Homecoming exhibit features ONU graduate Kyle Hotz Graphic novel illustrator Kyle Hotz, BFA ’93, of Bellbrook, Ohio, will be this year’s featured artist in the department of art and design’s Homecoming Exhibit and Lecture Series.

The show will highlight a number of panels from Hotz’s recent novel, The Creepy Tree, which includes original, preliminary sketches to completed color comprehensives.

The lecture will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in the Wilson Art Center. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. at the Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery. The exhibition runs from Oct. 17-31.

Hotz has worked as an illustrator and writer of comic books since 1991. His work has appeared in series published by Marvel Comics (Periscope Studios), DC Comics, Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics. He has completed work on Marvel’s Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man: The Osborn Journal, The Man-Thing and The Hood under Marvel’s MAX Comics imprint. Often referred to as the “master of macabre,” Hotz created Mosaic, his first written and illustrated graphic novel, in 1999 under Sirius. Other horror titles Hotz has worked on include Ghost Ride, Zombie, Criminal Macabre and Evil Ernie. In 2007 at DC, his work won a Young Adult Library Services Association Award (Great Graphic Novels for Teens) for Billy the Kid’s Old Timey Oddities.

Novelist and screenwriter Philip Nutman has high praise for Hotz’s work. “Like the cinematographers of Hollywood’s golden age, Hotz knows how to paint with light and shade, creating a chiaroscuro world worthy of Caravaggio. Add to this his eye for twisted detail and an ability to make the everyday appear strange and/or menacing, and I don’t think either Bosch or Goya would be disappointed. Alongside Kelley Jones, Kyle is unquestionably one of the finest artists of the macabre working in comics today.”

“When I went to Northern, the tuition was $90 a quarter until the last year,” recalls Neil Allen, BSEd ’53. “Then it went up to $150, and everyone got upset!”

This was Ohio Northern University in the late 50s, the ONU Allen attended as he worked his way toward an education degree in a department that, according to the 1952-53 ONU course catalog, strove to “to present in theory and practice approved and rational methods of instructions … and to offer such courses for the professional training of teachers as will broaden their horizon and advance them to higher planes of usefulness, ability and service.”

Things were physically different then, too.

“Taft Gym was the building furthest west, and everything else was fields,” Allen remembers.

“They had a dorm for the women, but not for the men. You either stayed in a private home or apartment or a fraternity house. Those were the only places you had.”

Fifteen years later, Dennis “Denny” Rectenwald, BSEd ’69, was also a fixture of an evolving Northern campus. “When I got there, Lima and Founders Hall were just being created. When I moved into Founders Hall, it was practically brand new.” Forty years ago, FALL 2008

Rectenwald’s education department promised to “aid … prospective teachers in helping themselves, children and youth identify and meet more effectively their physical, mental, social, personal and spiritual needs.”

When Jeffrey “Jeff ” McClellan, BS ’98, graduated, the majority of campus looked as it does now. “It was a quiet, peaceful place,” he remembers. In the 90s, McClellan was enrolled in a teacher education program that existed to “provide the prospective teacher with the general education, subject area concentration and professional education experiences that will enable the student to enter the profession of teaching with competency.”

The last half-century has seen much change.

Faculty members have come and gone. Facilities have been raised and then razed. New educational programs have been introduced. But, for the most part, the teacher education program of 1953 – and 1969 and 1998 – is quite similar to the program of 2008.

Today, ONU’s Center for Teacher Education (CTE) operates under the concept that “teaching is enabling.” Current program commitments are broken down into six primary goals. Of particular interest is goal number four: “The competent teacher candidate practices reflective thinking.”

That is, the CTE strives to prepare teachers who can reflect on their own learning and teaching and then use that knowledge to bring about positive change. This positive change might begin in the classroom, but it could soon expand to encompass entire schools and, later, entire districts.

The University’s original educational offering – that of training teachers – has changed over time.

Standards have tightened, and state requirements have increased. Despite all this, during the past half century, Ohio Northern University’s teacher education program has consistently prepared ambitious, overachieving graduates for rewarding careers.

Allen, Rectenwald and McClellan are perfect examples of this. From the start, each had immense drive and ambition. They accomplished much during early stages of their careers, moving above and beyond what was expected of them.

At age 26, Rectenwald became the youngest assistant principal at the largest Roman Catholic high school in Ohio. At age 28, McClellan was one of the youngest principals at a major high school in Ohio. While still a senior at Northern, Allen was substitute teaching at Lima Shawnee (in Lima, Ohio) using a temporary teaching certificate.

And it all began at Ohio Northern.

many as an up-and-comer, he taught science for five years at Lima Senior High School before being named principal of that institution’s emerging School of Multiple Intelligences.

“We took Lima Senior High School and transformed it into three small schools within one building. All the teachers were the same; the kids were the same. We just modified the structure and identified a specific approach to teaching that we were going to use,” he says.

The school was established using funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

When it was first transformed before the 2004-05 school year, Lima Senior High School was under “Academic Watch” by the Ohio Department of Education. Today, the school is in “Continuous Improvement,” which is the middle designation. “So, we’ve gone up on the grade card,” McClellan says. “Our graduation rate last year was 94 percent for my small school.

Our attendance has gone up every year, too.”

While principal of the School of Multiple Intelligences, McClellan also helped institute the MI Ready program (a college-credit program for ninth and tenth graders) with

Ohio Northern University has prepared teachers since the 19th century when the institution was known as the Northwest Ohio Normal School. Normal schools were created specifically to train high school graduates to be teachers.

While the goal is the same, requirements for teachers are much different than in 1871 or even 1971.

Today, Ohio requires most classroom teachers to specialize in a specific age group and, often, in the subject matter they choose to teach.

Dr. Tena Roepke, director of ONU’s Center for Teacher Education, associate professor of mathematics/education, explains that the former elementary education license for grades one through eight in Ohio has been replaced by a system that emphasizes more specialization.

Proud of this innovation, McClellan hopes to see further collaboration between high schools and universities. “There’s an opportunity to connect secondary education with K-12 education that really has potential,” he says. “It needs to be a seamless transition. Right now the two systems don’t necessarily talk very much.”

This fall, McClellan begins a new chapter in his administrative career as he becomes principal of an innovative public high school in Cleveland, Ohio: the Metropolitan Cleveland Consortium for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (MC2STEM).

This new public high school, which will be embedded in a different industry campus each year, is open to all students in the city schools and in the suburbs. The first year’s enrollment is comprised of 100 ninth-graders. The school has received support from a large number of local business and industry partners.

“There are two grade bands: early childhood, which is pre-kindergarten through grade three, and middle childhood, which is grades four through nine. The middle childhood teachers are expected to concentrate in two subject areas chosen from math, social studies, language arts and science.”

She goes on to add, “There are also the AYA licensure programs, which stands for Adolescent/Young Adult licensure. It’s what we used to call secondary licenses.” For these teachers of grades seven through 12, the requirements are even more specialized. “To have that level of a license in Ohio,” Roepke says, “you have to have a major in the content you want to teach. So, if someone wants to teach AYA mathematics, at Ohio Northern they will major in the math department.

“They’re mathematics majors, yet they’re also taking the teacher education requirements, which is almost the equivalent of another major. They’re not called double majors, but, in terms of course requirements, they are.”

There are also multi-age programs for licenses to teach pre-kindergarten through grade 12. These are in art, visual arts, music, health physical education and, believe it or not, foreign languages.

This emphasis on specialization is one reason ONU’s Center for Teacher Education has 18 approved teacher-licensure programs.

The programs enroll about 200 students, about 70 of whom are “education majors” seeking early- or middle-childhood licensure.

At the end of their college preparation, teacher candidates take national exams (Praxis I and Praxis II). These assessment tests are required for licensure in most states, and Roepke adds, “Ohio has one of the highest score requirements in the country.”

Because of that, and the fact that Ohio produces more teachers than the state has jobs, ONU graduates with an Ohio teacher’s license can find career opportunities across the country. Last year’s graduates teach not only in Ohio, but also in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Maryland and New York. Statistics indicate 100 percent of 2007 graduates have found teaching jobs, or gone on to additional education.

This year’s Education Expo brought 240 recruiters from 140 school districts to campus and included representatives from schools in Alaska and Hawaii and many states in between.

“The engineering community in Cleveland and the colleges in the area are supporting the curriculum. They’re supporting the internships.

Kids are going to get college credit for coursework,” McClellan says.

Looking back, McClellan seems satisfied thus far with his career choices. “I finally found where my values line up with what I’m doing. It’s so easy for me to do what I’m doing. It doesn’t even feel like work.”

In 1968, Allen became superintendent of Ada Exempted Village Schools. He left in 1973 to become superintendent of Upper Sandusky Exempted Village Schools, only to return to Ada as superintendent in 1977.

“Neil is the only person that I have ever heard of who left a school district as superintendent, went to another school district as superintendent, and then the first disctrict actually asked him to come back,” says Rectenwald of Allen’s unusual career moves. “They usually run you out of town and never want to see you again. They don’t even forward your mail!”

Allen officially retired in 1983, although his post-retirement résumé is dotted with stints as “interim treasurer” and “interim superintendent” for a number of districts in Ohio. Through the years, Allen has acted as a fiscal consultant, helping financially troubled school districts work their way out of debt. His expertise has carried him throughout Ohio, with stops in Fremont, Marion, Port Clinton and Cleveland, among others. Before long,

Allen followed a similar career path, albeit 50 years earlier. Like McClellan, Allen spent time in the classroom (from 1955-64) before moving into administrative roles. His career began in 1955 as a teacher and coach at Hawthorne Junior High School in Lorain, Ohio, and then Shawnee Schools in Lima, Ohio.

Leadership roles followed. “There were people along the way who encouraged me to head into administration,” Allen recalls. “At Shawnee, I became an assistant junior high principal and then a junior high principal.”

