All Your Need Is Love… song made globally popular by the Beatles in the late 1960s, ‘All You Need Is Love’ was written to spread a straightforward message, which could surpass all language and cultural barriers, with the aim of uniting hearts and minds across the world — that love is truly everything. What a lovely thought — and certainly one to remind ourselves of on a regular basis. While February is most often associated with Valentine’s Day and romantic love, take the time to make all those you care for feel special, whether it be your family, friends or colleagues, or perhaps even a stranger. This month can be one of the hardest times of the year for those alone, much as birthdays, and other family celebrations such as Eid and Christmas, so offer kindness and make a difference in people’s lives — sometimes all it takes to make someone’s day is a smile. To be able to love another unconditionally without surrendering your power, your own identity, your true self, not only that of the labels you are indentified with such as wife and mother, sister and daughter, you must first learn to love your own self. This means loving every part of you (even those things you may not like), your attributes and faults, successes and failures, your lumps and bumps. Embrace your self and your inner beauty to be able to accept your self exactly as you are, and know that you’re good enough. Be kind, treat your body as a temple, honour your inner voice and respect your path. Only then, when you are a whole person, can you truly love another.

era Wang is such an inspiration for all designers, I am thrilled to be representing her as brand ambassador in Qatar,” says 23-year-old Fatma Ghanem, on hearing the news that she is to be the new local brand ambassador for Vera Wang. Despite being an information technology graduate at the North Atlantic College of Qatar, Fatma says her heart lies in clothes and fashion design. The young Libyan fashionista tells us, “It all began when my family moved to Milano when I was a teenager, so I got to know about fashion and used to visit all the lovely boutiques. “When we got back to the Middle East, people were asking for my advice on what to wear, so I started a website and offered my services as a stylist and personal shopper.” Now, four years on and living in Doha, Fatma is already designing her own abayas (check our Fufi-stylist on Facebook) and is about to launch her second collection. “I opened a boutique selling abayas in Libya because they don’t make them over there and people are very interested in them,” explains Fatma, “whereas in Qatar I sell online and through fashion shows.” Fatma heard about the competition through Facebook and was quick to send in her entries, which were published via Instagram. The contest encouraged fans to showcase their artistic expressions of the Vera Wang brand, by uploading pictures to visually represent the acronym Vibrant, Elegant, Real and Artistic. “It feels great to win because when I was reading about it I knew this was something I really wanted to do,” Fatma says. Owner of the Vera Wang Boutique on the Pearl in Doha, Marya Al-Dafa tells Ohlala! “We chose Fatma (@Fufistylist on Instagram), as the winner of our Instagram competition because we loved her creativity and enthusiasm the most. We felt the inspiration behind the images she submitted best represented the Vera Wang brand. We are delighted to have her as the Vera Wang Qatar local brand ambassador. Congratulations Fatma!” Fatma also won because of her commitment to supporting good causes, which she has done by fundraising for charity at her fashion shows. Speaking about her own style of clothes Fatma says, “I like to change my style a lot. I like to keep up with what is in fashion. For example, this winter there has been a lot of maroon, so I’m choosing to wear that colour, and I like to match with simple accessories, such as a watch, or earrings; I love big earrings, which are very much ‘in’ at the moment.” As brand ambassador for Vera Wang, Fatma’s role will be to generate public interest in the brand by being knowledgeable about it and its products, use social media to tweet, connect and comment and publish Instagram pictures about Vera Wang in Qatar, as well as attend any Vera Wang events. She will also receive discounts and gifts from the store.

Mutually beneficial benevolence
With hands shaken and ink dried on a new agreement between one of the oldest luxury hotels in Qatar, The Ritz Carlton, Doha and the leading humanitarian organisation, Qatar Red Crescent, the benefits are many and far reaching, as Josie Hill discovers on meeting the men behind this shared vision.
“
W
e are like a married couple,” jokes Hoss Vetry, the Ritz Carlton, Doha hotel manager, as he and Qatar Red Crescent Secretary General, Saleh Al-Mahanadi, sit down together to formally announce their new partnership and strategic vision for working together. The idea is quite simple, the Ritz Carlton will provide the Qatar Red Crescent with the facilities it needs to host its annual educational training and humanitarian activities, which will help raise awareness of QRC and its message, and in return QRC will offer first aid training for staff, plus International Humanitarian Law workshops and volunteer opportunities to help some of the vulnerable communities that QRC supports. “By offering us the space to host our events,” says Saleh, “we will be able to take pressure away from our humanitarian causes. So it is a huge benefit for us. But also in terms of volunteer opportunities, QRC has volunteers from all trades and walks of life and we benefit from these people, so even people working in the hospitality industry can help support our mission.” QRC has supported people in 35 countries with a mission to “empower vulnerable communities without discrimination” — working in development, providing healthcare, emergency relief, improving

