I knew that this place would be something special but it never crossed my mind that it would be the place that I miss the most in the world, the place that would bring me the most incredible people I’ve ever met, a place that could be so small but mean so much to me.” — Fernanda Salles, student of the English Language Programs

Ohio Northern University offers English support for nonnative-English speakers at all levels of ability through its English Language Programs (ELP). The primary purpose of ELP is to prepare students to pursue their degrees in an English-language setting. This preparation is delivered through two core programs:
The International Scholar Transition Program (ISTP) is designed for students with strong English skills who need extra support to meet the high academic standards of the University. It provides academic language study with courses in the student’s major with all credits applicable for graduation.
The Intensive English Program (IEP) serves students with lower competencies in English who need to master basic skills in using the language. The fivelevel program provides full-time language instruction designed to be completed in 5 academic terms or one calendar year.
The two programs are separate but related. Students in both programs benefit from ONU’s renowned small class sizes and one-on-one attention from faculty members. ISTP focuses on advanced-level English skills required for university coursework. The IEP focuses on the lower- and intermediatelevel English skills required for living in a university environment on an American campus. Students with iBT TOEFL scores below 50 study in the IEP. Students with iBT TOEFL scores between 50 and 78 study in the ISTP.
THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR TRANSITION PROGRAM The International Scholar Transition Program (ISTP) is for students who are academically qualified to join their major area of study at ONU but whose English proficiency is not high enough for a full schedule of academic courses. ISTP students take advanced academic English-language classes along with regular academic courses for credit in their major.
Qualified students enter the program for the first
academic year, focusing on improving their English proficiency in preparation for continued successful academic study. During that first year, ISTP students usually complete 12-15 credits in their degree program. Exiting the program early after one semester requires successful completion of all coursework plus a TOEFL score of 79 on the iBT or 550 on the ITP (Institutional TOEFL). Exiting the program after 2 semesters requires successful completion of all coursework plus a score of 62 on the iBT or 500 on the ITP (Institutional TOEFL).
Highlights of the International Scholar Transition Program
• ISTP students earn college credits that fulfill degree requirements while simultaneously improving their English skills. • ISTP courses focus on competence in academic listening, reading, speaking and vocabulary. • ISTP schedules include a college composition sequence that fulfills the University’s first-year English writing requirement. • ISTP students work with major academic advisors to plan an academic schedule leading to a degree. • ISTP classes carry academic credit that may be used as electives in some degree programs. (Check with the program advisor.)
THE INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM The Intensive English Program (IEP) is
intended for students who are not yet able to function freely in the English language. Students whose scores are lower than the ISTP requirements, or those who have not taken any English language study, may apply for and complete the IEP.
Initial placement in the IEP is determined by a placement test upon deposit and again upon the student’s arrival on campus. Students advance through the five levels of study by successfully completing courses at each level and maintaining a GPA of at least 2.2. The IEP usually can be completed in one full year of study, including a summer term. Students enroll in 10 to 12 credit hours per term (five or six courses) and are in class 20-24 hours per week. At the completion of Level 5, students admitted to an ONU degree program graduate into the International Scholar Transition Program (ISTP), and begin academic studies.