Gretchen Deeg: Teaching, But Not in The Classroom Education is not confined to a classroom, and an educator’s skills can find a home in many career paths.

For Gretchen Deeg, BS ’08, from Carroll, Ohio, that path is leading to an ecclesiastical calling. After a summer of working with fourth and fifth graders in day care, she will be entering graduate school at Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pa. Although Deeg does not see herself in a traditional classroom, she says, “My experiences at ONU helped prepare me academically, mentally and spiritually. I am not following the traditional route after studying math education at ONU. I have been planning to go to seminary for the past few years and, thus, will be using my teaching preparation in a different way than my fellow education classmates.

My long-term goal is to go into parish ministry, a field that, in reality, is based on teaching.

“I believe that my education classes have given me a strong base from which I can work to become a good teacher in any field, including religion. My math classes have taught me how to think in a more

organized and logical manner. The chapel program at ONU helped me to discover my passion, and it also gave me confidence in my gifts by providing me with work experiences through chapel staff.”

Not surprisingly, while at ONU, Deeg chose a nontraditional way to complete her studies, doing her student teaching not in Northwest Ohio but at a U.S. military base in Germany.

“Student teaching in Germany did not change my career goals; however, it has greatly impacted me personally,” she says. “I noticed how important it was that the families created a strong and welcoming community for everyone who lived on the base for whatever reason, be it that they were military families, support staff or student teachers. This was an important reminder because it’s something that all of us should consider in any field.

It taught me that, in order to be a good teacher, one must take the time and expend the effort needed to create an environment that is supportive and stable. Because life is constantly changing, the students and families need a place where they can belong in an everchanging world.”

It’s part of the teacher’s greatest challenge: “Finding ways to engage students and get them intrinsically excited about lifelong learning,” Deeg says.

She adds, “I loved teaching in Germany and, since returning to the States, I have seriously considered applying to teach abroad.

However, in addition to increasing my love of teaching, the experience has reinforced my desire to attend seminary. So my career goals have remained unchanged.”

Allen’s reputation as an emergency resource for saving a district from bankruptcy became known throughout the state.

“I had boards of education in the state of Ohio say to me, ‘If we see you around, we know we’ve got financial problems,’” Allen says with a laugh.

“He’s called the grim reaper in the state of Ohio. When Neil shows up, you’re broke,” Rectenwald jokes.

Rectenwald has developed a reputation of his own; he’s brought in to pull things together, to take the pieces of battered and broken school districts and make them whole. Often acting as interim superintendent, he crafts strategic plans for setting districts straight before handing over the reins to a permanent hire. He then moves on.

He found recent success in the Perkins School District in Sandusky, Ohio. Beginning in mid-2007, Rectenwald served as interim

superintendent at Perkins for eight months, using his expertise, skills and experience to rescue the district from the negative effects of a lengthy

Julie R. Herendeen, BA ’04, Makes a Difference in the Inner City Jere Baxter Middle School is an inner-city school dealing with all the challenges of urban poverty. It is one of 30 middle schools in the Metro Nashville Public School district, and it is where Julie R. Herendeen, BA ’04, has chosen to make a difference.

“My day-to-day stories make me laugh in an ‘I can’t believe I work somewhere where this happens’ kind of way,” she says. “My stories are of inner-city kids who alternately delight me and break my heart on a daily basis.”

Still, in four years of teaching eighth grade language arts, reading and physical science, she has seen real success.

“It is an understatement to say that Jere Baxter is a struggling school,” she says. “Our 2007-08 NCLB (No Child Left Behind) status was Restructuring 1. Despite that, the kids in my classroom have had a lot of success.” Over the last several years they have surpassed the NCLB test requirements.

Last year, she taught physical science, a class eighth graders can take for high school credit.

“One hundred percent of my students passed the end-of-course exam that allows them to receive their credit, and all but five of them tested advanced,” Herendeen reports.

This summer, she presented a professionaldevelopment workshop for the district, teaching middle-school language-arts teachers how to use graphic organizers and multiple learning styles in writing instruction.

It is all part of a larger professional plan, Herendeen explains. “Currently, I am working

teacher’s strike. Working with teachers, parents, students and board members, Rectenwald created a plan to get a muchneeded school levy passed.

And with the help of Allen, it worked.

“Until I brought Neil in, the teachers in Perkins had no trust in the treasurer or the numbers,” Rectenwald says. Allen spent a few days in public session with the school board so that the union could understand where the district stood financially.

“They spent $300,000 on negotiations and legal fees before I got there, and it ended up in a strike. After I got there, we spent a total of $5,000 on negotiations. I didn’t even

on my master’s degree in administration and supervision at Tennessee State University and hope in the next 10 years to work as a principal in an urban school, developing even more of my ‘street cred,’ so when I go on to pursue a doctorate, I can, in good conscience, teach urban education at the university level.”

The challenges of being an educator in an urban setting can be daunting. “Especially in schools where urban poverty is the norm, students often come to middle school already many years behind, disenchanted with the system that has failed so many people they know, and fatalistic about the doors schooling can open for them,” Herendeen says.

“The greatest challenge we have is a combination of meeting students where they are, finding what interests and motivates them, and holding them to high standards of achievement, regardless of what they have experienced previously. Middle school is a crucial time in a child’s life: It is during these years that they are most malleable. When he or she gets to high school, decisions about the importance of school have been made; it is our charge to make them fall in love with education and its possibilities before they get there.”

Although studying for her degree at ONU may have been far from the urban setting, Herendeen believes she was well prepared.

call the attorneys until it was over. It all started with Neil.”

Rectenwald began his own career teaching and coaching at Clyde High School in Clyde, Ohio. After two years in Clyde, he became dean of students at Cardinal Stritch High School in Oregon, Ohio, before advancing to the role of assistant principal at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio. “I was there for two years and St. Mary’s in Sandusky called and said they had a principal’s opening. They hired me there, and the rest is kind of history. I just kept climbing the ladder,” he says.

Later in his career with Port Clinton City Schools, Rectenwald became the first superintendent in Ohio to convince the teachers in a district to return a portion of their salaries for the betterment of the schools. “We got into some heated discussions about it, but they ultimately gave it back,” he says. “The State Department of Education said that has never happened in Ohio. If I would have known that, I would have been afraid to ask!”

“The pedagogical expertise of professors like Dr. Diana Garver, Dr. Tena Roepke and Mrs. Marta McCullough made my first year doable. Writing lesson plans that were pedagogically sound and engaging to students was easy since I had so much practice and feedback during my years at ONU. The wisdom imparted by Dr. John Berg about professionalism and classroom management was priceless,” she says.

But that was just part of her ONU experience. “The leadership skills, responsibility and empathy I learned through my involvement with Habitat for Humanity, SPC, Mortar Board, the Honors Program, Res Life, etc., were also invaluable,” Herendeen says.

It’s preparation she would recommend to aspiring teachers. “My experiences – educationally and socially – at ONU are indelible and definitive pieces of the person I have become,” she says. “The more I’m in the real world, I realize how utopian and idyllic the Northern experience was. Without reservation, I would recommend ONU to a prospective student of education or any other major. The rigor of the classes, the hundreds of hours of field experience, the expertise and approachability of the professors and the opportunity for involvement are unparalleled.”

It began at Northern

The foundations for these future successes were established at Ohio Northern. The three alumni each had different reasons for attending ONU, and, while in Ada, none had any plans to venture into educational administration.

“I wanted to be an engineer,” McClellan says. “And I was all set to go to another school, but we came to visit ONU, and I loved it here. It was a quiet, peaceful place. I met the dean of the engineering college. During all my trips to other colleges, I never met the dean at all. Northern was just a different kind of place.”

Rectenwald says, “I didn’t have a clue about college. I had an aunt who was the only educated person in our family that had a college degree.

She said, ‘There’s this great little private school in Ada, Ohio, that you ought to go to.’ She said, ‘Here’s an application; fill it out.’ And that’s how I got here.”

Allen had similar influence from a family member. “My mother went to Ohio Northern. I graduated from Delphos Jefferson High School, about 30 miles away. So it was an easy decision.”

Allen found immediate inspiration and support from legendary ONU coaches Clyde Lamb and Marv English, BSEd ’41, H of F ’73, Hon. D. ’96. “Probably the first people I met at Ohio Northern were Clyde Lamb and Marv English. They both encouraged me to go into education when I registered. So, I became a trainer and a manager for four years at Ohio Northern.”

“There were certain people along the way who kind of convinced you that you could do it. They had enough faith in you,” Rectenwald adds.

McClellan, too, experienced a change of heart regarding his originally intended major.

He says, “Engineering just wasn’t the right fit for me. I thought things over, though. My mom taught science; my dad’s in education. All my paid experiences in high school involved tutoring kids and working at the zoo. I was always working with kids in the science areas, so I changed my major to biology. And I picked up secondary education when I changed.”

Persistence Pays Off for Early-Childhood Educator Katie (Skapik) Shaffer, BA ’05, loves being in the classroom. With a degree in early-childhood education, and a wish to teach in Ohio, it required persistence, but now her tenacity is paying off. …continued from page 7 While in Kenya, Shaffer toured village schools and worked with kindergarten students. “They didn’t know any English, so it was a wonderful challenge for me. It was amazing!” The experience has prompted her to look into ONU’s Partnership South Africa. “I told Dr. Sandra Crosser that if they go back to South Africa, I want to go, too,” she says.

Back in her own classroom at Searfoss Elementary in Johnstown, Ohio, she finds her greatest challenge in the student’s wide range of abilities. “Of course, classroom management is always being challenged. I think I did really well this year. I was very proud of myself, but it may have been the group of kids I had. The next year you start fresh,” she says.

And, she believes, new teachers are most willing to keep learning and changing.