food security and much much more. Over three million people benefited from QRC relief and development projects in 2011 to 2012. In Qatar, QRC’s annual budget of about QR12.5 million is used on relief and development programs including financial and social support to needy families, as well as educational empowerment projects and funding of medical treatment for needy patients. Responding to the question of the motivation behind the Ritz’ partnership with QRC, aside from just being seen to be a “socially responsible” corporation, and in the light of Qatar being the richest country in the world today, Hoss says, “Yes, it’s true, we are all very lucky, we live in a country which has been amazing in its humanitarian initiatives already. But the advantages for the Ritz are about the long term view. “We are here for good; we are part of this community. This hotel has been here for 11 years and we want to make a change and make a positive change for our staff and for our guests. They love what we do and they want to come and spend money in our hotel because it’s not just a financial operation. “What QRC does is never enough if you look at the size of the tragedies happening around the world, so if we can help support them to do their work then that is what we will do. And as well as providing them the space to do events, hold meetings and so on, we are committing ourselves to support QRC in any way we can.” The hotel chain already runs a Community Footprints program, which focuses on environmental conservation as well as hunger and poverty relief, and children’s wellbeing, both visions shared by QRC. And now Hoss and Saleh, who have worked together since 2008, hope they can garner the support of Ritz staff, hotel guests and the community in Qatar to back their joint vision by getting on board as volunteers, attending charity events, workshops and so on. Hoss tells us, “One of the community projects we did during Ramadan last year was to ask our dinner guests for donations during Ramadan. And many of our guests supported us, and helped us to raise enough money to provide 150 Iftar meals a day for vulnerable communities in Qatar. This is just one of many community projects we have done and now, hopefully, working with QRC we will do more.” Saleh Al-Mahanadi adds, “QRC depends on the support of the community and on local establishments like the Ritz Carlton. We literally could not do what we do without their support.”

Coming together for the family
Artistic genes abound in the Guiragossian family, as three famous siblings tell Ohlala’s Josie Hill, at the opening of their first ever joint exhibition of works by the whole family at the Pearl’s Anima Gallery. Images by Abshar@ Creative Design
“
E
verybody is an artist in a way, my mum was a painter and a mandolin player, and my dad’s father was an artist also,” says Manuella, who as the youngest of five siblings of the famous Lebanese painter Paul Guiragossian, remembers growing up in his studio and watching him work. Her brother and fellow artist Jean-Paul tells us, “You know many people would have loved to sit in my dad’s studio and watch him paint, but for us it was just normal, he was our dad so we didn’t know any different.” On the eve of the opening of their first ever joint exhibition, Emmanuel, Jean-Paul and Manuella talk about the legacy of their father and the impact of this on them and their careers. “Well the name is always there, people are going to connect you with your father whether you like it or not,” Jean-Paul admits, “actually I used to not put my last name down because I didn’t want people to know. Because people do compare you and that’s puts pressure on.” Manuella adds, “For me I think that having a father like mine is the biggest blessing in life. But of course, it’s also challenging because you have to live up to certain expectations, people ask are the kids as good as their dad?” Emmanuel, the oldest sibling and a highly successful artist in his own right, agrees. “Actually when I was young he wasn’t the famous artist that he became later on. But people have always compared us,” he confides, “when people said I was like my dad I used to say no, but now I say, ok. Why not? It is ok to be like my dad.” Emmanuel founded the Emmagoss Gallery in Beirut in 1991 and like the Anima Gallery, which sees education as an important part of its mission, Emmagoss also teaches art and offers studio space to young and fresh talent. And as Emmanuel continues to manage and exhibit the work of his late father Paul, his own eldest son Paul is now a budding artistic talent himself, set to carry on the Guiragossian legacy down to the next generation. There are many reasons why it has taken so long for the Guiragossians to exhibit their work together like this, now two decades after their father’s death and two decades further on in their own successful solo careers, but the three siblings have decided that now is the time for them. “Ghada, the owner of Anima Gallery, came to the art fair and retrospective that we had done for my father at the time and she said she was opening a new gallery here in Qatar,” Jean-Paul says, “she said it was about time for us to do a solo show all together, and she was right.” “Actually we thought it wouldn’t work because everyone has their own style but it has,” Emmanuel adds, “it is important for us to see this exhibition ourselves before the public, and there is a nice satisfaction in seeing it all together. “The most important thing for us is being together and doing this exhibition, an exhibition is not done for one country, it’s done for the whole world, especially with the internet, and everyone can access it online. Manuella speaks about the growing awareness and appreciation
of art in the Arab world and the opportunities now available in Qatar for artists and art lovers. “This is a country that is young in its artistic education, so where better than a place like Qatar to start the process of education. A lot of collectors come from Qatar to our gallery, or visit art fairs to see our work, so why not bring it to them? “If a place like Qatar or any other place in the Arab world wants to start supporting artists then we are there to support them,” Manuella adds, “it’s a two-way relationship, it’s not just about going to a place where people can buy something.” Manuella, Jean-Paul and Emmanuel all hope that this exhibition will inspire people to appreciate art and be creative themselves. “If I were to go and see an exhibition of an artist I liked I would want to come out fully loaded with inspiration,” Manuella tells us, “then that is how I would want people to feel when they come and see our work.”

