition as third-high in Holsteins, and the team also garnered the third place award. In Guernseys, they were fifth, and Emily was seventh-high individual in Ayrshires. WDE also has all the results on their website. The trips to these contests also provide many farm visits for practices as well as tours of the Hoard’s Dairyman farm, Nasco and National Dairy Shrine. Many thanks for all the support from the dairy industry, the volunteers and parents for making this possible. Of

Ohio Holstein Women’s News The various women’s committees are in full swing preparing for the 93rd Ohio Holstein Convention to be held at the Sidney Inn and Conference Center, Sidney, Ohio, on March 9, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. Please mark your calendar, and make your reservations early. This issue of the News includes information on the Holstein Queen Contest, Women’s Scholarship and Woman of the Year Award. Please read the qualifications for each application and encourage those you know who would be great applicants to enter. NOTE: The scholarship can be awarded to either a young woman or a young man who is continuing their education in an agricultural field. I have enjoyed reading the Queen’s Corner in the News. Our queens have reported they learned so much about the dairy industry, met wonderful people, had fun traveling the state and developed their dairy judging skills by visiting so many fairs and district shows. It is so rewarding in many ways.
We are working toward the Fun Auction to be held at noon on March 9 to benefit the Women’s Scholarship Fund. We would like each district to participate by getting donated items or by getting money donated to purchase items. We would like to have a list of the items to be sold in the auction. By February 28, 2012, please furnish me with the following information: district name, donation item; item details, person in charge of providing the item for auction. Thank you in advance to both donors and buyers for your support and participation. If there is anything you would like to put on the agenda for the March 9th meeting, please email me or give me a call. I look forward to seeing you at the convention. How’s Your Dairy Cows’
Health? Local Testimonials: I’ve been using Oxy Blast for only 3 months and my SCC is the lowest it’s been in 25 years. I just had 65 cows bred in 2 months, out of a herd of 110. At herd check, 75% checked positive for pregnancy, What a difference! B.J. — Wayne County I am paying for the Oxy Blast by the extra bonus we are getting from the lower SCC. The milk production went up 3 lbs. Just better overall health. J.R. — Henry County We put Oxy Blast in to clean the iron out of the plugged water lines going to the free stall barns. The slime bacteria in the water lines and water fountains were cleaned out. Extra benefits: the milk production increased, the SCC went down, the conception rate improved, the herd health just got better. D.F. — Wayne County

The Queen’s Corner by Jacquelyn Sherry HELLO AGAIN! I hope everyone is enjoying this time of year. I love fall — all of the beautiful colors on the trees and the crisp, cool nights — and not to mention yummy desserts like pumpkin pie! I hope everyone enjoyed all of the shows this summer; I know I sure did! It was a With my sister Nicole great experience to travel all across Ohio and see a lot of great cows! I enjoyed being able to experience other county fairs, and I had a chance to make many new friends. I haven’t been to any shows lately, however I have had the opportunity to stay connected with the dairy and been able to see cows along the east coast, traveling with the Ohio State Dairy Judging Team. Over Labor Day weekend, we traveled to Maryland for what Bonnie calls “Boot Camp.” We judged 22 classes in two days and gave numerous sets of reasons. It was an exhausting weekend, but it helped me improve my skills. A few weeks later, we