It’s part of what she learned at ONU, she explains. “Northern is wonderful about getting you out in the field right away. You are doing field experience your freshman year, so you know right away if the classroom is for you or not.”

Shaffer started at ONU’s Child Development Center her first quarter. “That was wonderful. In many programs, you don’t actually get into a classroom until your second or third year. It’s not just theory and general education classes at Northern.”

She adds, “I loved how the college classes were small so we had our own special early-childhood group, and we got really comfortable with each other. We’re still really close.”

Her advice for recent graduates is, “Don’t give up. Being a substitute teacher is a wonderful experience, especially if you’re staying in Ohio. If you don’t get a job, don’t get discouraged. Do whatever you can to teach. I didn’t get a job, so I started subbing and started working on my master’s. That turned out to be amazing for me.

Keep passionate about it and learn from others and don’t be afraid to go back to school, because what I learned in 2005 has changed already.

“It’s so important to keep going and learn some more. Keep your options open and get in the classroom as much as possible, even if you don’t get a job right away,” she says.

The meaning of Northern

Looking back on successful careers, Rectenwald, Allen and McClellan each recognize the impact made by their Ohio Northern experiences. More specifically, they praise Northern’s people: faculty members who pushed them toward specific career paths and, ultimately, proved to be life-changing influences.

McClellan says, “When I was at ONU, Dr. Carl Hoagstrom helped me become confident.

The University’s small size was really critical for me because I would have easily gotten lost. I wasn’t that focused, but people like Dr. Hoagstrom wouldn’t let me fall through the cracks.”

“Ohio Northern didn’t stop supporting me when I graduated,” McClellan continues. “In fact, I’ve benefited as much after I graduated as I did before I graduated.”

“When I went back to Northern years later, I still knew people that were there, and they knew me,” Rectenwald says. “I remember having lunch in McIntosh Center with [then University President] DeBow Freed, Hon. D. ’99, and he knew who I was, and he knew my wife Linda’s name. She was so impressed that the president of the college would, number one, just sit down and have lunch with us, and second, he remembered her name. She was just absolutely blown away.”

“The thing about going to Northern was the fact that you had the opportunity to know everybody pretty well on campus,” Allen adds.

“At Northern, you could sit down with the faculty, like we did with Dean Larry Archer, BSCE ’47, H of F ’88, every morning. You could sit down and feel relaxed talking to your faculty members.”

Perhaps Rectenwald sums it up best when he describes the type of student attracted to ONU: young men and women whose potential can be seen just below the surface, if you only know where to look. “Those students got to Northern, and Northern helped to spur some things on.

And their whole life changed,” Rectenwald says.

“Northern was willing to give them a shot.”

The state of education

For as much change and progress that Allen, Rectenwald and McClellan have brought to the educational system in Ohio, they all see room for improvement.

“Anybody who thinks that ‘bigger is better’ really doesn’t understand education,” Rectenwald says. “The movement now in education is to take larger districts and divide them up. Because what ultimately happens with big districts is you lose control. Those big schools just get buried, and accountability is nil.”

McClellan adds, “We have our work cut out for us. Traditional schooling just doesn’t cut

it anymore. I think a positive thing is that people are starting to recognize this, and the state of Ohio has been able to get the money to do some unique things with education.”

“As far as the kids go, they need to be heard,” McClellan continues. “They need to be at the table. They’re the leaders of the future. They’re the people who are going to lead this country. We need to make sure that they’re provided with the right kind of an education so they can do that.”

This “right kind of education” is being taught at Ohio Northern’s Center for Teacher Education, and has been for years. It’s gone by different names, and it’s been wrapped in different descriptions, but the essential concept has been constant: teaching is enabling. And Northern produces enabling teachers with the skills and knowledge to influence a lifetime of students.

TundraToday Ruble Named Vice President of Finance

Dr. Robert W. Ruble is Ohio Northern University’s new vice president for financial affairs.

Ruble has 25 years of experience in public universities and state-level higher education finance.

Ruble replaces John Green, who had been with the University since 1993 and retired at the end of the academic year.

ONU President Dr. Kendall L. Baker said, “The University welcomes Dr. Ruble to ONU. He brings a tremendous amount of experience that will be beneficial to the continued growth and development of our institution.”

Ruble has served in numerous higher education capacities, beginning in 1986 when he served as associate commissioner for facilities and financial affairs for the Indiana Commission for Higher Education in Indianapolis.

In 2000, Ruble was named vice president for business affairs and treasurer for the University of Southern Indiana. He also taught Engineering Economics Analysis and Analytical Techniques for Economic Evaluation at the Potts College of Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Indiana.

Since 2005, Ruble has worked at the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation in Nashville.

Ruble earned his bachelor’s degree (1973) and master’s degree (1976) in industrial engineering from Purdue University. In 1980, he earned his Ph.D. in higher educational administration from Illinois State University.

Tree Dedicated in Honor of ONU’s First Lady

ONU First Lady Toby Baker, BFA ’06, has been honored with a tree and dedication plaque just outside the ONU art building.

At a ceremony, Robert C. Smith, BSBA ’75, chairman of the ONU Board of Trustees, made the official presentation.

The plaque reads: Dedicated to First Lady Toby Baker From ONU Board of Trustees February 8, 2008 “In appreciation of her dedicated service to make a difference in the lives of the students at Ohio Northern University.”

Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs Karla M. Geise, BSBA ’07, is ONU’s new assistant director of alumni affairs. A graduate of Fort Loramie High School, she received her bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from Ohio Northern in May 2007.

Before returning to ONU, she was an aftermarket support representative for Crown Equipment Corporation in New Bremen, Ohio.

While at Northern, she was a Bear Ambassador, a member of the ONU Marketing Committee, President’s Club member and a Residence Life desk worker. She has also served as an ONU Alumni Board member.

She joins Director of Alumni Affairs Ann E. Donnelly, BA ’99, Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs Danielle (Verone) Murray, BA ’01, and Senior Administrative Assistant Joyce Dunham as a full-time member of the office of Alumni Affairs.

Construction Brings Change to Campus

Two major construction projects, The Inn at Ohio Northern University and the Mathile Center for the Natural Sciences, are on schedule as they head for openings this year and next.

The Inn is scheduled to be completed in October and ready to receive guests The Inn at Ohio Northern University The Mathile Center for Homecoming.

The Mathile Center, a three-story addition to the science complex, is scheduled for completion in April 2009. Currently, the structural steel is in place, the roof is on and interior work beginning.

Another construction project, the Business Services Building, located on Union Street next to the Child Development Center, is now complete. Security, Business Services and Printing Services are now housed in the new facility.

Renovation is underway in the basement of Hill Building, which had been home to Printing Services. The offices of the psychology and sociology faculty will be relocating to renovated space on the south side of the lower floor. The north side will include a telephone/conference room. Eventually, the first floor of Hill will include a new classroom and updated restrooms.

The Hill Annex, which had housed Business Services and the Security offices, has been demolished.

Renovation also is underway at 115 W. Lima Avenue, the former president’s home. This will become ONU’s Alumni House and will be ready for visitors during Homecoming Weekend.

Northern on Main, ONU’s coffee shop, also underwent a summer makeover and is open with an enhanced menu.

In the law building, library renovations have created the Hanson Reading Room, honoring the late Eugene N. Hanson, Hon. D. ’86, who served as dean of the College of Law from 1958 to 1973.

Thomas Hunt to Head Music Department

Thomas A. Hunt, Ph.D., is Ohio Northern University’s new department chair for the department of music.

He received a bachelor of music from Oberlin Conservatory and a master of music and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.

Before coming to Ohio Northern, he served as chairman of the Waldorf College Music Department in Forest City, Iowa, and director of the School of Music at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill.

In addition to his academic work, Hunt is an accomplished international and domestic orchestral and chamber musician, an experienced horn instructor and director of musical ensembles.

He founded and developed Minstrel Music, a private music school in Gainesville, Fla., and Hunt Horn Studio in the suburbs of Chicago.

He is a member of the College Band Director’s National Association, Iowa Bandmasters Association, Music Educators National Conference and the International Horn Society.

Commencements Celebrate Achievement

Ohio Northern conferred nearly 600 undergraduate degrees and 102 law degrees in May commencement ceremonies.

On May 11, former U.S. Senator from Ohio R. Michael DeWine, JD ’72, Hon. D. ’95, addressed the graduating class of the Pettit College of Law. His daughter, Alice DeWine, JD ’08, was among the graduates.

The class included the second group of eight international lawyers to complete the LLM program in Democratic Governance and the Rule of Law. Also in the class were father and son graduates Thomas L. McLelland and Ryan T. McLelland, who plan to return to Salt Lake City, Utah, to begin their law practice.

Brigadier General David P. Carey, JD ’77, Hon. D. ’08, USA (Ret.) was awarded an honorary degree. He currently is the executive director of American Inns of Court Foundation.

Undergraduate commencement on May 18 saw honorary degrees presented to Dr. Metta Lou Henderson, Hon. D. ’08, and Dr. Bruce Burton, Hon. D. ’08.

Henderson, who received an honorary doctorate of pharmacy, taught pharmacy at ONU beginning in 1978.

She also served as assistant to the vice president of academic affairs from 1980 to 1984. In 1993, she became interim chairman of the department of pharmacy practice and served as chairman from 1994 to 1995.

Burton, who received an honorary doctorate of engineering, came to ONU in 1958 as a professor of mechanical engineering and served as dean of the T.J. Smull College of Engineering from 1985 to 1994. He continued to teach until his retirement in 1999. He has served as ONU’s coordinator of international admissions since 1999.

Guest speaker for the undergraduate ceremonies was Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn L. Stratton.