t is in the blood,” says the 47-year-old mother of three, Anne Pascale, as she explains the background to starting her furniture and interior design company in 2003. “My parents were both in business, and I followed their footsteps, I went into the interior design and furniture business and did that for 22 years. “But I always wanted to start my own company. I was always very interested in technical and innovative products and one day I discovered an acrylic material and I decided to create a new concept by mixing wood and this technical material, which had never been used before in this way. “It may look easy when you see the results but believe me you have to make many prototypes. It took me 18 months to get the material right, work out the techniques and make the moulds.” The result is stunning, as the acrylic material can be inlayed with any number of products such as gold flecks, shells, flowers and fabrics, and then moulded to make all kinds of things from stair panels to chairs, vases, tables, lamp shades and practically anything in the decorative line. Anne Pascale was joined in the business early on by her husband Jacques who, also with 22 years of experience working in the manufacturing of interior design products and finishings for luxury companies, brought a wealth of business know-how to Lisaura. Jacques tells us, “She was in creation and I was in construction, so we complimented each other. We began by selling in trade fairs in France, Germany and Dubai. But with most of our clients being located in the Middle East, it seemed the logical step to move here.” So in 2010 the couple moved to Bahrain then relocated to Doha a year later. Since then Lisaura has expanded and is now a one-stop shop for interior design, working with other companies to source products for their client’s needs, and also working closely with the French architect Edward François. “Edward’s focus is in sustainable buildings, so as soon as we meet with a client who wants to build sustainably we connect the two and work together,” Anne Pascale says, “this is something we also feel strongly about — the acrylic we use is entirely recyclable, you can melt it down and remould it into something else.” Anne Pascale draws inspiration from “completely everywhere” and has even reinvented items from mechanical parts on cars to radiator grills into plant pots, lampshades and other stylish end products made by Lisaura.
With ten years behind them now, and orders coming in from many of the top hotels in Doha and from VIP clients around the Gulf, Lisaura is on the verge of making it big. But the couple are modest about their achievements and it is clear that neither one is in it for fame or glory, but for the enjoyment of working on something great, something unique and of course, of working together. “We should always be modest, because I think it’s the best way to be able to approach very different people, and absolutely my parents educated me to be this way,” says Anne, “where will being arrogant get you? You have to always be modest and friendly to be approachable and respectful of others to be able to do business. But also we are passionate about what we are doing and we love to be creative, and when we get it right, it makes us happy to see our customers are happy! “We have chosen Qatar for the vision of its leaders and their amazing bet on the future. The projects here are very ambitious, and we want to actively participate in this exciting development. This is our hub for the entire Gulf.”

Kimbra — Somebody We Should All Get To Know Paden R Vaughan spent time at the Rhythm & Vines Festival in New Zealand and met up with one of its main stage act stars, Kimbra, an artist destined for big things in 2013.
A
s I entered the Waiohika Estate house, all the glitz and glamour of the magnificent mansion seemed a far cry from the exciting and almost chaotic atmosphere of the Rhythm & Vines Festival, taking place just metres away. I was there to interview singer/songwriter 22-year-old Kimbra, a native New Zealander with a larger-than-life on stage persona but a much more modest and down-to-earth personality off stage. Born Kimbra Lee Johnson, she grew up in Hamilton, the daughter of a head doctor and an orthopaedic nurse. At a very early age she began writing songs, and when she was 12 her father bought her a guitar, and so she found her direction in life. “I didn't dream of having my name in lights; music made me feel very elated and I wanted to be able to use that to make others feel the same. I knew it would always be part of my life very early on. It was never something I decided to do; I just felt drawn to it. “I had plans of going to university, but it just didn't feel natural; I knew in my heart that music was the path for me, and I feel it has always existed for me, deep in my subconscious.” And her talent seemed to match her determination; she won the well-established New Zealand competition Rockquest at just 14 years old. After that, it was clear that this young Kiwi was one to watch. Early public performances included singing at the Waikato Times Gold Cup race meeting and singing the New Zealand national anthem in front of 27,000 people at the 2002 NPC rugby union final. In 2007 she won the Juice TV Award for Best Breakthrough music video for her single ‘Simply On My Lips’ and it was at this point that she came to the attention of ex-Independiente Records boss Mark Richardson (of Jamiroquai and Paula Abdul fame) and his newly formed management company. “When Mark called and offered me the opportunity to record an album, I knew instantly that it was meant to be! Soon after I signed and relocated to Australia.” Having released her debut album 'Vows' internationally earlier last year, with influences from Stevie Wonder all the way through to Guided By Voices, Kimbra’s musical style has been

classified as jazz-inspired electropop, fused with catchy melodies and an often unpredictable quality that has won her critical acclaim. To many, her unforgettable appearance in the global chart success ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ by Gotye, brought the young star justified global recognition. “Playing Coachella festival in the US was a truly unforgettable experience; to have gained such a wide reach across the globe is something I am eternally grateful for. But for me it's always and will always be more special playing at home in New Zealand. “I've been lucky to have worked with some fantastic artists and incredible people and although many people like to focus on the negatives of the industry, there's so much that's positive about it. I believe this overrules any negativity.” So what lies ahead for this determined young performer? “I'm into the second album now; which is a fresh slate for a new year. I've not stopped writing for a second. Like I said: music will always be a part of me! And there's no better place to do what I love than in my home country.” 34

And after seeing her main stage performance at December’s Rhythm & Vines festival, it's safe to say that for Kimbra, music is her destiny. But as her star rises and the commercial aspects of the music industry begin to influence her career, is she comfortable merging her creativity with the obvious demands of what is ultimately a business? “It’s a little scary when you suddenly begin to see your music interpreted on a completely different scale, but I believe the key is to remain true to the ideals that brought me here and to never allow the commercial interests to compromise my craft.” Daring, eccentric and certainly not your traditional pop star — she is nevertheless exactly the kind of personality the industry needs, and 2013 should see this huge talent globally recognised. Artistic and design director of the pioneering watch brand JaegerLeCoultre, Janek Deleskiewicz is a gifted creative and aficionado of the Arts, as Kirsty Edwards-Harris found out during their inspirational chat.
W
orking in the Design Department of JaegerLeCoultre for 23 years, Janek Deleskiewicz is the author behind many a masterpiece of horology and elegance. Of Polish origin, Janek grew up immersed in the French culture, where travel and the Arts became second nature to him. His style is imbued with the influence of his many experiences, which Janek believes is integral to the growth of all, as it enables them to become a more rounded person, fueling the imagination, and so their creativity.
Has creativity always been an intrinsic part of who you are? Janek Deleskiewicz. Ever since I was born, I’ve always been creative in different ways, such as drawing, music and painting. As a child I discovered different ways of practicing creativity and it became a game. I took imagination and representation and linked them with the moment. I was very influenced by the 50s, 60s and 70s, it was normal for me to imagine what could be next and have the representation of the world in mind. As a child, were you immersed in the creative world? JD. My mother was French and a director of a private school, my father was Polish and in business. Both were integral to my upbringing and creative nature. My father went to England during the war, and then joined the army to fight in Norway; afterwards he went to the North of Scotland then came to France. The interesting stories of his travels, and his ability to speak many languages, helped to develop my imagination and fuel my interest for travel.

