The mission of the Academic Advancement Center (AAC) is to support outstanding undergraduate education through a variety of student support services intended to bolster student success and retention. The AAC offers services to assist all Ohio University undergraduate students towards improving their academic performance and intellectual engagement. Through Tutoring Services, Supplemental Instruction, academic skill development, and academic guidance provided through credit courses, individual appointments, and group sessions, the AAC supports and challenges stuOver the years I have learned dents as learners, while striving to that highly successful students build a strong foundation of academask ‘why not’ instead of ‘why ic success skills. bother’. Why not do the extra credit? Why not attend SI or go to the Math and Science Center Follow us! if it will help me do better in class! f OU Academic Advancement Center

AAC Tutoring Services
HOW TO SIGN UP? Tutoring Services is committed to help Ohio University undergraduate students develop and enhance fundamental skills necessary to succeed academically. Currently, the AAC offers help in over 300 courses. The most popular subjects are 1000 and 2000 level courses in math, biology, chemistry and physics. To ensure success, the AAC prides themselves on three main abilities. First, the AAC works with students collaboratively to identify academic concerns and apply successful strategies for note-taking, time management, study skills and test-taking skills. Second, the faculty and staff encourages students to think critically about course content and assess understanding through dialogue and guided practice. Third, the tutors empower students to become lifelong learners by providing an opportunity to master skills and apply them independently. Tutoring Services is one of the most successful programs at the AAC. The AAC currently has 127 registered peer tutors. Since the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, the AAC has helped over 650 students for more than 4,000 peer tutoring visits. AAC tutors come from a variety of majors and backgrounds, which allows every student to find their ideal match. You can find a full profile of registered tutors at the AAC website. www.ohio.edu/uc/aac

Instruction (SI) Supplemental Instruction (SI) offers FREE, out of class, study sessions for traditionally difficult courses. Students who have successfully completed the courses are trained to lead sessions focused on group learning. The AAC greatly values the work and dedication displayed by all SI leaders. This Fall Semester, we will spotlight Justin and Rachel.
Justin Chapian is a senior studying Mathematics and has been a SI leader for Math the past three semesters. His calculus professor, Dr. Wayan, taught the course in a style similar to how SI sessions are conducted. Justin explained that Dr. Wayan’s main tool in the classroom was a form of Socratic questioning where he would ask guiding questions that allowed students to discover the material, develop a sense of mathematical intuition, and understand calculus on a deeper level. When Justin heard about the SI program he wanted to bring some of the joy he experienced in Dr. Wayan’s classroom to SI study sessions. Justin is in charge of creating and leading three one-hour-sessions per week that relate to the material covered in calculus 1. His job is to engage students in the process of learning math. His goal is for students to learn and understand the material as well as how to better approach and digest math. As a SI Leader, Justin said he gets to be part of a job where he can help make math a less intimidating and enjoyable experience. He finds that challenge rewarding and fulfilling.
Rachel Neal is a senior studying psychology and sociology-criminology and has been a SI Leader for PSY 1010 since last year. She attdended SI sessions for some of her classes, and decided to become a SI Leader after one of her SI Leaders suggested that she apply for the job. Her SI Leader thought that Rachel had the personality and academic success to be an effective SI Leader. Her favorite part about being a SI leader is helping students. She loves that moment when she sees students understanding a concept that they have been struggling with. After working for the SI program for two semesters, Rachel was promoted to one of the SI Team Leader positions. As a team leader she leads weekly meetings with fellow SI Leaders where they discuss SI program goals and brainstorm ways of improving their sessions. Rachel loves helping other SI Leaders become the very best they can, and is happy she can be a resource for her team and students.

AAC College
Achievement Program The College Achievement Program provides opportunities for academic development and intellectual growth, assists students with OHIO’s graduation requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of one’s undergraduate degree. We have a distinguished record of increasing the retention and graduation rates of our participants. CAP offers a range of services to help participants adjust to the rigor of college life, meet the demands of one’s academic program, and achieve timely graduation. CAP is housed in the Academic Advancement Center in Alden Library. The CAP program is about student academic success and ultimately graduation. CAP staff, both professional advisors and peer mentors, serve 275 CAP students per year and provided 1,064 contacts during the fall semester. CAP students tell us that advising is one of the services they value the most. We are proud of our students of whom 31 earned Dean’s List recognition for Fall Semester 2014-2015 and an additional 87 students achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher. CAP is looking forward to another great year!