In a special presentation, Zeeke, the one-year-old golden retriever whose service-dog training served as an honors capstone project for J.J. Coate, BS ’08, was awarded his own diploma in “canine companionship.” While Coate is going on to The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Zeeke will be involved in an additional six- to nine-month training program with Canine Companions for Independence Dr. Metta Lou Henderson, Hon.D. ’08. before beginning work.

Faces from the Field Faces from the Field is designed to acknowledge some of the unsung heroes of Ohio Northern University’s athletic teams. These young men and women contribute greatly to their teams’ successes, but often times are not given the “All-Star” credit they deserve.

Baseball Drew Wieland Wieland, a senior pitcher from Bryan, Ohio, was a four-year letterman for the Polar Bears.

This season, Wieland earned All-OAC honors, going 5-5 with a 3.35 ERA and a team-best 81 strikeouts in his first season as a starter. Wieland switched to pitcher as a junior after starting 41 games in the outfield as a freshman and sophomore, posting a 6-6 record with a 3.83 ERA.

Men’s Golf Wes Immler Immler, a senior from Lorain, Ohio, earned Academic All-OAC and Academic All-District honors in 2007-08. He won Medalist honors at the ONU Tri-Match and finished third at the Defiance Fall Invitational to earn a spot on the AllTournament Team. He ended his career with an 80.61 scoring average and posted 30 career rounds in the 70s.

Softball Abby Majoy Majoy, a senior catcher from Huron, Ohio, is a four-year letter winner for the Polar Bears. A two-year starter behind the plate, Majoy was named a Scholar All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Women’s Golf Amy Gillen Gillen, a senior from Troy, Ohio, is a four-year letter winner and earned Scholar All-America honors last spring.

She has a career average of 92.30, which ranks among the top 10 all-time at ONU. This season, she averaged 89.5 strokes in 15 rounds and helped ONU to a second-place finish in the OAC and a national ranking as high as No. 16.

Men’s Tennis Todd Anderson Anderson, a senior from Madison, Ohio, is a four-year letterman for the two-time defending OAC Champion men’s tennis team. He finished his career with an impressive 20-7 record in OAC regular season play. In his four seasons, he was 3121 in singles, 31-25 in doubles and 62-46 overall.

Women’s Tennis Betsy Brichler Brichler, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, returned to the women’s tennis team after a two-year layoff and posted a 14-8 record at No. 2 doubles. A two-year letter winner, she was 18-8 in doubles, 7-9 in singles and 2517 overall in her career.

Men’s Track Robert Leslie Leslie, a senior from Wauseon, Ohio, competed at the OAC Championships in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run. Leslie was a threeyear letterman in track and a two-year letterman in cross country.

Women’s Track Courtney Stephenson Stephenson, a senior from Camden, Ohio, is a four-year letter winner in track and field as a thrower. Stephenson competed in the shot put, the discus, the hammer throw and the 20-pound weight throw last season. She ranked 11th on the squad, earning 20 team points during the outdoor season this spring.

Midlam Enjoys Stellar Season with Green Bay Blizzard of AF2

For former Ohio Northern football standout Rusty Midlam, BS ’07, football has always been about fun, rather than business.

These days, Midlam is trying to change that.

The Mount Orab, Ohio, native is currently in his second year playing in the Arena Football 2 (AF2) league, a minor-league system to the bigger, more lucrative Arena Football League.

Midlam is in his first season with the Green Bay Blizzard, where he anchors the best defense in AF2 from his safety position. In 2007, Midlam led the Louisville Fire in tackles while starting every game at safety.

“I’m having a great time,” Midlam said.

“Arena Football is a blast, and, hopefully, AF2 will be a stepping stone to the Arena Football League. We don’t get paid much in AF2, but you can make a very good living in the big league.

Plus, many guys go from Arena Football to the NFL, so that’s always in the back of your mind.”

Midlam made the move from Louisville to Green Bay during the offseason to improve his

chances of joining the arena league and getting the much bigger paycheck.

“Last year, all three of Green Bay’s defensive backs made the jump to the arena league,” Midlam said. “I came here because the coaches do a great job of teaching the game and getting players ready for the jump. I had a great time at Louisville, but Green Bay is a much better fit for me.”

He led the Louisville Fire in tackles in 2007 with 93 tackles to go with his four interceptions in 18 games. He also had an AF2 rookie-record 11 tackles in one game against the Quad City Steamwheelers.

The Blizzard finished the 2008 regular season with an 11-4 record and made the AF2 playoffs.

Midlam finished the regular season with a teambest 12 interceptions, a team-best 21 passes broken up and 69 tackles.

Midlam credits his four-year career at Ohio Northern, where he was a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and earned AllAmerica honors as a senior.

“The speed of the game is a bit quicker, but the overall talent is not too far off of that in the OAC,” Midlam said. “Good football is good football, and the OAC is good football. My experience at ONU prepared me to play at the next level. It took me a few games to adjust to the speed, but the game has slowed down for me just fine.”

Polar Bears in the Pros

Midlam joins three other Polar Bears in the professional football ranks in 2008.

Jason Trusnik, BA ’07, is on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list with the New York Jets of the National Football League. He may miss the entire 2008 season with a broken foot he suffered late in the 2007 season on the road against the Tennessee Titans.

Jamal Robertson is with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League this season. The five-year NFL veteran ran 34 times for 104 yards and a TD and caught 11 passes for 121 yards and a TD through the first six games of the Argonauts’ 18-game schedule.

J.R. Cipra, BA ’01 completed another standout season kicking for the Erie River Rats of the American Indoor Football Association.

Cipra was named to the AIFA Eastern Conference All-Star Team and was one of the most prolific special teams performers in the

league. He was among the league leaders in just about every kicking category, including PAT percentage (64 of 71 for 90 percent), field goals made per game (1.4), field goal percentage (19 of 46 for 41 percent), total points scored (140) and kickoffs through the uprights (19 “unos”).

Ewald on Team USA Coaching Staff at Paralympic Games in Beijing, China As the focus of the world shifted to Beijing, China, for the Olympic Games in August, Ohio Northern University head swimming and diving coach Peggy Ewald was in the Orient for another competition.

Ewald was in Beijing for the Paralympic Games, which ran Sept. 6-17, as a member of the US Paralympic Swimming Team coaching staff.

She has been a part of the US Paralympic coaching staff since 2007 and has been the ONU swimming and diving coach since 2005, winning five OAC team titles, including four men’s crowns in succession.

The US Paralympic team roster features two individuals that have been under Ewald’s tutelage locally.

Ewald is the designated head coach for both Beth Kolbe and April Curly, who work with Ewald year-round.

Kolbe is a recent Harvard graduate and will enroll in the Stanford Law School after the Games.

Curly also is assisted by Wilmington’s head coach Tripp Breen.

ONU Men, Women Set OAC Record

by Sweeping OAC All-Sports trophies

The Ohio Northern University men’s and women’s teams swept the Ohio Athletic Conference All-Sports trophies for the second consecutive year.

Ohio Northern is the first school in OAC history to sweep the two titles in back-to-back years and is only the second school in the history of the OAC to win both the men’s and women’s titles in the same year.

The Polar Bears won their third consecutive Men’s All-Sports title and their fifth overall on the strength of championships in swimming and diving, indoor track and field, cross country and tennis.

Ten of ONU’s 11 men’s sports posted upperdivision finishes in the 10-team OAC, and all 11 finished in sixth place or higher.

Ohio Northern amassed an impressive 83 points out of a possible 101 points to easily outdistance second-place Mount Union and Heidelberg at 70.50 points.

ONU also won the Men’s All-Sports trophy in 1999-2000 and 1994-95.

The Lady Polar Bears won their second consecutive title and their third overall by scoring 79.75 points out of a possible 94 points.

Baldwin-Wallace was second with 72.75 points, and Otterbein was third with 64.75 points.

Ohio Northern won the OAC title in volleyball and women’s soccer and had upper-division finishes in all of the 10 women’s sports, with no sport finishing lower than fourth.

The Lady Polar Bears also won the 1996-97 All-Sports trophy.

The Men’s All-Sports trophy has been awarded every year since 1960-61, and the Women’s AllSports trophy has been awarded annually since the 1984-85 athletic season.

Points are awarded in the All-Sports Standings based on OAC finishes in each sport.

The championship team in each sport receives the number of points corresponding to the number of schools that sponsor teams in that sport.

The second-place team receives one less point and so on, down to one point for the last place team that competes. In the case of a tie in the standings, the AllSports trophy points are shared evenly.

2008 Spring Sports Update Baseball (18-22, 9-9 OAC)

The Ohio Northern baseball team finished the season 18-22 overall with a 9-9 record and a sixth-place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference under third-year head coach Justin Bergman.

The conference record marks the first time that the Polar Bears finished at least .500 in the conference since the 2002 season.

Senior pitchers Mark Sankovich, of Chesterland, Ohio, and Drew Wieland, of Bryan, Ohio, led the Polar Bears with records of 8-3 and 5-5, respectively.

Sankovich was named Rawlings/ABCA First Team All-Mid East Region and First Team All-OAC, while Wieland was selected Second Team All-OAC.

Leading the way offensively for Northern was sophomore Honorable Mention All-OAC honoree Drew Robinson, of Columbus, Ohio.

The first baseman ranked first on the team with a .372 batting average, 12 doubles, 29 RBI and six home runs.

Sophomore Greg Gibbons, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, was second on the team with a .338 batting average and led the team with 28 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.

Men’s Golf (53-41-3)

Third-year head coach Anthony Gholson guided the Ohio Northern men’s golf team to a third-place finish at the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at Colonial Golfers Club, as the team finished the season with a 53-41-3 overall record.

The Polar Bears finished 12 shots behind

first-place Mount Union and just one stroke behind second-place Otterbein.

Senior Chase Cummings, of Tulsa, Okla., finished in a tie for third place (153), falling just two shots away from the OAC Championship.