FASHION How has your culture influenced your designs? JD. My family culture, Europe all along my life, the difference between countries, travelling to China, the United States, the perceptions of culture are totally different to each other. It’s lovely to meet people and get to know them and where they come from.
Of all your creations, which is your personal favourite? JD. All the watches and different expressions we develop, as well as those coming from past, I like for different reasons. New innovations in recent and contemporary watches are very important for me. What advice would you give to people when buying a watch? JD. It depends on the personality, certain characters know what they want and don’t want. For a woman I may propose the RendezVous watch, and perfect craftsmen work on it — one of the best new developments there is. Many women prefer to find their own watches on their travels. Like reading a book, it’s important to know what you are buying. It’s necessary to learn and educate yourself, so you can understand what you wearing on your wrist.
As an artist yourself, who do you most admire and why? JD. There are many artists in my mind, from Van Gogh, Picasso and Salvador Dali to Andy Warhol, but I also admire the actors and directors of movies. In this career, it’s necessary to know many things in order to develop, such as dancing, music, theatre, movies, painting, sculpture and Art nouveau. I discuss with young designers if they play instruments outside of work, or are a painter etc. as it’s necessary to live with an active education beyond school and work. From where do you draw your inspiration? JD. Travel, life experiences; I went to Mauritius at Christmas for example, which was very important for me to share, to embrace the culture. It’s nice to have change in life; it helps to understand what can be the next innovation, the next watch. 48

What formal design background do you have? JD. I’m unusual in this industry in that I have a technical background as many designers go to artistic schools. It’s an advantage for me, as it’s very important to have knowledge of the technical aspects of the business. It means that I can easily discuss in the factory with the engineers. After my technical baccalaureate I went to an art college. After hours I went to a private school for further education in drawings, painting, sculpture etc, and discussed with friends and played music with them. I had a very eclectic education, many years of different influences and artistic avenues; it’s great for developing the imagination.

My mother practiced music and educated my brother and sister and I in the Arts. We got to experience theatre, concerts, opera and exhibitions from a young age. I believe it’s very important, necessary even, to learn things outside of school such as these. All the different things we do socially also have effects on the watch industry.

Is there a particular watch that would be the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day? JD. We work on collections every year for Valentine’s Day and also propose personalised engravings. It’s a nice moment to show sentiment to each other and a watch is a natural gift to offer to your loved one on Valentine’s Day. We also have a new Reverse with a Valextra strap. Which Jaeger-LeCoultre watches would you advise women to invest in this coming Spring Summer? JD. Depends on what you’re wearing, the seasonal trends, what activities you are doing. Perhaps in the summer, you’d prefer to have white strap or in a lighter colour to adapt to your clothes. It’s useful when you go on holiday to wear sportive watches, as they can be used in all conditions.

It’s necessary to learn and educate yourself, so you can understand what you wearing on your wrist.” What has been the biggest challenge in your career and how did you overcome it? JD. The biggest challenge is to imagine the next collection because we are working two years in advance of the current one, and now we must think for 2015. It’s not easy to imagine the choices of men and women everywhere in the world two years into the future. But it’s so exciting to discuss options with the team, in different ways, what’s the next challenge. We start with nothing, only the white paper and imagine the future. We don’t know the trends in two year’s time; we need to imagine what these can be. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? JD. Always be satisfied with what you do, if you are not enthusiastic about what you can do, it can be a great enemy of the future. I must be very careful when finishing the development of a new product, as I want to know exactly what can be better for next time.
What are your creative aspirations for the future? JD. To speak with kids and the new generation because I started with Jaeger-LeCoultre 20 years ago, and am now working with my team of young designers and some of them are in their 20s — some weren’t even born when I started to work with the brand. It’s very important to speak with the next generation as they will be different, and they are the future. What do you enjoy doing in your own time? JD. What I love to do is to play music with friends. Because it’s not my job, I’m free to play with them and enjoy the moment.
What more do you want from life? JD. I’m not a collector and I don’t want to have more and more of everything. I’m happy with what I have; my career, family life, friends, and all the people I have around me and in my social life. It’s essential to wake up every morning and have a good program and with that I can be happy. I hope this life will continue and I’m very happy to spend all these years in this design job it’s one of the best lives I could dream of, like what I used to dream of when I was a kid.