• Simple, trouble-free design • Large capacity, yet compact and easy to handle • Single or double auger available • Various sizes available • Fluffy, consistent mixed feed
traveled to Massachusetts to judge at the Big E. We departed from Columbus, taking two days to stop at many farms along our way. We judged classes and gave reasons in the evenings at our hotel. The next day both college teams and the 4-H teams judged at Big E. Then we headed back to Harrisburg, where the 4-H team, including Hillary Jackson, Emily Dudash, Laura Bond and Megan Thurston, and the college team consisting of Marc Bolen, Samantha Grizell and Keith Gibson all took part in judging at the AllAmerican Dairy Show. Robin Alden, Jarred Smith, Tyler Schounour and I all judged ringside and gave reasons as well. Congratulations to the 4-H team for winning their division! In two weeks, we will be heading to Lousiville to compete at the North American International Livestock Expo. Thank you to all of the farms for allowing us to visit, and to Bonnie, Julie, Bernie, Tom and everyone else who made this experience possible! I would also like to encourage young women in the dairy industry to apply for next year’s queen. This year has truly been amazing, and I have had so much fun attending shows, seeing great cows and meeting awesome people. You have the best seats in the house, which helps to be able to evaluate all of the cattle that walk through the ring. I also will share a great experience I had at State Fair this year. After the futurity, I was going to change out of my dress, when two cute little girls who were probably four or five ran up and stopped right in front of me with their hands cupped over their mouths. They started shouting “Mommy look, Mommy look! It’s a princess!” So I asked them their names, and their mom took a picture of me with them. Although this made me laugh, I realized that I was a role model, and I didn’t even know them. It made me smile to know that I made their day, and it is something that I will remember forever! I encourage all of you young women out there to apply. The rules for the position can be found on the next page in this issue of the Ohio News. The application is online at www.ohioholstein.com. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them! I hope that everyone has a great holiday season with friends and family. I have so much to be thankful for, especially for my friends and family who have helped to support me, and of course, being a Buckeye! I know it is getting out of county fair season, but if there are any sales or other events coming up, please feel free to contact me at sherry.38@osu.edu, or give me a call at 937-459-8980. Happy Holidays!

You Can’t Take the Country Out of the Boy
VICTOR KAHL, District 8, submitted the photo at left from 1952 that shows him reading the Ohio Holstein News while serving with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Battalion, Able Company in Korea — proving that you can’t take the country out of the boy. Vic left the states in July of 1953, landed at Inchon and moved from Seoul to Panmunjom at the 38th Parallel. He was wounded November 21, 1952, and after the Armistice was signed, returned to the states with a Purple Heart and a fistful of other decorations to finish his duty at the Naval Gun Factory at Washington, D.C. Vic returned to Ashland County, where he and his wife Marcella, nee Tugend, established Kimber Lane Holsteins. He was an active member on the Ashland County Holstein Board and combined dairying with a long career as a school bus driver in the Hillsdale District. He continues his interest in Holsteins, watching his grandson Dex Rogers win Grand Champion at the Junior Show at the 2012 Ashland County Fair.

Looking ahead to the January-February issue, there are many reasons to advertise. The All-Ohio and Junior AllOhio calendar will be a part of this issue thanks to the sponsorship of COBA/Select Sires. You can double the impact of the award with an ad using the photo we already have for the calendar. A reminder to Junior All-Ohio entrants: we also want a headshot or small photo of the exhibitor. Districts 13 and 14 are hosting the Convention sale on March 8 and the annual meeting March 9 at Sidney, and we are planning for an emphasis on these districts. We need the ads for the Convention Sale in this issue and advance ads for the Buckeye Classic on March 29. Throughout 2013, we are interested in hearing from multigenerational farms that are still in active with Holsteins. Thank you to everyone for the consideration you have shown me this year, and I look forward to working with you in 2013. General Manager – continued from page 14
zing a bus trip for either World Dairy Expo or The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada, next fall. The New York Holstein Association has organized several bus trips over the years to the Royal, and I mention this in my column and would like your thoughts and interest on planning a bus trip to one or both of these events. Again this year, I had the opportunity to attend both, and I know Ohio had a group of members that had a great trip to the Royal. Our next Board meeting is scheduled for January 4, 2013; any feedback you would like to give your Director to pass on to the Board would give us an idea of the number of people interested in a bus trip this fall. I hope to see a great turnout for the Barn Meeting and Tag Sale at Springhill Holsteins on December 15. Events begin with a viewing of the cattle being offered by the Lang family, followed by lunch at the nearby church with guest speaker Don Bennink, managing partner/owner of North Florida Holsteins. Mr. Bennink is one of the most dynamic people in the in the industry today when it comes to health traits, genomics, IVF and large dairy operations. Have a Safe Holiday Season, Don. 52 | OHIO NEWS | 11-12/2012