Junior Ben Kretz, of Roundhead, Ohio, was the only other Polar Bear to earn All-OAC honors, finishing the championship in a tie for sixth place (155).

Kretz (78.3) and Cummings (79.3) were the lowest two scorers for ONU on the season.

Freshman Tom Repicky (79.7), of Bentleyville, Ohio, junior Andrew Rahrig (79.9), of Westerville, Ohio, and senior Wes Immler (79.9), of Lorain, Ohio, also had scoring averages under 80.

Women’s Golf (101-19)

With sixth-year head coach Stacey Hairston, BS ’89, H of F ’01, at the helm, the Ohio Northern women’s golf team turned in an outstanding 101-19 overall record for the 2007-08 season.

Northern finished first in five events and finished in second place in five others.

The Polar Bears finished second in the 2008 OAC Conference Championship with a total score of 362-345–707.

Senior Meagan Brennan, of Mason, Ohio, finished the OAC Championship in third place with an 87-83–170. She also qualified for the NCAA Division II I Women’s Golf Championship, where she carded a four-day score of 79-85-87-76–327 and

finished in a tie for 46th place.

Brennan led the team with an 82.3 scoring average and finished her illustrious career with many postseason honors, including Duramed FUTURES Tour NGCA Honorable Mention All-America, NGCA First Team All-Great Lakes Region and First Team All-OAC.

Sophomore Megan Russell, of Lambertville, Mich., earned Second Team All-OAC honors.

Senior Amy Gillen, of Troy, Ohio, sophomores Persha Ford, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Kaylea Thresher, of Powell, Ohio, and freshman Ashley Johnson, of Covington, Ohio, all earned Honorable Mention All-OAC recognition.

The Polar Bears also broke the singleseason team scoring record with an average of 350.2, four strokes better than last year’s record-breaking performance of 354.4.

Softball (28-13, 14-4 OAC)

The Ohio Northern softball team finished the 2008 season with a 28-13 overall record and a 14-4 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference, qualifying for the OAC Tournament for the second consecutive season under fifth-year head coach Annette Hunt-Shepherd.

Sophomore Tina Mangola, of Cranberry Township, Pa., was a repeat Louisville Slugger/ NFCA Third Team All-America selection, also earning the honor as a freshman in 2007, and is ONU’s all-time career home run record leader with 22 as a two-year starter in right field.

In 2008, Mangola hit .448 with team highs of 10 home runs, 43 RBI, a school-record 16 doubles, five triples and 51 runs scored. She also was a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen bases.

Mangola and sophomores Liz Decima, of Freedom, Pa., and Mandi Fought, of Toledo, Ohio, each earned Louisville Slugger/NFCA First Team All-Central Region honors. Junior Danielle Goubeaux, of Coldwater, Ohio, and sophomore Cortney Cash, of Chicago Heights, Ill., each were picked Second Team.

All five of the regional award winners were named First Team All-OAC.

Decima led the team with a .455 batting average, while Goubeaux (.442) and Fought (.410) were third and fourth, respectively.

Fought also set the single-season and career records with 33 on the year and 55 all-time.

Cash hit .305 while leading the team on the mound with a 2.58 ERA in 130 1/3 innings pitched.

Men’s Tennis (18-5, 9-0 OAC)

The Polar Bear men’s tennis team won the OAC regular season and tournament championships and made its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 under third-year head coach Glenn Scheutzow.

ONU finished the season with an 18-5 overall mark and won the OAC regular season title for the fifth consecutive year with an 9-0 record.

Seniors Bart Schenck, of Wooster, Ohio, and Micah Scott, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and junior Chris Dohner, of Englewood, Ohio, were all selected First Team All-OAC.

Junior Ryan Paul, of West Milton, Ohio, was named Second Team All-OAC.

Schenck led Ohio Northern with a 19-5 singles record and teamed up with Scott to record a team-best 23-4 doubles record.

Coach Sheutzow was named OAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row in 2008.

Women’s Tennis (20-6, 7-2 OAC)

The Ohio Northern women’s tennis team went 20-6 overall and finished in a tie for second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 7-2 record during the 2008 regular season under seventh-year head coach Scott Wills, BSBA ’87.

ONU made it to the final match of the OAC Tournament for the seventh consecutive season.

Senior Ashley Yontz, of Springfield, Ohio, and freshman Jacqueline Sammon, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, each were picked Second Team All-OAC. Sophomore Katie Gibbs, of Hartville, Ohio, and Liz Bajusz, of North Royalton, Ohio, were named Honorable Mention All-OAC.

Yontz led the team with a 20-6 singles record, while the tandem of Gibbs and sophomore Jacki Hillis, of Solon, Ohio, had the most doubles victories with a 15-13 record, going 7-1 in OAC play.

Yontz finished her career 76-16 in singles, 54-20 in doubles and 130-36 overall. Her 130 victories rank her third all time at ONU.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field (53-10)

Ohio Northern finished the 2008 season with a 53-10 record and a second-place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships under 11th-year head coach Brian Cole.

The Polar Bears finished first at the OAC Split Meet, the Kenyon Invitational and the Joe Banks Invitational.

Junior Jimmy O’Brien, of Pemberville, Ohio, qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships and finished fourth in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs.

O’Brien claimed OAC Championships in the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run and 4-by800 meter relay.

Senior Ryan Robertson, of Pickerington, Ohio, also made it to the NCAA III Championships but did not place in the event.

Robertson won three events at the OAC Championship, including the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the long jump.

Juniors Steve Darmon, of Brimfield, Ohio, and Eric Porter of Wauseon, Ohio, and sophomore Joe Amstutz, of Bluffton, Ohio, joined O’Brien on the winning 4-by-800 meter relay team.

Sophomore Jacob Weyrauch, of Orrville, Ohio, claimed his first OAC Championship in the pole vault.

In total, 14 Polar Bears earned All-OAC honors.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field (41-20) Eleventh-year head coach Brian Cole guided the Ohio Northern women’s track and field team to a 41-20 overall record and a third-place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.

Northern finished first at its home event, the Joe Banks Invitational.

The 4-by-400 meter relay team, comprised of juniors Joy Kessler, of Republic, Ohio, and Dani Noe, of

Woodville, Ohio, sophomore Brittany Farber, of East Sparta, Ohio, and freshman Lauren Rupp, of Archbold, Ohio, won the OAC Championship.

Noe also claimed an OAC crown in the 400-meter hurdles while Farber earned All-OAC honors with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run.

Noe’s OAC efforts earned her a bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, as well.

Seniors Elizabeth DiNino, of Beavercreek, Ohio, Karen Miller, of Montpelier, Ohio, and Darci Walthew, of East Bethany, N.Y., all brought home second-place finishes at the OAC Championships.

Miller and Walthew each set school records in their events. Miller took second in the 1,500-meter run, and Walthew placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. DiNino claimed second in the 10,000-meter run.

Miller, Walthew and DiNino joined the sister combination of Jackie and Joy Kessler, both of Republic, Ohio, as Academic All-OAC selections.

Junior Amy Swigert, of Jeffersonville, Ohio, jumped a career best at the OAC Championships to place second and earn All-OAC honors.

Sophomores Abby Schulte, of New Bremen, Ohio, and Dani Noe each earned All-OAC honors at the OAC Championships. Schulte placed third in the 100-meter dash, and Noe took third in the 400-meter hurdles.

In all, 15 student-athletes were named All-OAC or Academic All-OAC.

Phil Gray, BA ’58, Takes a Hike!

Tell Phil Gray, BA ’58, to take a hike, and he’s likely to invite you to join him – to enjoy the scenic diversity of Arizona.

After 30 years as a communications professor at Northern Illinois University, Gray and his wife, Kaye, retired to Arizona and took up some new pastimes. He is president, for the second time, of the Green Valley Hiking Club in Green Valley, Ariz. The club has about 500 members and over 340 different hikes. “I’m one of the hike leaders,” Gray says, and every Thursday we go out. In January, February and March, when our population is largest, we have 13 or 14 different hikes. Arizona is an extremely diverse state. We can hike from the desert to the Ponderosa pine forests in just a few hours. It really is a fascinating place.”

When he returned to ONU’s campus for his 50th class reunion, it was the continuation of a long affiliation with the University. That affiliation also is a family history, one that even traces back to the College of Pharmacy’s namesake. “My great grandfather, Joseph Roller, was one of Lehr’s first students,” Gray says. “His daughter, my grandmother, married Bert Klinger, and Bert Klinger’s sister married a fellow named Rudolph Raabe, PH G ’10, Hon.D. ’84.”

Several other family members have spent time at Northern, although Gray has no plans to let the legacy end. “We weren’t able to convince one of our children to go here, but I’m working on a grandson now,” he says with a smile.

He still lauds the quality of instruction he received. “At Ohio State they asked me about my educational background. I had graduated from an Ohio high school that was very poor quality. I told them, I wouldn’t have been at Ohio State if it weren’t for Ohio Northern, because the quality of the education I got at ONU more than compensated for the inadequacies of my high school training.”

Jerome Wernow, BSPH ’74, Explores Bioethics

Jerome Wernow, BSPH ’74, says it’s been a long while since his name crossed the desk of anyone at Ohio Northern University.

The last time may have been 1974, when he was president of the student body at the College of Pharmacy, with long hair, scruffy beard and all. His journey from then to his reemergence is a fascinating story.

After a short while as a pharmacist in a Columbus hospital, Wernow went west to Oregon to pursue a doctorate in psycho-pharmacology, focusing on hallucinogens. Unfortunately, Wernow says, he took that line of study a little more personally than most. In fact, he ended up homeless with hours of time for reflection spent in his teepee in the foothills of the Oregon coast range.

The kindness extended by many folks along the way helped to make that time short and the transition back into community and faith possible.