A Thing of Beauty… …is indeed a joy forever. To say that Bassam Fattouh is passionate about beauty and makeup is an understatement; they are, in fact, his life. From his dream start in Beirut over a decade ago, his now bursting portfolio of celebrity clients is proof enough that a steely determination to follow one’s aspirations eventually pays off. With his very own cosmetics line, he talks exclusively to Ohlala! about what it takes to make it big in the beauty industry, his inspiration and his vision for the future.

assam has been fond of makeup and beauty ever since he was little. When he was about six years old, Bassam remembers sketching makeup on models’ faces in magazines, and applying makeup on his mum’s face. It was a long time after that however, during the end of his high school life, when he realised that being involved in the arts, through makeup, was his ultimate passion. 58

What particular memory are you fond of from when you were starting out? Bassam Fattouh. The arts captivated me in all possible ways, so upon receiving my diploma in Paris, I moved back to Lebanon and turned my dreams into reality by opening my institute in Beirut in the summer of 1997. This was the critical turning point in my career, especially as I was the first makeup artist in the Middle East to advertise work on billboards. Considering the traditional mentality that women are more likely to be in this line of business than men, did anyone around you object to your career choice? BF. No one objected but then neither did anyone encourage me. When I finally decided to go into the makeup industry, everything went smoothly.
You’ve worked with so many celebrities in the Middle East. Who’s your favourite face? BF. There’s no privilege in this industry. My work comes straight from my heart. I’ve worked on the world’s most glamourous faces but every woman that sits on my chair is the most beautiful woman, it’s her moment! I have no favourite face. However, Haifa Wehbe inspired me all along my career and I’ve gained most of my expertise while applying makeup on her beautiful features — she’s my muse.
Your makeup line offers quite a range products. What pushed you to develop your own? BF. I was fascinated by the world of arts: colours, shapes, feelings. Based on years and years of experience, I used my inspiration to develop everything I love about makeup in one line, a line that combines luxury with practical functionality and innovation. What inspires you to create a product? BF. Everything! Fashion inspires me, styles, fabrics, product names, nature, and shoes! It’s all about fantasy.
What would you say was the defining moment in your career? BF. Every step has been a defining moment to evaluate and to improve. I have always been confident about my talent and my choices. The use of daring colours in an artistic way was very critical to me.
What’s your advice to anyone wishing to pursue a career or business in this particular field? BF. Believe in your talent; follow your feelings, intuition and heart. Don’t imitate, but create. We are here to make a difference.
What makeup trend should people look out for this coming Spring Summer? BF. One of the biggest trends to watch out for in the Spring Summer season is all about a sheer look and flawless transparent skin. To achieve this, you can use bold colour lipsticks to make the skin stand out and give you that ‘natural look’. For the base foundation, pick one that gives a sheer and luminous coverage to even out the complexion. Lastly, apply a translucent and light powder for more radiance. So what’s next for Bassam Fattouh? BF. I’ll be developing the brand further and I’m planning on going global.

he 2013 model Lexus GS 350 is a wonderful mid-size luxury sports sedan. It is slightly wider and taller than the predecessor, with a modern and more assertive looking exterior design. Accompanying the exterior makeover the cabin is also revised, reflecting the best Lexus traditions with its handsome and finely crafted interior marked by soft leather with subtly pronounced stitching details, and rich wood and aluminium trim. The atmosphere is luxurious, quiet and comfortable. The seats are firm while at the same time cosseting, coming with the optional 18-way electronic adjustments for tailored comfort. The cockpit is ergonomically laid out with clearly separated display and operation zones. The multimedia system comes with a wide 12.3 inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display with a navigation system, parking assist camera and it also acts as a home theatre system. The infotainment system is very effortlessly controlled with Remote Touch, a mouse-like joystick located on the centre console. The menus are easy to navigate and the cursor “snaps” into place when you get near your choice on the screen. The sound-system is excellent, and can also be controlled from the rear seats. There’s a three-zone climate control system available with an optional and very innovative “nanoe” technology, which releases microscopic negatively charged “nanoe” particles in the cabin. Not only do these particles help purify the cabin air and deodorise the seats and upholstery, but — wait for this — best of all they display a healthy moisturising effect on your skin and hair. Now that’s sure to be a hit with all the lady drivers, beauty treatments from your car while you’re cruising around! The GS 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine delivering 312-horsepower. It moves very swiftly, accelerating from zero to 100-kilometres per hour in a very nice 6.3-seconds. The engine feels powerful and there are plenty of power reserves to accelerate, even at faster speeds. The handling is superbly smooth; the steering is very responsive and it is a real pleasure to drive. There are three different driving modes to choose from, Eco, Sport S and Sport S+. You can choose to drive on the automatic mode, or on the manual mode with the paddle shifts if you are in dynamic sport mood. Among many others the standard safety systems include traction and stability controls, ABS and brake assist systems, multitude of airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors. Security system and engine immobiliser (which is a theft deterrent system) are also standard features. If you are looking for a car that is fun but family friendly at the same time, the GS 350 is a good choice. The rear is spacious enough to accommodate children — and adults too — very comfortably,
and the rear and side window blinds create a relaxed atmosphere at the back. The boot accommodates pushchairs and family grocery shopping very well. It is great family car and at the same time due to the fine performance and lovely driving characteristics, it is also a fantastic car to have fun with. Well done Lexus!