Wernow says after that timeout, he went to work as a pharmacist in places as far away as the island of Borneo and as close as the inner city of Portland, Ore. While in Portland, he served as director of pharmacy at Physicians and Surgeon’s Hospital and also developed the Pharmacy Recovery Network (PRN) for which he received the outstanding projects award from the Oregon Society of Hospital Pharmacists. It was during his time in Portland in the 1980s that his interest was piqued in bioethics, particularly euthanasia, even before the issue came into vogue in the policy debates of the Northwest.

He explains, “A couple of master’s degrees from Western Seminary, along with a thesis on euthanasia, prepared me to swim in the waters of the Netherlands’ debate as an accidental tourist of eight years or, more accurately, as a theology professor with Greater Europe Mission in Heverlee, Belgium.”

There he entered into the bioethics dialog and study at the University of Louvain in philosophy, medical ethics and religious studies. Two master’s degrees and a doctorate later, he found himself writing chapters in books and articles, as well testifying in federal courts as an expert witness in the area of bioethics.

Recently, Wernow, now executive director of the Northwest Center for Bioethics, Portland, Ore., was offered an Erasmus Scholar’s Award to participate in an international research team investigating the toleration of religious conscience in health care practice. An Erasmus International Scholar is an “academic and/or professional of outstanding experience who carries out teaching or research assignments and scholarly work in the institutions participating in the Erasmus Mundus Master Course.”

Wernow accepted the offer as visiting scholar after approval of a short sabbatical by his church. Candada J. “Candi” Moore, BA ’78: Community Service is Part of the Job

“I learned at Ohio Northern to be involved in my community,” says Candada J. “Candi” Moore, BA ’78 , “to take an interest and to give back.

That led me to get involved with several non profits.”

For a time, she served on the village council in Granville, Ohio, including time as vice mayor. “When I was on village council as vice mayor, the mayor was also an Ohio Northern University graduate, Matthew McGowan, BA ’78.

Until we got involved in politics in Grandville, I had never really known Matt.

But now we’re fast friends.”

Although no longer on village council, Moore continues her non-profit work as chairman of the Bryn Du Commission in Granville and as chairman of the Licking Land Trust.

The Bryn Du Commission, Welsh for “black dirt,” is responsible for renovating and operating a historic mansion in the heart of Granville, including about 50 acres of land. The commission raises money and finds ways to reuse the various old structures on the property. The Licking Land Trust is involved in preserving natural green spaces in and around Licking County.

At Ohio Northern, Moore had a dual major in psychology and business administration, then went on to earn a law degree at The Ohio State University. For 10 years, she practiced law with Squire, Sanders and Dempsey, a global law firm.

When she decided to look for a position as an “in-house” attorney, she suddenly found her psychology and business administration lessons were just what she needed.

Moore explains, “When I interviewed with the president of Huntington’s trust company, I thought I was just going to be a lawyer for the department, “I learned at Ohio helping them deal with all the legal issues they get involved in. But when he offered me the job, he said, ‘I don’t want you to be just the lawyer for the Northern to be involved department; I want you to run the department.’ That was a whole new thing for in my community…to me.”

“We act as trustee on bond issues,” she explains. It is the trustee’s job to make sure the corporations issuing the bonds are meeting all their obligations, in addition to collecting the principal and interest due and paying it to the bond holders, “We’re a fiduciary that represents the bond holder’s interests,” she says. That work includes many complex areas of the law, from tax law to real estate law, corporation law and securities laws.

Still, she finds time for work in her community and at ONU. Moore serves on the College of Business Administration’s Advisory Board and has hosted student-employer networking events.

“I am really proud of what is happening at the University now. It is just phenomenal,” she says.

Brett Gilbert, BSCE, is the director of civil engineering at Bornengineering in Westminster, CO. He and his wife, Rona, reside in Denver, CO, and they enjoy hiking, skiing, biking and other activities in the Rocky Mountains.

The weekend of May 30-June 1, 2008, marked the celebration of Alumni Weekend 2008. Amidst sunny skies and warm weather, over 200 very enthusiastic alumni journeyed back to campus for a golden celebration. The weekend was jam-packed with exciting activities such as “Meet the Dean” sessions, an in-depth “inside” tour of the Remington Walk (held indoors due to rain), horse and carriage rides, jewelry making with our First Lady, and a discussion based on the upcoming presidential election. Celebrations continued at the Class of 1958 Dinner, Alumni Association Picnic, Garden Reception at the Dicke House and Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet. Ohio Northern’s own Alumni Jazz Band showcased their talents on Saturday evening with a breathtaking performance that brought everyone to their feet. The weekend’s festivities concluded with a Sunday breakfast in McIntosh and the eighth annual Robby Golf Classic at Colonial Hills Golfers Club. After an amazing weekend of classmate reunions and milestone celebrations, Alumni Weekend 2008 will be a treasured memory for all.

Alumni Weekend 2008 was graced with the pleasure of honoring five distinguished alumni award recipients during the Alumni Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. The award is given to alumni of the University who have shown loyalty and compassion towards their alma mater and profession. This year’s recipients included:

Ed Gmyrek, BSEd ’65. Gmyrek is a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and N-Men. A baseball and football letter winner, Gmyrek is a veteran of the United States Air Force and a retired teacher. Gmyrek received a fifth-place ribbon in his age group at the National Senior Games in 2005.

Floyd Keith, BSEd ’70. Since the day Keith transitioned from a student to a professional, he has enriched the lives of athletes on a daily basis.

An expert in his field, Keith had a remarkable coaching career at several universities. A member of Ohio Northern University’s Athletic Hall of Fame, Keith is the executive director of the Black Coaches and Administrators, and was recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of “The 101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports.”

Dean Bundschu, BA ’96 ‘Playing a New Game’

Dean Bundschu, BA ’96, a collegiate athlete, realizes how important it is for high school athletes to demonstrate their talents to college coaches all across the country for recruitment purposes. Not only has he provided a place for students to connect with college coaches, but he has also found a way to help sports enthusiasts connect.

Beginning in 2007, Bundschu and his team, including ONU alumni Dale Bundschu, BS ’97 and Jeremy Rohrs, BA ’97, launched PrepChamps, a company that helps student athletes gain recognition and potential recruitment by college coaches. The company combines multiple social online networking functions for athletes, fans, coaches and parents. At www.prepchamps.com, Beginning in 2007, Bundschu and his young athletes can build profiles that help enhance their chances during the recruiting process.

While attending Ohio Northern as a political science major, Bundschu never dreamed of team, including ONU alumni Dale conducting business in the online world. After graduating in 1996, Bundschu served in the Bundschu, BS ’97, and Jeremy Rohrs, United States Army for six years. He always had a passion for the Internet, computers and BA ’97, launched PrepChamps, a sports and decided to combine these three interests to create a Web site that helps high school company that helps student athletes athletes reach their goal of playing collegiate sports. gain recognition and potential

Bundschu explains, “It is one thing to throw up a technology platform and market the athletes that way. But, credibility among the coaches is key, both at the collegiate level and at recruitment by college coaches. the high school level.”

By partnering with multiple organizations, including Reebok, Driven Athletics and Five-Star Basketball, PrepChamps has developed levels of credibility among coaches, companies, students and colleges that most Web sites are not normally able to obtain. Bundschu believes that, because of the relationships established with these companies, PrepChamps was able to quickly expand.

Bundschu hopes that the company will encourage athletes to continue their sporting careers through college. This form of college recruitment is different, unique and affordable for the athletes and coaches. Bundschu says, “We can’t promise them a scholarship, but we increase their chances by giving them a chance to potentially connect with coaches that they wouldn’t have had a chance to connect with. For the coaches, this provides the chance to find a diamond in the rough.”

When discussing the relationship that the three ONU alumni share, it is evident that their relationship will grow stronger as they continue to build their new business. As the company continues to expand, they also continue to build their connections with other ONU alumni. When asked if he wished to share any advice with the current students at Ohio Northern, Bundschu says, “Don’t be afraid to take risk. Life is too short not to give it your all and maximize your talents.”

It seems that Bundschu took his own advice; he took a risk in establishing and building his company, and it has only brought him great results.

The Robby, named in honor of Bill Robinson, BSEd ’61, H of F ’05, Hon. D. ’05, is an endowment dedicated to provide financial support to students in need. Funds have been used to create scholarships, grants-in-aid or emergency support. Not only was this year the eighth annual golf outing, but it was his birthday! Guests enjoyed a day of leisure, as well as delicious birthday cake during dinner.

Dr. Robert Blickensderfer, BSPh ’59, enrolled at Ohio Northern University immediately after his discharge from the Navy, where he served on the U.S. Yorktown during the Korean conflict. He met and fell in love with his future wife, Barbara (Garris), BSPh ’60, while they were working their way through the College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University.

After graduating, the Blickensderfers purchased and ran a retail pharmacy in Sugar Creek, Ohio, until 1965 when Bob decided to attend medical school at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He later served as a faculty member in the college while, at the same time, operating his own family practice in Kirksville, Mo. During this time, Barbara was the pharmacist at the local hospital in Kirksville. After successful careers and raising four beautiful children, they retired in 1996 and moved to Edgewater, Fla. The lasting friendships they forged at ONU continue today, and Barbara still gets together every year with her sorority sisters.

Bob and Barbara believe that their educations at Ohio Northern provided excellent foundations on which to build careers.

“No greater gift can be bestowed upon an individual than a sound education. Everything else,” Bob continues, “pales in comparison.” Barbara goes on to say, “We believe ONU has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in education, and we want to be a small part of that endeavor.”

Megan (Gezze) Blank, BSME ’02, Engineers History

Megan (Gezze) Blank, BSME ’02, has found a unique niche in engineering. She works for Westlake Reed Leskosky, an architecture and engineering firm in Cleveland, Ohio. She held a summer internship with the company during her undergraduate studies and has been employed with them since graduating from Ohio Northern University in 2002.

At Westlake Reed Leskosky, Blank has specialized in updating heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems, as well as plumbing and fire protection, in historic buildings. Blank and her coworkers find the best way to update these buildings while preserving their unique and historic architecture. The firm designs a wide variety of structures, including office buildings, theaters, museums, health care facilities, performance arts centers and college campus buildings.

“It is great to be able to go to a city or look around the city I live in and see the buildings I have worked on and take pride in,” says Blank. Blank describes attending formal openings at a few of the buildings she helped repair and being pleased that everyone is comfortable with the temperature and low noise levels.

“If our work is not seen or heard, it means we’ve done a good job!” she says.

Blank is especially proud of her work on the historic Balboa Theatre in San Diego, Calif.

The theatre opened in 1924 and hosted nationally recognized vaudeville acts and major stars of the 1920s. After changing owners several times in the following years, and being used as a residence for sailors during World War II, the theatre was closed. The city of San Diego acquired the building in 1986 and later committed to restoring it within the guidelines of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings.

In 2004, Westlake Reed Leskosky began the initial phase of the restoration. Blank says that much of the mechanical equipment was in tight spaces throughout the theatre, so the team had to do a lot of exploring in tunnels and hidden spaces to find it. She personally drew a detail for a design that was painted on a large rebuilt exhaust fan. Blank also helped design and draw the construction documents, as well as manage construction issues, and made several trips to the theatre to observe the project’s progress. Once it was completed, she even attended the grand re-opening of the historic landmark.

Currently, Blank is taking part in a project that includes a renovation of and addition to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Westlake Reed Leskosky is working with Fentress Architects to update the layout and architecture of the museum, and the team is aiming for a certified “green” design from LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

A LEED®-certified design, says Blank, “allows us to be creative in our energy-efficient design strategies.”

Blank says that ONU helped her learn to work well with others, apply theory, solve problems and present solutions to diverse audiences. She liked the small-school environment of Northern because it was easy to seek help from faculty. The professors know their students, and the students are friendly and cooperative, she says. Her favorite memories of her time at ONU are the Sunday nights of her sophomore year. She and many of her Engineering Analysis classmates would stay up nearly all night in computer labs to finish project design papers.

She says of those times, “You start to get goofy in the wee hours of the night. Nothing like waiting till the last minute!”

Blank occasionally returns to ONU for career fairs, at which she recruits for Westlake Reed Leskosky. She has also presented to senior mechanical engineering classes and the Society of Women Engineers group on campus. She has just passed her professional engineering licensure exam and plans to continue learning about HVAC and sustainable design.

In November 2007, she married Doug Blank, a civil engineer who graduated from Case Western Reserve University. They are currently living in Broadview Heights, Ohio.

Michelle Dyer, BFA ’02, has taken her singing and dancing talents from the small town of Ada to big city theatres around the country.

Right after she graduated, Dyer performed in Jekyll and Hyde at the Carousel Dinner Theatre in Akron, Ohio. One of the actors she performed with was from New York City and happened to need a roommate.

“So,” Dyer says, “I packed two suitcases and got on a plane to the Big Apple!”

Dyer’s first job was on the national tour of Kiss Me, Kate.

After that, she worked for regional theatres around the country, including Casa Mañana in Fort Worth, Texas; Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Mass.; Kansas City Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, Mo.; Atlanta Theatre of the Stars in Atlanta, Ga.; McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J.; and The Denver Center in Denver, Colo.

One of Dyer’s favorite experiences was performing as Young Heidi in the Barrington Stage Company’s production of Follies by Stephen Sondheim. Dyer’s character was the counterpart of Heidi, played by Marni Nixon. Nixon was the singing voice for Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in An Affair to Remember and Audrey Hepburn in West Side Story. Nixon and Dyer performed what Dyer described as “an amazing duet.”

Another great experience for Dyer was performing in White Christmas at the Denver Center. The show reminded her of the Christmas shows she saw with her family as a child in Cincinnati, and seeing so many families in the audience touched her.

“Knowing that I had a part in their holiday memories meant the world to me,” she says.

Dyer had an excellent learning experience at Ohio Northern, and says that the support of her professors was crucial. In particular, Dyer’s voice teacher, Kirsten Osbun-Manley, and dance instructor, Laurie Bell, were great inspirations to her.

“The personal attention at ONU is second to none. It truly is a positive, caring institution with a solid academic reputation,” she says.

Dyer’s favorite memories of ONU are of her participation in the group On Broadway ... On the Road. The members traveled to alumni meetings across the country with President Kendall L. and Mrs. Toby Baker, BFA ’06. After performing, the members had the opportunity to meet alumni.

Dyer was inspired by how much ONU meant to so many people, and she especially enjoyed getting to know the Bakers personally.

Currently, Dyer is rehearsing for A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis Village, Cape Cod, Mass. In this production, Dyer plays Nina the ingénue, a young woman who is charmingly innocent.

“The press coverage is exciting!” says Dyer, “We’re getting our picture taken for The Boston Globe, and The New York Times is sitting in on a rehearsal to compile information for a feature article.”

Dyer’s career goals include being cast in a Broadway show in the near future.

Kristen (Pniewski) Steele, BA ’07, has a new appreciation for music thanks to ONU. She recently won the ONU iPod in this year’s “Stay Connected” contest. In exchange for her contact information, Kristen’s name was entered along with 343 other entries.

A 2007 graduate who majored in professional writing, Kristen was married last fall to ONU alumnus Brandon Steele, BS ’04. Kristen and Brandon reside in Findlay and recently purchased their first home.

An employee of Blanchard Valley Health System, Kristen says her first job as the communication coordinator is everything she dreamed of and more. She credits her time spent working as an intern with the Office of Communications and Marketing for her drive and desire to work in the public relations sector. Kristen plans on staying even more connected with ONU in the coming months, as she is taking on the responsibility of the auxiliary advisor for the ONU color guard. Congratulations, Kristen!

Charles “Sandy” Davidson IV, Spartanburg, SC, February 7, 2008. Sandy received a bachelor of arts degree from Wofford College and a master of arts degree from Catholic University. Sandy held several positions within the U.S. Army during his 37-year career. He was an advisor to a Saudi Arabian Army Battalion, a U.S. Defense Representative to Pakistan, a commander of the 2nd PSYOP Group in Cleveland, OH, a commander of the 350th Civil Affairs Command in Pensacola, FL, and the deputy director of Operations for U.S. Central Command in Tampa, FL, among others. He proudly served during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Joint Guard and Operation Iraqi Freedom. A volunteer at Morrow County Hospital, Margaret was a member of American Association of University, Bluebell Twig, Delta Kappa Gamma, Morrow County Art Guild and Morrow County Historical Society. While at Northern, Kathryn was active in theatre, debate team, Theta Alpha Phi, Pi Kappa Delta and Phi Chi. In addition to her bachelor’s degree, Kathryn received a master’s degree in speech pathology from Purdue University.

She worked as a clinical speech therapist for Pennsylvania public schools for over 20 years. After retirement, Kathryn went on to train at Temple University and later assisted stroke victims with speech rehabilitation for 10 years. Her memberships included the American Speech and Hearing Association and Swarthmore Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her family and friends.

While at Northern, Rodney was a member of Student Senate. After graduating from Northern, Rodney went back to Sidney to practice law for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Sidney School Board, the Board of Directors of Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Association, the Shelby County Deer Hunters Association, and the Gold Coast Shrine. Rodney was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie, and his second wife, Bernice (Hageman), AA ’33, BSEd ’54.

Niola Modelle Metcalf Niola Modelle Metcalf, devoted wife of Coburn “Bud” Metcalf, BSCE ’40, died Aug. 8 in Toledo, Ohio. Born in Paduca, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jewel and Mamie Holt. The family made their home in Toledo, Ohio, where she graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1937. She attended Taylor University in Upland, Ind., from 1941-42, with plans to become a social worker working with immigrant populations.

In 1942, she married Bud Metcalf. They celebrated 66 years of marriage and are the parents of three children, Beverly (James) Nelson, Thomas (Janice) Metcalf, and JoAnne (Lawrence) Powell, nine grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

A devoted mother, she served in Cub Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts, PTA, daily vacation Bible school and church activities with the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Modelle was an avid gardener, past member and president of the Mt. Vernon Garden Club and a member of the Brandywine Garden Club. She and her husband were world travelers. In 1974, she accompanied her husband to the former Soviet Union as a delegate with the American Society of Civil Engineers Goodwill People-to-People tour. She retired from the JCPenny Co. after 15 years.

Dedicated in 2001, the Modelle Metcalf Visual Arts Center at Taylor University is named in her honor.

Mary (Mohr) Stover, BA, Lima, OH, March 5, 2008. While at Northern, Mary was a member of Delta Zeta and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. A retired teacher, Mary helped to establish several organizations including the St. Charles Elementary library, and the St. Charles Catholic Church and Altar Rosary Society.

Harold “Hal” Grover, BA, Wadsworth, OH, April 4, 2008. While at Northern, Hal was a member of Delta Sigma Phi and Beta Beta Beta. Hal served with the U.S. Army before attending Northern. After graduating from Northern, Hal went on to work at the Battelle Institute and graduate from The Ohio State University medical school. Hal retired in 1992 after a longtime career with his own family practice. He was a member of several organizations including the American Academy of Family Practice, Medina Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Northeast Ohio Medical Planning Board and the Summit County Chapter of Family Practice. In addition to these memberships, Hal served as the chief of staff for Wadsworth Rittman Hospital. Hal was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta “Birdie” Grover.

William Haines, BSEE, Sandusky, OH, April 28, 2008. A veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II, William enjoyed a professional career with G.H. McGee Corp. as an electrical engineer. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his family and friends.