liss, wonder and awe — how else can you describe eating food that has been cooked so precisely, with ingredients combined so expertly, and presented so elegantly? Enter the world of Alain Ducasse, possibly the world’s most decorated chef with 21 Michelin stars to his name for restaurants dotted around the globe; if you haven’t heard of him before, you will surely hear of him a lot, lot more since the opening of his brand new venture, IDAM at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. Chef Romain Meder, who has worked with Ducasse for several years, took on the role of IDAM’s executive chef 18 months ago to start working on the menu, and says, “Alain told me about the project here in Qatar and it was really interesting to be able to open a new restaurant like this.” The Philippe Starck designed restaurant sits at the top of the museum, with stunning, unbroken views across the Corniche. Once inside guests are ushered to perfectly laid tables, by highly trained and attentive staff, to enjoy a selection of French Mediterranean cuisine infused with Arabian flavours. “I like the philosophy of Alain Ducasse,” says Chef Romain, “our basic kitchen is Mediterranean French but in each of his restaurants Alain tried to work with local history and cuisine, and use locally grown produce as well. “For example, I worked on the basic recipe for the Lebanese ‘Sayadieh’, which is a traditional rice and seafood dish with cinnamon and cumin. We worked on the dish using the French technique and from there we arrived at the end result, which is a bit like the traditional dish and a bit like risotto but it is light and modern.” In his quest to find the best ingredients and infuse local traditions into his menu Romain travelled to the Lebanon, India, Morocco and New York. “I went to India to learn how to cook spices because as a French person we don’t use spices properly, or know how to mix them to get the best flavours,” Romain tells us, “so it took us 18 months from the start of my research to tasting, travelling and looking for the best products in Doha, which is not an easy task.” Also, as a dry restaurant, the team at IDAM have put a lot of effort into creating drinks to complement each course and dish. The pièce de resistance of the six-course A la Carte menu on offer at IDAM, is for Chef Romain, “the Camel Shank, seared duck foie gras, souffleed potatoes with truffle sauce. Romain says: “It was difficult because if you use the French technique it is too tough, so we tried to get it right by cooking it slowly, so that the meat is very tender but it is still red inside.” Romain’s technique, the product of a great deal of thinking, planning and waiting, is to cook the camel “very slowly over several days.” The end result is melt-in-your-mouth wateringly good, and meat eaters who have the chance to try it should not pass up the opportunity lightly. If you have a taste for all things sweet and sugary, as well as prefer your cakes freshly baked and preservative-free, then Magnolia Bakery is the perfect place to stop for a coffee and a cake when you are out and about in Doha. The newly opened store, in Abu Hamour Mall, is the seventh store in this traditional chain of cakes and sweet treats, which was founded in New York in 1996 by Bobbie Lloyd. As well as getting your cakes made to order, the bakery has a few specialities such as its famous banana pudding, ice box deserts (in six flavours) and mini-cheesecakes (in eight flavours) to name but a few. Speaking at the opening of the store Bobbie said, “Magnolia Bakery is an old fashioned Bakery. Back in the old days there were bakeries like Magnolia in small towns making traditional sweets and desserts, so we make some of those cakes that people don’t make any more. We also bake in small batches, we bake the way you would do at home.” And for those wanting to treat their loved one on Valentine’s Day the bakery is also offering a range of heart shaped cakes and cookies for lovers to enjoy!
Traditional French restaurant La Varenne, just opened in West Bay’s Tornado Tower, is opening for dinner especially for Valentine’s Day guests on February 14. Currently open daily for Breakfast and Lunch, the special Valentine’s Dinner menu for two at La Varenne includes a starter of Ballotine de Volaille, followed by Tournedos Rossini with Caramel chocolate and Praline Cake for dessert, with a red rose for every lady in the restaurant. Heading up the kitchen is executive chef Stuart Collins, who trained under Gordon Ramsay and Michael Caines, and who has worked in a number of Michelin-starred restaurants in both the UK and USA. The rest of the kitchen team consists of talented chefs from France and around the world.