John D. Sears Jr., LLB, Bucyrus, OH, March 11, 2008. Before attending Ohio Northern University, John served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He served for 16 years as the prosecuting attorney for Crawford County and was the general legal council for People Savings & Loan Co. in Bucyrus, OH. Throughout his law career, he worked with his father until 1962, then went on to work with Robert Spurlock and the law firm of Sears, Pry, Griebling and McBride.

His memberships included American Legion Post #181, AMVETS Post #27, Crawford County Bar Association, the Elks and the VFW. He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne.

Ted Arrington, BSPh, Chesapeake, OH, December 15, 2006. Ted was a retired pharmacist and owner of Arrington Pharmacy.

William “Bill” Arthur, BSEd, Archbold, OH, March 11, 2008. While at Northern, Bill was an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, theatre and the baseball, basketball and football teams. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Bill received a master’s degree from Indiana University, and he taught seventh-grade Ohio history and driver’s education for Archbold schools.

In addition to teaching at Archbold, he served for 13 years as the head basketball coach, 10 years as the assistant football coach, and 6 years as the varsity baseball coach. He was inducted into the Ohio Coaches Hall of Fame, the Ohio Northern University Athletic Hall of Fame, the Archbold Athletic Boosters Hall of Fame and the District 7 Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jocelyn.

William “Bill” Blauser, BSPh, San Antonio, TX, April 2, 2008. While at Northern, Bill was a member of the American Chemical Society and Sigma Pi. After graduation, Bill went on to serve as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He later moved to San Antonio, TX, where he worked in retail pharmacies and opened Blauser’s Pharmacy. After enjoying a career in pharmacy, he earned a degree in education, taught for several years and ultimately retired in 1992. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett (James), BA ’53.

Richard “Dick” Pryce, BSPh, Columbus, OH, June 1, 2008. While at Northern, Dick was a member of Sigma Pi. A veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, Dick was a retired pharmacist and owner of Pryce Champion Drugs Inc. His memberships included the American Legion, Elks Lodge-Warren, Ohio State Pharmacy Board, Old Erie Lodge #3 F&AM, Trumbull County Pharmaceutical Association and Riverside Methodist Church. A YMCA Indian Guide, Dick is survived by his wife, Ellen (Griffith), BSPh ’51.

Bernice (Hageman) Blake, BSEd, AA ’33, Highland Beach, FL, May 20, 2008. While at Northern, Bernice was a member of Phi Chi sorority. A retired Sidney and Shelby county teacher, Bernice was a member of Bera Court Ladies Shrine, Coasterettes Shrine, Bridge Club and Order of the Eastern Star-Chapter 298. Bernice was survived by her husband, Rodney, LLB ’39.

Ruth Mills, BSEd, Lima, OH, May 2, 2008. A native of Mount Vernon, Ruth retired from Lima City Schools after 40 years of service. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and Trinity United Methodist Church. She is survived by her family and friends.

William “Bill” Sullivan, BSPh, Watkins Glen, NY, June 20, 2008.

While at Northern, Bill was a member of the Americal Chemical Society and Student National Pharmaceutical Association. After graduation, Bill spent 10 years in retail pharmacy and then went on to work for E.R. Squibb/a Bristol Meyers Squibb. He ultimately retired after 25 years. A member of the Montour Falls Mechanics Club, the Montour Moose Lodge #426 and the Watkins Glen Lodge of Elks BPOE #1546, Bill enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Canada. Bill is survived by his family and friends.

While at Northern, Rick was active in football, track and intramurals.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Rick worked for Shaw and Ott Drug in 1954. He later owned and operated Medical Center Pharmacy and Rick’s Pharmacy. Rick was a member of the American Pharmacists Association, Baku Grotto, First English Lutheran Church and Mansfield Lodge No. 35 F&AM. Rick was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna.

Zane Bailey, BSPh, Xenia, OH, February 13, 2008. While at Northern, Zane was a member of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Zane retired after a 50-year career as a pharmacist in the Xenia, OH, area. His love of rabbits made him an active member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association, the American Foundation of New Zealand Rabbit Breeders, the Greene County Fair 4-H Rabbit Association and the Ohio State New Zealand Rabbit Breeders Association.

His additional memberships included FOE 1689, FOE 2641 and the Xenia Hospitality Square Dancers. Zane is survived by his wife, Helen.

Bernard enjoyed a career in pharmacy with several companies, including Prescription Center Inc., SuperX Drug, Medical Center Pharmacy, the Apothecary Shop and Phar-Mor. After retiring in 1998, he lived in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for six years and then moved back to Ohio. He was a member of the Association of Independent Men. Bernard is survived by his wife, Gerri.

Roger Heintz, BS, Plattsburgh, NY, February 10, 2007. Roger made significant contributions to the field of science, specifically in biochemistry.

He completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Kentucky and much of his findings are included in today’s biochemistry textbooks. Roger was a beloved professor at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, as well as an avid birdwatcher. He and his wife, Judy, who survives, traveled to such destinations as Mexico, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago to research bird species. Most recently, Roger was inducted into his high school’s Hall of Fame of Distinguished Graduates.

Richard “Buck” Shaw, JD, Alexander City, AL, June 24, 2007. Before attending Ohio Northern University’s College of Law, Buck received a bachelor of arts degree from Muskingum College.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp., Buck’s professional career included being a security consultant for Russell Corporation, the director of security at Rich’s and Davidson’s and an F.B.I. agent. He was an Elder and Sunday school teacher for First Presbyterian Church, and he served as the chairman of the board for the Alexander City Diversity Committee and the Lake Martin Area Boys and Girls Clubs. Buck is survived by his wife, Donna.

Hugh Moser, BSEd, Lima, OH, June 8, 2008. While at Northern, Hugh was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the marching band. His professional career included13 years as a junior high school teacher at Bath Schools, four years at Perry Schools and 15 years at Shalom Christian School. He ultimately retired from Ford Motor Co. Lima Engine Plant after 19-plus years.

A veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Hugh was a founding member of Shalom Ministries. Hugh is survived by his wife, Jane.

Edward “Ed” Lay, BSEd, Kenton, OH, March 29, 2008. After graduating from Northern, Ed went on to receive a master’s degree from The Ohio State University. Ed was employed by the Columbus Public Schools for 30 years and held various positions including executive elementary director, principal and teacher. He also served as the education coordinator at Stevens House-House of Hope and an adjunct professor at Columbus State.

His memberships included Kenton Elks Lodge, Pheasants Forever of Hardin County and St. John’s United Church of Christ. Ed was honored to have been the recipient of the Keep Hardin County Beautiful Award, and he is survived by his wife, Lynda (Campbell), BSEd ’63.

David Arnold, BA, Sheffield, OH, February 16, 2008. After graduating from Northern, David went on to graduate from the Ohio State Institute of Finance and work for Reliance Electric/Dodge Electric. Throughout his professional career, he was employed by Otto Brothers SOHIO, Mint Lake Valley Farm and Lumber Co., Frank’s Tractor Sales, Columbia National Insurance and Preformed Line Products. His many accomplishments include building Mint Lake on his family farm in Gageville, NY, earning his pilot’s license, building the first underground home in Ashtabula County, being named to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and being listed in Who’s Who of the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World. David is survived by his wife, Patricia.

Charles “Chuck” Hunter, BSPh, Zanesville, OH, December 23, 2007.

While at Northern, Chuck was a member of Interfraternity Council, Kappa Psi, Pharmacy Council and Student National Pharmaceutical Association. Chuck’s pharmacy background afforded him the opportunity to work for Bethesda Hospital, Marion MedCenter and Bucyrus Community Hospital. He ultimately retired from Genesis HealthCare System as a chief operating officer. Before his death, Chuck was working on a Federal Grant to bring together health clinics in Morgan and Muskingum County. His memberships included the Army National Guard, First Christian Church, Pro-Muskingum, Salvation Army and Zanesville Art Center. Chuck is survived by his wife, Cheryl (McMains), BA ’68.

James Sheets, BSEd, Lima, OH, March 2, 2008. While at Northern, James was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, chorus, marching band, and the jazz and wind ensembles. Throughout his professional career, James was a machinist at Wapak Machine Co., a music teacher at St. Joseph School and the owner of Jim’s Jems. He was the past president of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 691, the scout master for Boy Scout Troop 9 and a member of Wapakoneta First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Wendy.

Jan Kallay, BA, Mentor, OH, January 26, 2007. While at Northern, Jan was a member of The Northern Review.

Jan was a teacher for Mentor Public Schools. He was a member of several organizations, including the Alumni Association of Grand River Academy, Mentor Teachers Association, Ohio Education Association, Painesville Elks 549 BPOE, Painesville Little League and the United Methodist Church of Painesville. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Mentor High School Hockey Blue Line Club. Jan is survived by his wife, Linda.

Angela Badertscher, BS, Lima, OH, August 17, 2008. While at Northern, Angela was an active member of the Delta Zeta sorority and HPESS Club.

She was a devoted supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides Walk, as well as the Walk for Wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

A member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Angela enjoyed playing tennis, watching NASCAR, and cheering on the Cincinnati Bengals and The Ohio State University Buckeyes. She is survived by her family and friends.

William L. Robinson Young Alumni Award The William L. Robinson Young Alumni Award, established on May 29, 2004, was created to honor and recognize 45 years of influencing Ohio Northern University students and to ensure that this legacy continues throughout the next 45 years. The annual recipient demonstrates passion and loyalty toward their profession, community and alma mater, Ohio Northern University.

Summer 2008 was filled with excitement for over 550 alumni and friends of Ohio Northern University. Baseball fans of all ages joined us at three stadiums to cheer on their favorite hometown teams! Great American Ballpark, Fifth Third Field, and Progressive Field each provided a casual atmosphere for our alumni and friends to enjoy a fun evening, delicious food and great conversation.