resh from their recent show in Cairo, the WWE Raw team of wrestlers are coming to flex some muscle and show off their talents — with plenty of energy, crazy moves and drama to boot. Stars of the show include John Cena, CM Punk, Ryback, Kane, Daniel Bryan, Rey Mysterio, Dolph Ziggler, R-Truth, Zack Ryder and many more. Here is a closer look at some of the biggest names coming to Doha this month.
John Cena
JOHN CENA
Fans love him or hate him. There’s no middle ground, and that’s the power of John Cena. Whatever you think of The Champ, there’s no denying his actions impact everything and everyone around him. Sure, he has his detractors, and they’re vocal, but Cena is still easily the most admired competitor in WWE, as evidenced by his nine million-plus Facebook followers. Cenation is strong. And its message is spreading. Whether competing in the squared circle, performing in front of the camera, or donating time to charitable organisations like Make-A-Wish, the “Champ” is there. A product of West Newbury, Massachusetts, Cena discovered sports and weightlifting in his teens. He attended Springfield College, where he earned a degree in exercise physiology and excelled as a Division III All-American offensive lineman. Although he grew up a huge fan of such Superstars as Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior, Cena only seriously considered becoming one himself while working the counter at Gold’s Gym in Venice, Califfornia. There, a wrestler-intraining encouraged him to enroll in class to learn the ropes. From day one, he was hooked.
KANE
CM Punk
A year later, Cena was signed by WWE to a developmental contract. What did he have that others didn’t? A physique that looked as though it were formed from Portland cement, mic skills that would shame a Roman senator, the tireless perseverance of Superman, and a devastating move that could turn even the most cast-iron grapplers into bags of mulch.
Kane
If it seems improbable for hellfire and brimstone to be so utterly chilling, you haven’t met Kane. At 7-feet tall and weighing in at more than 300 pounds, The Devil’s Favourite Demon is a monstrous abomination that seems to have been extracted directly from your childhood nightmares. The Big Red Monster has tormented WWE since his debut at Badd Blood in October 1997, when he tore off the cage door and unleashed hell during the first-ever Hell in a Cell Match between Shawn Michaels and his half-brother The Undertaker. Kane is consumed by an infernal desire to set ablaze the lives of his fellow Superstars, leaving a scorched path of destruction behind his fiery footsteps. Some of The Big Red Monster’s more demented acts have included setting a WWE Hall of Famer on fire, hitting a WWE executive with a Tombstone, kidnapping too many Superstars to mention and forcing a WWE Diva to marry him. No one is safe from his twisted desires and demonic impulses. Least of all, it would seem, Kane himself. For years, the sadistic Superstar wore a ghoulish face mask designed to conceal hideous burns from a fire supposedly started by Undertaker years before. But WWE fans received a shock on one of the most infamous nights of Kane’s career when, after losing a Mask vs. Championship Match on Raw, the tortured soul was forced to unmask and reveal his face to the world.
CM Punk
It’s not surprising that CM Punk cites the radical “Rowdy” Roddy Piper as a childhood influence. After all, Punk is the embodiment of the antiestablishment, whose skill at igniting verbal “pipe bombs” is rivaled only by “Hot Rod” himself. Punk even looks the part of rebel with his too-numerous-to-count tattoos and body piercings. Yet, he waxes way more philosophical than his exterior might suggest, and has shown a diverse set of interests that include ghost hunting, G.I. Joe and the “Straight Edge” movement, a subculture that rejects the use of drugs, alcohol and a dependency lifestyle. His in-ring repertoire is an assimilation of fighting styles, all of which were put on full display during his debut in The Land of the Extreme
RYBACK in 2006. Since then, Punk has added many accomplishments to his considerable résumé, including the ECW, WWE, World Heavyweight, World Tag Team and Intercontinental Championships. Today, Punk is headlining pay-per-views — and he’s doing so in spite of the events of 2011, when he assailed Mr. McMahon with his blunt opinions about the business and made a bold promise not to renew his contract with the company. Punk’s criticism struck a nerve with The Chairman who, against his better judgment, granted The Second City Saint a WWE Championship Match at WWE Money in the Bank in the Superstar’s native city, Chicago. Punk not only beat John Cena to win that match, but he also absconded with the WWE Championship as the seconds on his WWE contract ticked down. Fortunately for WWE fans everywhere, Punk agreed to re-sign with WWE weeks later, compelled to return to the ring to prove that he’s the undisputed “Best in the World.” The Voice of the Voiceless advocated on behalf of disenchanted WWE fans who felt the WWE product was in need of a good (roundhouse) kick in the teeth. He became two-time WWE Champion, proving his mettle by defeating the likes of Chris Jericho, Alberto Del Rio, Daniel Bryan and other elite Superstars.
Ryback
If the measure of a man is what he does with power, then measuring the capabilities of a Superstar as commanding as Ryback may prove difficult. Crushing his opponents with palpable intensity, the 6-foot-3, 291-pound monster has the strength and focus of an android that was designed to annihilate. Ryback approaches every challenge with brute force and a no-nonsense demeanour that exudes supreme confidence in his own abilities. He doesn’t just possess the skills to destroy a rival at any time — he carries himself as if that result is never in doubt. One only needs to observe how Ryback’s fellow Superstars study him to understand his ruthless reputation. They stare in awe as ifthey’re watching disaster footage, looking on in shock as Ryback’s ferocity both impresses them and leaves them fearful of being his next target. How can anyone measure such an intimidating beast in comparison to the rest of his WWE competition? Few words may deem suitable as he starts to make his mark in the ring by leaving a long line of battered opponents in his wake. Beethoven at his best Throughout February WHY GO? February is a busy month for the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, with no fewer than four events taking place in Doha. The second and third concerts in the three part choral festival take place on February 3 and 8, with the concert on February 8 also marking the start of a five concert series of Beethoven Symphonies. His ninth and last symphony marks the first in the series, and is often considered his most profound. The composer added vocal soloists and a chorus to a symphony for the first time and conducted the first performance himself, even though by that time he could hear nothing, not even the rapturous applause that brought him back to the stage five times. The final movement, composed to August Schiller’s Ode to Joy, is a hymn to universal brotherhood. James Gaffigan, considered by many to be the most outstanding young American conductor of his generation, will conduct the Beethoven cycle. Other concerts the Beethoven cycle in February include the Eroica (Third), Fifth, Pastorale (Sixth) and Seventh Symphonies, all masterworks.

Museum’s Adult Education Program Ongoing WHY GO? The series of adult workshops organised by the Museum continues with the Silk Road, a four part workshop taking place on Mondays in February (4, 11, 18, and 25). Participants will be led on a tour through the museum's galleries and look at the wideranging examples of Islamic designs to use as inspiration for the production of a silkpainting (spuppin@qma.org.qa). Eye of the Beholder, taking place for five Wednesdays from February 13, enables participants to develop their drawing skills while getting inspired by some of the most valuable objects of Islamic Art (spuppin@qma.org.qa). The Museum also offers classes in calligraphy, both the Diwani and the Ruq’ah script (eelensari@qma.org.qa). Diwani script was invented and developed during the reign of the Ottoman sultans. All state decrees and royal missives at the Ottoman court in Istanbul were written in Diwani, which is characterised by its decorative, curving style. Ruq'ah script is the last calligraphy invented at the Ottoman court, reaching its height in the nineteenth century. The simple, clear style of Ruq'ah script makes it ideal for students starting their exploration of Arabic calligraphy.

Qatar Tournament Attracts Top Players February 11 to 17 WHY GO? Now in its thirteenth year, the Qatar Total Open attracts an incredibly strong field of participants in the women’s game. It was the first professional women’s tennis tournament staged in the Middle East and today it is a WTA Premier 5 event, bringing with it the greatest names in the sport. All top 10 players will be coming to the Qatari capital next month to participate in the 56-player draw. 43 players are directly entered into the field, with eight qualifiers and five wildcards. The top eight seeds will be given a first round bye. Last year’s champion and World No. 1, Victoria Azarenka, leads the field of star athletes. 2005 champion, Maria Sharapova, returns to Doha after last making a finals appearance in 2008; Grand Slam and Olympics champions, Venus and Serena Williams; 2011 Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova; and 2012 finalist Sam Stosur are among the who’s who of incredible talent.

International Sailing Regatta February 19 to 23 WHY GO? Even if you do not sail, the Qatar International Sailing Regatta will be a great spectacle with more than twelve races featuring several classes of boats including Optimists, Hobbie Cats and three different classes of Laser. Taking place from the hub at the Doha Sailing Club, the boats will race in Doha bay, a half hour sail from the launch site, but will be visible from most of the Corniche. This year entries are expected from 25 countries, including GCC entrants Bahrain, UAE and Qatar. At Last year’s event, Qatari sailors Mohammed Al Mohannadi and Jassim Al Sulaiti won the 470 title, while Bahraini brothers Ebrahim and Ahmed Abdullah were second and Kuwait’s Saud Al Masoud and Salim Qali finished third. The Championship is organised by Qatar Sailing & Rowing Federation in cooperation with Doha Sailing Club. Interested spectators can charter a boat to get closer to the action. The five day Qatar Motor Show, launched at the end of Janaury under the theme ‘Stand Out from the Crowd’ was expected to draw thousands of visitors to Doha Exhibition Centre to see the latest models of cars from around the globe. reetings from Koh Samui, a cute little island in Thailand. Drenched in palm trees, beaches and wellness, over flowing with spas, detox retreats and replenishing souls, all of whom have made the choice to ‘vacay’ with the added bonus of physically and mentally boosting their bods. I decided to make January my month of clarity, four weeks of unadulterated relax, replenish and cleanse in preparation for this glorious year ahead. Now, the simpler term to all that's going on at the moment would be known as a ‘detox’, as is associated with drug addicts, alcoholics and some kind of rehabilitation set up. Wrong. A detox is to simply and essentially rid your body of toxins. Here's some bad news: most of us are filled with them, much thanks to processed foods, stressful lifestyles, smoking, not enough sleep, and just the general day to day drama we tend to put ourselves through. Here's some good news: there are multiple solutions available to ensure you "maintain the temple" ...such as the one I chose: partaking in a regimented program of basic starvation, which lasts about a week. It's painful, and tiresome (yet oddly idyllic), with wondrous — and immediat — benefits. Allow me to break things down: The food: Well, there is none. You're put on a diet of specially concocted juices and broths. Depending on how long your program is, this can continue for up to two weeks. It's supposed to get your body into "cleanse overdrive", eradicating the toxins and purifying internal organs. The exercise: Much like a boot camp, your day begins at 6am with a 90-minute hike, followed by 90 minutes of yoga, and then (!) 60 minutes of hardcore cardio. Doing all this is of course a mild hell, particularly for someone who despises the gym. Doing all this with no food in your system — whatsoever — is a new level of torture. The colonics: Google the definition if you're unsure. Then add to your discovery, "selfadministered". Indeed, not pretty. The highlight: A liver flush. This consists of drinking orange juice, ginger, garlic and OLIVE OIL, followed by Epsom salt water, and an overnight date with the toilet. The lessons: Multiple workshops on nutrition, preventative tips on maintaining, rather than treating, and [quite scary] reality checks on just how awful processed food really is. The perks:

Thai massages — daily. The results: Where do I begin... Lighter, healthier, stronger, more energetic, and completely revitalised... My hair's grown, so have my nails (very quickly), the whites of my eyes are more white, dark circles gone and skin cleared — with an added glow. Thanks to no edible anything for almost two weeks, it's now near impossible for me to eat heavier, fattier foods, even if I wanted to. Exercising has, shockingly, become enjoyable. Let us hope (and pray, and pray some more) that things remain this way. So... there you have it. And I cannot say it enough. You owe this to your body. So much so that I'm actually setting up a program for a number of us ladies to undergo in 2014. A "bougi detox" if you will. It's really not as gruesome as it sounds. Especially once I curate a little bit of lux into the mix. AND... since holidays are supposed to revive (not exhaust), this is, definitively, the way to break. In other Thai-related news, Koh Samui's spa count is heavenly. I actually think there's more of my self-spoil havens here than there are homes. The beaches aren't wonderful. Little dirty to be honest. In fact most of the island's a little dirty. There seems to be a problem with litter — and collecting it. Don't like this. The markets are quite thrilling, hustled and bustled with all sorts of Thai artefacts. Massages on most public beaches are available for approximately four US dollars (cheap insanity). Tourists from Russia are all over the place. And Israel. The airport looks like a pretty conservatory. Shopping is wonderful for natural beauty products, with coconut oil, papaya soap and ginseng being my personal faves. An inspiring excursion with monks left me tearfully touched. The level of peace in each of these humbly powerful human beings was almost overwhelming. Made a donation toward their building of a temple. Then, I signed a brick. Thank you Thailand. All set.
